  • Live at Robert Wyatt's Meltdown 2001
"High Hopes" is the eleventh and final track from the 1994 Pink Floyd album, The Division Bell, composed by David Gilmour with lyrics by Gilmour and Polly Samson. Its lyrics speak of the things one may have gained and lost in life, written from Gilmour's autobiographic perspective. Gilmour has said that the song is more about his early days, and leaving his hometown behind, than about the seeds of division supposedly planted in Pink Floyd's early days.

Gilmores signal strength is galactic. His broadcast is legendary in the Local Group The Floyd shows with Syd were stronger, that's why he just stood there beaming out gravity waves through out the Virgo super cluster, every one thought he was crazy maybe he was but he didn't act out otherwise. The Floyds caught enough of Barrets affect to gauge a good compromise of being out there and being present simultaneously generate the gravitational waves with out loosing your sense of locality and still pluck the dark matter strings of the universe.

Wow! Epic performance you witnessed. The fact that I’m the second comment on this bespeaks the stupidity of UA-cam algorithm or the fans of David Gilmour and Pink Floyd. That said, how long was this performance? What songs did they play? I can only imagine some other favorites that would be amazing with this set up. What songs got this whole band treatment? How were they?

    • @Morgyborgyblob
      @Morgyborgyblob 7 місяців тому

@@theusachad75 I can't recall how long it was in total. Hour and a half? He started off with Shine on You Crazy Diamond, but played it all on one acoustic, with a pedal loop. Dick Parry came on at the end for the saxophone. Wish You Were Here, Fat Old Sun, some Barret songs, some French opera. At one point someone called out for some Animals, to which Gilmour replied, "Oh, God, we'd be here all night!"
All tracks apart from the opening one were performed with the band like this. The 'Doctor' in Comfortably Numb was sung by someone off stage, and I later found out it was Robert Wyatt himself.

I took it up to my room, put the cd in, pressed play, lay back on my bed and just melted as I listened uninterrupted from the start of the album to the very end. And when it finished I pressed play and listened to the entire album again. The album will always be special to me because of the state of bliss it gave me that day. Not because of anyone or any thing, just the feeling of tranquillity it gave me. You can't buy that.

    "High Hopes"
Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun
Along the Long Road and on down the Causeway
Do they still meet there by the Cut
There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before time took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay
    The grass was greener
    The light was brighter
    With friends surrounded
    The nights of wonder
Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by the force of some inner tide
At a higher altitude with flag unfurled
We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed of world
Encumbered forever by desire and ambition
    There's a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
Though down this road we've been so many times
    The grass was greener
    The light was brighter
    The taste was sweeter
    The nights of wonder
    With friends surrounded
    The dawn mist glowing
    The water flowing
    The endless river
    Forever and ever

Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun
Along the Long Road and on down the Causeway
Do they still meet there by the Cut?
There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before times took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay
    The grass was greener
    The light was brighter
    When friends surrounded
    The nights of wonder
Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by the force of some inner tide
At a higher altitude with flag unfurled
We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed of world
Encumbered forever by desire and ambition
    There's a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
Though down this road we've been so many times
    The grass was greener
    The light was brighter
    The taste was sweeter
    The nights of wonder
    With friends surrounded
    The dawn mist glowing
    The water flowing
    The endless river
    Forever and ever

If you know music, the TIMING of this song is immaculate. Anyone can play an instrument, but not everyone can manage the timing. Little too late, little too early the whole rhythm of the song is lost. Timing of this musical masterpiece is the key to success of this song.

The song brings me to reminisce during the 70s when I was still very young. The grass was greener and the taste was sweeter then. Life was much simpler then and thus more innocent and beautiful...

And only a few decades before that, bombs were falling all over the world, men were brutally killing each other in the freezing snow, making widows of wives and orphans of children.
Entire nations flattened and scorched in atomic flame.
The grass is still green to some kid out there

    • @pKryer
      @pKryer 3 роки тому

@@JSG-mw4qr It's called high hopes, but is more about regret, grief and nostalgia. Throw some self-doubt in there and let it marinate in time, you'll have a near-perfect combination for a, let's call it, human.
We only seem to be nostalgic of better times, but deep down inside, we are more nostalgic of better selves. Not what could have been, but what WE, could have been.

Old, contemporary, recent and new musics. Yet still this piece of art, especially this performance holds a special place in my heart forever. Whenever I'm asked about my all time favorite, this particular one comes first to my attention right away. Thank you Mr. Gilmour for eternity. Hope you enjoy your life and after.
