I am not lucky to plant it here as our weather is not good as yours😞. So cold and we have so much rain in here. Struggling to keep them alive during long winter time, luckily few survived but they lose their beauty and regrowth in spring. Succulent and cactus crazy here 🙃. Thanks for sharing
wonderful video! i have a question.... if i cut a section of my crested trunk, will that trunk grow more leaves? i have a crested graptopetalum paraguayense bernalense bu8t it has three "trunks" and i would like to propagate one but im wondering if i leave part of the trunk if it will continue to grow or will it mess up the others? most of us small timers cherish our cresteds so the thought of losing one to a stupid mistake is terrifying. lol im not kidding lol. i was dying but enthralled watching thi9s video
Hi James . Can you tell me what would cause a sudden soft , dark spot in the middle side of a mature , woody crest ? I have a mature imported crested Fred Ives that only gets water when the lower leaves feel less firm and the soil is dry ( every 4-6 weeks ). It’s grown indoors under grow lights in very rocky soil mix . The spot is to the far right , in the middle of the fan ( not high up or low ). So the rot isn’t coming from the roots . And I never get the leaves wet . So it isn’t crown rot . I keep the dead leaves plucked . It was perfect for the last year . Then this sudden soft spot forming. This has happened to other mature crests I’ve had . When I’ve tried cutting these spots out , they just travel to the rest of the fan . So I’m afraid to cut the spot out . Thank you 😊. I’m asking because you’re the only person who has gotten so involved with speaking about crests . I’m wondering if this happens with age . I’m guessing the plant is about 4-6 years old . 8” wide and 8” tall . The spot is 1” or so . On the very edge of the fan .
If you were to save the flat stem and roots of these , would new growth happen on that flat stem the way a normal stem will grow out new babies when beheaded ? Great video. Thank you 😊

1part rubbing alcohol, 1part 409 cleaner, 2or3parts water and use a soft toothbrush or crafting pipe cleaners to scrub off any bugs. Or just buy a good systemic insecticide!
I noticed your soil comes away from the roots so easily . Does it have peat in it ? Usually, peat hardens on the roots in my experience and it’s very difficult to remove . Thank you again 😊
You can also propagate from leaf cuttings, HOWEVER No guarantee they will turn out as crests, we have a video on this in progress, often only a very small proportion will be crests.

I find that, in order to best avoid ANY rotting of cuttings, cacti. young plants or “specialty” succulents-no matter if they're leaf propagates or stem cuttings, or even just mature specimens-dried sphagnum moss is ideal. It can be simply ripped up into smaller chunks by hand, wrapped around the succulent, or simply lay the cuttings or leaves on top of the dry moss. Then I may even go further and chop the moss with scissors first, into finer, porous particles. Moss is great for avoiding rot because when the time comes to water, or mist your cuttings, it soaks the water up just enough, and yet it evaporates at just the right speed to avoid rot. It’s perfectly porous and just the right amount of organic matter to stimulate succulent roots. As a matter of fact, and I am not alone in thinking this, many succulents, Peperomias, and other plants can spend their entire lives in pure sphagnum moss. They’ll have perfect drainage, aeration and moisture control, with just the right amount of nitrogen breaking down. If evaporating is a concern, I also recommend a top-layer of gravel, decomposed granite, Akadama, or even just pumice, for plants potted in sphagnum… either way, topdressing for looks is still possible even with moss as a substrate ;-)
Crests are a mutation that happen naturally on some plants, so you can't make one happen unless it wants to. However, you can propagate crests from crests.....
It pains me when a crested gets too heavy like that. I love them so much I try to keep them as long as possible but if u don't divide it sometimes it will just rot or fall apart and become a mess.

Yes, absolutely, it is only from the stem cuttings that you can confidently get crests. Leaf cuttings can work, however the rate of crests to normal plants is much lower

No, the crests are a cristate or monstrose form, and occur naturally, best described as a genetic defect in the apical meristem.
