  • The Belgian entry in the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin, Ireland.
Reynaert - "Laissez Briller le Soleil"
After Celine Dion's "Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi", this haunting song is my favorite from 1988. A dark and beautiful song with lyrics to match, "Laissez Briller le Soleil" did not achieve much success at the time (its only points coming from the French jury), but it's captivating and unforgettable, standing the test of time. Special mention goes to Joseph Reynaert's incredible backing singers, including Françoise Vidick, who helped Sandra Kim secure the victory for Belgium two years prior.
This video is dedicated to the memory of Joseph Reynaerts, who passed away on November 5th 2020 from COVID-19.

Robbed both in 1988 and in the Eurovision Again voting. By far the most underrated song that year

Genuinely don't understand how or why this didn't come Top 5 in 88. It certainly sounds more of the time then the other entries and was probably a bit too "modern". I love the simplicity of the staging and the pathos of the music. ❤

I have to admit, I didn't think much of this entry for a long time, but it's a grower. Sadly, Eurovision isn't always kind to growers, as reflected in this song's score, but nowadays I really do admire and appreciate it. I'd compare it to "O jardim," another song that deserved way better. My second-favorite of '88 is the significantly more upbeat but also (in its own way) introspective "Ben Adam" from Israel. Great year. Not many songs I'd call bad.

I feel like trapped in a cell with no windows and nothing wanting to hang myself while listening to this depressing melody.

Who were the juries? It seems like they were tone deaf, how can this only get 5 points while that rubbish from Denmark came 3rd😢
