- The Temptations are an American vocal group that formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1960. They were known for their success in the 60s and 70s at Motown Records. The group's repertoire has included, during its five-decade career, R&B, doo-wop, funk, disco and soul music. Known for their recognizable choreography, distinct harmonies, and flashy onstage suits, the Temptations have been said to be as influential to soul as The Beatles are to pop and rock. Having sold tens of millions of albums, The Temptations are one of the most successful groups in music history. As of 2010, the Temptations continue to perform and record for Universal Records with its one living original member, Otis Williams, still in its lineup.
The Temptations helped put Motown Records on the map in 1964, with their song "The Way You Do The Things You Do" rising to the top of the charts. They were the first Motown act to earn a Grammy Award. Three classic Temptations songs, "My Girl", "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)", and "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone", are among The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.

I had the privilege of attending one of the 25th Anniversary concerts back in the early 1980's, which featured all of the members of the Temptations over the years, including David Ruffin and Eddie Kendrick. A truly magical experience.
Grew up listening to the Temptations during the 60's. My all time favorite group.

To all those dissing this lineup, as you age....go sit yourself down and rock until you take your last breath. That's what you insist these great men do. I am grateful they kept the music going, entertaining me into my later years. They sounded wonderful. It was their time. Live your memories but no need to put down anybody. Nothing, not even you, stays the same. No one is bigger than the group!!!

I agree that the Temptations and The Four Tops were very classy. Oh, what great entertainers!!!. I lived through this era. No one can match the music of the 50' s and 60' s.

I'd rather listen to Dennis with laryngitis on the crappiest PA ever than most of the so-called 'talent' today,how standards have fallen but I have to say that the Temps and their ilk set the bar incredibly high !!

Wish I could've caught them in concert. But I am glad to see that they have had millions of views on UA-cam. Good music will never die.
They still tour, albeit with only one original member. I'm going to see them this March because it's the only chance I'll ever have to glimpse even a fraction of this great band in action.
@@razzledcroaker3678 I actually got to see them in concert last year after I had written my initial response. Yes, there is one original member who I believe is 84 and still amazing. They really put on a great show. You'll have fun! I cover "To Proud to Beg." My own upcoming single "Integration Education" to be release early next year is a tribute to the soul groups of the '60s. Most of my songs are more acoustic, though.

Don't know where you live, but I grew up across the border from Detroit . These songs were the soundtrack of our lives as well. I can remember music playing everywhere during the summer - pouring out of the shops, cars, and homes, people dancing in the streets, what a time it was we were so lucky. Thanks Detroit, for giving the world some of the best music that ever was!!!!!

I envy you greatly sir! As a 21 year old, I can get incredibly sad knowing that Otis is the only original Temp still standing and that I will probably never see the current Temps performing live. Especially during these harsh times. I must've watched this concert about 20 times now, and it never gets boring.

We who have lived during this period in time who were privleged to or blessed to witness their greatness either in person or through their recordings must acknowledge that all especially the original members were some of the greatest song stylests in every vocal range that they would use. Growing up in Detroit back then was music paradise. Every single week another group was throwing out hit after hit, and it became expected and adored. Every generation gets theirs, music constantly evolves, but I honestly believe this love was the very best.

Otis Williams you are glue that held the genius fabric assembling together the greatest show the world has ever experienced. When the Temps needed a voice to speak to the human heart you stepped to the microphone and laid the rap down. I hope these words have been a blessing.

Sure, the original Temps are matchless, and nobody could argue that, but these three, minus Paul, Eddie and David, are holding their own. They still can bring it!
Temptation were one of my mentors, I know every song they recorded and Lou Rawls recommended that I audition for them when David Ruffin left. One of the Best Vocal Groups Of All Time In My Time.
Wow!!!!! What an incredible experience!!!! I was 16 when they skyrocketed to stardom. I remember every song 🎵 and every lyric. Pop music today cannot compare.

Old Man River shows off their awesome accapella harmonies. Most of the tunes in this concert take me right back to 1970-71. I was a an east coast guy hitting the west coast for the first time, thanks to uncle sam. lol Temptations on the radio, cold coors in hand, and cruising pacific coast highway 1. Who needs a time machine, when we have music like this to take us there.....thanx for the post and memories.

I grew up knowing when The Elgins first started 1960 BKA The Temptations still watching and listen in 2019 no other has come close to the performance of these talent men. Thanks onemediamusic for sharing
When I hear the term GROUP then this is who my mind immediately gravitates to! Untouchable in any category in my opinion....

This Temptations lineup was awesomely talented, i.e., Otis Williams, Dennis Edwards, Ron Tyson, and the late Melvin Franklin and Richard Street. Give some props to Otis Williams for having survived all the up's and down's of maintaining the stellar reputation of The Temptations all these decades since their genesis as The Distants/Primes and Elgins. You may not love Otis for some of the things he had to do to keep the Temptations at the top of their game, but he gets my respect & admiration to the max!

The Temps were awesome, love the dual with the Four Tops.
They all had to go home after entertaining so many. I can honestly say I came during the times as a teenager and Dennis came aboard in 1968 I believe with Psychadelic Shack.. They didn’t miss a beat and just think Otis is 80 years old and still putting it down and performing.. He’s held up the battleship all these years.. This concert just throws me back in my seat especially ‘love on my mind.’ That lady in the white dress was really enjoying the music.. Now just think most of the ones we knew are gone.. Rest In Peace you set a mark so high it would tough to grabbed that brass ring.. LB January 2, 2022 Sunday

There was no week link! Every voice, every move, every emotion personified by the whole. It was just human feelings. No mention of race. It was that we are all alike. We all experience the same feelings. They brought everyone together. Boy, could we use them today!

They open the door to greatness in R&B music. A group gave us so much in real music that reach the heart of the matter. In love music, just a jam and made us all dance to the groove of the Temptations. A SURE WINNER IN MUSIC ONE OF THE BEST. A TRUE CLASS ACT OF GREAT ENTERTAINMENT.
Can never come back. Sixties and seventies could never be duplicated, ever. That's why new groups have to incorporate this music. Motown!

Amazing performances, not enough adjectives to describe how their faboulous and praise their individual talent! I was very young, however, my brother introduced me to ALL The Mowtown Greats!
I was into the Beatles, The Jackson Five, Beach Boys.

I was in high school in Detroit (dePorres is in the house) when Dennis Edwards joined the Temps. None of us were excited about this and we didn't think anyone could replace David Ruffin. Little did we know. Dennis brought the church with him and we all fell in love with his singing. Love this. Thanks for posting.
