Ok Boylei I’m also making a model railroad but mines Ho scale and thanks for the inspiration and I’m sorry you accidentally put the rail under your nail
I’m 75, and you took me back to my time as a 12 year old, without your skills and equipment, but still able to build a layout that gave me great pleasure. Thank you. You’re an artist.
As a fan of model railways, I love everything about this build. I'm always impressed by how you manage to balance the Wild West aesthetics with the wackier elements.
this is just gorgeous! theres something about making these little mountains out of foam and plaster by hand that makes me so emotional. there will never be anything else in the world that looks just like this, its really unique. you should be proud!
I definitely would not be upset if you made these bigger project video's like 20 mins long... I think your loyal fans would also love this, plus you'd profit more too? Keep up the great work Mr Boylei!
The Old Hangman's Church used to be on more stable ground, but the rockslide of 46 took out most of the cliff face when the railroad company was building the canyon track. It was, frankly, a miracle that the church stayed aloft. The townsfolk of Hangman's Mesa still haven't forgiven the railroad company for leveling half their town.
I was honestly wishing that he put the church on the pillar one over and just did a double bridge thing. But this little lore makes it so much better. Great job Korra!
I was just about to comment that I thought it would be fun if the church had originally been on solid ground, but had the ground fall out from under it. Your story surrounding this event is way more interesting than the comment I had in mind, though.
I just saw folks talking about 'playing' with trains vs. 'operating'. You, my friend, proved my point. You can indeed built an amazing layout, with creativity and passion without worrying about yard operations, realistic time tables, and all the other nonsense die-hard folks get themselves into. I can bet you do enjoy playing with your creation and got a lot of relaxing hours building it and now sharing it with friends and family. You don't need a million switches, complex wiring, endless collection of rolling stock, dcc, or anything much to truly enjoy the hobby! Congrats on a great build and a well done video! Thanks for sharing!
I wouldn't mind if ALL your videos would be at least 15 min long! A huge table with train and all your lil city bits would be awesome btw! Any future plans to bring it all together?
Man, look at that Boylei hoodie! Templates make repeating parts so much faster than measuring - good call. The precariously balanced church and the ramp/bridge is DOPE! Also, the walkways and buttes are simply amazing. The acrylic sheet to cover the edges of the foam is a real pro touch. This really captures the imagination. Incredible work!!
At the end with the placement of the Black Acrylic sheet, I couldn't help but think you could have made little cut outs of tunnels like a cutaway and show a miner with a pickaxe and a lantern and then further down have other odds and ends in the strata like dinosaur bones, giant crystal giodes, the odd bit of prescious metals/stones..... an ancient UFO craft 👽....all buried at various levels 😆

it is doe very time consuming, expensive, causes back problems, causes headaches if you don't have good ventilation cus of the glue, and it's very annoying (glue and etc) (but still fun) otherwise... it's really fun to build railroads/dioramas yes.
I just came to grab some ideas about painting American west style rock formations, but I stayed for the whole set up. Really awesome and artistic work.
I am just in absolute awe. Every little detail is perfectly imperfect, from the paths to the different types of grass, to the precarious pathway down the canyon (which I find way funnier than I probably should). Plus, the rocks and canyons look like realistic rocks and canyons! And the way it all comes together at the end, plus the inclusion of a working, movable train set- every video you make inspires me, and this one is no different. You and your models and dioramas are incredible!
since the train is powered could you add an LED headlight to the front of the train an possibly a little smoke stack generator? Love the look thanks for showing!
I would have liked to see the access thing in the back that you mentioned. I understand that it probably doesn't look all finished since its just supposed to be for accessing the railroad, but its nice to see how things work. Still an awesome video. I love all your wild imaginary west stuff and I'm glad I'm subscribed
While I've always found model trains interesting, I had never actually gotten into them. My grandpa, however, had multiple models that he'd pull out when grandkids came over, as well as one he really enjoyed showing off in a small local museum he volunteered at (somewhat small town in Utah). While he was definitely more of a model plane maker, he definitely showed a big appreciation for model trains. This model reminds me somewhat of the model he would show at the museum (which honestly could just be since I haven't seen it in a while and making a connection, but still). While I didn't exactly watch the entire video (I'll watch it most likely tomorrow), it still kind of made me happy to see this. He passed away a little over a year ago, so seeing something that reminds me of him is nice.
Riding the Durango Silverton every Forth of July are some of my happiest childhood memories, seeing a model set of it was awesome and made me so happy, and this project turned out great!

“Log 245. Well, this project has been well over a year in the making, but I think we’ve finally got it down. We’ve managed to construct a central railway through Devil’s Canyon, right next to the first permanent town. It goes towards the gold mine in one of the hills, and will hopefully be profitable. I’m saying that, because we’ve lost many good men and equipment to those treacherous cliffs, so I’m really glad the whole things done. But god knows if it will work… Signed Wilson A. Some fun recommendations for improvements to this already amazing project: one, get yourself a 4-4-0 type locomotive, or a 4-6-0 type locomotive. These two wheel arrangements were common sights on western railways, unlike the USRA 0-6-0 that was supplied with the set. Two, repaint the locomotives and passenger cars into your own livery. Making a unique livery and name for your fictional railway can be great fun, and lead to even more creative ideas! I know I've had a lot of fun with creating fictional railways. And three, weather your trains! This one is more of a practical tip, honestly. It's just a bit jarring to see this dusty, realistic desert scenery, and then see a perfectly clean, shiny train race through it. A bit of weathering can really help with the illusion that this is a real place somewhere in the world, and that the train really belongs there. Real steam locomotives, and the cars they pull, are seldom ever as clean as the model is. Oil, rust, smoke, ash, and hot steam all take their toll on the appearance of the locomotives and rolling stock on any railway, and that bit of detail can really make or break a diorama.
I love the weathering idea. If the train you are proposing is much more western like that might be a good idea to. I have one more idea. This is what Luke Towan use to say. Tiny details make big change. I mean the town looks amazing but also so deserted and sterile. You could add there some signs, posts, horse "holders" etc. It could give it an illusion of life. Thanks for the good job. It's been fun to watch it. Cheers
That is a really imaginative and brilliant little project. I love model railroading but never had enough money and space to set up. The beauty of your project is that it doesnt take up much space, and it doesnt seem like it would be too expensive.
Your work is amazing. Its beautiful and you are extremely talented and skilled. Thank you for sharing videos of your art and even your process. Truly stunning.
What a charming layout! The wash really helped bring the rock faces to life. I think an "old west" 4-4-0 locomotive by atlas or bachmann would be the icing on the cake!
I loved this! Amazing massive project. As a fellow Coloradan I bet you'll understand what I mean when I say your reference photos kind of looked like the Castle Rock!
This landscape with the canyon and the ramp gave me strong vibes from that one location in Tangled that was only used for a couple minutes of a chase scene. Very cool and great work!
Outstanding! You've always created incredible miniature pieces of life and this was on a grander scale. I would definitely enjoy seeing more larger scale creations. And seeing you create them. As someone who has lived in Arizona my entire life and have grown up around the rock formations you modeled I can tell you that you did a very good job
Yeah, he has an excellent eye/focus on detail. The only thing missing is weathering the train and train tracks. Other than that - what an amazing looking project!
I've been watching Luke Towan's videos for a while now. He's definitely one to learn from. My only tip for future projects: In most cases the railroad companies and track laying contractors often use locally mined stone for ballast rock. This is even more the case in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The result is the ballast of a given stretch of rail is usually similar in color to the surrounding terrain. It's not a choice of aesthetics but rather one of economics. [edit] but I see that you did change the ballast color in the end, so, good job.
Also worth mentioning that railroad companies in the late 1800s and early 1900s built railroads and buildings big enough for adult humans to fit in sizable numbers. Therefore this is not realistic.

This was cooler than expected, even for those of us who’ve been waiting since the 007 train foreshadowing. Amazing job as always!
Very cool. I clicked on your video because I thought it was a Luke Towan video. Very well done.
Great build! Would have been cool to put a grave yard next to the town !
Great to see you getting into model railroads and what a brilliant first one!
The man needs a museum to house all this art
That was amazing! i've accually been thinking of getting into model rail-roading myself and i gotta say i never would have thought of using foam. hope to see more like this
Fantastic build, as always! I do have to say though, I'm surprised that you didn't add any greeblies to the train itself. Can't wait to see even more of this world you've created!
I actually went to Colorado for vacation with me family, the land was incredibly beautiful, and it was on the best vacations I went on (despite getting altitude sickness). I still had a lot of fun
This build is a 10!! That was incredible!!
Imagine if one day he just combines his wild imaginary west dioramas into one large diorama
That would require alot of planning for where each diorama goes
@@anishraoganesh8602 but it would be cool
Wow! Dedication and skill!
You've got to stop with this, "calling it good" this was absolutely fantastic. It looks like it could be used as a movie set. Thanks for sharing this with us, yes more of this type with your creativity would be great.
I think he refinances God in Genesis in the creation of the world "And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good." At least thats what I think of when he says it :)
