- How to fuel system pressure test a #Volvo #Penta 5.7 V8 in a later model Chaparral boat. The #BadGas is a product of storage for many years without flushing the fuel system with clean fuel. The fuel we removed was brown in color, like varnish and has a distinct odor.
We've tested the fuel system by removing both Schrader valve caps on the fuel rail and water separator to find the pump is creating pressure and separator is getting fuel. The main tank has been drained and flushed with fresh fuel and the fuel filter replaced with new and topped off with clean gasoline.
The engine will start with the use of an external fuel such as brake clean, so we know the electronics are working fine. Letting a boat sit for any length of time is a bad thing.
I’m in heaven with all the room around that engine.
It sure is an easy one to work on... unfortunately the Volvo Penta parts are crazy expensive. After a week of trying to get this fuel system fixed, we are having to order a new $1100 part!!!
I'm a strong believer of never letting a boat sit long enough for gas to go sour. A lot of people underestimate how much damage bad fuel can cause as well as just letting a boat sit for extended periods of time. When I see a boat for sale where the seller brags about it being "rarely used low hours" I assume it has been run on sour gas most of its life. To top it off these are the same people that will block a ramp for extended periods of time trying to get it to start. It is around here anyway.
It’s got paint crap in the screen on the high pressure side of fuel pump- Volvo , in their infinite wisdom, painted the inside of where the fuel goes, and the paint comes off with the additives from pump gas, clogging the filter screens of the high-pressure side of the fuel pump. There are some UA-cam videos about this particular problem, please look them up and save yourself a lot of money-

Remove all the paint inside the fuel system. Volvo painted them inside and the ethanol gas is making it flake off. Ruins your pressure pumps and the fuel regulator. Mine works awesome now since I cleaned the system.

My Volvo Penta 4.3 Gxi from 2004 starts directly and runs perfectly at low speed (max 2500 to 3000 rpm)... but when I go 3500 rpm high speed he stops directly (like everything falls out). When I restart he doesn't run anymore. When I unleashed the high pressure fuel pump the fuel flow a few seconds when turning the contact key. After reinstalling the high pressure pump connection and I want to start the motor runs perfect without any problem. So it means there must be falls air or mealy a electrical problem with the fuel pump a high speed... What could it be? Thank you for your advice ;-)
What do u do if u don’t hear the pump going.
Something is plugged. Replace the fuel line and don't forget to change the filter at the tank.
any clue why my volvo penta idle high after running? if I stop and start the engine again goes back to ~900RPM. i have check all the logic items like return spring and wire..
None. Probably an intake leak
You know where I could buy a water pump shaft? Leaking in the same area

Bad seal??
Bad seal on the sea-water pump. When sitting for extended periods they have shown to leak from several different engines.
That's not bad gas, it's the low pressure fuel pump failing.
There is not a Low Pressure Fuel Pump. Only the OEM Volvo pump and it did fail.

You are way off. Paint chips in the pump from ethanol, needs to be replaced.
Possible anti-siphon valve stuck located on top of the tank. Easy fix.
Brake clean into the intake is the worst! Ends up in the oil after it washes the rings and valves.
Allowing gas to drain in the bilge is a very bad practice, and will stink the entire boat up especially if water mixes with it and spreads it around the whole bilge.
Others have made these same comments but worth repeating.

Antisiphon valve!
It’s the Volvo paint in the fuel pump problem. Look it up it a known problem. Volvo issued a bulletin.
Cleaned striped out all the paint chips inside the filter housing to bare metal..factory defect...runs fine now
Whats the best way to clean out the paint from the fuel pump?
