Dear Julie, Especially as a new , follower, Yank & Midwesterner, (Chicago/La Grange, and then Des Moines, IA) love watching you and your videos all the time. I always wanted to live in England. So Happy that Woody & Twiggy are home and safe. The Waes Hael was fantastic (we would eat figgy pudding). We would Yell really loud Waes Hael then take a sip of spiced cider and yell again Drinc Hael and pour some on the ground beneath the apple trees. "Wassail!" is a toast, literally meaning "be in good health". The reply to this is traditionally "Drink-hail!" Here We Come A-wassailing - not always sung in this order or in key depending on how much Wassailing (visiting neighbours orchards while drinking cider) was accomplished lol 1. Here we come a-wassailing Among the leaves so green; Here we come a-wand'ring So fair to be seen. Our wassail cup is made Of the rosemary tree, And so is your beer Of the best barley. (Chorus) 3. We are not daily beggars That beg from door to door; But we are neighbours' children, Whom you have seen before. (Chorus) 4. Call up the butler of this house, Put on his golden ring. Let him bring us up a glass of beer, And better we shall sing. (Chorus) 5. We have got a little purse Of stretching leather skin; We want a little of your money To line it well within. (Chorus) 6. Bring us out a table And spread it with a cloth; Bring us out a mouldy cheese, And some of your Christmas loaf. (Chorus) 7. You won't have to chase the beavers..just wait until somewhere floods and then you will find their dam. As a motto said that I saw the other day.."It's one dam thing after another." WEll, the cartoon of the beaver was cute!
I’m Louisiana Creole and a common part of a proper Mardi Gras celebration is a cake called a “ king cake” that has a little plastic or ceramic baby in it called “la fève” and whoever gets the slice with the baby is king for the day!
Bonjou Ari. Glad to hear you are still following a tradition that come from the... Romans who, on the Saturne day, shared a round cake with their whole household, slaves included. The lucky one who found the bean was for the day the Prince of the household. Christians followed, eating their "galette des Rois" the 6th of january, when the Wise Men (les Rois mages) were presented to the new born Christ. Then, another tradition was added : the "King" had to buy drinks so, as you can imagine, many ate the bean... Hence the ceramique "fève", first shaped as a baby in remembrance of Jésus, then in more modern times in many shapes and colours... Voilà, voilà, Ari. Bonne journée. From Nantes 🇨🇵

It seems Twiggy and Woody had lots of fun spotting countless potencial dams downriver. I almost feel sorry for them - but of course they must do their work too! And Ben? He's amazing!!!
We are so relieved and happy for you to have the Beavers back safely at Mapperton again. Well done Ben and Chris. Best wishes Christina and Nick, Crediton, Devon UK
Such fun watching the successful search for Twiggy and Woody. Glad they are back. Maybe next year the wassailers could learn the actual tune and lyrics to Here We Come A-Wassailing! :) What a fun tradition.
As a Canadian I find it hilarious all that you do to with your Beavers. They might be our national animal but we spend more time trying to deal with them and are seen as a real nuisance.
I guess it entirely depends on whether you're in a not-enough-beavers situation, or a too-many-beavers situation. Most of the world is in a not-enough-beavers situation. For those of you in a too-many-beavers situation, I can only send my thoughts and prayers. Best of luck to you.
Mapperton looks splendid in the snow! I love hearing about the beavers and their adventures! If you have anybody in your family, that can write and illustrate, their adventures would make lovely little children’s books & big children like me. I’m looking forward to the adventures of Ben and Chris this year! Love from Vermont
So glad the beavers were found. I had seen on Instagram that they had escaped. I love how your channel includes everyone involved in the running of Mapperton and of course, Julie and Luke.

Julie, did you ever go to a Madrigal dinner at Christmas time in the States. They serve wassel drink a type of hot spiced cider. I thought the song came from England in Henry the 8th times. Ask your American friends if they sang that song during the days leading up to Christmas. Most people 40 and older know it.

I'm laughing at your wailsailing, my dog looked around wondering what was happening. Had to tell her TV. Great episode. Glad you found the beavers. Thanks for sharing.
Let me redeem myself after my prior comment and say that I absolutely loved your Wassailing ceremony! There are several definitions or variations of wassailing, but I think I like yours best of all! Hope you do it again next year. Re: the beavers. They are wild animals; hence, they are part of your "rewilding" endeavour. Now that you know they won't stay - and, if you love them - let them go. They will find their way back to you through the years - and come back each time with magical tales of their travels! Julie, I bet you could turn their adventures into a children's book.
I don't think they can be just 'let go' into the English countryside yet - tho that may change soon as they've now been classified as a 'native species' here in Scotland.
They definitely can’t just let them go. They got them from an organization and promised that organization they would provide them with the correct environment, woods, food, and safety. A different environment wouldn’t have what they need. That’s why a specific enclosure was made for them. That’s why they were removed from where they were in Scotland. The environment they were living in wasn’t ideal. Most importantly, they need to be kept safe from predators, animals and humans alike. Yes, they are wild animals, but they are living in their natural habitat. It’s not like they are living in a house or cages or something awful like that. When it comes to providing a safe sanctuary for wild animals, there needs to be a balance with providing them with their natural habitat keeping them in a safe place.
@@findingbeautyinthepain8965 I was unaware that they were procured from an organization to which they'd made promises. But, yes, otherwise they could be let go. They would find a suitable habitat (unless England is just bereft of such). As for predators, we are all subject to them. That's part of the natural cycle of life.
@@lorigray9291 Yes, their son, Nester actually helped the organization trap and relocate the beavers from Scotland to England, which is pretty cool! I could be wrong, but in one of the episodes on the beavers they explained the beavers need certain woods, a river, and certain foods, which is why they had to have the enclosure built. That is what leads me to believe that all of England or even all of Mapperton isn’t a fit environment. But I think the main thing is the predators (for now) because the goal is rewinding. I think once these beavers have some pups that live to adulthood, predators won’t be such a big deal. But if one of these beavers dies, the entire rewinding project dies with it. They could always acquire more beavers, but I think the more beavers die on their watch, the less organizations will be willing to give them more beavers. Maybe they should have gotten two males and two females from the start, so it would be much less of an issue if one falls prey to a predator. A lot of what I said is just my best educated guess based off the information Mapperton has provided us with, so I’m sure I’m wrong about some thing. I hope Julie will provide more information in another video.
This is my favorite episode! I love the beavers and I never knew what wassailing actually was. Here in Ohio, it is just drinking mulled wine and walking around the neighborhood singing carols -- apparently we do it all incorrectly! Who knew! I like the version much better!
Hi Julie and Luke, Ben did an amazing job, tracking the beavers, along with Chris they had great success, in finding them. My new lesson learned today is wassail, that is a great tradition, to have every year, for a great harvest. This is a fun episode, thanks for sharing. Love from N.Y.
The drone shot of Mapperton in the snow is spectacular! It was my good fortune to spend August 1980 through February 1981 abroad, dividing the time between England, France and various Western European cities. My time in England was spent mostly in Datchet, Windsor/Eaton, Slough, Reading and Staines-upon-Thames. There were many days in London, occasional travel North to Coventry Cathedral and Oxford, South to Leeds Castle in Kent and Brighton, then West to Bath. After a trip to Wales, I traveled to the continent. It was snowing on the way to Dover where the channel crossing took place on a hovercraft during a gale. It was the only eastward crossing that day and it was horrendous! The snowfall continued in France during the SNCF train ride to Paris Gare du Nord. Since I was still seasick, I found the nearest hotel to the train station on Boulevard de Magenta. Hours after my stomach finally calmed from the effects of the channel crossing, I walked down the boulevard to see Place de la République covered in snow. There I found a Monoprix to purchase some food when it finally felt safe to eat. I can also recall a veritable blizzard on my way to Sognefjord from Bergen, Norway and a rare December snowstorm the day I left Venice. Chuck
What a fun episode! I remember that song from my childhood. Interesting to know it’s origins and great to see it used in action! Glad the beavers were found. I’m sure they were doing what comes naturally to them. Hope they become settled and happy at Mapperton.
I really enjoyed this episode with you finding the missing beavers, the traditional scaring away evil spirits in your Apple trees 🌳 You work so hard but enjoy life with such enthusiasm ❄️❤️
!8 degrees inside super warm? You must be kidding! I'm Norwegian and used to snow and super cold weather outside, but we refuse to be cold inside our homes. 21 degrees inside is minimum. Poor Julie!
It was so fun to see how into it Julie gets with the traditions. I would be just like her and make lots of noise when Wassailing. Great vlog and as a Canadian I am glad the recapture of the beavers was successful.
beavers escape, wait until they find the canal systems. That would be priceless to see but cost a bit to remove. then again, maybe an old overgrown canal.
So glad Chris was able to get Twiggy and Woody back safely and really interesting watching Chris and Ben track them. The Wassailing ceremony has got to become one of Mapperton's time honoured traditions. It looked cold but good fun.
THX SO MUCH FOR THE BEAVERS--glad they are safe, but after that spa treat, I hope they don't venture away again, thinking the return will include another spa treat. Loved the wassling, grew up with that tradition in New Jersey USA and although quite pagan, it is fun-love the popcorn addition.
Julie, thanks you for being so real and funny while you listen to your husband start off the vlog. You crack me up. Love the two of you. Love watching the two of you. Have a blessed day
We sang this song as kids in southern Indiana, but I always assumed that wassailing meant caroling. Learn something new every day :D Here we come a-wassailing Among the leaves so green; Here we come a-wand'ring So fair to be seen. Love and joy come to you, And to you your wassail too; And God bless you and send you a Happy New Year And God send you a Happy New Year. Our wassail cup is made Of the rosemary tree, And so is your beer Of the best barley. We are not daily beggars That beg from door to door; But we are neighbours' children, Whom you have seen before. Call up the butler of this house, Put on his golden ring. Let him bring us up a glass of beer, And better we shall sing. We have got a little purse Of stretching leather skin; We want a little of your money To line it well within. Bring us out a table And spread it with a cloth; Bring us out a mouldy cheese, And some of your Christmas loaf. God bless the master of this house Likewise the mistress too, And all the little children That round the table go. Good master and good mistress, While you're sitting by the fire, Pray think of us poor children Who are wandering in the mire.
I loved all chapters. Super well produced and great new things like wassailing (Julie - I heard that as a US kid too but thought it was just begging for booze!) and loved the beaver update. Really great, thank you!
What a fun vlog!! Glad the beavers were caught and the Wassailing was wonderful!! I am from England but did not know what Wassail meant or that tradition, was good to learn of it.
Those slippers look very nice, they remind me of the LLBean “Wicked Good Slippers “, everyone in our family wears them, very warm comfortable and the outdoor sole is perfect when you have to step outdoors for the mail or run to the store. Enjoy yours!
Oh I do hope they choose to stay. The land needs them. I am thrilled to see you maintaining ancient traditions! We pagans do these on a regular basis, but seeing a real orchard wassailed is sooooo cool!
We love Chameau wellies. They come in RED ,blue, ,purple green ,yellow and black. They are nice and flexible so they don't crack across the ball of the foot and leak after the first season like the famed Hunter Boots.
Fun episode!! Loved he wassailing. I remember the song from my childhood. Fun to learn the history of it. The beavers. Very interesting about twiggy and woody. Will look forward to seeing more of them. Won’t the area become more swampy as they continue “their work”?
The beaver story was really great to watch. It appears that it may be harder than you thought to get them to fix your watershed. I don't blame them. What happens when they've done the work that you want? What would it take to let them wander freely?
Here we come a-wassailing Among the leaves so green; Here we come a-wand’ring So fair to be seen. Love and joy come to you, And to you your wassail too; And God bless you and send you a Happy New Year And God send you a Happy New Year.
Here we go a Wassiling, a Wassiling, Here we go a Wassiling, a Wassiling, among the trees so green ! ........No idea where that came from, but I must have heard it before ? I had to share.
The beaver hunt was super and they did enjoy doing it. Wassail, Wassail...Here I am, a Pagan in Philadelphia wishing I could be with you...what fun. We do have Morris dancers here who usually can be seen on Beltaine dancing on Belmont Plateau as the sun rises. Thanks for this.
Went for dinner to the Elizabethan Room where we encouraged to shout "wassail" everytime somebody arrived and we would drink a toast. Very drunken night!
Growing up, the recommendation was to blow up beaver dams with dynamite. The two escaping just made me laugh and sure didn't surprise me. Just please promise us you won't plant any kudzu or honeysuckle. Oh, and please confirm that the pigs mentioned will be in a pen and not wild. You do NOT want wild pigs.

Chuck
Ben needs some extra pairs of Wellies
Yay gorgeous Emma Bridgewater mugs!
Love watching your progress…so much fun ❤learning lots of interesting things👍
So happy that they are safe and home.❤️
What a fun episode! I remember that song from my childhood. Interesting to know it’s origins and great to see it used in action!
Glad the beavers were found. I’m sure they were doing what comes naturally to them. Hope they become settled and happy at Mapperton.
Love this episode! Lovely scenery and fun with beaver guys!
This was so much fun!!! You guys are so entertaining!!
I live in the country as well, and can totally relate to your experiences with the beavers, fences et al. Thanks for sharing your life.
I wish I could see Mapperton veiled in snow with roaring fires in it's grand fireplaces!! You need a winter season for visitors too!!
Snow In Mapperton!!!
I really enjoyed this episode with you finding the missing beavers, the traditional scaring away evil spirits in your Apple trees 🌳 You work so hard but enjoy life with such enthusiasm ❄️❤️
Great fun! Made the BBC! Very impressive, they’ve been busy for sure. Little buggers!
Here we come a wassailing.... I thought this was a Christmas thing
Yes it is a Christmas song.
Loved this!!!! I never knew the story that went with the song! Amazing! Thank you for sharing this!!!! Please do more videos like this!
!8 degrees inside super warm? You must be kidding! I'm Norwegian and used to snow and super cold weather outside, but we refuse to be cold inside our homes. 21 degrees inside is minimum. Poor Julie!
I am glad you said the beavers were Eurasian. I was wondering where they came from. Can they be cross-bred with American beavers?
Really enjoyed this episode. Thanks to all the Mapperton team.
That is NOT apple cake! That is apple pie!☺ Love the new tradition and the education as to what wassailing is.
It was so fun to see how into it Julie gets with the traditions. I would be just like her and make lots of noise when Wassailing. Great vlog and as a Canadian I am glad the recapture of the beavers was successful.
U r such a joy😡 love from central Ohio
beavers escape, wait until they find the canal systems.
Have a blessed day
I’m thinking poor Chris is wondering what he’s gotten himself into. 😊
We do wassailing here in the USA as well. As a witch I can tell you we do it!
So glad you were able to recover the beavers without too much trouble. They were probably just on a mission to wasssil the hazel trees.
We sang this song as kids in southern Indiana, but I always assumed that wassailing meant caroling. Learn something new every day :D
Here we come a-wassailing Among the leaves so green; Here we come a-wand'ring So fair to be seen.
Might be my favorite episode. Thoroughly entertaining.
Bravo!!
Thanks!
THANK YOU KEN!
I loved all chapters. Super well produced and great new things like wassailing (Julie - I heard that as a US kid too but thought it was just begging for booze!) and loved the beaver update. Really great, thank you!
WooHoo! Woody & Twiggy are home. Fun first episode of the Ben and Chris Adventures. Cheers-
What a fun vlog!! Glad the beavers were caught and the Wassailing was wonderful!! I am from England but did not know what Wassail meant or that tradition, was good to learn of it.
Dower House. Bravo!🎉
Those slippers look very nice, they remind me of the LLBean “Wicked Good Slippers “, everyone in our family wears them, very warm comfortable and the outdoor sole is perfect when you have to step outdoors for the mail or run to the store. Enjoy yours!
The beavers need their own channel with wildcams since they already made headlines! 😀Wonderful episode, thank you
Oh I do hope they choose to stay.
Hopefully one day I can go the the Christmas Fair. Love to see all the goodies!
Living in Texas Piney woods for nearly 30 years, we have battled beavers over our pond, damming up our causeway.
I knew y'all would have issues......
The size of most of those "chips" makes me think "sampling", rather than "feeding".
We're certainly rooting for you to find them!!
We do a king cake with a plastic baby here for Mardi Gras. Very similar. Glad you got your beavers back.
Great episode!
Tasting History with Max Miller recently did a whole episode on the history of Wassail and Wassailing.
Here we come a-wassailing
Among the leaves so green;
Here we come a-wand’ring
So fair to be seen.
Love and joy come to you,
And to you your wassail too;
And God bless you and send you a Happy New Year
And God send you a Happy New Year.
Here we go a Wassiling, a Wassiling, Here we go a Wassiling, a Wassiling, among the trees so green ! ........No idea where that came from, but I must have heard it before ? I had to share.
That was a lot of fun! What a great tradition Wassailing! Glad the beavers are back!
Wassailing sounds like so much fun!
We make wassail every year - but never heard the story about the 12th night. Awesome video.
Such a great episode thank you so much! There was wonderful variety and lots of information and fun. Looking forward to the next installment! Xx
The weathers does look brutal in this episode. Made me cold just to watch the snow/sleet. Yikes! Hooray, the beavers are safe!
"Here we go a wassailing on a cold and frosting morning! " These are the lyrics as a Canadian I was taught .
The beaver hunt was super and they did enjoy doing it.
Wassail, Wassail...Here I am, a Pagan in Philadelphia wishing
I could be with you...what fun. We do have Morris dancers here
who usually can be seen on Beltaine dancing on Belmont Plateau
as the sun rises.
