    I don't expect the average fan to be aware of the years long ownership drama in Balto. Here’s my attempt at a "brief" explanation with background:
    Peter Angelos, a world acclaimed Workers Rights attorney (guy who sues employers on behalf of employees), buys the Orioles in the early 90s.
    He’s 94 y/o, in 2017 it was revealed he had full blown dementia, and never set up a succession plan for Orioles ownership. So his wife kinda took over, but then she succumbed to same thing very shortly thereafter (both are still alive, somehow)
    There are two sons who are fighting over the team (John and Louis)...they sued each other last year. They are both considered, immature, petulant, and untrustworthy. One son tricked the mentally incapacitated mom into signing something giving him the team w/o the others son’s knowledge.
    Peter Angelos was often chastised by the fanbase for making bad ownership “decisions”, i.e. always signing the wrong guy, firing someone too early, etc. But he was somewhat respected.
    The sons have lost all respect from the fanbase. The brother who is taking over as owner (John) is probably the more competent one, but he’s way shadier. He ridicules and lies to the local media. The State of Md has made multiple comments that it is the Orioles who are dragging their feet in executing on a lease extension for Camden Yards.
    Every time John opens his mouth in public, he ends up making a fool of himself and the media just roasts him. So this Kevin Brown drama supports every preconceived notion we have of the Angelos family and I imagine Orioles nation is enjoying the national media catching on.

    catcher's interference stuff has to be framing related. trying to grab the ball earlier and move it, and that's probably also related to why more catchers are getting hit by big backswings that have been around forever

    The funny thing about baltimore is that no one would have ever noticed the "negative remarks" had they not made a stink about it. Now by suspending Kevin Brown they've created the absolute opposite of what they wanted in the first place, a swarm of media attention stemming from the fact that they sucked for the past few years. Just an incredible way to eat your own shit when doing nothing about it would have brought no attention at all.

    It really is disgraceful and disgusting what happened to Kevin Brown. I don’t think I can be angry enough about it. It reflects poorly on our entire fanbase and team and coaching staff, and all because the son of the owner is a petty, small-minded man, just like his father, who takes personal offense to any mention of the team losing because it reflects poorly on him AS IT SHOULD and his fragile ego can’t handle that.

Heard a lot of takes as a White Sox fan in recent years (days lol), and he sums it up so well: regardless of what has actually happened, clearly no one's on the same page within the organization. Huge bummer, and getting harder to root for them.

I really hope Kevin comes back as he is a very beloved person in our community and is a big part of what makes this team so fun. The Hedges one highlighted another advantage of reach out for the ball. If someone's running, you get the ball earlier to throw him out. Also super gnarly cause imagine if the bat didn't just hit his glove, but his actual hand. He'd potentially be out for the rest of the season. Pitcher hand injuries soon to be on the rise?

  • @matrixphijr
    @matrixphijr 11 місяців тому +1

    My first thought on the interferences was that it would mostly be with runner(s) on base, because the new rules might lead catchers to try to get any little advantage to throwing out a potential base stealer. I don’t know if that’s true or not.

    Pitch composition and location matters for catcher's interference, but a big part of the story here is *bat paths*. There's been a major emphasis in the past few years about really policing the earlier parts of a swing - getting the barrel lower before passing through the plane of the plate. This has knock on consequences for rates of catcher's interference, as bats spend more time in the zone behind the plate, creating more opportunities for interference.

    “So he’s just trying to catch it before it sinks?”
    Pretty much, as far as I understand the Giants’ reasons. They’ve got a lot of sinker/ground-ball pitchers, so part of their pitch-framing philosophy is to catch the ball as close as possible to make it appear closer to the zone. It’s just another way to “steal” strikes with framing, and it suits the makeup of the Giants pitching staff.
    Also, four of those seven interference plays were committed by Blake Sabol in April. He’s a Rule 5 guy who’s still learning the position, so that’s skewed the total a bit.
    Regardless, it seems the increase in catcher’s interference is a result of teams trying to maximize pitch framing and stealing as many low-ball strikes as possible. I wonder if there’s a correlation between sinker usage and interference calls

    • @Scotter4536
      @Scotter4536 11 місяців тому

It wasn't even negative, because the overall point is we know the O's are friggin' awesome now and will be for 6 years. The past is the past. It almost seems like Kevin Brown could sue the O's for this decision. It's so unfair. Should we never show Mateo's offensive stats because they are offensive? What are we doing? It's baseball. Everything is stats in baseball.

      If you’ve been a longtime Os fan, you know about the toxicity of the Angelos family: how Peter ran Jon Miller out of town for not being ‘rah-rah’ about some bad teams in the 90s, or how they fired the PA announcer right before a game a few years ago for Tweeting about how happy he was to be back with fans in the stadium (because, you know, Covid). The Angelos family doesn’t take kindly to commentary that they believe makes them look ‘cheap’ even though… they are. Commenting on the lack of past success is something the Angeloses take personally and believe reflects poorly on them as owners, which is ironic considering they are pitiful owners, even though the commentary has nothing to do with that. To paraphrase Michael Kay, it really is the mindset of a small, insignificant man.

    Regarding the Orioles ownership: 'Your honor we object. This makes us look like cheap shark Lawyers!' The Judge:'Well you are Lawyers. Objection overruled.' Interesting stat on the catcher interference. Quite a leap in numbers. Seems like a product of the times. Batters learning new techniques that move them closer to the edge of their batter zone. Catchers pushing the edges of the strike zone with the glove. Pitchers getting finer and finer at the edges of the strike zone. More collisions and more calls for the umpires trying to get it right. Is this one for AI? The catcher was 65% in the neutral zone versus the batter 55% in the neutral zone. Batter awarded interference. Can an up make this determination as accurately?

    IM a Giants fan and I've noticed the Giants catchers commit catcher's interference a lot. Just from looking at the graphic you showed at 18:45 I see Junis and Rogers having 2 each and they both play for the Giants. Thought it was just a Blake Sabol thing but maybe it is the new catching stance that is causing young catchers to commit catcher's interference.

      Sabol has slightly more than half the innings behind the plate as Bailey, but has committed 4 of the 7 interference calls. I think part of the issue for him is that he's 6'4" combined with his inexperience at the position.

    Catchers are setting up too close to the hitters in an attempt to frame pitches low in the strike zone. They are taught to reach out and catch the low pitch, instead of receiving it.

    Kershaw takes a nap before every start. Teammates have joked about how everyone tries to stay quiet in the clubhouse during his nap.

    Giants broadcast has talked about the catchers interference over the last few years. Posey never had many and then when Bart and now Bailey/Sabol have had many over the years. It’s because the Giants want the catchers now to be very aggressive with pitch framing and stealing strikes for the pitchers and accept that we may have some catchers interference.

    I think Shohei has 5 catcher interference as a batter, also believe Ryan Teperas catcher interferences came in the same inning.

    Reinsdorf needs to sell. WS are just stuck in mediocrity, they had one good run 20 years ago.

    Born and raised in Chicago and been a Sox fan a long. This stuff has been talked about for a long time. Jerry is the problem and his little buddy Kenny Williams have allowed this culture for 20 years. If the Sox don’t have one amazing year in 05. This is franchise is a joke, which they are

    It's interesting about catchers interference, sad about Kevin Brown, and hilarious about the White Sox.

    I'm primarily a St. Louis fan, but I watch Orioles games, especially over the past couple years. The team rules, their announcers are great, the fanbase is happy and loud at Camden. So much positivity and the owner is acting like a toddler. This Angelos guy was born into wealth and has no connection with reality. What a joke.

    What's even worse, is that he was echoing the managers sentiment as well.

    I remember Jimmy Rollins coming into the Sox in like 2017 and saying they had a terrible clubhouse. Abreu said stuff prior to this season about how the Astros clubhouse is better than the Sox clubhouse. Sox always write it off as sour grapes.
    Even goes back to 2006 Frank Thomas talked crap about the White Sox after he left and Kenny Williams had the famous clapback "He better stay out of White Sox business.' Jerry Reinsdorf led organizations have been dysfunctional for decades.

    Jose Abreu wasn't happy with the team or the way he was treated after spending like 9 years there...Lance Lynn confirmed the "slap" from Grandal to Anderson...Anderson whole Jackie Robinson debacle...the sad thing for Sox fans is that until that ownership & front office is cleaned out, nothing is going to change.
