The Car is the seventh studio album by English rock band Arctic Monkeys, released on 21 October 2022 by Domino Recording Company. It was written by band frontman Alex Turner in his Los Angeles home. It was produced in Suffolk, Paris and London by frequent Arctic Monkeys collaborator James Ford, alongside frequent guest musicians Tom Rowley, Loren Humphrey and Tyler Parkford. It was arranged by Bridget Samuels and Turner. Drummer Matt Helders took the picture on the album cover, which depicts a white car in an empty car park. Its title refers to said cover and the abundance of references to vehicles in the lyrics.
The Car builds upon the sound from the band's previous album, Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino (2018). It features a wide array of genres that include orchestral rock, lounge pop, baroque pop, and funk, as well as elements of jazz. It also draws influence from soul music, electronic music, glam rock, bossa nova, traditional pop and vintage film soundtracks.
The album has been promoted by the singles, "There'd Better Be a Mirrorball", "Body Paint" and "I Ain't Quite Where I Think I Am".
In the United Kingdom, The Car and Taylor Swift's Midnights are competing for the number one spot on the UK Albums Chart. As of the first three days of the tracking week, the albums have sold 105,000 and 140,000 units respectively.

“Sculptures of anything goes” is my top for this album. Feels like a mature “knee socks” if that connects with anyone else.

I absolutely love body paint, I think its genuinely one of their best songs ever. It grows on me more and more every time i hear it. Other songs that stand out are sculptures, hello you, and of course mirrorball.

Same here. I heard Tranquility all the way through and I didn’t care for it. It finally clicked for me a few months ago and it’s my 2nd favorite in the discography. That adjustment was perfect for this album. It gets better after each listen too.
I’m exactly the same, I loved Tranquility Base, and I really love The Car- not because it’s the same but because it’s equally different. Amazing.
Big fan of TBHC, a true masterpiece. So, the first time i listened to The Car i did not know what to think of it but now, it's slowly grow on me. But i wont say it's better. The last LPs are so unique.

Big Ideas is such a brilliant song. The subject matter, the tinge of sadness in Alex's voice, and the David Bowie-esque influence sonically and in the music arrangement.

Tranquility Base is one of the biggest growers of all time. What sounded like uninteresting elevator music to me at first, over time literally rewires the neuron connections in your brain until you get familiar with the out-of-the-norm song structures, and it becomes so so good. Literally took almost 2 years for the whole album to hit, but the pandemic truly transformed the context of the entire project for me. There is a reason people get it tattood, it absolutely resonates very hard once it sticks.

Totally agree, cringed when i first heard tbhc but the more i listened the more i adapted, and thank god i kept listening. All albums are fantastic for all different moods.
First time I heard base hotel couldn’t even get half way into the album before stopping it out of disgust. I’ve forced myself to listen to it in it’s entirety but man it’s still a tough listen I don’t think I’ll ever get into it.
You put what I felt into words much better than I ever would have
So crazy, went into first moments of disappointment and shock listening to Tranquility and then it moved more and more into one of the best albums ever spot. Tranquility set the pathway for the Car, mirrorball excited me right away and again, all other songs keep creeping in my heart and brain. When i feel like listening to amazing music now, i pick up ‚Car‘… and it even keeps growing. Just to make a point here, i listen and collect music for centuries, i probably listened to zillion albums, Tranquillity and Car made Top 15 and still moving up. Time really shows the quality of songs, AM was amazing but here we got to the next level… leaving me just plain ‚happy‘

Really digging a lot of this new record. I don’t think it reaches some of the highs from Tranquility Base but it’s a more consistent listen imo

A little too consistent maybe
I've been listening Arctic Monkeys since 2006, and I'm so happy that they keep evolving and finding new sounds. They continue to mature and experiment and push their creativity. Alex's recent obsession with cinema and filmmaking is so interesting too. Totally get it's not for everyone, especially for those that jumped on the bandwagon for AM. But this album is absolutely masterful and cinematic. Big love to the boys from Sheffield!

As much as I like Body Paint I kinda hold a grudge for how much tamer the studio version is compared to whenever they've performed it live. Alex's vocals are thicker, longer outro with more elaborate fills from Helders, etc

Big Ideas is definitely the diamond on the album. Alex's voice, the instrumentals, the lyrics - it all sounds so beautiful together, the song left me speechless after the first listen and I've been playing it on repeat ever since. Genuinely a masterpiece and might be one of my fav Monkeys songs ever.

Tranquility Base was an album that I revisited each year since it’s release and found myself loving it more and more until it became my favorite Monkeys album. The more I’ve listened to The Car the more it’s resonated with me, particularly because it feels like a great fall album. It will be a treat to see how this album ages.
I hate when people hate on them because of their change in sound. I think it was their best idea yet! definitely one of my fav albums now
Great thing is with AM if you dislike their latest album you know you may like one of the later ones as they continuously evolve. Wouldn't be surprised if they go in the directino of 'Sculptures' and do more synth heavy moody 80s stuff.

I think it talks about those endings (to say goodbye) that maybe dont feel too organic at first (If that's what it takes, then that's what it takes), but then they end up making perfect sense, as you said, coming to terms with change and it communicates that whole experience. It strikes me, the first time I heard it it made me cry.
Perfect sense is such an amazing song, I’m really disappointed by the lack of recognition for it.

yep. I've been a long time fan, love the early era of the debut + FWN, love the weird era of Humbug, love the sexy era of SIAS + AM, and absolutely love the mature era of TLSP + THBC + this new album. they're just a great band.

A very Bowie, Scott Walker, Leonard Cohen type of record. Really enjoyed the string compositions on this record. Can't wait for your dad to react to Humbug, one of their strongest entries with so good instrumentation.
The Car especially is very Scott Walker. Also getting Destroyer vibes to name a more modern comparison (the synths, the cryptic young singer vibes).

I also thought something else...the song seems to be about their shift in direction and musical evolution. Perhaps he's saying that when kids are listening to their new stuff will their parents who love the old sound ever think about the band. Bit of a stretch with that one but it sort of works.

What makes Alex Turner's writing style so vivid and fascinating is the fact that he's basically using hiphop style of writing in the rock genre, if that makes sense. He has stated multiple times that his main inspirations for writing are the rappers he constantly listens to.
What rappers does he listen to?

That's not entirely true. He stated old school west coast hip hop was an inspiration for AM but they've definitely moved on from that sound and style

I fucking adore this album, still having a little difficulty differentiating the songs, but they're all very good, and I'm really happy with how comfortable with singing Alex has become. Good stuff all around.
These last two albums (the car, tbhc) have been my favorite albums of all time, it brings me to a nostalgic place I’ve never lived, they’re different sides of the same coin, amazing!

The song “Black Plant” from Alex’ second band The Last Shadow Puppets is the ultimate James Bond theme!
Mirrorball is my favourite of the album by far but the whole album gets better with each listen
it hapened the same with me after I listened for the 1st time Perfect Sense, I felt a hollow at the end of the album which is really weird considering that the last song of each album is a banger which makes the conclusion for the album (IMO, I wanna be yours is the excepction to this), but after I read a lyrics of the song on Twitter which really caught my atention I came back to listen the song again. The lyrics are really sad telling of sucess, personal acomplishments and the realization that everything good must come to an end at some point. What a song, what an album... what a band.
So, if you guys liked the orchestration in this album but miss a little bit of punch, definitely it's a great time to revisit TLSP latest album (Everything You've Come To Expect), so underrated.
This seems to be the score of their journey as a band. Their sound changes as they grow, and I appreciate that they really don’t give a shit if fans don’t like it lol. They are putting out what they want to put out and I’m here for it. I personally love this kind of sound in music, and I love their older stuff as well (I’m on a balaclava kick rn).
Yeah the lyrics I don’t always understand, but sometimes I feel like Alex isn’t always trying to make a point. I think he’s finding how words flow together, rather than making meaning? Idk but his lyricism makes me feel smart even though I have no idea wtf he’s talking abt haha
Really respect Arctic Monkeys, they could have just repeated the meteoric success of AM, but they chose to start making different things, the last two albums certainly don't hit you as hard on first listen, but they are very intriguing and rewarding for repeat listenings

This album is so many good. Being a Brazilian fan of Arctic Monkeys, I am so happy with music Mr Schwartz. Have influence of Bossa Nova, a Brazilian Style of music. I liked Body Paint( especially the guitar solo), Sculptures of Anything Goes( is a work of art), Big idea( seems a gorgeous film song) and Hello you ( the riffs are so good). The voice of Alex is soo good, a great voice. Piano and lyrics are good too. And the Orchestra is the cherry of cake... In resume: The álbum is a work of art.

You guys should check out some of the music from The Last Shadow Puppets, which is Alex's other band with Miles Kane. I really love how they use orchestras in their music as well. I can definitely see some influence from their work in this album
I really like this album and it almost kinda bums me out when people don't like it. I feel people are expecting/wanting a new AM or something that is more rock-heavy, and if you're expecting that, this album will be a bit of a tough pill to swallow. But if you go in to it with an open mind and don't expect anything, which it seems nowadays is a good thing to do when the monkeys come out with an album, you'll find some amazing songs and a great experience. Plus, it almost seems a cool-like opinion nowadays to say you 'can't get through an album of the monkeys' or something.
Normally I'm just a spectator and I don't react to videos. But I just have to say that you guys are great. Seeing you two have fun with these albums and spending time together is amazing to see and put's my relationship with my dad in a whole new perspective. The bit at the end where Kevin says it was fun spending spending time with Connor and listening to music together really hit me as a beautiful moment. Keep it up you guys, I really really really enjoy these videos and I'm glad to see that you are too.

My favorite song on the album is Big Ideas, I love the lyrics, the nostalgic message it has, I find the chorus catchy and the piano solo and especially the guitar solo, I loved it, it's too "smooth, elegant and so stylish" that's how I would describe it to the album
I seriously can’t describe how in love I am with this album. I love the fact that Alex writes in such a way that leaves you wanting to dig deeper into the songs just so you can figure out the metaphors and the messages he’s trying to send to the listeners.
“The Car” also does such a good job in establishing a certain mood. It’s nostalgic, reminiscent, and somehow regretful. I genuinely want to know what Alex’s mind looked like durning the writing process.
Definitely a 10/10 album for me.
You have to do Wolf Alice's latest album "Blue Weekend" - they are England's next big band. So diverse in their sound from rock anthems, ballads, acoustic, shoegaze pop, prog rock, punk - they do it all.

great album. i mean i initially got into them for their iconic garage vibes, but they are really killing this new sound. executed perfectly, and i love how we’re seeing that range from alex’s vocals as well. they’re lyrics are growing way more and i’m honestly in love with them because i like the fact that you might not understand it in the first listen. gives you a good reason to keep listening and keep finding the little things which then helps you get a more meaningful connection with the story and the song. love it, love their new aesthetic! i’ll always stick by with their evolution + growth and i fear for the people still stuck in their 2014 era.

This was an absolute hit for me. I stayed up for this release and was not disappointed. I loved TBHC so much though too. Please listen to Humbug. It is one of their most underrated albums in my personal opinion. It is darker and my personal fave.

Humbug is my fave as well, when they released TBH+C it became my new favorite for a while, but now 4 years later Humbug still holds the crown for me

It is as if Alex wrote this album as a soundtrack for the sequel to Submarine that is set 20 years in the future from where the original movie ended.

First time I listened to it I haven't enjoyed it that much, but every time I listened again I liked it more and more, I think this cinematic vibe is really touchy and Alex seems to have grown a lot as a composer. I love this new album and the overall feel of the songs. Lyrics aren't something I ever focus on too much in music, but I can see how people who really try to understand lyrics would find it confusing!

Based on this, I think you will LOVE Alex Turner's second band with Miles Kane called The Last Shadow Puppets. They have two albums out, released 8 years apart. I highly recommend their second one called Everything You've Come to Expect (2016). It has tons of great orchestra and guitar arrangements.

One thing I will say is that I felt Perfect Sense was such a lovely ending to the album because it felt like so much of the album was about self doubt and Perfect Sense was about taking a step back and appreciating the little things and knowing things are okay

I was at an arctic monkeys show yesterday night and I swear it was beautiful, intimate and very well done. Alex voice is very unique, such a cool tone. Now he is an adult (HAHAHA yeap, we are all old now friends) he can do lows and hold on to the notes very beautifully, and he developed more control, even when he does falsettos, was a nice surprise for me. Oh, and they still play guitar haha , the show has a lot of solo guitar moments (but the drummer is the true star, love that man energy HAHAH)
This whole album is a movie score to me

You guys gotta watch their live at kings theatre on their youtube, its only up until Thursday! Hearing the new stuff live really makes it shine, and the way they mix it with their old stuff may help critics make perfect sense (haha) of their sound evolutions

i just cant stop listening to the album really, like a few months ago i was i need for more of this, when i fell in love with TBH&C all over again
and now i have two gems
I think it’s super normal to feel like not as smart after listening to it and not understanding his picture to the full extent, I think that’s why his writing is wonderful, because there’s always details you find on the 5th or 400th listen that you may have not thought about before and see the thought process he must’ve had when building his songs. In this record and the last, Alex Turner uses the most random and out-there metaphors along with the most deep insights on his fears or feelings towards this certain thing and it makes it ever so engaging to be deciphering what he means and especially finding what he took inspiration from to continue to understand what he’s truly trying to say! I love their last two albums because it’s a different spin on them as a band and Alex Turner as a lyricist.
Edit: There’s a line I think encapsulates it so well and it’s “if you’re thinking of me, I’m probably thinking of you” that makes it clear that he’s trying to describe this sense of longing, but it’s hidden between the mention of a costume and body paint metaphors that allows you to understand he’s letting that facade down to allow vulnerability to be shown. (My interpretation thus far)
Really interesting that how you've seen it cause to me I had thought of Body Paint as more of a reflection on a past relationship and not quite being able to move on. The 'body paint' being the ways that the relationship is still lingering on him or the excuses he makes to justify holding on to it "I'm keeping on my costume, and calling it a writing tool" as opposed to 'washing it off' and moving on. I feel like that's part of the fun is how the same metaphors can tell different stories!
It's interesting that he said he felt intellectually lacking when he absolutely nailed the interpretation of Mr. Schwartz. Because according to what Alex himself said in the recent Zane Lowe interview, that was pretty much right on the money.
I hated TBHC because all the deep meanings went over my head. It took a year and like 20 full listens for it to actually click. And that led to watching analysis on the album. It’s one of my favourites now.
I sonically like The Car more on first listen, but still yet to piece all the meanings together, but that’s why I fucking love this band, they really take you on a beautiful journey if you trust them and give them your attention.
I feel like Perfect Sense perfectly loops back to the first song. I don't know if it was intentional, but I've had this on loop and didn't realize the album was done until I was at Body Paint again.
My first time listening to this album was through this video and goddammit, I loved it
Alex Turner and the band just gets better and better every time. I can't wait to see these songs played live! They always manage to be 100x better live, I'm excited

Alex said on a recent interview with Zane Lowe that the main theme he had for the album was a setting of a show setting up before the show starts. If you go through the Car and think about that, songs like Mr Schwartz etc make a bit more sense. I loved it along with tranquility base…
My fave is Big ideas and Mr. Schwartz. It makes me feel so nostalgic. Also I ain't quite where I think I am has such perfect riffs. The whole album is so well executed in every aspect.

The songs on this album just turn into absolute earworms and I'm coming back to listen more and MORE. The album really does grow on you. My faves are probably TBBAM, big ideas, body paint, jet skis on the moat and hello you.
But I really love so many specific bits of each song!! So proud of AM doing what they love ❤️
I liked the album on first listen but I didn't fully get it. Then I watched Alex's interview with Zane Lowe and I have progressively fallen more in love with the album with every listen. Hearing Alex talk about the car as a reflective and nostalgic space really solidified the emotion I felt through the instrumentation and allowed me to dig into the lyrics.
