I am so proud of you as an American that you embrace and learn the history of your husband's ancestors.
They’re her children’s ancestors, one of the reasons I did my Ancestry DNA, watching this because I have Montagu s in my ancestry. Henry 11 one of my great grandfathers
@@rolo4945 oh gosh yes more impactful when u think of it like that
This was great- Henry VI is not Tudor unfortunately.... Henry VII begins the Tudor period in 1485 with the Battle of Bosworth. Also Elizabeth I can also be considered 'Tudor' since she is Henry VIII's daughter- so the Tudor period can technically be 1485-1603. These ceilings are so gorgeous and so thankful you shared! Looks like similar molding in the Great Chamber to the Chapel Royal at Hampton Court Palace.
How wonderful to learn about the history of Mapperton and Hinchingbrooke. I loved Julie's dress as well :)
Thank you so much and hope to see you here again on Sunday!
THIS is absolutley my Cuppa Tea. Enjoying this while Toronto is in yet ANOTHER month total Lockdown. Oh, to be in England!!! What a beautiful home. Just WOW!!!! Thanks so much for sharing your enthusiasm for History with the rest of Us!!! 🇨🇦👑🇬🇧 and... yes, You look amazing too.. very pretty dress.
She is a great example of people who married into the aristocracy and embrace their lifestyles and history with graceful passion!
Julie, it’s very exciting to hear you now sound so knowledgeable of so much English history, major historical events, & the impact these events & time have had on your husband’s family & ancestors! Plus, your presentation style is very casual, friendly, & enjoyable!!
I’m excited to have just recently discovered your channel! Best Wishes to you & your family regarding this channel & the future of your beautiful Manor home!!
Thank you so much!
You crack me up.
All this ornate detail, painstakingly described and ended with a wonderful natural Julie statement:
"It's a wrap!"....as always, Unexpectedly,she gave me a great laugh!!!
Love this so much. When you spoke about your family motto it choked me up. The last year has indeed had many ship wrecks.
I really enjoyed this. What a wonderful insight into the history of your home. I have subscribed, so I'm looking forward to learning more. And I think your dress is divine. Cheers from Adelaide. 😊
From a fellow American-Henry VI was not a Tudor. The Tudor era began with Henry VII in 1485, went through Henry VIII, Edward, Mary, and finished with Elizabeth’s death in 1603. It’s a lot and can be confusing! Love England and my visits to Tudor era houses!
Gorgeous dress Julie! Loved this tour.
The Tudor ceilings are beautiful!!
So when can we get to see Hinchingbrooke, Julie? I can’t wait, so excited😍
As a child I fell in love with tudor history and tudor architecture, thanks to a wonderful history teacher I had. Wonderful to see the non renovated parts of the house. The ceilings are simply breath taking.
Henry VII was the first of the Tudor Kings. Henry VI was from the Plantagenet dynasty.
A wonderful to tour, ceiling r magnificent, those little secret hideouts make❤️ love it's history, u do excellent tutorial, can't wait 2c whole estate hi, thank you Julie👏🏼
Love the dress 👗
Hello how are you doing 😊😊😊☺️👋
Great video, and what amazes me the most is your ability to explain so many things of history and building without any notes, but still keeping great tempo and structure. Really great!
Glad you enjoyed it
When I saw the beautiful ceiling, it immediately reminded me of the one at Hampton Court! Didn't realise they are so rare, what a treasure you have there!
Thank you for the tour! It is a special place and the history was fantastic!
Wonderful tour! Love your enthusiasm and pride in your family’s amazing history. Love it!
Julie is wonderful. Wasn't sure what I thought of this American girl who had "married into the British aristocracy" at first, but I have totally fallen in love with her now. I love her humanity and her perseverance.
Please continue talking! It’s amazing, thank you!
I enjoyed the family & house history. I watched everything on your show on the Smithsonian Channel. I hope it comes back with more episodes.
This may be TOTALLY SHALLOW in the midst of everyone’s glorious response to the house….
But YOUR SHOES!
i’ve seen you wear these fabulous red shoes in several episodes. Please tell us the brand and style so we can all get a pair and look like you! 😘
French Provincial Furniture man it a money pit the estate your living in it seems you fix something another thing needs to be addressed plus you have it listed as a Registered historical landmark you which means any repairs or updates has to be approved. I know a few people here in Southern California who houses that are listed as historic home has to get it approved Whether it be repaired or construction tons of red tape and loop hole Obstacles
I LOVE EACH OF ALL THE ROOMS, HISTORY, AND BACK STORY'S! YOU ARE THE BEST TEACHER!
Very interesting to see this Tudor architecture. Coming from Chicago did you ever see the Thorne room miniatures at the Art Institute of Chicago - they have a great Tudor miniature interior?
These grand old houses are ornaments in themselves, the cleaning , especially the dusting would need to be done daily by a dedicated cleaner.. an ornament house where these living spaces are more museum than for living, i guess it would be a much easier task for the cleaner..incidentally the Pendulum ceiling and geometric shapes would have required artisans to carve and plaster.. and only the Royals seem to have used this elegant ornament work, it was perfected in the tudor, period, this is something the Roman elites used as well.. the pendulums must have had some spiritual purpose to them, in my opinion, the grand fire place has a ornament in front what was the purpose of this piece.. thanks for the tour
I love your house!! I love the history of Britain and the monarchy, however Henry VI was a Plantagenet. Henry Tudor was Henry VII who was coronated in 1485. You did get the Tudor date right!! With the coronation of Henry VII, this not only brought an end to the War of the Roses (aka Cousin's War), but also brought us the Tudor Rose which was both white (York rose color) and red (Lancaster rose color). Henry VII's wife was Elizabeth of York, daughter of Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville. Henry VII and Elizabeth of York were Henry VIII's parents. Sorry, I am an American obsessed with the British monarchy :-)
Hearing the history is so wonderful! Love it! I only wish your camera person would have slowed down and allowed us to really take in the ceiling and its details. The round paintings of the other house are so gorgeous and the story is so interesting.
As an English history lover, I enjoy your UA-cam channel! I assume someone, by now, has told you that the first Earl of Sandwich was given his peerage by King Charles II, not King Edward II = )
This is so interesting! I love that you know so much about your own heritage and history. Fantastic!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Are those Tudor Roses on the ceiling as well? Love your videos, very interesting stuff. Thank you for sharing .
If Nugmeg was decent and embraced the Royal family with all honesty...she can do something like Julie's doing or even way more. But she has more selfish plans behind her sleeves.
Wonderful work as always. God bless you and all our aristocrats and royals around the world!
Great job reviewing history. It took me back to my Life in the UK test days:) Beautiful home & lovely tour.
Thank you very much!
i love your enthusiasm!
Henry 6th was house of Lancaster, not actually Tudor.
I can barely keep up with a 2 bedroom apartment. I cannot imagine having charge of such a grand estate. It is gorgeous though and very romantic.
I am so envious of your life. From one American to another, excellent job! I love your channel.
What a stupid idea to tax the families who owned those houses to the point that the building were lost. Stupid, Stupid!
What I love about this house is despite the early antiques, and important art works, the house isnt pretencious . Its comfortably adorned with well worn and well loved pieces. Much more homey than museums. Love it!
If you're excited to watch this episode and can't wait for Sunday, don't forget you can watch it, ad-free, over on my Patreon!
Hi Julie, excuse me for asking, but didn’t the Tudor period begin with King Henry (Tudor) the 7th and not Henry the 6th as stated? I could be wrong, but I thought the Tudor period did not begin until then. Btw, a big hello from the U.S., as we’re from close to your old stomping grounds. I was born in Hammond, In. and brought up there and Valparaiso, In. My husband was brought up in Midlothian, Ill. area. We still have relations in Evanston, Ill. Just want to say I watch your utube videos and you do a very good job of learning, presenting, and helping to preserve your husbands heritage for future generations. Well done! Cheers! xox
Woah woah woah...from THE Cromwell family???
So the Great Chamber was a Tudor man cave, eh?
Fascinating video series. Was the Tudor ceiling painted? I understand that in the era, many were brightly coloured. Grand salon for the Lord= original " man cave"!?🤣 Thank you for this series. My great- grandparents left aristocratic life in the Cotswolds to move to Canada ( family disagreed with my gg marrying a Frenchwoman, a snobbish view in that era. Sounds like the Sandwich family was more open minded). As I trace my family tree, I found your channel- what a treat! One day, I shall come visit you and look forward to the tour. Cheers 💓
Thank you for watching!!!
Great Chambers now a days are called "Man Caves", and they're not nearly as elegant as this! Haha! Absolutely stunning!
That beautiful Tudor ceiling reminds me of the one Henry VIII created for Jane Seymour in Hampton Court( I may not have my history correct, please forgive).....stunning
Do you have any ghosts? Or an episode that talks about ghosts in the house?
No such thing as ghosts ! Show me evidence.
@@joed1162 thanks I can’t show evidence “ but if you look theirs photos of ghosts out there “ I have been in stately homes 🏡 and have seen and felt ghosts! The lady round the corner from me lives in a haunted Tudor house 🏡 she likes the ghosts they are nice 👍🏻 I read ages ago that the queen has seen many ghosts! Try opening your 3 rd eye 👁 theirs videos on line.! And yes I am sane lol If you are closed off and don’t believe you will never see them!
Thanks yes of course they will have tons’
I could be wrong. However, it is my understanding that a big factor in why so many grand homes went into despair is also because of material shortages.
There was so much destruction because of the war. (Many were taken over for military/hospital usage. Therefore altered & damaged). Materials and supplies were not only very expensive but very hard to come by. That they were reserved & rationed for more important government types of structures. Owners of the great houses gave up and just either had them destroyed or abandoned them. Many of the people in the trades were also killed during the war so finding builders and craftsmen was also a huge issue.
Congratulations. Your enthusiasm and passion for your outstanding Castle is really catching.
I adore you and your “talking, talking, talking”. Thank you!
Lovely tour and explanation for this American. Thank you!
Is Mapperton haunted?
Thanks’
Love the architecture and hearing the history of your family. You provide a lovely and intricate description of British aristocracy. Thank you so much!
Julie, I just found your videos. Can you tell me about the green clock on the wall outside
of the great chamber. I think it is French. Thank you for the very interesting history of the house and your family. Loved your colorful dress!
Thank you. So much knowledge about your History. Informative and interesting
Being an American descendent of the British Montagu family, this tour has been a gem for me. Thank you!
Hello Julie, lovely to catch up with you. The spaces in the house and windows are gorgeous, so’s your dress and your interesting talk. I’m an artist originally from England, and am very keen to know more about the paintings. I love slow pans of them in close up, to see the quality of the work and how they are made, and the stories behind the portraits and artists. Thank you very much, your videos have been a wonderful distraction from the pandemic and a recent hurricane we had near Houston. Kind regards, Hazel.
Thank you Hazel for your kind comment. Please keep coming back here every Sunday for more! xx
As an American I had no idea how many people died during the blitz..
One of my ancestral relatives Thomas Abel was executed at the tower of London by King Henry VIII ( a Tudor ). I always love seeing Tudor period items and architecture. Beautiful video.
Fantastic tour! Being a bit of a horology amateur, I was very taken by that amazing clock on the wall behind you when you were standing between the Great Chamber and the stairway.
This episode was so informative and interesting, love the talking, talking, talking 😂
Excellent stuff Julie! But, I have to just say, Tudors were Henry VII, Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I. Henry VI was the last Lancastrian in the War of the Roses, prior to the Tudor era.
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing.
What do these " lozingers" in the Montagu Crest look like up close, please? Looking forward to seeing them. Thank you for such wonderful enthusiasm, Julie, sharing all these great historic facts. You make history very enjoyable!💓 This is Joanne from Chicago. 🤗
"Otium cum dignitate" = "Leisure with dignity." After listening to your explanation, I can see why you would translate it as "after so many shipwrecks, finally a harbour," but I would go with "our leisure is been dignified by the amount of effort we had to put into earning it". The emphasis is, I think, more on the idea of being worthy of people's respect even when, at present, one is not actively involved in great state matters/wars because one has indeed already been in the past and quite successfully so. Hence the idea of "well-deserved leisure." Love your home, your dress and your shoes, BTW!
I'm American but I did not think Henry VI was a Tudor, I think he was a Landcaster. I think Henry VII was the first Tudor king..
The ceiling in the Great Chamber is a "pendant" ceiling, not a "pendulum" ceiling.
A Great Chamber was not the lord's private room. It was a family room, often used for family meals away from the servants in the Great Hall; when there were guests, if they were of sufficiently high status, they would retire after meals in the Great Hall, and go with the family to the Great Chamber; it was also a place where the lord would greet guests whom he wished to impress (Bess of Hardwick even set up a throne-like chair to enhance her appearance of grandeur).
The private chamber for the lord, where few would be allowed, or maybe no one but his personal, most trusted servant, was called a Privy Chamber.
Stunning! It's amazing how much history, etc you've learned and we can see how much you really enjoy it! I love the architecture, pictures and history!
I think you are so delightful. Your an adorable couple as well. I do love the content you cover in all your vlogs.
Just relax when you speak, don't be frazzled and nervous we all love you♡
your beautiful and very talented ... I cant imagine the amount of information you have inside and try to get it out in 30 minutes for youtube.
You are teaching us so many wonderful facts
thank you!
I love your dress! Blue with beautiful floral design. Awesome Tudor era. Ceilings! Wow!
Im new to you channel
I have really enjoyed watching Im an Illinois girl too! My family once lived in Sugar Grove and then to Aurora! Your story is amazing. Thank you
lovely dress and glad I happened upon your posts
I love your dress!
What a tragedy, 1000 of these palaces were destroyed in the 1950s, and the Govt usurping them off the owners during WW2 and allowing the wanton destruction of them.. what happened to all the treasures of these homes
Julie.. Henry VI was not a Tudor King. The first Tudor king was Henry VII.
I remember a few years ago the Viscount of Sandwich, not sure if it was your husbands father.. set up a sandwich making business in London, that delivered fresh made sandwiches to business folk in their city offices..it was very clever, a sort of uber service before uber.. do you know if this business is still operating..
Wonderful video as always. Question about the large tree seen straight out the window in the Tudor Room? What type of tree is it?
It seemed to resemble something we have here in Washington state called a Madrona tree. However, I suspect that that is not the case.
Other you tubers will film these mansions, Castles that are still standing it breaks my heart to see now and the places abandoned. I could not imagine what it would of been like during the World Wars to come back home and see the devastation the to tear down. Oh my goodness! Loving your videos and history of your family etc. Thanks for sharing
Hi Julie. beautiful home...
Thank you!
My little artist heart would love to know who painted the portrait of the 4th Earl. It's lovely. I'm swooning over the fabric!
Great episode i love love those ceilings how special are they ❤
So sad that lots of families lost their homes and England lost such historic buildings we can only be thankful for those that were saved ! Thanks for sharing ❤
As part of the restoration. Are you planning on letting the woodwork in each room and the doors shine thru. The woodgrain in each section is a Deity given beauty. And to cover up such beauty is in many ways blasphemy as in not letting it be seen. Stain and washing gives the chance for the woodgrain to show thru. As well if that hasn't been painted in decades. You would be getting rid of lead based paint off the walls. Plus, it would be nice to see how they looked at the time the house came to be in a historical look.
How did you get the house back?
This is a very amazing ceiling!!!
The Chandelier seems out of place. Obviously, it was added as electricity was added. I am not sure what would have made it better.
So beautiful. I also love your dress. I’m just curious as to whether these bedrooms are used by you your husband and your family or do you let your guests stay there with a visit? Thank you.
How sad. That was out-and-out robbery to tax those ancestral homes away from the rightful owners or force them to sell their most precious works of art
to pay duties and taxes,
During free time I enjoy immersing myself into this home ❤️❤️❤️ thank you 🙏🏼
Thanks Julie! I enjoyed this episode! Nice dress! You look so elegant all dressed up while taking us on this tour.
Thanks for the wonderful tour, loved everything! Janice from Arkansas USA
You are so welcome!
Hi :) how did your husband’s family come to find this new home? Love your series!
Look at that creepy hand on the painting. Boy, those English painters had problems with hands.
Do you recommend any books about the estate homes and during the time of the wars?
There's quite a few out there. I would just look on Amazon. xx
How does the ceiling have the Lis de France ? I got my answer: because of Louise and her love in everything French
Can you tell us more about the coat of arms on the ceiling?
I recently made a comment about that ceiling and seeing some of them painted I didn't realize there were that few I'm sure I seen ceiling sort of like that maybe there is a difference that I'm not getting but it is beautiful
Was all the woodwork original to the home? I didn't realize that they had anything other than stone walls in the 15 and 1600s.
This Man Cave was made for the Lord of the House? Is this where he ate his Sandwich? Fancy!
