Hi, I was clearing out my recently deceased uncles estate and came across hundreds of vhs movies. They seem to be in excellent condition, maybe only viewed once, but they are not sealed. I love flipping to support my collecting. I mainly collect 80s action figure lines but VHS too. Just the other day I picked up a box of Legos for $10 at a pawn shop turned out to be 2 rare pieces in it that I flipped to pay for an expensive figure I have wanted. It was pretty exciting
I got boxes and boxes of sealed vhs tapes and I no I got the Star Wars and jaws along with a few more. My parents used to own a blockbuster type of store we rented vhs tapes and vhs players
So my guess is if its a carboard cover that slides out the cassette tape...is more likely especially still wrapped in Cellophane as a high priced tictet item??
You do make a good point, it could potential have issues. At the end of the day it’s more about the original factory presentation. Same reason people collect vintage toy boxes, vintage packs of sports cards, sealed vinyl, etc.
Call me cynical, but a lot of these collectors' market deals sound to me like what's been going on with the art market for ages. Companies deciding to inflate prices on items by inventing grading systems and companies, building up hype, make some sales by buying their own stuff in cognito, creating more hype, making honest collectors invest in the schemes and finally breaking a lot of hearts and bank accounts. "Sure, honey - let's buy the VHS for 1000 bucks. I've read its worth 10 times as much." On the positive side, people asking for 50 or 100 when selling their old movies will get it more easily. And these are prices that reflect some honest love for the colectibles.
I actually have a legit question- so what if you find a rare vhs but it's open and not sealed. Is it ever worth grading and how much does it affect the value?
Until recently, they were only grading sealed copies. I do believe that grading raw copies (open vhs) will become more popular down the line. Majority of the time 98% of the open vhs you find are going to be a dollar or two. There are a lot of rare open vhs out there that do have value, especially horror vhs. The reason for that is some of them had a low print run or the company went out of business and the movie was never released on DVD.
I just found a sealed titanic never opened still has the blue paramount seal sticker on it. from the the first year it was released 1997. I got it for 3$ at value village. I wonder if that could be worth anything.
Here’s how to make that tape valuable. Throw in trash, then go out and find every single copy you can and throw in trash. Repeat repeat repeat the process till there are less then 50 copy’s left on earth.
Great video! I'm a collector of horror and 80s vhs. My best sale was when I sold a sealed mad max 2 for 200 dollars. And my local thrift store gives vhs away.
I have a Jaws VHS Tape that is rated 8.5 from Beckett what do you think it is worth and where is the best place to sell it ?? Thanks for any advice you give me.
There are bunch of different versions so it would be hard to tell the price without seeing it. I would recommend either Ebay, Golden Auctions, or Heritage Auctions.
I'd be interested in knowing what opened and used VHS is actually worth money even if $50+. VHS is maybe the hardest bc of so many shenangians. I want to know what to look for at thrift, garage sales, etc. I know horror can do well, kids shows, and some indie, obscure stuff.
Just like VHS, Horror stuff is always very highly sought after in regards to media. I am very intrigued with foreign tapes. A lot of them have different slipcovers compared to the US releases. I think that market has a lot of potential for hardcore collectors.
@@pickingandpunching Well yes. There are certainly many Star Wars toys for example released in different countries with variations some highly collectable so why not tapes. There are probably many horror and cult classics from different countries that never even saw a release in the US on video. Although it seems to be the blockbuster franchise movies that are getting the big $$$ at this stage as you pointed out.
@@KingFahtah iconic blockbuster titles is what brings the mainstream attraction to the collecting market. Movies they grew up on and have an emotional connection too. There is a huge horror community. That horror community will pay top dollar for. As for unreleased or rare horror vhs. Those collectors prefer it open. They are buying those to watch. That’s why some of the highest selling raw vhs are horror tapes.
Thanks Kevin. I would have liked a little more information on what to look for on the cases. I have always been a visual learner. What a great gift he gave you. That Hulk is amazing. 2 of my favorite VHS are The Goonies and Tommy Boy. 😂😂
As a kid I had tons of vhs tapes (sadly most are gone as over the years I’ve upgraded to Dvd and now Blu-ray). I have a massive collection of Blu-ray’s, but I will always love vhs! There was no experience half as cool as going to the video store and renting 3-4 vhs at a time! Fun video, thanks!
That’s exactly why this market exist now. Renting VHS was an event for the entire family. It was something we all looked forward to all week long. Then we all moved onto the next best thing. I love the feeling and memories we all get from vhs.
I sold a sealed Ghostbusters VHS pre pandemic for $35. I was still fairly new to Ebay, and was going off recent sold comps. This was before I knew anything about the VHS collecting, there's no telling what version I actually sold, and how much it was really worth.
We have all been there. Do you know how many rare sealed video games Kevin and I have sold over the years??? We could of paid off our houses if we still had them. You just never know but you always can’t hold onto everything. We are in the business of flipping items to make money. Your time will come again, just keep grinding!
I have a lot of these DISNEY Black Diamond VHS Tapes brand new sealed still I even put a plastic cover over it for more protection I wonder how much I can get for them.
I have gone back and listened and cant seem to find it, but did you ever mention what movie the guy found that you offered $2500 for and he sold for $3700? Y'all mentioned to look out for them even used, but I don't think you mentioned the title. I may have just missed it some how. I would like to know though. TIA
This is just to help bring attention to the actual market. Majority of people didn’t even know this is a thing. We wanted to start with this. I would love to do more VHS content in the future on what to look out for.
There is a used shop in the next town from me and they have a huge Hogan figure outside. It has been awhile since I have driven by there. I wonder if they still have it. LOL
@@pickingandpunching although some companies do take advantage, and still make interesting, packaging. overall package design, is a lost art. I need to look into grading some of my tapes. I have a few rare Disney black diamond sealed taped I got for a steal at a yard sale. Got like 5 of them for a $100. Once I grade them I can probably get 1-2k each minimum
Lmao. Disney black diamond vhs tapes are not worth anything. It’s a myth. There was 1 tape that sold for like a thousand dollars 20 years ago. Now the market is flooded with them. Auction price doesn’t mean that’s what it is worth. Look at sold videos. Not worth anything.
Just gotta wait till the market on them gets hot around Christmas. Just bought a lot of 20 more of them for only $400 and I’ll probably 5x that once they sell

We come across sealed vhs every month at sales. 99% they aren’t worth much. We just wanted to help educate the community about them. It only takes that one sale to change your life! You just never know. That’s why knowledge is power.
We rented vhs rather than buy them back in 80’s. Now I buy them to flip online. 😊 How come companies are selling new record players, cassette players but their not making vcr players. Also, in the south where its humid, vhs tapes can develop white mold on inside the tapes. I love the Goonies movie. Me and my twin sister love Back to the Future.
I think it's because VCRs are a bit more complicated and expensive to make now because of all the moving parts. Probably cost a lot to produce with questionable financial return. It would probably take somebody who does this as a passion project unless it gets popular enough for a company to expect profit.
Hello I just subscribed to you after watching this video, I bought vhs movies when they first came out to the public they were 30.00 to 150.00 each long story short I have every movie you talked about in this video except the beta Superman one I bought and collected and watched once or twice or so and still have them in my home of course not being used but I managed to keep them all these years.
That movie was produced in the 90’s. You can still find a lot of sealed copies out there. It doesn’t mean it’s not cool though. Great movie to add to someone’s movie display just not worth much.
That's because 99.9% are not worth a quarter. I can't even give mine away Anyone want a bunch of 80's horror and a bunch of sealed ones from the late 70's or early 80's I have no space for them anymore.
I have an original Willow movie in the hardback plastic case. The movie still plays well. I have a ton of vhs movies from the 1980s and 1990s sitting in storage boxes. I'm going to go through them and research each of their value. I could be sitting on a gold mine and not even know it.
Im 46 and collected many things over my life, and even understand the grading with toys, comics, and cards, but never thought theyd start grading V.H.S. tapes. Theres a collectible market for almost anything, but my question is, whos paying 30 some thousand dollars for a graded movie? I can see the market to collect, but its for those of us with nostalgia and not more money laying around than we know what to do with, so whos throwing that kinda money around?? I actually have quite a few movies and dvd box sets that i picked up SUPER cheap that are still wrapped and with Best Buy stickers on em. The Best Buy price is 30 to 40'dollars on my Smallville sets, and i got em for 1.95 a SET!!! I also have some Quantum Leap sets and various movies, all with Best Buy stickers. I dont buy wrapped movies unless they feature a store brand sticker on the plastic seal.
Some of the 1970’s movies weren’t released on vhs until later in the 80’s due to how expensive they were originally to make. Once they were able to lower the price for the general public, they started to release a lot of older movies on vhs.
My copy of Goonies is sealed first audition 1985 but in a white case not black like yours! Is that a good one? Is Hackers,Crossroads,No retreat no surrender sealed original worth anything?
Kevin we rented the VHS player too! They were crazy expensive back then. We would get it from this Ma and Pa video movie rental store and we kids loved picking out the movies to watch. There was no Blockbuster then! When my Mom finally bought a VHS player it was $800! 😮 Crazy! I miss the Blockbuster days of perusing all the movies, buying overpriced candy and popcorn, and seeing all the people in there on Friday night! Lol It was so fun! I would never return my movies on time though and had to pay the late fees! 😅
As a kid, I looked forward to my Friday night trip to the video rental store. Only to get there and see all 50 copies of the new release rented. When watching a movie at home was a big deal. The good old days! I miss them.
Chances of an average Joe getting $28,000 for a VHS tape they found at a garage sale or goodwill are as high as those of winning lotto… don’t hold your breath
This was so cool and interesting. I remember VHS vs Beta and always thought beta would win. All these movies I’ve owned 😳 and Jaws is my favorite. I saw it in the theater when it first came out.
I have a back to the future with the McDonald's promo sticker on it still sealed and never opened in mint condition. I also have a few other unopened vhs tapes but have about 40 others that are opened but still in mint condition! The film tape in the open ones are in mint condition
Impressive video! I also caught the VHS bug in 2021 and have since dedicated numerous hours to my research. One significant realization I made is the absence of a definitive guide on the subject. Instead, I discovered that the most reliable information could be gleaned from studying the tumultuous home entertainment industry of the 1980s and 1990s. It was a truly chaotic era, marked by mergers, acquisitions, separations, lawsuits, and shady dealings. It seemed like nearly every studio and distribution company was intertwined at some point or another. Consequently, with each change came new iterations of company names and logos, which necessitated alterations on the actual tapes themselves. This process typically occurred rapidly. By familiarizing oneself with this rich history, identifying the initial releases-often the most sought-after ones-becomes a relatively easier task.
You make a great point! Knowing the history allows you have to a better understanding of seals, stickers, watermarks, logos, etc. It was truly the Wild West!

Probably the best sealed VHS I've found would be Night of the Demons 2, got it from a lot that came from a former video store for $1. Having trouble finding info on it because most of the "sealed" copies available don't have the watermarks.

Thats how I got started as well.
Look for a dual VHS and DVD player. I still have one because the DVD side still works.
They bring great money, especially the ones that have HDMI capability.
I got boxes and boxes of sealed vhs tapes and I no I got the Star Wars and jaws along with a few more. My parents used to own a blockbuster type of store we rented vhs tapes and vhs players
I have Star Wars on Beta but sadly the case was was damaged in my move across country.
Thats awesome. Do you have any old store signs, promos items, or tapes laying around?
So my guess is if its a carboard cover that slides out the cassette tape...is more likely especially still wrapped in Cellophane as a high priced tictet item??
I recently found a sealed copy of E.T. 1996 VHS
Is there anyone to chat with about a star wars box set with halo gram on front I just want more info on.
but the main thing to be graded would be the tape itself no ? it could be totally destroyed in there if it stood next to a hifi system or whatever
I've read its worth 10 times as much."
On the positive side, people asking for 50 or 100 when selling their old movies will get it more easily.
And these are prices that reflect some honest love for the colectibles.
Amazing and perfect timing! I love knowing what to look for! Thank you both!!
I’m glad that we were able to help!
Hope you did some extra research because advise from people who sell, should be taken with a lot of salt!
Cheers
You said that you “Used’ to have the Ghostbusters VHS on your shelf, did you trade it , sell it? What did you get for it?
I think I sold it. It was a used copy so not very mucy
I used to own a VHS store I have everything sealed in storage ?
That would be really cool to do a video going thourgh it all.
@@pickingandpunching but anyone can seal stuff no ?
Yes, but you can't counterfeit the original factory seal very easily.
@@pickingandpunching thanks Rod- I don’t care what Mike/Death Pile Picker says about you, you are a good dude!
@@brianklaus2468 don’t listen to anything that Jabroni says!
Repeat repeat repeat the process till there are less then 50 copy’s left on earth.
these top 10s are incredibly better than videos that sort sold listings by price
There is a lot more work that goes into doing these. I’m glad that you enjoyed it!
Are Blockbuster VHS head cleaners worth anything? I have a few of them one is sealed.
Yes.
It sounds similar to first edition/first print book values vs the later editions.
100%, it’s the a very similar process. The only difference is, VHS don’t put “first edition” on them like books do.
which video are you talking about at 28 mins ? the one you offered $2500 for ???
Cars on VHS - it was a club-only release
Great video! I'm a collector of horror and 80s vhs. My best sale was when I sold a sealed mad max 2 for 200 dollars. And my local thrift store gives vhs away.
Great score! What’s your most valuable horror movie?
I have a Jaws VHS Tape that is rated 8.5 from Beckett what do you think it is worth and where is the best place to sell it ?? Thanks for any advice you give me.
There are bunch of different versions so it would be hard to tell the price without seeing it. I would recommend either Ebay, Golden Auctions, or Heritage Auctions.
Thank you both for giving us all your knowledge! This is so awesome
I’m glad that you enjoyed it!
Very confused. Are you talking about tapes that weren't watched or tapes that are played and still have the box ?
Sealed
I'd be interested in knowing what opened and used VHS is actually worth money even if $50+. VHS is maybe the hardest bc of so many shenangians. I want to know what to look for at thrift, garage sales, etc. I know horror can do well, kids shows, and some indie, obscure stuff.
Are any V-2000 tapes highly collectable? Or Laserdiscs / CED Video Discs? Also what about foreign tapes / pal format?
Me too brother

I’ve had a hard time finding info on distributor demos, it has the full movie on it as well it’s Disney Lady &the Tramp from Christmas 1987
So they are only worth anything if they are sealed?
Don't be jealous, but I found a sealed VHS copy of the HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat with Donny Osmond 🤣🤣🤣🤣

It will bring back some great memories.
I have a copy of the West Side Story. I have never been open. Do you think it made cost anything? Thanks
No.

TIA
You are referring to the movie Cars. It was the very last Disney VHS club release. It had a very limited print run.
I'm much more interested in VHS worth $20 or $30, the odds of finding one of these $30,000 tapes out in the wild is pretty much zero
This is just to help bring attention to the actual market. Majority of people didn’t even know this is a thing. We wanted to start with this. I would love to do more VHS content in the future on what to look out for.
Where to sell the tapes I have tones of the old disney
Damn, Rod. I've never seen someone so supremely uncomfortable. If you tug or readjust that shirt anymore, it'll fall right off.
There is a used shop in the next town from me and they have a huge Hogan figure outside. It has been awhile since I have driven by there. I wonder if they still have it. LOL
You should try and buy it! LOL
Ive been collecting VHS for a decade now so, everyone thinks Im insane haha. Anything with cool package art is appealing really.
The cover art is what sold me on vhs as.a kid. I used to pick my rentals solely on the cover art, lol.
@@pickingandpunching although some companies do take advantage, and still make interesting, packaging. overall package design, is a lost art. I also collect vintage toys and now it just seems like they slap a figure in a blister pack and call it good. Some of the toys I had from the 80s have the most incredible fantasy paintings as their front cover.
I need to look into grading some of my tapes. I have a few rare Disney black diamond sealed taped I got for a steal at a yard sale. Got like 5 of them for a $100. Once I grade them I can probably get 1-2k each minimum
Just fyi there are very few rare disney vhs. There are some however so I'd be careful to make sure first.
I worked for Radio Shack mid 80’s and bought a Beta player. I picked wrong!! However I loved Beta tapes better. But eventually the area of Beta at the video store shrunk.
Some people loved beta. Unfortunately, the better product doesn’t always win the war.
Fact is, all the tv co's used beta.

Me and my twin sister love Back to the Future.
you make a good point, someone needs to make new VCRs.
I sure this video brought back some good memories for you.
I have a sealed, "sandlot " is that good?
That movie was produced in the 90’s. You can still find a lot of sealed copies out there. It doesn’t mean it’s not cool though. Great movie to add to someone’s movie display just not worth much.
No.
Had no idea VHS could be so valuable. Good info. Thanks!

That's because 99.9% are not worth a quarter. I can't even give mine away
Anyone want a bunch of 80's horror and a bunch of sealed ones from the late 70's or early 80's I have no space for them anymore.
I have an original Willow movie in the hardback plastic case. The movie still plays well. I have a ton of vhs movies from the 1980s and 1990s sitting in storage boxes. I'm going to go through them and research each of their value. I could be sitting on a gold mine and not even know it.
Keep in mind that most of the ones that bring big money are the ones that are frist releases and are brand new still.
@@pickingandpunching yeah, I figured.

List at auction start low. Could be the tape it’s self that hurts you. Not all tapes play the same.
Hello Kevin! I think that the movie jaws in 1975 and jaws 2 in 1987!
Crazy!
Good old days glad we lived through that era

This was so cool and interesting. I remember VHS vs Beta and always thought beta would win. All these movies I’ve owned 😳 and Jaws is my favorite. I saw it in the theater when it first came out.
It was a battle. I love Jaws, great choice.
We saw Jaws with a big group of friends at a Drive-in in So Calif and we were all beachgoers! I didn't let it bother me.
I have a back to the future with the McDonald's promo sticker on it still sealed and never opened in mint condition. I also have a few other unopened vhs tapes but have about 40 others that are opened but still in mint condition! The film tape in the open ones are in mint condition
Love Back to the Future.
