Chad Gray sings and screams with a beastly variety of different distortion flavors. Join me as I dive into to several of Mudvayne's biggest songs, using short studio recording samples.
We'll study Chad's distortion and compression and his approach to his different types of screams. We'll also get to look at his clean singing and how he uses it in particular ways to make his gritty singing even more paint-peeling!

Its funny hearing a polished singer try to hit the grit and growl of a Chad who has been doing it for years. My take is that Chad invented a sound and then added singing to it. You watch his warm ups in the behind the scene stuff and he is working those vocal chords over. I have always appreciated Chad for how he can flow in and out of screaming and singing.

@@gutted_infant Is his technique flawed or is it the fact that it's almost impossible to match a mostly raw demonstration to a studio (most likely) heavily processed record? We're also not considering how different individuals possess different vocal timbres, resonances and whatnot.
Next time be sure to expand on the issues that the content you criticize holds (And I'm not saying that there are no flaws). And lastly, ThugZ? I think you made a typo while searching for 'How to rap like Lil Pump'.

Mudvayne`s first 3 albums especially the first two L.D50 and End Of All Things To Come were just lyrically genius and played with a finessed dark complexity they were top elites in the short lived Numetal era they were of legendary sratus hand down....

I’ve always felt Chad was incredibly talented and since L.D. 50 played a major role in teaching myself how to do these kinds of vocals it gave me an early appreciation and understanding of just how challenging his stuff truly is. I guarantee you that knowing his personality it was just pure passion and aggression that he figured it out through. And that may be why he’s a bit weathered these days. On top of being a heavy smoker. But gott damn did he make his sacrifices count. Truly a unique voice

So interesting tidbit of information about myself that helps my vocals to match some of Chad's vocals. I had my tonsils, adenoids removed and my soft palett trimmed due to sleep apnea. when I force the vocals towards the upper throat area, it automatically pulls down my lower sinuses and creates the false notes. Its a hinderance on most guttural growls but fits Chad's tones perfectly.

Just humbled over some nostalgic tracks, for instrumental records to record voice over by my own. I;ve never thought that it would be so hard for people, who are not familiar with this genre, it must be to figure out how to do amazing shoutings. I just skipped through the video and you think are nailing the comparisons. To slowly let your voice find the right spot. Good work

It's funny to hear you say "I can't quite get this fry tone" at 9:40, because when I started singing, I was actually reaching for screaming and growling like those 2010 emo screamo bands that only does false chords screaming, and now that I've trained clean singing for quite some time, I clearly understand what you mean. I know that I need to practice again, but when I try to reach those high false chords notes, my true vocal chords take the ascendant and it's just not powerful enough, like I hear the crackling of the scream, but it's not like before.

Just finished the vid. I did NOT expect you to cover SO MANY aspects and samples of Chad's singing!
I've seen them live four times, and the best of them was on February 14th 2009. While Chad was finishing "Nothing to Gein", he had collapsed onto his knees for the entire end of the song while saying "soiled... soiled... soiled" and as his energy weakened, he was looking at me, in the front row, the entire time. He had given that song his all. He was wearing the gorilla suit the whole time, too.
I also met them in 2005 right before I joined the military. That was a funny, and incredibly brief, experience.

Chris you gotta check out his Live version...Because his sound is actually comes from a lot of false chord and heavy breathing it's very similar to corey taylor's yell but Chad chooses to go all screeching like a Chain-Saw or something then he's a master in using mixed voice as you told and adding distortion to it where it's like not even a minor break in blending the voice...but in studio versions the producer's vision actually hides the rawness in his voice...but when you'll hear him live you'll notice he's actually a lot more heavier than the studio...ofcourse they're doubling the vocals but still his live sounds a lot heavier than his studio vocals because of the way they're mixed
so I'll say plz do analysis of his vocals with his live vocals

Allow me to nerd out with you in a way I know you'll get, you're the first person I know to talk about the "ball of energy" focus method, I did this years ago before I started learning to sing with binaural meditation where you have a different tone playing in each ear and you hear it as one tone until you learn to focus to one ear or the other, it's a meditative technique that helps you develop focus and direction of attention. Where your mind goes your body will follow, so by focusing mentally on a direction or area your body responds. I use this ball of energy in life if I want to focus on something and tune out distraction.

@@chrisliepe Of course I'd be very happy to help you, as I've listened 12,000 minutes Opeth last year I think I can give you some "must to listen". Demon Of The Fall(2:33-3:02 for growl),Blackwater Park(full of growls one of the fan favorites), Beneath The Mire (6:05-6:20 one of my favorite growl/screams), Ghost Of Perdition(one of their popular songs, there is growls and screams also amazing cleans like 2:34-3:30), Reverie/Harlequin Forest (5:04-5:55 one of his best cleans,8:12-9:04 scream and deep growl),When(6:38-7:38 one of my favorite cleans, there are lots of growls in the song also) The Moor(8:28-9:03 my favorite clean), Moonlapse Vertigo(2:12-2:45, good clean and scream 7:15-8:04 my favorite line and I think some doubles here), Face Of Melinda(full cleans), Serenity Painted Death(7:00-8:05, cleans growls and screams) Opeth changed their style and they don't do growls anymore so if you want to check more cleans you should listen to Heart In Hand and Sorceress. Its so hard to give samples or lines from Opeth songs because their songs are long and there are a lot of amazing stuff on their every single song so you can check whole songs if you dont want to miss anything.

id love to see an analysis of chad's work on LD50 specifically, he produced some of the most ferocious sounds ive ever heard on that album
even though a lot of his vocals on it are far from sustainable (im pretty sure that album did his vocal cords in) id be very interested to see a comprehensive guide on what he did and how he did it

10:04 I am not 100% sure the best way to describe how to do the no tone fry scream either, I have only recently cracked it in the last month and it seems not so reliable on command, your aiming for the associated high note definitely helps, but it seems like you almost need to restrict the airflow even further than normal compression using throat muscles and tongue towards the back of the throat, almost in the position if say you were pretending to choke with a fully wide open mouth, without going full Bart Simpson choke. Definitely need to do more investigation. I think I have heard it described as using the “epiglottis” to restrict airflow.

I get confused about the term "fry scream" because I don't feel like it adequately describes what happens or how it feels. It might be what people would consider a fry scream, but I'm not hearing it that way for some reason.
