The problem is that it depends if considering all of “horror” or specifically “survival horror”. The latter is somewhat of the default assumption for most gamers. Otherwise, you could argue Devil May Cry 1 or even Metro 2033 deserves to be there
Yes I would like to see what your top 25 scariest game list would look like. Ign seems to just pick the most popular horror games and throw them in any random order just to get the article out there as fast as possible.

Do those even work at IGN because I always thought they were a bunch of head bobbing yes men that gave glowing praise to anything so long as they're paid to do so or so long as they didn't find what they're "reviewing" too hurtful towards their delicate little feelings.

@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Here's the thing, I'm not pushed on VR either. And I played both games vanilla and loved them but playing them on vr made them almost unbearably scary.

@@leonbarry5403 And that's cool, but I can't stand VR. I'm also not a big fan of the games in first person. I'd be more inclined to replay both of them if they had a third person mode like Village had as I'm more immersed when it's in third person.
I forget the details as to where I was in the story bc it’s been a while but I took a screenshot when I was playing RE7. I was in this little crawl space where the wall was open only at the bottom. Turning around after grabbing the item just in time to see Eveline’s legs. It was horrifying lol
I'd love to see you do your own scariest games list! The differing opinions on horror games do fascinate me! Like how you're not a massive fan of SOMA, whereas I found that experience genuinely scary and by the end of it existentially exhausting and it filled me with dread in the best way! And I think the list is flawed in a big way as you suggest. They've picked iconic over the literal fear factor. Maybe not the most popular choice but #1 for me is 'From the Darkness'. That gave me whiplash so many times during its 2-3 hour playthrough, it constantly caught me off-guard with scares that were subverting expectations as to where you'd encounter them. (And shoutout to Mortuary Assistant too, that game fucked me up!)
Nah you're absolutely right about Clock Tower being inspired by Argento films, it was never officially confirmed until the interview with the director of Clock Tower on Clock Tower Rewind, he specifically mentions Phenomena and Suspiria as influences
Damn, I almost stop watching your video as soon as you said you don't like SOMA. The script is a masterpiece. The voice acting is a masterpiece. The ending is phenomenal. Yes, the gameplay is simple, mediocre even, but the story is original and one of the best there is in the horror genre. ¿What's not to like about SOMA? I would like to hear it.
I would definitely put Alan Wake 2 in my top 10. I'd need to really sit and think about precisely where though. In no particular order, my top 10 (1 game per franchise) would be: - Alan Wake 2 - Alien: Isolation - Resident Evil 2 - Silent Hill 2 - The Mortuary Assistant - Phasmophobia - Outlast - The Suffering - Dead Space - Prey
Having p.t., five nights at Freddy’s, left 4 dead 2, siren, amnesia instead of resident evil 1 remake, silent hill 3 and 4 etc. is an insult. I’m gunna have to disagree with your manhunt opinion.
their criteria is pretty wishy washy. i would put RE4 in a best or most iconic horror game list, but not among the scariest. it's too wide of a net for too vast of a genre.
RE4 is 100% an action game with horror sprinkled on top. When I think of horror I think of being nearly helpless and very limited supplies. Not a gigachad plowing through the game. RE7 is 100% terrifying in VR.
I do feel like people look at games like re4 through a lens of getting s+ on professional, meanwhile most people that played it would struggle on easier difficulties, which definitely makes it scarier.
The first 4 SH games, all 9 mainline RE games, the two TLoU games, the two Alan Wake games, the two Evil Within games, Days Gone, Signalis, Alien Isolation, all 3 Dead Space games would be my list.
I already got the platinum in Silent Hill 2 remake, and I can say it would probably be highest on my list. No recency bias needed, it's got the good stuff.
When thinking about scare, people need to account for first time rather than repeat played. Something that might scared you at age 15 or 20 might not be the same anymore around 30 or 40.
If you wanna talk bad list, I can't remember the name of the website since its been a while but it was ranking Gamecube horror games. Scooby Doo Night of a 100 Frights was above Resident Evil 2 and 3, I was laughing.
They say hard mode is the preferred experience when you’re picking the difficulty for AI but man if you’ve gone through Hard, Nightmare is truly the best experience, for me at least
My TOP10: 1. Silent Hill 2 2. Resident Evil Remake 3. Silent Hill 3 4. Project Zero 2 5. Silent Hill 6. Resident Evil 3 7. Resident Evil 2 8. Eternal Darkness 9. Alan Wake 2 10. Dino Crisis Horror genre was at its peak between 1995 to 2005. Haven't been the same since, but we're seeing a bit of a reveal with Alan Wake 2 and Silent Hill 2 Remake.
Siren absolutely deserves top 25 status in my book. Siren, to me, had the closest feeling to a silent hill game that any other horror game had gotten. I do understand why someone would dislike it, but from the story alone, the game has to be in top 10 horror game franchises by horror fans

He's the reviewer who would give all cods 10s back in the day.
Soma is legitimately one of the best horror stories of all time. That makes me sad to hear you say that
condemned barely gets mentioned and im glad that its mentioned here 😅 one of my favorite 360 era games for sure. i agree with subnautica. i dont know how to swim and the ocean scares the hell out of me 💀
I think they fucked up because they made this part "best horror games" and part "most iconic horror games" list, and it ends up not being satisfying as either as it omits some very obvious picks from both.
You can not enjoy soma but saying it dosent deserve to be on this list is just ignorant wtf dude its influence on games of the time a the psychological horror of the time? its very well put together story and philisophical elements i can understand not being a fan but to say it dosent desreve to be top 20 is just an almost factually bad take
It looks like a generic video games fan wrote it!
Do those even work at IGN because I always thought they were a bunch of head bobbing yes men that gave glowing praise to anything so long as they're paid to do so or so long as they didn't find what they're "reviewing" too hurtful towards their delicate little feelings.
God I'm so sick of P.T. I can't stand it anymore
This list is complete dog water. No SH 1 or 3, no RE1Remake, no RE7, no Cry of Fear, no F.E.A.R., no Eternal Darkness, no fucking Amnesia: The Bunker?!
Throw the whole list out
Subnautica is scarier then most of those.
Can you smell what the bawk is cookin
In defense of Manhunt that game has great atmosphere and great audio design which I find to be really eerie and spooky.
luigi's mansion shoutout at the end 👻
Oh it's no debate for sure. Resi 7 VR is the most terrifying game ever made. Followed at a distance by Alien isolation VR.
If VR is your thing, sure. I hate VR.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Here's the thing, I'm not pushed on VR either. And I played both games vanilla and loved them but playing them on vr made them almost unbearably scary.
I really can’t grasp saying RE7 is the scariest game ever and VR isn’t exclusive to that game and its a separate thing that influences it not apart of the game by default
@@chandlerburseI agree, resident evil 7 is nowhere near the scariest game ever made vr or not.
It's a who payed us the most for reviews of your horror game list.
"I digress"
I had to take a long break halfway through re7 cause it was so scary for me lol
I would definitely put Alan Wake 2 in my top 10. I'd need to really sit and think about precisely where though.
In no particular order, my top 10 (1 game per franchise) would be:
- Alan Wake 2
- Alien: Isolation
- Resident Evil 2
- Silent Hill 2
- The Mortuary Assistant
- Phasmophobia
- Outlast
- The Suffering
- Dead Space
- Prey
SOMA is a masterpiece! Wtf?!
Having p.t., five nights at Freddy’s, left 4 dead 2, siren, amnesia instead of resident evil 1 remake, silent hill 3 and 4 etc. is an insult. I’m gunna have to disagree with your manhunt opinion.
All the garbage of this list aside, putting FNAF and Outlast above RESIDENT EVIL 1 IS A FREAKING JOKE!!
their criteria is pretty wishy washy. i would put RE4 in a best or most iconic horror game list, but not among the scariest. it's too wide of a net for too vast of a genre.
ign doesnt play games.
RE4 is 100% an action game with horror sprinkled on top. When I think of horror I think of being nearly helpless and very limited supplies. Not a gigachad plowing through the game. RE7 is 100% terrifying in VR.
Yeah...I would not include RE4 on any list of scary games. That game is not scary. One of the BIG reasons I like RE4 is because it's NOT scary.
No Cry of Fear or Darkwood tells me all I need to know.
Aka. Recency bias
Silent Hill 2 being my favorite horror games, I think Silent hill 1 and 3 are more scary by FAR.
Watched it live now I need bawks top 25 Forsure
wow, no Fatal Frame on that list? FF2 would be my top no. 1 horror game. FF4 would be somewhere in my top 10.
They say hard mode is the preferred experience when you’re picking the difficulty for AI but man if you’ve gone through Hard, Nightmare is truly the best experience, for me at least
I’m not surprised considering it’s IGN lol
My TOP10:
1. Silent Hill 2
2. Resident Evil Remake
3. Silent Hill 3
4. Project Zero 2
5. Silent Hill
6. Resident Evil 3
7. Resident Evil 2
8. Eternal Darkness
9. Alan Wake 2
10. Dino Crisis
Horror genre was at its peak between 1995 to 2005.
