Arctic Monkeys - AM

open.spotify.com/album/78bpIz...
AM is the fifth studio album by English rock band Arctic Monkeys. It was produced by James Ford and co-produced by Ross Orton at Sage & Sound Recording in Los Angeles and Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree, California, and released in September 2013 through Domino. The album was promoted by the singles "R U Mine?", "Do I Wanna Know?", "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?", "One for the Road", "Arabella", and "Snap Out of It". It features guest appearances by Josh Homme, Bill Ryder-Jones, and Pete Thomas.
Drawing inspiration from a wide range of genres, including psychedelic rock, blues rock, hard rock, heavy metal, desert rock, R&B, and soul, AM notably marks Arctic Monkeys' first venture into hip hop. The band took a different approach to recording the album in comparison to their previous album, Suck It and See, with more emphasis into creating a "studio album" according to frontman Alex Turner. The band incorporated new instruments on the album, including the piano, organ, Hohner Guitaret, and vintage drum machine. Thematically, the album concerns frustration surrounding tainted romance, and loneliness.
Commercially, the album has become one of Arctic Monkeys' most successful albums to date, topping charts in several countries, and reaching top ten positions in many more. Topping the UK Albums Chart, it sold over 157,000 copies in its first week and also went on to be one of the UK's best-selling vinyl albums of the decade, selling 73,000 units. In addition, the album became the band's most successful in the United States, with the single "Do I Wanna Know?" being the first song by the band to enter the Billboard Hot 100 and the album topping four Billboard charts and being certified platinum in the US in 2017.
The album received critical acclaim, with critics praising its darker and groovier sound in comparison to the band's previous records. It featured in many year-end lists as one of the best albums of 2013, including the BBC who named it the best of 2013. At the 2014 BRIT Awards, Arctic Monkeys won British Album of the Year for AM. It was also nominated for the 2013 Mercury Prize and received a Best Rock Performance nomination for "Do I Wanna Know?" at the 57th Grammy Awards in 2015. NME hailed it the best album of the decade and, just a month after its release, ranked it 449 on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Rolling Stone ranked it 346 in their 2020 edition of their 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list.
Best part was dad saying “rock and roll is not dead” and that’s essentially what Alex said when they won a Brit award for this album during his acceptance speech
Exactly what I was thinking. Their new albums suggest otherwise, though.
good catch, I'm sure they had to reimburse the mic lol
It was also satire lol
Nice catch, but 12:37 was probably my favourite part.
@@xPandaaaah Well they changed but there are a tons of other indie rock bands still. One of my favourite is Kaleo.
hearing “do i wanna know?” live was an experience that i will never forget.
omg you’re so lucky
Rock en Seine, Paris, 2022. unreal.
Agreeed
Jealous
I agree!! i saw them at Primavera and their performance was 10/10 💯🔥
'I Wanna Be Yours' is fantastic. It's actually originally a poem by John Cooper Clarke, a British punk poet. But the way Alex Turner brings it to life is phenomenal!
the lyrics of this one always stood out to me, makes so much sense its from a poem!!
I did not know that. Thanks!
John Cooper Clarke is such a great personality.
actually wrote the poem in my partners valentines card when i was maybe 15 XD . also a fan of the arctic monkeys its also our song.
I remember a while back the lyrics popped up as a question on The Chase asking which song it was used in, and I was like "OOH OOH I KNOW THAT ONE"
The whole damn album is heaven on earth. Like damn.
Yk what the whole damn band is heaven on earth.
When this came out everyone went crazy for a good 6 months. Everyone wanted to listen to it and it was everywhere.
nah its ass
But you’ve gotta do the debut album too! They were a huge cultural explosion with that album in the U.K. when they broke on the scene in 2006, the biggest since Oasis in 1994 and no one has come close since 👍
This. It's literally their best album, it's a landmark in britpop and music.
Easily their best album. I've been listening to Arctic Monkeys for over 10 years and only their debut has never left my playlists. Absolute classic.
So much energy, it's such a fun listen.
Uh boy, we got some cringe 90's kid that can let rock and roll go...
@@xavicampoverde6031 what-
@@xavicampoverde6031 nah, it's just their best album.
Alex Turner rightly gets a lot of the praise for being the writer of the songs, frontman and lead vocals on 99% and generally being Mr Cool but the rest of the band are outrageously good too, Matt Helders is an absolute beast on the drums and backing vocals, Nick and Jamie too, seriously they sound even better live than on their records.
I don't remember if the guitarrist is Nick or Jamie, but the guitar is always the worst part of the arctic monkeys, obviously there are great guitars in the albums, but the guitarrist is 2 levels below anyone music-wise, you have to just see that Alex is the one who plays solos and in TBHAC the hired a 3rd guitarrist to play the complex guitars, like the solo on 4 stars out of 5. I'm not saying that he is bad, but he's very mediocre compared to his bandmates
@@L0bo0z Jamie can play tho. because he done so many solo guitar songs in the Humbug Era.
Tranquility base at kings theater live performance is 🔥
jamie is not that good a guitarist
@@accioashlynhe’s been more consistent lately though, i remember he would always mess up in their earlier shows but now he like actually plays his parts correctly recently. :,)
i love how the dad is like instantly into it and just having the best time ever
Right I love it
I tried recommending it to my dad, I didn't expect him to get too hooked up to it. Now we vibe with Arctic Monkeys together
He didn’t really like it
of course he likes it, this is grandpa music *snores
Every song in AM could be a single tbh. It's a masterpiece.
Bueno, no estoy muy de acuerdo con eso pero respeto tus opiniones :)
Some of them are not parte of my favorite Like "I want it all" or "One for the road"
I agree
give one for the road a good listen, probably my favorite off the album@@Mateoeo0201
@@drywend¿Por qué no? En mi opinión es un álbum increíble. No hay un sola canción mal.
Just so you guys know I Wanna Be Yours was actually originally a poem by John Cooper Clarke that is studied in schools in the UK. He has performed the poem version live with the Arctic Monkeys before.
Holy shit I studied it in Year 9, I was wondering why my teacher randomly pulled out an Arctic Monkeys song 😂
omg i've been a fan for ages and i didn't know that esfsjhbeshf
The Monkeys went to see JCC perform when they were starting out and told him they were in a band but wanted to change the name. He asked them what they were called and when they told him he said they should stick with it so they did
He lives in my town ahaha! I see him quite often....
That is true, the first verse is word for word, after that, Alex wrote the rest which became the song. When introduced JCC asked what the name of the band was and they were not sure it sounded right and we looking at changing it, JCC said it sounded great, so they kept it.
"Do I wanna Know" has been used in so many car commercials at this point its no surprise Kevin recognized the riff.
*BMW starts* *riff starts playing* *car drifting off in the city* *Alex Turner's voice intensifying*
Imma go and buy a Ford Pickup🥵
They also play it at hockey games
As soon as that song starts playing I don't know how someone doesn't immediately picture a ram commerical
Pickup truck intensifies
I'm from the same town as Arctic Monkeys, and I love seeing others discover them properly for the first time - so PLEASE introduce your dad to their debut 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not'. It is all anyone in England listened to that year. It was perfect.
Ayyy Sheffield gang!

Big up sheff!
WITH A GREASY CHIP BUTTTYYYYY!!!! I agree, They HAVE to listen to Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not. The dads mind will be BLOWN
It's one of the best debuts in modern music
I know everyone goes to R U Mine, Do I wanna know and Why'd you only call me when you're high as the best tunes...…..and they are brilliant, but Number 1 Party anthem and I wanna be yours are actually masterpieces man. There's so much emotion in those tunes.

@@judebarry7065 12:37 I read this comment as he said it 😭😭
Arctic Monkeys is really for those who can appreciate both popular and alternative music. i don't get the hate this album gets, it's super fun and it has soul, it's catchy and many different people can enjoy, and that takes real talent to be able to connect so wildly like that
I think the reason people give this album hate is because this album is the most popular one, but isn't quite representative of the rest of their discography. Prior to this their music is more punk, less pop, and more rawness and less polish.
It's definitely their most cleanly presented and shiny work, but I think it stings the fans a bit to know that the album everyone knows their favorite band from happens to be one the most divorced from their body of work.
It's why Radiohead fans get upset about the album Pablo Honey. Creep's still a banger song, but if a Radiohead fan hears you say Pablo Honey is your favorite their eyes will roll so hard you'd be worried they might pull something.
@@JustAJauneArc explained well! love Arctic Monkeys, and this album is great. but i start on R U Mine instead of DIWK? Overplayed big time.
Who hates this album? It’s critically acclaimed and their best selling album
@@cjscala87 that’s why a lot of people dislike it. It sold the most but it’s not what encapsulates their sound. Especially for long time fans
@@JustAJauneArc actually best am album might still be the first one

“They know how to close an album.” I totally agree with that statement. That is an absolute fact about the Monkeys that i think a bit overlooked. Like straight every album they finish it so perfectly. But my favorite is by far the Humbug’s closing song The Jeweller’s Hands. Just go and listen. No words needed. I feel like they are not closing an album but closing my whole life.
•edit•
now we have a exception..
505, A certain Romance, That’s where your wrong. Closing tracks on every album are perfect
The jewelers hands is by far their most underrated song. It’s my favorite from them atm
The exception for me is The Ultracheese. While it does fit very well as a closer, it's also in my opinion the weakest track in TBHC
Perfect Sense didn't feel like a closer :(
Best closing of any of their albums 100% correct
watching people be excited over music, especially a band i have loved for years, honestly makes me so happy
same
SAMEEEE it makes me so happy
Being 16-17 going through the tumblr era when this album came out was such a special time
100% the same for me, being that age in college listening to this with your mates in the summer time, amazing.
peak of humanity
@@ThePaynes2022imagine summers at Sheffield uni when these albums were coming out 😂 would have been insane
I don't understand how some arctic monkeys fans hate this album. I personally love all their projects, from their 'Debut' to 'Tranquillity base hotel & Casino'. I understand its different from their first 4 albums but its still so good (just a different sound). Can't wait to listen to 'The Car'.
i mean i can understand why they don't like this one that much, this is where they drastically changed their sound. i'm aware that all of their albums sound different and that's a reason why i like this band that much, but this change was really really agressive to me at least. i liked this album when it came out, and still listen to it, but it's probably my least favorite from them
Because, mostly, we want more of what we like. early AM fans got used to their raw, rough sound and this came across as over-produced and far more "mainstream". That's my 2 cents.
The only albums of theirs that I REALLY like are TBH&C and humbug.
To Josh : it’s very simple. Arctic Monkeys were bringing the promess of a new brilliant wave of punk rock era but unfortunately they turned off to make boring pop rock music.
That’s why this album was a huge shock and deception for many of us.
Cannot wait to hear their new album either! I love the fact that they change up their vibe on every album. It's been so fun seeing them progress and evolve over the years! Really love their new song they just dropped. I played it for my boyfriend and the first thing he said is "This is great cruising music!" And I was like "What are the odds? The new album's called car!" So.. the vibe is totally felt! Alex turner is one of the greatest musicians of our time and AM- the best band. You cannot convince me otherwise. Take care!
13:00 I love that he mentions the War Pigs similarity to the Arabella riff cause that's actually a pretty direct reference by the band. When they play this live, a lot of the times they'll transition the riff into the War Pigs one for a quick breakdown right before the solo, it's dope.
yes or even in the end (same riff)
yep, facts
Came looking through comments for this
AM sounds familiar because they sounds like black Sabbath, not the voice though
Fireside - One of the most criminally underrated songs I know
THIS 🙌
no fr it's one of my favs off the album
literally!!
YES!!!! its so lyrically beautiful
don't be that "criminally underrated" person, that comment is so annoying
I honestly think that Kevin would absolutely love Humbug. Hope you guys do the whole discography, AM is one of the best bands of our generation.
Yes. Me too.
100%
I really need to see him reacting to this record
Humbug is so great, crying lightning, cornerstone and secret door are all some of their best
Clearly he's gonna have an eargasm when listening to humbug
Also I think that listening to both of last shadow puppets' albums would be a great idea
Gotta be the debut album next guys, its a key part of UK culture!! Can't wait
Sounds like they won't be doing their debut album sadly
@@joelikesthings why does it sound like they won't be doin it?
@@JM-wh1lv he said in the video that he'd show him "FWM, AM and TBH" before the new album. Not sure why but it's what he said. Sounded reasonably concrete but idk.
Humbug crazy too
If I'm not mistaken, they will be doing the debut album, but they'll be doing it last.
I know it might not get the views this or the new album will do, but AM's first album is really, really important to a lot of British people. It was raw, working class and refreshing. Hope you do it!
I also think you'd find some of the lyricism intriguing!
one of, if not THE best album of the 2010s. literally no skips. every song is fucking brilliant from start to end. the drums during r u mine? must also be one of the best in our generation like oh my god
The drums in r u mine are actually insane. Matt is a beast on drums for sure
nah, its ass
This isn't even the best AM album of that decade
"Do I Wanna Know?" was actually the song that brought them to new height and fame.
AM themselves had always been a sole British grunge band and like the Queen, early on in their career, their presence in the US was relatively muted but when "Do I Wanna Know?" debutted, it suddenly gained alot of traction and it even, for the first time in their entire career, broke into the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at 70. Despite being a mere 70, it was even nominated as the best rock performance during the 2015 Grammy Awards. It was even ranked 3rd as the "Most iconic guitar riff of all time" by Guitar World in 2019.
It's the song that made them what they are today.
i thought why’d you only call me when your high was the biggest one? it blew up on tumblr
@@babypipess7227 It wasn't. "Do I Wanna Know?" was what broke the mould for them and changed how people perceived them.
"Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High" wasn't even on Billboards Top 100 and it's on the UK Charts at 72 I think whereas "Do I Wanna Know?" and "R U Mine?" both outperformed the song you mentioned as "R U Mine?" also got up to the 20+ on the UK Charts like "Do I Wanna Know?". Also, "R U Mine?" was certified platinum and became the best-selling song for them.
Yea the song you mentioned blew up on tiktok and tumblr but that doesn't mean that it's their ultimate "big one". The other two outshone it 3x over.
Love that truck commercial that I heard before I knew who they were as a band
"a sole British grunge band" I don't think so.
Did you just call them grunge? 🤣
Arabella is one of my all time favorite songs. I'm so glad you guys did this album
Im still shook some people dont see the similarities to War Pigs by Black Sabbath!!
me too !!
RIGHT@@jewishjakefromstatefarm
same I love playing it on rock band
Hilarious that your dad mentioned the similarities with War Pigs during Arabella. I saw them in 2013 at Madison Square Garden, touring this album and they actually melded that part of War Pigs into the live performance
They often do that
Masterpiece is one of those words that gets thrown around way too often, but here for AM, I feel it deserves that title. This really is a modern rock masterpiece.
I'm excited for the reaction to "Tranquility Base" because it is most definitely the type of album where it gets better the more times you listen to. The drastic change in genre was wild but it works very well
For sure. Can't wait for the reaction.
TBHC Is savage am waiting
1st time listening: I get it, but I don't think is that cool
2nd time listening: Ok, there's more cool songs that I remembered
3rd time listening: I JUST WANTED TO BE ONE OF THE STROKES

It’s just a poor Bowie impression to my ear 🤷🏻♂️
R U Mine is one of my favourite songs of all time, the unconventional vocal flow, the lyrics, the drummer letting lose, the guitar riffs. Absolutely perfect
Can we just appreciate how amazing of a writer Alex Turner is? Do I Wanna Know and R U Mine are so INCREDIBLY written. The way he finishes a line with half a word and starts the next time with the other half. He can literally do whatever he wants. I also never really appreciated how insane the drums are on R U Mine until now. WILD.
ps: ily guys 👏🏻
Alex Turner actually incorporated War pigs riff into a break before the solo in some of their live show. There's couple of videos on youtube, AND IT'S AMAZING.
We went to go watch them at vegas. Life is beautiful festival

Arctic Monkeys are my favourite band. The way they capture the British culture so incredibly in the first few albums, to their beautiful smooth romanticised rock on AM, to the 70s vibes from Tranquility Base, which is without a doubt my favourite album of all time. An absolute stellar band who take a risk and absolutely hit it out the park👌🏻🤩
The instrumentals on Knee socks is crazy underrated. Also Alex Turner was in the band The Last Shadow Puppets which he experiment his voice on their songs and it worked perfectly
This is definitely an album that gives you an entire body with no skips.. it’s commercially appealing but without losing his rock credibility. Definitely an amazing project

One of the things that really makes this work is a combination of Kevin’s musical background and disconnect from pop and urban culture. Plus being an open minded person makes him the perfect audience for Connor.

Perfect album. Alex Turner definitely has hip hop influences with his multi-syllable rhyming, metaphors & phrasing. The album has a great theme, all relating to the AM (time) lovestruck vibes, obviously AM standing ‘Arctic Monkeys’ too. The writing is phenomenal, not just the production. Like I said, perfect. 10/10.
For me, the greatest example of rap singing is from the debut album. He sings on such a quick pace, rhyming so well too
Like he said, he wanted the album to sound like 50cents "in da club"
Might be an unpopular opinion but I have to say this is definitely my favourite monkeys album. Every single song is amazing

Don't think that's an unpopular opinion at all, I'd say that technically AM is perfect, but the nostalgia of their first album might just peak it for me
Definitely not an unpopular opinion lol
you know it's not an unpopular opinion when it's the most mainstream album
After this record you must listen The Last Shadow Puppets' "Everything you've come to expect". I think is the turning point in the evolution from this, more commercial oriented persona, Alex Turner, to the crooner that is nowadays. Hope you'll do it guys!

If you want AM hip hop crossovers you should listen to "pretty visitors" on Humbug and "Temptation greets you like your naughty friend" , a brainstorm B side which is one of the only AM songs with a feature on it.
people who dislike this album simply because its their most popular... YOUR LOSS, we still rocking to this whole album to this day
It's more that the earlier albums don't get the credit. This album doesn't have their early British India charm. Don't get me wrong is a good album. But you'll find Americans love this album but the British love the first 2.
Gotta do Queens Of The Stone Age!
Josh Hommes influences on this band are undeniable (especially since they're good friends and he worked with them on AM and Humbug.)

I've followed the Arctic Monkeys from the beginning. I introduced them to tons of my friend. It's just been amazing following their progression. I think Alex Turner is a great poet. They are awesome live, I've had the pleasure of seeing them live 5 times. If you get the chance I definitely recommend.
Been awhile since I've come back to this album. Glad you played it 👏

Bloom or Depression cherry would be nice
I'd be really interested in hearing your reactions to Hozier's Wasteland, Baby! It's his second album and it's so diverse in how it sounds. There's something infectious about the instrumentals, with the sort of gritty bass and drums, not to mention the sheer beauty of the lyrics- I mean it wouldn't be a Hozier album without some superb lyricism. It might not fit into the category of music you like, but it's a mindblowing experience either way. :))
Loveee that album, sometimes I just randomly think of the “ it’s five o’clock in soho babyyy” lyric cause it’s so catchy lol
I agree!
Oh my gosh yes
mad sounds absolutely deserves all the love, a sweet lullaby that just cradles you with its soft rhythm
The fact that he mentioned the album needed a change in tempo and then the next song proceeded to change in tempo was incredible timing.
This album is really overhated. Like I get it, it's their most popular and sounds the most... idk typical early 2010s rock?
But like it still sounds great and Alex Turner's voice on here? Might be some of the smoothest and most infectious vocal delivery he's ever done fr.
The most infectious vocal delivery is the first album he’s not quite captured that rawness and scrappy energy since. His voice over time has just been diluted over time as he’s developed into a cheesy crooner.
@@gregorybobson9328 It was great on the first album, and I do wish he kept more of the scrappy and raw energy on some tracks here cus it would've been cool, but I do think it's a bit catchier and while I wish there was more roughness, I do like smooth Alex Turner as well
His vocals are the best on this album than any of them! Proper smooth and matts backups just make it
People just like to hate on popular things.

Man, I loved this video, just made me fall back in love with an album I most definitely burnt myself out on, what a brilliant video, loved it... Rock n Roll is not dead!!!
I'm in love with the singles for their upcoming album, they sound so matured.. Hoping to see a video on it after the album comes out later this month!
Interesting Kevin mentions Arabella reminds him of War Pigs, yet they often mix the two songs together when they play live!
Whatever People Say I Am is so good, don’t rob your dad of it!!
Being from the U.K. and watching this gave me the same feeling as first time I heard this album. Amazing to see others from opposite side of the world appreciate this album. The dad here took words out of my brain. Great stuff.. off to watch ur other videos!
Seen them in concert in buffalo, when I was a senior in highschool and it’s one of my most memorable concerts ever, he sounds exactly the same live. It was so unreal incredible talented band ! Hope they never stop making music !
Love this. Can wait for Tranquility Base! Any chance of the debut though? I think Kevin would love it
8:18 In 2013 when AM won brit award Alex said in the speech "that rock and roll seems like It's fading alway sometimes, but It will never dies"
a 10/10 album for me, not a single skip and I wanna be yours is angelic, truly
Just stumbled upon your channel. Just wanted to say that I LOVE the focus on an entire album. Subscribed!
Can’t wait for the Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino reaction! Criminally underrated album, I have a feeling Kevin is going to really appreciate it.
Their best album imo! IT IS SO SPECIAL TO ME 🥰
I would love it if y'all did Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. I know it's not a lot of people's favorites, but I feel like you both would vibe and enjoy!!
Love that album. If One Point Perspective comes up on a shuffle I need to immediately queue up American Sports haha

@@seanypark505 oh absolutely and the amount of times I’ve belted I put a taqueria on the moon is far too much 😂
i discovered arctic monkeys in 2011 and this 2013 was my first “new release” by them and i instantly this album would someday be received as a classic
glad to know that you will be recording more of arctic monkeys reactions, cant wait to watch :D
Seriously, this album does not miss! Every song is iconic.
I bet your dad would love the “The Forever Story” -JID! It’s so diverse and lyrical and overall an amazing album especially for this sort of listening!
He sounds weird
@@gamesmaster1060 what??
Would have to start with The Never Story.
Every single album they’ve put out in there own respective way have been amazing and I’m excited for there new one October 21st. There single release “There’d Better Be A Mirrorball” from there new album “The Car” is sooo good 🥹 been a fan easily since 08’ and still my all time favourite band 🫡
I fell off this album for a while, maybe because I’m so into and used to hearing TBH&C and The Car now but your dad’s reaction just reminded me why I love it so much.
saw them live around a month ago and yeah this album goes SOO hard live its insane, This and their debut. defo a must see!
i bet you look good on the dancefloor still is their best live imo. the whole crowd goes insane at the drop
Where did you see them? I also saw them and it was indeed insaane, his vocals peaked
@@reesewilkerson529 pukkelpop belgium!
I'm seeing them in January, did they play some songs from all the albums?
@@katvelyte yeah if they dont change the setlist. They played everything. Mostly AM and debut+Fav worst nightmare tho.
I've listened to these songs hundreds of times, but listening to them once with you all breathes fresh air into the music. Thank you guys for what you do ✌️
Don’t know how I’ve never discovered you but thoroughly enjoyed your two AM videos. Would love to see you do the rest of the albums.
Even better… a first listen of ‘The Car’ for both of you?
When it comes out of course…
GOING DOWN AS ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME !!!!!!!!!!
This is so freaking cool. What a great video, honestly. I understand the "sonic painting" you're trying to show Kevin, three big, immensely different sounds. But I really think Humbug is a must, the textures, the rawness of the instruments on the mix, Alex's vocals and lyrical prowess, the direction Josh Homme gave them for this album and their musical genius combined, make it in my opinion one of their biggest works yet.
What the hell, just make the whole discography, please! 🥵
