Ek moet net kommentaar lewer op die laaste boodskap. 'n Handjievol mense verstaan nie die boodskap agter die lied nie. Die lirieke vertel van twee mense wat geskeur is oor sy besluit om te immigreer...aangebring deur realistiese eksterne faktore in ons land. Hy besluit om te bly. Dis emosionele vrae wat ons almal in die gesig staar. Maar - ons besluit - Bok sin ook, is om te bly en die land te maak werk. But the ANC and the democracy they fought for has become corrupt and lost. Africans have always struggled to run a country democratically - there is just to much tribal systems still in place. A free and open market has lead to more innovation and poverty eradication in our lifetime. That's assuming that what we have now is really a free market. If by self-sufficient you mean the nation whose apartheid government ran the economy into the dirt, who had accumulated so much debt that servicing the interest and paying for basic civil/government services (recall such services were only provided 10% of the population) took up 90% of the governments annual budget, and whose GDP was consistently in decline for over a decade then you obviously don't know what "self-sufficient" means.
"first-world" is a political term, not an economic one. It refers to democratic country that aligned with the West during the Cold War. 2nd world countries aligned with the USSR/Communists. 3rd world countries were not aligned/neutral. South Africa has never been "first-world", it has always been third-world.
If you happen to be South African, then you also happen to an embarrassment to me and my country. I only beg that you aren't also an Afrikaner... But let's face the facts - you probably are. South Africa was in severe dire straits for a long time before ANC took power. During apartheid, the GDP had been in decline for decades. By the time ANC inherited governance, South Africa was using most of its annual budget to service the debt interest, and pay for basic services to whites. The apartheid regime fucked up so badly that they could barely afford to fund the most basic government functions.
The ANC has actually improved the South African economy, unfortunately they have been unable to redistribute wealth, resulting in a black elite, and a small black middle class, along with the politically disenfranchised whites remaining on top, while everyone else remains on the lower rungs of society.
Poverty has always been in the same in South Africa, so has crime. You're speaking from a biased White perspective, and were simply hidden from - or are choosing to ignore - the problems of the townships during apartheid.
Once again, leave it to my Afrikaner kin to not know anything about our countries' history, and embarrass themselves through idiotic comments that are thinly veiled attempts to justify the "successes" of white governance.
