  • Philippé 'Soul' Wynne
Born as Phil Walker on April 3 1941 in Detroit, Michigan, and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Wynne began his musical career as a gospel singer. He soon switched to R&B and attained some measure of success, singing with Bootsy Collins’s Pacemakers in 1968 and with James Brown’s J.B.’s shortly thereafter. Wynne then spent time in Germany as the lead singer of the Afro Kings, a band from Liberia, before he replaced his cousin, G. C. Cameron, as one of the lead vocalists for The Spinners. He sang with the group until 1977, during which they achieved several successful albums and singles.
Wynne then launched a solo career with Alan Thicke as his manager. His first album Starting All Over was released on the Cotillion label in 1977 but was not promoted. His fortunes turned upwards again when he joined George Clinton’s Parliament-Funkadelic in 1979. He performed with them on several recordings, and was a featured vocalist on the Funkadelic single “(Not Just) Knee Deep” (a #1 hit on the Billboard R&B chart). While associated with Parliament-Funkadelic, Wynne also appeared on the Bootsy Collins album Sweat Band. Wynne released the solo album Wynne Jammin’ in 1980, and made a guest appearance on the song “Something Inside My Head” by Gene Dunlap, and in the song “Whip It” by the Treacherous Three. Wynne’s final album was the self-titled Philippé Wynne, released by Sugar Hill Records in 1984.
On July 13, 1984, while performing at Ivey’s nightclub in Oakland, California, Wynne suffered a heart attack and died the following morning.

Mr. Wynne was "That Dude" when he sang with the Spinners. He had the uncanny storytelling ability whereas; when he sang the song it would take the listener on an adventurous vocal ride. When he re-joined his P-Funk brethren, it was a win win for all the P-Funkateers (Not Just Knee Deep); and the rest is musical history. R.I.P. to a true legend of the vocals.

Incredible ad-lib abilities. He surely regretted leaving The Spinners, in hindsight. They were the R&B group of the 70's, 2nd only to the J5 I believe...in top 10 songs, but theirs was "grown- folk" music, and I loved it, especially the melodic songs written/produced by Thom Bell & Linda Creed. And he was only 43 when he died....while performing. Thanks to UA-cam, we get to experience who he really was....all these years later.

Very capable singer and entertainer that got too big for his britches, and once they picked up smooth, 4-octane Johnny Edwards, his era and style had played out, so there was definitely no going back no way, no how!

@@DorianGilmer this is such a bullshit take.
Teddy Pendergrass left the Bluenotes and became a bigger draw and legend solo. Felipe Wynn took a chance at life, the man laid down "Knee Deep" for fukk sakes.
Just coz a great man fails at an endeavour doesn't make him any less great.
What do you know what it's like to be a genius singer?.. Let alone judge him for wanting to go solo. Felipe Wynn was a superstar, he just need a big push from a major label.
It didn't help that the late 70s, early 80s funk had been phased out.
Also in this documentaty Felipe is not here to speak on himself.
I've never listened to anything the "Spinners" did after Felipe Wynn left.
But here they are running their mouths on a dead man

@@blaquenguni9249 what would you say replaced the funk by time 1984 came in? Gap band, sos band type music? then an evolution into the new jack swing? You sound very educated about what you're talking about and i'd be curious to know your take on how music evolved from the early 70s to 1984. Temptations-type groups with great arrangements and soulful slow music was the early 70s, then as the mid 70s came i'd say uptempo came into play which helped funk push its way into the disco era..early 80s to me is hard to define. Lots of synths, MTV became popular, and it was the age of the popstar like madonna i would assume.

I always will love the Spinners, Parliament & Funkadelic. Spinners, Philippe', George C., Boosie all of you gave good music. We need good music of the 60's & 70's & early 80's back in our lives. The music told stories that we lived. Though it's Hip Hip in the mix now, but doesn't tell the good clean stories of love & life like the 60's & 70's.

He was excellent with The Spinners, but destiny had him leave. My God, "Knee Deep" WAS great because HE sand on this song. That song is MEDICINE.

There is some footage in the beginning of his band mate trying to get him off stage. I couldn’t tell if it was part of the act. Later in the video they explained he wanted to change the name of the spinners and that gave some context. He was very talented but his own ego got the best of him sometimes.
