If you look at the cover it has a tab that is the feeler gauge. Put there for field repairs. Also the condenser could be failing. Keep up all the great information. Thank you.
When you were rotating crank during adjusting point gap, it appeared there was crank end play potentially allowing a crank seal air leak. Required extra fuel to start/run is indicative of a lean mixture condition possibly caused by said air leak. Pressure testing the case (intake & exhaust plugged) would be effective way to test for crank case air leaks. Love your videos. Keep up the positive and contagious good things you do. Regards, Chris
@@BuckinBillyRaySmith I would love to see lyric videos of the songs from your bands. You make amazing music and I always want to sing along but I don’t know the words. Especially when the wood man song plays

You're not kidding... And I'm wimpering with a little broken finger which i pray that will heal as well as Buckin's back. Work is backing up and i gotta "get er done
I am thinking bad coil that opens up from heat. My 2 cents. Guessing the carb needs help too but the main not restarting issue is the coil. Keep up the great work Billy!

mis-diagnosis of a condenser got me off the podium for an FFA small engine competition. PENN State; the overall experience was a life-long learning event so first place is not the only space--haha I lost got over it but I flashed back looking dead at that condenser lol--excellent video! used mac coming up!
Buckin..I had to end up using my air hammer with point but I put thick two way tape on tip. Sucker wouldn’t come off despite penetrating oil, dead blow plastic hammer etc.. Finally came off with the air tool.
Many other things have been covered in the comments that could be the problem like crank seals condenser and so on. I had a saw that gave me fits like this one of yours she would quit and then not start hot or so it appeared. I thought that's what was going on hear what was really going on is the carburetor was drowning the engine out towards the end when she would shut down and the vacuum pulsation to the curb would run low it was then filling the crankcase with a lot of fuel after you let it sit long enough it would fire right back up and do the same thing all over again. Ended up being the button on the diaphragm had worn down so someone bent the metering lever to give it more fuel stroke. Sitting around the diaphragm became hard possibly allowing on micro leak I put a new diaphragm in it + reset the metering lever the problem went away. But not before I adjusted all the spark replacing parts that didn't make a difference. Many times this saw had gone back on the shelf while I worked on something else that was easier to fixthen I would pull it back out and putter with it more becoming more and more puzzled and frustrated lol. Not saying it's your problem with your butt you will find it's something silly like that I'm sure. I normally start with the carb but I was just sure in my head it was ignition and not the fuel because I thought it was getting hot and shutting down but here all along it was a time thing if you let it set the fuel would evaporate out of the warm crankcase by the time it was cold it would start again.

Buckin I've just got sooo many freaking questions for you, as a fairly young man who's worked up through the ranks in the industry "the old school way", I'm always telling my groundmen there is ALWAYS something new to learn or simply a better way or easier way to do the task at hand. My father passed away when I was barely 18 years old so I didn't get the chance to take much knowledge from him out in the field. I'm working on 12 years, and I always say it's the men like you that we all need to take any advice possible from. I dont know you, but I believe in you fully and what you do...from the job to simply how you treat people, thanks again Buckin. Also, please tell me how I can go about purchasing an axe please!! I need something better than my old sledge to bang wedges.
i have one saw like this, in its behavior. a echo tophandle clone, have a echo pretty much same saw, never had any problem with that 1, only saw i bought 2nd hand. still be nice to get the other one to a point where i can trust it to run good for more then an hour. ill give her a proper clean tomorrow and stuff, see if i can get it going good, excellent saw when it works :) anyway very much same scenario
I have a stihl 038 that was doing that and the fuel line was peiced together like I think that one is on yours and once the tank built pressure it would pinch the fuel line shut
Right at the 8:58 mark I’m watching you rock that crank back and forth freely with a rattling noise. I’m concerned that is coming from slack in a rod bearing at one end or the other. If the piston isn’t following the crank exactly it has the same effect as the timing being out.
i have that problem, gap the coil, check for air leaks with brake cleaner, and in the end is the carb! Rebuild it and same problem! Buy another one new and solve the problem completely! all of this in a 372xp!
If a carb kit doesn't fix it I'd say a crank seal is bad unfortunately, I'm not sure if they can still be purchased. Coil might be burnt out too causing a weak spark when warm.
Billy ray. Me being an old school hot rod guy we always used a finger nadir board to file clean points and a matches cover to clean em up.. New set is best though..
I'm moving and it got me thinking....If your pickup work bench was a dump bed you could easily clean it once a week at the landfill. Then you wouldn't have 25 9/16 wrenches and no 1/2"....or is it the other way around?... You got some great close-ups my friend. Great camera.
I had this happen before and found it was the condenser and if you seen when he takes it apart it's got some bulging at the end near The wire so when it starts when it's cold but it does not start when it's hot
More tailgate tech tip talent. Lovebit Buckin that is awesome with the removable head. Hmmmmm do I see a hotrod 1-42 in the future. Thank you buddy. 🌲❤🌲✊🪓
Hope you see this Buckin, but after you sand yer points, open them and give em a short blast of air. Then cut yerself a thin strip of CLEAN paper and pull that thru the closed points. Continue, until the paper comes out clean. Then open, and spritz with air again. ANY grit or oil on them will mess up yer spark.
Yes we call it dressing the points up Farmer style. Oftentimes as a kid we carried a piece of sandpaper in our pocket old gasoline farm tractors had points you had to sand them now and again in the field. Then you pulled a dollar bill out of your pocket ran that through the points help remove the dirt and debris from sanding also it held them points open with your fingernail and blew them outbecause a little tiny piece of sand from that sandpaper we'll float around in there and get in the points every now and then stopping a full discharge of the coil because the sand does not conduct electricity very well however a spark will still jump across the point even with the sand in it partially discharging the coil making you chase your tail.
Yes... Remember doing that with old truck, if they're not totally free of grit they cause a burning from spark flash jumping across tiny grit particles.
Adjustment on points is done while the key way aka lob".on crankshaft is pushing points In .18thousnads closed and no less then .30 thousand open",and another thing why is the crank moving like theirs slop in the crank seals

I was taught to set points with the thickness of a cigarette pack
The whole pack or just the cellophane they used to use? The plastic now is thinner
@@flasher1663 I still have the old style packs the upper flap is what we use
andrew wannamaker The points in the mag on an old JAWA worked great with the cellophane
