After he had a comfortable lead up until the two last voting countries, who attributed him 3 in total (3 from Portugal, NONE from Yugoslavia), while Celine got 18 (12 from Portugal, 6 from Yugoslavia). Absolute shocker!

@@dvdv8197 To add insult to injury (because much as I love Celine, that song was ridiculous), Yugoslavia won the next year due to sympathy votes as it would be its last year competing as one country and, thereby, beat into second place an equally excellent entry from the UK - 'Why Do I Alwavs Get It Wrong?' by Live Report.

@@kerryclark7233 That is not the truth. The civil war in Yugoslavia started in the summer of 1991, so Riva did not win because of sympathy votes and they competed still as one country in 1990 and 1991. By 1992, their last entry, sung by Extra Nena was only representing the republics of Serbia and Montenegro.

I wonder if the juries knew that "Think twice" and "My heart will go on" and all the other hits of Celine Dion was from after 1988? She must have won because of them.

Not the best day to have a concert in Oslo, but that is how they met. First row, Scott played his show. Many things happened after, many things i will tell. Good times

I hate to go against the grain, especially coming from the UK myself, but back then I indeed thought we had been robbed on the last vote but over the years it has become clear the best song really did win. However for 'GO' fans, take heart in the fact of finishing second! The best two songs actually finished in the top two! Hoorah for that! The international juries by and large got it right!

One of the very best entries of U.K and certainly the best in the ballad style, I love it! Unfortunately, that year there were so many good songs in the contest that one could hardly decide which one should be the winner... My favourites -among other good ones- were the swedish and the spanish songs of that year... Try them and i think you'll agree with me...

can understand that many here see him robbed. i don't... Celine's entry was by far the better composition not to mention her singing. The only odd thing was her style. Go is a decent ballad but it did not have written winner all over. And if there is another song that year I saw competing for victory it was definitely the Swedish one. What a ballad, what a voice. If it wasn't for him being sick that night, he could have won. Tommy robbed himself so to say. But 1988 was an extremely strong year with good songs especially from Norway, Luxemburg, Israel and many more.

I think I am correct in saying that a number of years before 1988, Bruce Forsyth's daughter Julie had been a member of a British group called Guys and Dolls. They had a couple of big hits in the mid-'70s; "There's A Whole Lot of Lovin' Going On" [1975] and "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" [1976].
Oh, and I certainly agree with you that Scott Fitzgerald's rendition of "Go" fully deserved to win the Eurovision Song Contest of 1988. The fact that his song finished in second place was a travesty, in my humble opinion.

Wow....this is the first time I've heard this song since the actual night of the contest. I really liked it at the time and pretty much picked up the words straight away and song bits of it over the years..to be honest I remember it as being more powerful. Yeah it nearly won. Fitzgerald was seriously pissed off. If I remember correctly there is camera footage of him storming off in a huge strop....

I can't say that I blame the dude, to be honest. There is no doubt in my mind - none whatsoever - that his song was the best entry in the Eurovision Song Contest of 1988. It deserved to win.
What is more, if it had done, it would (probably) have gone on to be a ginormous number one hit in the UK - like "Save Your Kisses For Me" (The Brotherhood of Man) in 1976, and "Making Your Mind Up" (Buck's Fizz) in 1981.

@@piaylitalo3663 I don't think a video was made though there might have been. It is surprising no-one has posted it if there is one. His real name is William McPhail and he is believed to be in ill health recently.

Why do we know so little about and have heard so few songs from this great voice? Why Scott's (known) career was so short?

Fun fact. He wrote the Finland 2018 entry to Eurovision.

I couldn't find the reason of his very short career and linited songs on billboards + radio. But, I guess that his very particular, hoarse voice is limiting the genre of songs he could sing. Also, it was good for the 70's. Same for Steven Tyler. And his comback though in 1988 was indeed quite unexpected. But see, it itself was a "one shot" thing ...

He also made a big hit in 77 with Yvonne kill man if I had words
And unfo he only had two hit songs
I agree he could easy have had a career like Johnny Logan and even celine dion but for some reason he stayed behind

At the time he entered Eurovision Scott Fitzgerald was living and working (and paying taxes) in the Netherlands. They were the last country to vote and the points they gave Celine Dion put her in the lead by a single point. They gave him nothing and she went on to win!

Sarah3025 I thought the last country was Yugoslavia, who gave Celine Dion 6 points just to push her 1 point over Scott.
