I'm not sure if Jimmy necessarily has the math experience to break down these charts. A lot of them the trend line was close enough to average that not much of a conclusion could be drawn from it. Something like bat speed and K% works because as you said guys who swing fast are less in control of their bat generally. But sprint speed and BB% there's almost no correlation there and it showed in the data. The r2 value at the top of the chart shows how much correlation there is in the data. The bigger the number, the more that can be drawn from it. The smaller the number, the less correlated 2 events are.

      @Tekkkky Місяць тому +13

For the non-math people out there... the r2 at the top basically represents a correlation with 0.00 being absolutely no correlation and 1.00 being perfect correlation. The fact that the majority are

I’ve been studying statistics for years and I feel like we shouldn’t downplay the importance of what Jimmy is doing. You first identify the logical relationships in the data, and only then you move to statistical analysis. I could argue that the R^2 doesn’t say anything because there’s missing variables to be considered in the analysis, making the t-statistic inconsistent (the error term is correlated with x). But that’s not what we’re trying to do here, we have a guy who has a lot of knowledge of baseball and is using visual representations to illustrate things that he knows from experience, which adds a lot of value, regardless of whether it’s significant statistically. I’ve learned a lot about baseball by watching these, more than I would be able to grasp if I were to work on the data on my own.
Don’t forget that correlation is not the same as causality, something that MLB teams seem to forget. So we shouldn’t obsess with finding significant correlations.

I really liked Jimmy’s charts and actually did a little research myself. I was curious what correlation bat speed and swords (ugly swings) had, and as I expected, the faster you swing the bat the more swords you have. However there were some interesting outliers. Yordan Alvarez and O’Neil Cruz both had average bat speeds near 80 mph, which is amongst the highest and combined the 2 of them only have 3 swords on the season.
Want to do more research on Baseball Savant and see if a pitchers average Velo has the same correlation to swords, but don’t know how to access the pitchers stats.

It’s a measure of “goodness of fit”, or how reliable the line is at explaining the trend seen with the points. An R squared of 1.00 would mean the line intersects every point on the graph (most reliable). An R squared of 0.01 would mean the trend doesn’t fit well at all

I think I’m ok with moving the All-Star game to Sunday, and add in a skills competition (like NHL).. First half ends on say Wednesday. Skills competition is Friday night, Futures game Saturday Afternoon, Derby Saturday Night, ASG Sunday Night. MLB gets an additional revenue, more stars would more than likely want to be part of the weekend festivities if not in Derby or Game and then season could start back up on Tuesday. Would also give players an extra day off (Thursday - Tuesday) where as now they have 4 days off

Reason for the whole AL/NL thing. The MLB has been around since 1876, but from 1876 to 1901 only the National League existed (NL is sometimes referred to as the "Senior Circuit", as it is the older of the two leagues.) AL/NL denotes MLB history since the American league was formed in 1901.

I really enjoyed this years derby
Few things I want to change
    1. 2 years is too frequent I'd say every 3 years
    2. Using charity to pressure players just doesn't seem right
    3. Any player that have been injured before the all star break shouldn't be allegeable - and Ohtani is rehabbing like c'mon let the man rest
    4. Give players with the most HRs the choice from the descending order until 8 players are chosen, preferably even with lefties and righties
    5. the whole point of the event is watching players hit dingers and fans catching the ball, like why the fuck do you want to lessen the experience of it? just because you get bored in middle?? then don't go
    6. I'd say to make everything fair use batting machines instead of personal throwers ( Alonzo had some terrible pitches to hit)

  • @OhJustSomeRandomGuy
    @OhJustSomeRandomGuy Місяць тому +2

Here's the thing about the Derby for me, the rationale you're picking for the Derby and the people you are selecting are kind of working at odds with each other.
Guys hit home runs in games because they are picking up on mistakes, they've been sitting on the bench for a while, and they are fresh when they go up to the plate. Aaron Judge and Shohei could probably destroy the field if you gave them 20 pitches and top score wins. But they don't wanna swing hard for upwards of 100 swings in 30 minutes. I'm not even sure Aaron Judge on swing 100 is going to be better than a replacement player after swing 100.

Big fan of your suggestion. Love the 3 righties and 3 lefties split. Splitting the pot between all players is solid too. Maybe the winner gets their winnings matched by the MLB to their charity of choice so that there’s still something to aim for.
Also, another caveat could be to have at least 1 rookie if they are in the top 20-30 HR leaders or if they have a high SLG. 🤷‍♂️

    - Only one player per team represented. In your current plans, we would have too many Braves.
    - I like also like the idea of NL vs AL, so I think the matchups should be made as such. If you have a field of 6, 3 come from NL (all from different teams) and they face 3 from AL (also all from different teams)

    Home Run Derby idea
    8 competitors
First round 10 outs 15 HR max. Player advances with 15 HR and if both batters hit 15 HR it’s based on fewer outs. If outs are same 5 pitches. 1 for 1 like a penalty shoot out.
Second round 20 HR max. 8 outs. Same rules as above to advance.
Final Each batter gets 20 pitches. 10 for the first, 10 for the second, 5 for the first, and 5 for the second. If a tie, alternating pitches like penalties again.

Going back to what i said about eliminating HR Derby as a single thing. If you do Skills then you can have who hits the Longest homerun and who has the most consecutive homeruns as part of the skills. Then you can have throwing accuracy, throwing distance, running and maybe like a relay. That would be so much better to watch then this HR Derby snooze fest.

I like your proposal for the derby, but maybe add some fan voted contestants. Even if the internet pulls a joke, it would be entertaining.

Would have loved to see Yordan and Ohtani over Pete and Bohm.

But understand why Ohtani wouldn't compete in it.

He said Judge and Shohei. Which makes sense knowing how intense and nationalist inspired the Japanese view baseball

Go back to to ten outs(out = not a home run).
Bring back Chris Berman on the play-by-play
Top 4 homerun leaders in each league MUST participate(unless on the INJURED LIST). Prevent teams/players/players agents saying no

Solid system Jimbo. I couldn’t have been less excited for the HRD’s selections. I was annoyed at how much I didn’t care at all.

You can’t force players to participate. That’s asinine to think that will or should ever be a thing.

Rangers had a ton of all stars last year. Phillies have a ton this year. What’s the correlation btwn allstars and WS appearances?

How to fix the derby. Run it back next year and see if its worse because this year was fan fucking tastic

Another caveat should be that you can't be under 6 feet or less than 200 lbs. I'm tired of seeing guys like Mookie, Bregman, and J-Ram hitting wall scrapers.
