The muniment room absolutely should be climate-controlled in order to save the archives. It's possible you could find someone at a university working on an advanced degree in archival studies who would take on an advisory role to help out without costing too much. It scares me to think about the damage even a small controlled fire in the fireplace could cause.
Yes mold can happen over nite. Quite literally.

I agree wholeheartedly with the comments above insuring the documents, books, & photos need to be archived properly --- temperature, humidity etc. I couldn't believe you were talking about decor, paint colour & using a fireplace around your precious treasures. If you are not able to afford a real archivist, perhaps you could find a uni, public school etc & donate all this to protect it.
Just me, but I was more curious about the, perhaps, piss pot.

🙄 And the tapestries should be repaired and the paintings should be cleaned and the stone should be repointed and the pipes should be replaced and the fireplaces should have HEPA filters and everyone should get cotton candy and live in a safety bubble. Seriously, of all the things in an old manor house, random family documents are some of the least precious and least important items there are nowadays. Get an auto feed scanner and call it a day. Frankly, just digitizing the docs quickly without your overfussy archival commandments would yield the most benefits to making the docs accessible to any interested scholars and to the family indefinitely.
Fireplace near any archives is foolish!
I am glad to hear you are renovating the muniment room. As a former archivist, I can tell you it is important to keep archival materials in specific conditions in order to preserve them. Many people think you can just store them any way, but that can lead to items deteriorating if they are not taken care of properly. You need to maintain a specific humidity level and should avoid using the fireplace because you have old items that could catch fire. Temperature fluctuations can be a detriment too. Consult an archivist about your space, but generally temperatures for paper records should be between about 65-72 degrees Fahrenheit. Relative humidity should be about 40-55% and items should be handled with gloves to keep oil from your skin off them. I look forward to seeing how the room turns out.
Interesting details. I note the recommendation for using gloves. Does that apply to paper & books too? I would have bought so- given skin oils and bacteria etc. Bit I have seen people insisting wearing gloves is too dangerous as you lose sensitivity and can more easily tear pages etc.
Duplicating the mask, for purchase in your gift shop, might be a good idea. I could imagine that it would be a quirky, fun item for someone to take home as a momento of their visit to Mapperton. I'd buy one.

I remember watching the Earl Spencer showing their muniment room on some documentary. It had been moved to the stone and concrete cellar because it is fireproof. It was climate controlled. I think you should do that and turn the current room into Julie's office where she can finally get warm sitting in front of the fireplace while researching her thesis.

As someone who has worked a bit on digital archiving and preservation of hundreds of years old manuscripts, I really hope that all of that family material gets digitized if it isn't already. I imagine you're on top of that. I've just inherited my own giant, jumbled cache of old family photos and letters, and haven't had the time to organize it yet, but my goal is to get it all scanned and online for family to access when they want.
It’s amazing what can happen to original documents. Having them digitized is an absolute must. Having had some records of my family thrown in the trash mistakenly. I was thrilled that I had copied them digitally.

Julie, Luke, thank you so much for sharing this video today. I remember seeing Julie for the very first time cycling around London, perhaps in Ladies of London. She stood out then as being the most authentic and genuine, caring about Mapperton. And now today, as I watch this, I have to say well done Julie and Luke. What a journey, building two channels, restoring Mapperton, your Father-in-law sharing stories about the house, mother-in-law talking about the gardens, you and Luke having all these restoration projects going on. I look forward to these, especially during Covid, they got me through the isolation. Thank you so much. Perhaps someday I shall have the chance to visit in person. Till then, will wait for your next video.

Barn storming in US terms referred to the early days of airplanes when dairing pilots would storm a barn by flying really low.
Today I hear that phrase as in taking things in a rush, with daring and joy and great competency !! As in, We certainly barnstormed that boot sale❤

Excited to see what you do with the muniment room. Not sure a fireplace would be a good thing. Not only because of the paper, but also the soot. Definitely find out about the water damage. Even if it has been fixed, a dehumidifier might be something to include in the renovation. Humidity and mold are incredibly damaging to archives. Storing individual items in acid-free paper is very important to preserve the old paper. No glass doors on the bookcases. My sister is a librarian and says the books need to breathe. She had all the doors removed on the built-in bookcases when remodeling her house.
If the glass fronted bookcase were kept, it could house an assortment if non paper treasures.
I so agree with others who indicated the importance of hiring an archival/conservator consultant for this project. The records of the estate and family deserve proper attention. The esthetics of the room should be secondary to creating an appropriate environment for paper.
"Business," yes. "Community," yes. Your role in the Mapperton community reminds me of the royal family's function for the nation and the Commonwealth. Hard work to be good stewards, and a living heart by which the community is unified and edified.
I’d ask the family members who grew up at the original house if they recognize the gilded mask…it is creepily memorable and I sure they can recall if they saw it before.
I do remember Julie taking us into the muniment room and telling us what it was. It may have been over on one of the other channels. How exciting to find Hinchingbrooke items!

Seems to me that Julie was right with her pronunciation if only because the figures on the pot were from the Commedia dell'Arte. Pulcinella or Pierrot and Harlequin, and possibly Il Capitano? Scarecrow huh! If it doesn't find a home at Mapperton it would look great in your Italian house. The numbering makes me suspect it comes from an 'art pottery' somewhere. Worth a couple of hundred quid, and maybe (a lot) more if you could work out the maker. Nice pot anyway.

What a fun episode! I love the seeing more "drone" views of the house that we really didn't see as much of in previous episodes. These really show how big and beautiful the area is! Luke, I am very curious if you father might remember seeing either of the pieces Julie just bought in the house when he was growing up or were they sold off long ago?
OK - as to the Muniments room? Your family archives are about the most 'important' thing in the house. Move them to somewhere safe and dry - the Rothschild's rebuilt a whole farm complex to house their's at Waddesdon. Fires and archives tend not to mix, one log rolling out and they're all gone. And it is a lovely fireplace.
Given this (smallish) room's location between the Dining Room and the Chapel, perhaps it would be better for displaying china, or church vestments and other religious stuff if you have it (I noticed the Crucifix). Just a thought.

Maintain all the records in their original form if possible, but I strongly suggest you have these records electronically scanned to save them from the degrades of time.

Julie, I am so in love with the Boots! I’m going to shop the site and get some. I do live in the US. In the south where it may only get cold every so often but I just love the leather boots.
Concerning the gilt wall mask. Since you have one of a possible pair.......have you considered having a small shelf made to fit the flat surface? That would allow you a surface to display a small light weight object, like a photo or figurine. If you are lucky to find the mate it would be easy to part with the modern addition. Being able to use it as a display stand would make it easier to use anywhere in the house.
Place the gilded-masque above the point of the stone arch over the kitchen stove make make the kitchen sunnier! A protector of the sacred sandwiches!
If the fabric of the curtains are still solid you could save yourselves a lot of money by adding a central band with matching bottom addition. I would suggest a wide stipe or plad to provide some contrast, fullness and the proper length.

I rushed through so much during my doctoral program, trying to balance family, work, studies, and my relationship that I often lost perspective and patience with the humans I loved most. Luke! You may have grown up in the midst of archives, but they are important! They can degrade so quickly, and then the history is GONE! The direct and tangible history is gone, and all you have is varying generations of memory, which gets more and more faulty as time goes by.... Also, in the US, barnstorming (originally) was the process of flying in airplanes over barns, which impressed the farmers and scared the cows to death...... In the UK, what is the etymology of barnstorming (meaning thinking up great ideas)?

Please work with a museum or national library to make sure you preserve all the documents in the Archive. Damp and smoke could ruin them.

Julie, we toured Old Williamsburg, Virginia in 1970. The green on those bookcases reminded me of a color that was prominent in many of the rooms and painted pieces. Ironically the green color was called Williamsburg Blue. Before you paint over the cases, please research the paint and possible significance of the color. There's probably nothing there and it was probably called Dead Molted Green Woodpecker. Even so it would be a shame to obliterate a link to a choice made by Alberta. If you find out the color was Dead Molted Thrush, we can all have a good laugh! Blessings from Kansas.
I have Williamsburg blue in my bathroom and it is definitely blue. Not green at all. It might be my favorite color of paint at the moment.😁

I like the green bookcase, I would paint them all that colour. I think you need more bookcases because archives just keep on growing.
There may be true history just in the paint alone. In Victorian days, an arsenic/copper oxide based paint was really popular until they realized it was a bit deadly. It was a 'special' kind of green and you tend to never forget it.

You can turn that small room into a sacristy in catholic terms. Small room for the vicar to put on his vestments. A small preparation room for getting ready for services in church .plus of course you'd need to buy vestments too.
Should make a mold of the carving and make a plaster cast with it, would be fun to have until you find the original!

Really think you need a large Plan Chest for your renovated room , definitely need to find out where the damp is from, and then have fun organising archive quality storage , wonderful

If it ends up that the companion mask is never recovered, one would think that it would be very easy to make a mold and use it to cast a plaster mask and either spray paint it gold or gold leaf it.

Do you ever "clean" the exterior of the buildings at Mapperton? After seeing the before and after of the swimming pool--and going down a UA-cam rabbit hole of UK building cleaning--now I'm curious to see a before and after of the manor house. I'm sure the age of your buildings factors into those decisions, but I think it would be fascinating to see if you do have it cleaned.
And just for the record, I vote in favor of Julie getting a cozy study.
