- How to install a garbage disposal and connect the P-trap and drain.
Here I install a Moen EX75c disposal, which is more powerful and quieter than the average Insinkerator installed by most contractors on new sinks. This unit also comes with a preinstalled power cord so the only other thing needed is a 1.5" P-Trap kit found at Home Depot or Lowes.
P-Trap kits with only two washers and nuts usually only give you one slip washer. The other washer is a reducer. Normally, your sewer drain stub-out will have a washer and nut on it. Here mine didn't so I needed three nuts and two slip washers.
FYI: if installing a dishwasher drain line to the disposal you need to remove the disposal drain cap, seen here in blue. Some disposals have a black cap that you push into the disposal and then you pull it out from the top.
Here I'm using a switched outlet. If you don't have one, here is another option:

FYI, if you're installing a dishwasher remove the disposal drain plug before connecting the dishwasher drain line, seen here in blue. Some have a black cap that you push in. See How to Install a Dishwasher here ua-cam.com/video/nY4hseX56Mw/v-deo.html.
You have to do that, when you have dishwasher
This guy is absolutely incredible. Very polite, easy talking very knowledgeable walks right through it. He’s so comfortable. It’s got to be the best illustration list. I’ve seen in a long time. I know this is a simple job, He brings comfort to the job which is a total maximum plus. It was my absolute pleasure watching this man work. I hope he’s the owner of that company.
My old garbage disposal stared leaking and this video saved my Sunday. Quick trip to Home Depot for a new unit, installed it, and now good to go. Thank You
Cool!
I just replaced my garbage disposal myself and saved $200.00.Thanks for the help!
yw
Thanks man! I’ve never replaced a garbage disposal before. You made it easy and as a result of saving money on labor I got a better model
Thank you. I started as helping someone drive and I got bored and started getting out the van and now the boss is paying me an extra $7 dollars per hour after 6 months. This a great trade and you learn from many; pros & cons.
Great video! You are spot on with explanations and made install from two drains to one drain a piece of cake! Thanks!
Swapped out my disposal quickly and without a single snag - thanks to you!
Nice!
A lot of other tutorials have me second guessing if I need other things to install. This video made me realize I have everything I need and don't need to buy more pipe
You are awesome. Very experienced and articulate. Thank you very much for this video and for the one on how to install the dish washer!
Good job. I will do mine. I got moen same as yours.
Thank you ! Best tutorial I've seen on UA-cam for garbage disposals.
This video was very helpful for when I changed out my garbage disposal recently. Thank you!
I have never thought to use an oscillating tool to cu that type of pipe. Great idea!
This was super helpful, especially since I didn't have a garbage disposal to start with, and almost all the other tutorials I have found assume you already have piping in place!
Same here😅 I'm glad I'm starting from scratch, so it was nice to get some piping tips
NICE JOB. YOUVE DONE THAT A MANY TIMES. THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR DETAILED QUICK PROFFESIONALISM.
Crystal clear instructions, thank you very much, very helpfull video.
The BEST and EASIEST how-to video
Thank you so much! Great added information, especially why the dip in the PVC pipe is needed to catch water to stop sewer gas from coming in! Other videos could have easily left that out but will be super beneficial for my home as I do this project! And even the little note about why there is no slip washer when the two pbcs come together bc it has that built in one! Really appreciate it! I’m subscribing and will be using your videos first any time I’m doing anything!
Thanks and welcome the channel. 🙂
Great video thank you. I am getting ready to install one and your video has gave me the confidence
Exactly the install I was looking for!
Nice work quick and straight to the point!!! And easy to follow!!! Thank you sir! You answered my question perfectly!!!!
Thank you for this video. Your camera angles made it so much easier to understand. I was able to figure out what was wrong and how to fix it easily.
That's great, glad to help. 😃
@@toolrevTHANK YOU. I am
Great video short and sweetened to the point great job
Nice video man, super informative, thumbs up and subbed, especially hearing that awesome Celtic music at the ending, I’m a fellow Irish American so that was icing on the cake!
Thanks and welcome to the channel. ☘
Brilliant video mate!!! Thankx!
Love the simplicity of this video, you made it look easy, so my project went quickly, thanks
Thank you for posting this, it helped install my own.
Glad it helped
Really great informational video thank you!!
Clean. Well done.
You're good man! Perfect installation!
Great video and job!
Just a trick of the trade I found easy to make cuts for soft plastic pipe like these for the p-traps is using your CPVC ratcheting cutters. It makes clean cuts with no burred ends.
Just what I was looking for
Thanks. Saved my sink
Excellent video, thank you so much!
yw
Nice camera angle toward the end there 👏
Thank you, this was helpful
Great video. Thanks for the help
👊
I’m actually installing that exact garbage disposal in my basement haha my sink looks similar to that too, it’s an under mount but I too mounted it😏 no one can stop me!
💪
FANTASTIC VIDEO!!!
Great video.
Great vid after leak realized i should have used more putty
Nice job
You da man. Well put. Many thanks.
👊
All I have to say is that all companies that don’t include the little plastic tool to install the flange are cruel and unusual. Just installed mine without the tool and now I need a beer or four
Good stuff thank you
You are awesome
Nice if you have a big wide open cabinet with no obstacles.
Thank you! Just saved me $450!
Thanks 👍
Awesome work. Thanks for sharing with us. I just have a question. Why, after installing the garbage disposal, the dishwasher doesn't get water. Thank you
not sure, the disposal takes in dishwasher drain water but doesn't supply water to the dishwasher
Nice video! Thanks! I found some divergence on the sink drain diameter. Should it be 3.5", 4.5" or insinkerator will fit both?
yes it will fit
Fantastic
Very helpful! What's the power tool you used at 4:32 to cut/trim the pipe? I installed mine today and ended up using a mini hacksaw.
The Makita XMT04 multi-tool.
you should be using a proper tool made by ridgid, sold online or homedepot, is to cut tubular p material like the one being used, is a small light tool, not a power tool, it gives you a clean straight cut, beveled without burs, and risk free. the tool is like 15 bucks but it works on 1.25 or 1.5" tubular p drain, not pvc.
Thank you
Thanks a ton bro 💪💪💪
🍻 and 🙏 4 the 💰! 🍀
Great explanation. I always blow on the slip washer also. Ha ha
Great video, glad to know the p-trap pipes can be configured at an angle like that. Going to replace a dual bowl with a nicer single sink. What is your opinion on reusing a existing disposal? Current one is a 3 year old Badger 900-2.
I'd reuse it.
@@toolrev Thanks
If you don't mind me asking, do you still need a traditional 'breather' PVC pipe running off of the plumbing?
If you're talking about an air gap to prevent backflow some places require it, others do not. You at least want to loop up your dishwasher hose as high as possible.
Thanks!
Glad to help. Thank you. 🍻
remember to knock out your plug in disposal
How long should you let the putty set before putting on the part under the sink that will hold the disposal?
No need to wait, put it together asap.
Would this Garbage disposal installation work the same on a ceramic farmhouse sink?
Should be the same but haven’t installed one of those sinks yet myself.
Thank you!
You bet!
Should clamp or staple the electrical cord to the wall for the future. If that thing ever starts to leak, which they do quite frequently, your cable is going to be exposed to the water. Yeah it's got an insulator but a small clamp will take 2 extra minutes and cost 37 cents.
I just realized that pipe come with trap are smaller than normal PVC pipe. Is it ok to use in kitchen plumbing?
You gotta check your local code.
I winced watching you hold that length of pipe while you cut it. You got mighty close to the fingers on your left hand. Lol Anyway thanks for sharing your no how with us
Do you only apply the plumbers putty underneath the sink flange? Is that enough to prevent leaks or can I put some around the space between the sink and the lower flange like 3:45? Also, are you suppose to let the putty dry before use?
Just under the upper flange and you don’t want to let it dry out.
I bought a house that's new, my disposal started to lease after 1 year.
I think application is important.
What is the sink flange that goes inside the sink comes with a rubber gasket do I still have to use putty ?
Not sure, I’d have to refer to the instructions.
What do you do with that excess putty that squeezed out into the sink?
Pull up the excess around top of drain with your fingers and wipe with a rag or paper towel.
Is it possible to install one with the drain being 24 inches heigh?? Thank you
Should fit, check the height of the disposal in the specs.
This is better than being screamed at by my dad while I'm crying bc I don't know how to fix it. Thank you.
What plumber putty should i use if my kitchen sink is made of silgranit ? Thanks
Never installed one but my guess would be silicone as putty can stain granite. I always call the manufacturer if I'm unsure.
Hi
i think the time 2:53 a little snap ring tool is verry good tool
where is to buy it?
It comes with certain Moen disposals.
you do also need to install an outlet under the sink and add a switch above the sink and connect it to the outlet under the sink.
Good note but if you're replacing one it's already been done
@@mychajlodoss502 ik
Where did you get that snap tool ring please? I can't seem to find it anywhere!
Comes with Moen disposals.
@@toolrev Thank you!
So that's assuming you have the circuit ran with power ran to one of the outlets to a switch, I assume?
yes
What if I also have a dishwasher that I need to plumb to it? How should I do that thanks.
Search easy dishwasher install on my channel page.
I don't understand the two GFCIs under the sink.
and its my struggling to finish this for the last 6months.. ordering parts for drain, not getting other parts in store and haveing problems in every step :D
great vid anyway!
Ty
Yw
Helps with the fear of the unknown. What is the tool called to cut the pvc tubing?
oscillating multi tool or just grab a 2" ratcheting PVC cutter from Home Depot for $30
How do you hold the garbage disposal up when you are attaching it?
I lift it up by the lower ring mount, twist it on a little and it holds itself up until you twist it all the way.
Where did you get the snap ring tool ?
Comes with the disposal.
what are the hooks supposed to go onto
If I understand correctly from another video the hooks don't go on to anything there to put a screwdriver in to help use leverage to tighten it
Thank you! Reminder for everyone, if you have a dishwasher remember to knock out the hole for the drain. Ask me how I found out lol
😅 I been there
Good thing I found ur comment lol 😅
😂😂😂😂 well thanks for the PSA because I'd not thought of that at all..oops
just a question, granted it has a pre installed power cord, was the plug in on a switch or no... because what if you dont have a switch, i take it you just have to install one or ? sorry if it is a dumb question i am just taking this as its a plug in and go thing.
Correct, it's a switched outlet. You can also look up garbage disposal switch at Home Depot, etc.
ok was just wondering cause i didnt see it covered in video but thank you for responding... ill look into the addition of a switch because im not sure i have one set up for it
@@toolrev
Easiest video so far
Thank you for this helpful video! *Do you happen to know the brand/name of those countertops and where to find? Really like them.
I''ll check my records and get back to you with the name. It's granite from a Daltile yard in California.
Sorry, I couldn't find the receipt but it's not Biscotti. I have it somewhere and will post it here when I find it.
@@toolrev I really appreciate it, thank you!
Adonis white.
1 question why use plumers putty and not silicone?
Here putty was called by the manufacturer.
I installed the new one with old hardware and it didn’t have a p-trap setup. It was straight across (installed this way by the builders). Is this a major issue?
This is my second garbage disposal install in 13 years and this time I didn’t replace the drain etc as I installed the same manufacturer disposal and wanted an easy swap. I’m trying to learn the maintenance of my home and I learn from UA-cam University.
You have a trap somewhere along the line. If not you'd smell sewer coming out of the sink. If no smell then all's well. :)
If I don’t plan to install a dishwasher, can I leave the knockout in place?
Yes
@@toolrev Thanks bud!
Is it a problem is drain goes through floor instead of out the wall?
Not necessarily. If the drain is too long between the sink and the P-trap it won't trap water and you'll smell sewer gas. There's a code for how long it can be. If you don't smell sewer you're probably good.
How do you un jam this model ?
Maybe tap it loose with a hammer and screwdriver.
Did you install the lower flange off camera?
No
@@toolrev Ok, thanks. I need to watch it again, got a bit confused when you had a second one, not sure what happened there. Thanks for making this video.
I did that and my disposal won't turn on. IDK if its connecting electrically.
If you plugged it into an outlet under the sink, and the outlet is working, check to see if the disposal has a reset button. Do a process of elimination investigation and let us know how it turns out.
Where is the switch for the garbage disposal?
The disposal is plugged into a switch controlled outlet. The switch is above the counter next to the sink.
Where to get snap ring tool?
It comes with certain, maybe all, Kholer disposals.
@@toolrev , Thanks for your prompt reply.
What if there are leaks?
Then everything is not lined up or tightened correctly.
What if there isn’t an outlet under the sink?
You'll need power so either install a switched outlet or run an extension cord and air switch, link in description. I recommend a switched outlet.
