Roger, I’m 24 and my girl needed some work done on her sink, little to say I came in and got the job done thanks to your video. Now I’m reaping many benefits this evening when I get to bed. You’re a legend
@@RogerWakefieldhey brother, how does food pass through and out of a P-trap..? It just rises upwards with the water... lol, that seems like the most difficult process. Can you share another video with see-through piping, and demonstrate how the garbage disposal or food in general act once passing through a P-trap? Thanks!
Oh snap so that’s what that tool is for, I’m an apprentice hotel engineer and when they gave me my tool cart it had that basin wrench on it but nobody explained to me what it’s used for. The past couple months I’ve been tightening up those nuts on the under side the sink with an adjustable wrench and no wonder it was taking me forever. Well now I can save so much time on my work orders when the faucets come loose! Thanks Roger!
Dear sir, I am an electrician here in Texas and I want to say thank you for your video. The tips you shared helped as I replaced our 40 year old sink w a brand new sink, faucet and disposal. Keep sharing your knowledge and helping others. 🎉
Master plumber for 29 years in Florida , I usually use a flanged tail piece ran horizontally off the disposal, I give it a slight amount of fall coming back to my tee to aide the food particles make it to the trap & prevent stoppages. Today a customer had pulled a 2 compartment sink 8” deep, & replaced it with an under mount 10” deep single compartment sink and they had a disposal. I had to use the 90 in that particular application & almost didn’t have enough room to get everything connected because of the sanitary tee inside the wall was roughed in unusually high for some reason. Anyways I got it done without opening the wall & customer was pleased at the end of the day so that’s all that really matters to me.
I am a maintenance mechanic, not a plumber. I do residential and some commercial electrical/plumbing/appliance repair. I had a sink basket that was kicking my ass today. I could not get it to seal. After watching your video I realize I was not spreading the putty around the flange correctly. I knew you could use too much putty and it would interfere with the seal so I was only wraping it in the corner of the flange, not out toward the edges. In my defence, I am still learning and I have only had to do one or two stainer baskets. Thanks for your help, you made me a better plumber!
Thank you for the excellent tutorial; with your help I was able to easily strip all of the bad fixtures, piping, and whatnot out of the kitchen sink and replace all with new kit on my first try. I didn't read the full instructions on dishwasher usage. 3x dishwasher backed up into itself. Until i realized, the disposal has a punchout for the dishwasher. The tube can be connected without punching that hole (which is what i did). Before 3 loads, then looked at instructions for the punch out.. *face palm* (i have many FP moments.. 😂)

Thank you for the lesson! This worked great for me. I was able to get rid of the jumbled previous homeowner special. Only difficulty I had was my drain pipe was mounted much higher than yours so I had to modify the downspout from the disposal and the p trap.
Your the man Roger, ive watched lots of your videos. I swear that we were trained by the same plumber coming up. Ive started using a product called skin tight its blue on all my disposals, pop-ups, tub/shower drains etc. The good thing about this product is you can get it things loose if you ever have to take it apart again unlike pure silcone. I still use putty under the faucet. I have found the putty will break down and wash out over time. Food for though brother. Doesnt matter how long you have been plumbing you never stop learning, keep the video's coming..
Hey Roger great channel you have!! I pipe mine almost exactly the same! Couple things I do a little bit differently I install the faucet and water lines before the garbage disposal so I don't have to fight getting behind the piping after the Garbage disposal is in place! other one is I get the garbage disposal mounted but I don't tighten the locking ring down until I get my drain assembly where I want it! And last but not least I fill each sink bowl at least halfway or better with water and let it go and check for any leaks! Again great channel you have here and your editing is great!! Keep up the good work in Texas! I'm over here in Missouri! Have a great summer!
Hey buddy I don't care what anyone else said I think ur video was excellent and it helped me immensely! The only problem I had was the previous "plumber" ( I use this word lightly when referring to mine lol ) had the dishwasher drain hose connected to the pipe coming down from the other side of the sink from ware the disposal was and when I removed all the PVC pipes they were packed solid with crud and was a helluva mess to clean but ur video was excellently done and I couldn't of done it without ur help so I just wanted to thank u and lyk that I appreciated ur video. My girl was thrilled with me and her new disposal and the price I charged her lmao. Thanks again!
I always preferred using the tailpiece going across to the regular basket side. I seen in the thumbnail you had it a way that I thought was strange. I’m glad I watched this video. From now on anytime this option is possible based on the positioning of the stub out, I will do this.
Gotta be honest mate I'm from the UK and waste disposals are not that common here! Changing out my worktops and double sink, (which has a disposal unit already), and this is the most simple and sensible explanation I've seen....many thanks! Some of the plumbing kits here look like they could vent radioactive water from a nuclear power plant......
I do pretty much the same as you with the total installation. I use the tool that comes with the disp to tighten it. I also buy the disp that have the cord attached already. Save time and money. I also use a air gap when there’s a dw. Great channel Roger! With no “d”
WOW, U make this look so easy but for someone like Me that's never done plumbing before it's insane trying to figure it out cause my main ABS pipe is coming up from the floor middle ways & disposal too, I am the home owner and just didn't have the time to hire someone to come out and do it, I remodeled my kitchen with New countertop and New sink which is 9in deeper than the original one & before I start this I am gonna put everything on the back side cause that's the way it should be so thanks for saying it needs to be in the back instead of the front side and I was going to go straight out from the disposal but after watching your video I am gonna go back & put it going down, thank you so much for making this video I really appreciate it, you just made my Job easier
When mounting the disposal that Allen wrench (you used to explain how to unjam the disposal) works great to tighten it in place as well. I keep a couple in my toolbag and even one in my work vehicle for those disposal calls.
Good video, I prefer the horizontal disposal waste. It's not often food will get stuck there. Besides it's not hard to take apart.I would add that with the p trap on the other side, snaking the drain is easier.
I work property maintenance and do general repairs. My first time installing a garbage disposal I forgot to break the seal on the dishwasher drain, had to run back later that day so the customers dishwasher would work. Wont forget again lol
I’m here today, funny enough, because the handyman I hired who charged $400 to install my garbage disposable (yes, disposal and tools were supplied to him), didn’t align the “insinkerator” straight and it drove me batshite! I had to learn to fix that or I’d have to move. Thanks for this great info!
In CO we use a straight waste arm on the disposal and have the tee connected to the drain side with the p trap right below it. This seems more complicated and less practical in tight or deep sink situations
Roger, I lost both parents 1 month from each other this year due to COVID complications. I saved this video to a playlist so when I replace the kitchen faucet and/or sink I have the proper knowledge of what to do. Lost dad on 9/16/2021 and mom 10/16/2021.

I see where your way of piping gives a little more ability to line up with the trap adapter also . I use a catch pan and tubular cutter made by Rigid to cut my lines ,, leaves them bur free,, and makes straight cuts ,, after all not a lot of space in the hubs I want as much contact as possible I also now only use the blue rubber washers ,, I’ve seen too many plastic ones break or bind then become loose again a few days later
my tip would be to add the old garbage disposal (assuming you have the old one) into the box of the new garage disposal as weight onto the topside of the sink to keep the strainer for moving. The snap ring is not that easy to put in when working with an actual kitchen cabinet - your not going to have that reach around per this video. The weight will keep the strainer from popping up prematurely. #2 tip the garbage disposal jam buster wrench to unclog the GB is actually used to lock the flange nut 16:01 fits in perfectly no need for channel locks or screw driver. #3 the plastic slip nut washers are junk wouldn't not recommend utilize rubber slip nut washers- good brand is oatey
I like to connect my supply lines to the faucet, then install faucet. I really like the tool that you can slide up on the supply lines (is hollow or slotted out)....it will tighten the nuts that hold the faucet to the sink, it replaces the basin wrench, and it is long enough it is below the bowls to tighten/loosen the large nuts (rigid makes the tool I have).
On the basket strainer side, always fill the sink with hot water, and retighten that basket strainer, if you give a one year warranty, it will leak before that warranty is up, I guarantee it. Big D's plumbing Medford Oregon
Quik tip, best to leave lok nut on the romex connector and use it as a jam nut, especially if you have to install the cord after the plumber has installed the disposal. That way you can stop the clamping screws in a direction where they are easy to access. Example, thread the body of the clamp only enough to have a good start, then using a screwdriver tap on lok nut lugs to tighten while holding clamping screws in the position where you want them.😎
I love when that happens, i get to tell the owners that the cabinet needs to be ripped out and that i have to re plumb the drain in the wall and get paid more money
@@jacobkindsvatter4055 Yeah I wish more people would plumb kitchen sink drains at 14” O.F.F., but also when it’s to high, hell yes I get excited to. MORE WORK!
Master plumber since 99, plumbing since 91 I put the tee on the basket strainer side. See how hard water is blown out of a running disposal? Like a pump sort of... yeah, I'm not worried about any solids in that horizontal. Any solids that sticky are gonna be a problem in the next horizontal or the base of a stack or a dang short turn fitting downstream. Tee under the strainer leaves more space for the customers junk. Is there ever stuff under the sink when you do a service call? Always right? And when drains, especially slip joint drain piping with long pieces ( lots of leverage ) are where all that junk goes... pieces get pushed around more, joints get loosened. I like to leave more room for their junk and less pipe in shorter pieces that are more difficult to loosen due to occassionally being knocked around by the detergent bottles. Not criticizing your style, these are just MY observations.
I just did this at my house two separate connections going into the wall for each drain . I did not put plumbers putty around the faucet though.. should I take it out and re do that ? Just used the plastic piece and some clear caulk around the top of it.
I actually put the disposal in the box if I’m alone to put the locking ring on the saddle! But if I have a helper or someone is available I’ll have them hold the strainer down ..
Great video. My garbage disposal is leaking and I don’t really use it. I’m thinking just take it out and make it look like the right side of the sink. Besides the white pipes what pieces will I need the basket strainer and such does that come in one piece let’s say at Lowe’s.
2 1andahalf inch trap adapters, 1 1andahalf inch 90, 11andahalf inch SanitaryTee(TY) 1 1andahalf inch P-Trap w/union. this is the fitting shopping list youll need to replumb a 2 compartment sink. (Does not include connecting to the drain stubout coming from the wall or the basket strainer and its tailpiece)
😂 There's an oring on that drain. Took me watching THIS video to realize that. I was wondering WHY it wouldn't disconnect, and HOW the original was put on.. , somethings gotta give, lol.. the ORING.. jesus. *face palm* Once i removed oring.. BAM comes right apart. THank you!! Lesson WELL receieved!! I played w drain before knew about oring for about 15min, no progress. Once watched this, oring was off within 3 seconds. Wow.
Hey Roger, I just came across this video as I'm looking to DIY install a new disposal (current double sink does not have one). On other videos, I'm seeing the disposal often being installed on the smaller (read: shorter depth) side, but we use that side with a drying rack over top for baby bottles; we rarely to never pour water down that drain. Is the installation on that side simply to save space under/around the disposal, or is there another reason for doing so? Thanks! -Phil
Sweet Roger good job and she’ll float for sure. BUT 😂 ida put my tailpiece extension in the disposal then trap it on the other side. thanks for sharing
I always learn from your videos! Thanks for this one. I am needing to make room for a trash can tray with a double sink. If I use a 45° adapter will that impede drainage from the strainer side? Also if such a part doesn’t exist should I purchase 2 45° fittings and rock on? Thanks again. I owe you for the countless times you helped this amateur! Lol
I'm watching this very helpful video because I want a disposal in my 1959 home and the sink and pipe set up is exactly the same as shown here except one thing, the dishwasher is already installed and the hose goes to the straight pipe going down on the right. I wonder if it is ok to leave it and not connect to the disposal or if not, can the connection on the side be capped or should that section be replaced?
Nice video but you forgot about installing the fiber washer after installing the black rubber washer on the sink basket. Also, it is important to mention to make sure the wires of the disposal are properly matched and connected to the whip cord for electrical reasons polarity reasons. I believe the 2020 NEC (National Electrical Code) also requires that the disposal is connected to a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet for safety reasons since you are dealing with water and electricity.
perfect roger my only advice i dont use a saw to cut the pvc home depot sells a milwaukee tubing cutter specifically for this application it also bevels the pipe😀
Roger, the one thing I could never understand is the fiber, or as I call them, cardboard washer on the basket strainer. I've always used them, but they go on after the rubber washer. What the heck is the use of having them. Again, I always put them on, just don't understand, what good are they? The rubber washer alone is going to seal. It's not like the fiber washer is rigid enough to keep the rubber washer flat or anything.
This video provided a lot of useful information that I will use on my sink replacement. The one variance I have from the video is my sink is going from two drains to one drain. The single drain will have a garbage disposer and a dishwasher hooked to it. The single drain is on the right side of the sink. The outlet pipe in the wall is on the left side. The person who installed the sink has the bridge going straight out the disposer on the right to the basket drain on the left that has the P trap leading through the wall. Based on this video I need to have the pipe from the disposer angle down at 90 degrees first, then the p trap and from the p trap a bridge to the outlet on the left side. Am I correct? Did I even make sense? Sorry I am new to plumbing.
Roger I love your videos. I have a question. I’m trying to replace the drain pipes under a kitchen sink and having a hard time getting everything to line up. Il try to describe the piping. So I put a new basket strainer and then the new tailpiece that connects to the basket strainer, then the ptrap, the. The elbow that comes off of the back end of the ptrap. Then there is a 45 elbow to a straight piece of pipe then to a tailpiece that goes into the drain in the wall but that last tail piece is also at a 45. My problem is where that first 45 elbow comes in trying to get those two pipes to alight at a correct angle. This was how it was piped before and I’m just replacing it as it was leaking. Hope there’s some trick to knowing how long each piece needs to be so the angles align correctly? I remember in high school math class our teacher told us there’s a math formula for figure out plumbing angles.
Thank you so much for helping me install a sink, disposal with dishwasher connection. I was so confused about the washers and how to connect a non threaded pipe to a threaded pipe. And why doesn't anything explain the 2 types of washers? I wish you'd explained them. My washer just slid around on my pipe. Come to find out, my Handyman Store sold me an old piping kit, the washers were dried out, they were hard with no "rubberiness". Could you dumb down just a wee bit for those of us who now find themselves financially tight and now need to make our own repairs? Thank you.
In some places your not allowed to hook the dishwasher directly to the disposal so check 1st before you bust out the knockout.A dishwasher tailpiece is whats used in stead and has a protusion on it to connect your dishwasher to commonly used on the vertical but also can be installed on the horizontal in a pinch

I hear that! Sometimes it's almost impossible to get the garbage disposal in there and have any fall on the drain
MORE WORK!
Repair double kitchen sink
Master plumber since 99, plumbing since 91
I put the tee on the basket strainer side.
If your faucet had a rubber or plastic seal between the countertop and faucet, you're fine. If not, putty it.
You put the ring on like you know what you're doing! It's almost never that easy for me!
What I’ve seen most common in my area is the thicker (schedule 40 ) PVC traps and also a trap under each side of the sink.
First year apprentice, trying to learn as much as I can bro,
I use the same basin. I would wait on the water lines. Most the time the nuts that hold the faucet down don’t fit over them. Always check first
In 35 years of plumbing I have never seen a faucet that uses standard hold down nuts fit over a the nut of the supply line ,, lol
looks like there is s lot more room than normal under that sink.... if only... thx RW for another great vid
Thanks for watching!
Thanks! -Phil
New sub. Thank you for the straight forward and easy to follow information.
Sweet Roger good job and she’ll float for sure. BUT 😂 ida put my tailpiece extension in the disposal then trap it on the other side. thanks for sharing
Yeah I'd have tee on the other side too but I think the advantage this way is the disposal forcing directly into the trap. Different strokes.
Excellent instruction! Appreciate ya!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much! You're AWESOME!
That tool you showed for un jamming also can be used to tighten the flange
I always have one trap on each side, coming together with a double wye.
Some places require a trap on each side but others don't. I'll use an end waste like this with a single trap.
@@BlueCollarBoom same
That’s illegal in some states.
That makes it much easier to clear the drain if you need to cable it.
Great video info , Thank you!!!
perfect roger my only advice i dont use a saw to cut the pvc home depot sells a milwaukee tubing cutter specifically for this application it also bevels the pipe😀
Thank you! I am going to do this !!!!
Wonderful!
thx for your wonderful video ❤
Glad I could help
Awesome tutorial. Thanks
You're welcome! Hope it worked well for you
Back when I was a plumber's apprentice, I learned to install everything but the kitchen sink.
Very helpful great video
Thank you so much !
I'm just mentally stumped at Roger calling it a "DisposALL"
I know. Usually customers say that, and he called the faucet a sink like customers lol
Maybe it’s a Texas thing because that’s what I’ve always called it.
Your vid saved us some big$ Thank you so much!
Glad to hear it!
Excellent video, thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Great info.
Im not sure how to turn the drain to the floor instead of the wall?
Thank you so much for helping me install a sink, disposal with dishwasher connection. I was so confused about the washers and how to connect a non threaded pipe to a threaded pipe. And why doesn't anything explain the 2 types of washers? I wish you'd explained them. My washer just slid around on my pipe. Come to find out, my Handyman Store sold me an old piping kit, the washers were dried out, they were hard with no "rubberiness".
Could you dumb down just a wee bit for those of us who now find themselves financially tight and now need to make our own repairs? Thank you.
I prefer the basket strainers with the smaller nut, makes it much easier to tighten
Thank you for the video
Hello, do you recommend the p traps sold as a pack or get them individually with in the pvc section?
In some places your not allowed to hook the dishwasher directly to the disposal so check 1st before you bust out the knockout.A dishwasher tailpiece is whats used in stead and has a protusion on it to connect your dishwasher to commonly used on the vertical but also can be installed on the horizontal in a pinch
Hello. Nice instruction video. Is there a kit you used that includes all the pvc pipes necessary to install the plumbing? Thanks.
The InSinkErator I got came with a rubber gasket and did not call for plumber's putty. Do you recommend using putty in this situation?
Hi man love the vids.
Might wanna do a video installing kitchen sink with no disposal & a dishwasher. You may have one on your channel already …using a dishwasher Y etc etc
Excellent
Hey Rodger, the plumbing at my job sucks but we’re in California and I can’t get your assistance 😭
Yeah !, that insert for the sink drain riser prevents a leak, otherwise, you'll be wondering why the drain is leaking !! Lol 😆
No air vent? lol Good work man
I only use the straight piece when there’s very little room for the Ptrap
Do you have a video on how to plumb a single drain sink 33x22x9 with disposal & dishwasher setup?
