As a truck driver over 20 years, I never used rest areas unless emergency. Rest areas are too transient and have no protection. Truck stops or public areas are better. Never let strangers come close. It can take 5-10 seconds to lose your life
    Be safe, everyone 🙏

I was a Truck Driver 26 years and stayed the night at Rest Areas a couple times per week. I never had any bad experiences at Rest Areas except dirty restrooms on a couple occasions. I preferred them to Truck Stops. At Truck Stops I had fuel stolen from my fuel tanks until I installed metal screens in them to prevent that. I had damage to my trailer and Truck by rookie drivers at Truck Stops. Beggars and lot lizards were knocking on my door asking for money at Truck Stops. I spent the night at my delivery locations whenever possible. Had a few issues with roaming teenagers but nothing serious. The kids would knock on my sleeper wall then run away.

Good answer, but there are likely many out there who try to be frugal, and perhaps cannot afford to pay to stay at camp-grounds all the time, though they may sometimes. Lots of Seniors live on Social Security and are doing the best they can. At least if one has an RV, it is not necessary to use Rest Stop toilets at night, which can be more than a little spooky.

Im fairly well travelled, both up and down the east coast, and through the west, from MT thru CO. This is my opinion: nowhere is "safe" anymore. One of the most dangerous areas in the country is a remote place in the NW, known as a drug corridor for traffickers. You'd never know it by looking at it. Youre only as safe as the people around you, and there are dozens if not hundreds of SERIAL KILLERS loose across the US. THOUSANDS of people go missing every year. NEVER let your guard down. Predators go where the prey is, never forget it. Druggies arent zombies -- they move fast and strike hard. Just because you are horrified at the idea of hurting or killing someone, doesnt mean the stranger approaching you is. Use caution at all times.

During the day, stopped to use the restroom. 5 men in a large SUV, blocked my vehicle from pulling out and the lane behind me. People started honking their horns, they pulled up beside me, all staring at me, I jumped in my car, sped out of there. I’m always watchful wherever I stop, and actually feel most comfortable at a large truck stop for necessary on-the-road overnights. They have lots of people and lights and the stores are open all night, and I assume there are usually cameras around. But I’m under no illusion that I’m particularly safe-between being 70, limping and moving slowly due to arthritis, and knowing that most of my strength is in those muscles used to control my pup, my suspicion and watchfulness are my primary defense. I’m grateful that my pup is big enough to command respect, and once she decides someone is suspect, she has a clear “warning” bark and doesn’t change her mind.

Due to finances, I live in my van 6 months out of the year for the past 3 years.
I’ve never had issues at a rest stop BUT I have very strict rules I stick by……..
I’m in a van but it’s very self-sufficient. No, it doesn’t have AC or a heater but I can cook in it, clean up and go to the bathroom in it, if necessary.
At a rest stop, I make sure there’s no one around or very few ppl around, when I throw trash out or go to the bathroom in a rest stop facility. I always look out my windows and check my mirrors for cars or people before exiting my van.
Even though I’m in my 60s, I move fast once I exit my van, when using rest stops. Don’t dilly dally around.
I vandwell to save money, not to sightsee. I have visited tourist spots but they’re rare because they have to be very low cost or free.
I trust NO ONE OR ANYPLACE. My “radar” is always up. Wherever I’m at, I’m constantly looking around especially when I exit my vehicle.
I try to stick to areas that are not busy or close to cities.
I NEVER exit my van at night.
I NEVER camp outside or sit outside my van.
ALWAYS keep my van locked up.
I’ve been approached while in my van. I only lower the windows 1 to 3 inches.
One was a genuine situation of a woman needing water and food for her and her dog.
I helped her out BUT I never opened any of my doors. I just lowered my window 3 inches and handed her some things thru that window. I will never deny a person or animal food or water. I carry plenty and just in case, I always carry a small bag of dog and cat food. She was ever so grateful.
There was no issue after that.
I can’t stay at truck stops because they’re VERY NOISY. I’d never get any sleep.
In public places, there’s a likelihood of getting “the knock” and they can be very noisy too.
I always keep in mind that crimes are committed everywhere nowadays and lots of violence exists.
I’ll say it again, I trust NO ONE.
And just for the heck of it, I say a prayer at the end of the day.

That is absolutely one of the worst crimes I’ve ever heard of. They were doing what hundreds of thousands of people do every day. Thieves, thugs, or whatever you want to call them, are getting more brazen all the time. The street drugs that are out there today are much more toxic, and therefore more mind altering than ever, which I’m sure was the case here. Our beautiful country has turned into a very dangerous place.

The safe harbors & precautions taken by the law abiding need to really be increased by each of us & this story makes that so clear. Crime is so violent today that it is increasingly not possible for others to come to the rescue of those in need - much as they might want - like in this incident but all the information (& videos) one can take increases the likelihood of an arrest as occurred here. Carol, your continued reporting of these incidents ... & tragedies like this ... brings home the reality of the “new America” we live in today & keeps us on our toes whether a nomad or stix n bricks dweller. YOU stay safe ... thanks for sharing this very heartbreaking story. And ... for those who claim your reporting is fearing mongering ... they are in denial of the reality of the escalating, senseless, & very widespread violence in America today.

I, too, hear about this tragedy. Allegedly the Suspect was demanding the couple's Jeep tow vehicle. An in daylight crime of carjacking is not that uncommon. The elderly or people who are distracted easily are prime targets as victims. This incident clearly moved quickly toward extraordinary violence with tragic and deadly results 💔. I hope the victim's wife survives her injuries 😢. So heartbreaking about her husband's death 😢 💔.

I’m a former solo truck driver and would always stay in public rest areas and found them to be overwhelmingly clean and safe. The caviate to this is I would never use the restrooms after dark unless there was a guard. You are vulnerable doing this in a public rest area in a way you aren't in other places. Bad things can and do happen everywhere. I’m not saying this couple wasn't, but always pay attention to your surroundings and use your gut. If anything feels sketchy anywhere, move along.

Sad to say, last week a woman was attacked by a local lake, a favorite park for dog walkers.
The comment that nowhere is safe was spot on. Just yesterday I was at a picturesque local town. I was rear-ended by a very prominent retired attorney. The gentleman stopped, but refused to provide his ins information. When I insisted, he gave me his Vin number and a phone number for his ins that was a non-working number. The number he'd provided police. He also told the officer he had reported the accident to his ins. That was another lie. He is an older man, so I was giving him the benefit of the doubt. BIG MISTAKE! Be careful, always call the Police, even if you think the person looks honest, they may not be!

You are sharing a tragic event that happened to one in the RV community. We need to be aware of our surroundings and who is around us. I was reflecting on my road trip to Texas last month and there were times when I was vigilant in being aware of who was around at rest stops and even gas stations and other times I slipped into complacency and just was not paying attention like I should. Watch and pray on the road and at your camp sites whether undeveloped or not, there are people who do not have your best interest at hand. Find and carry some type of protection with you and know how to use it. Bless you for sharing, be and stay safe out there.

I consider rest areas some of the more dangerous places one can stop. I would never stop there unless I had no other choice, like if I were sick and needed a bathroom. I'm so sorry this couple didn't realize how psychopaths looking for an "easy" mark along the interstates are known to target rest stops. This is why so many truckers sleep at truck stops and only at rest areas when they forced to do so by DOT rules.
If anyone reads this comment, I hope you will heed my warning. Rest stops are *not* the place to stop unless you see Highway Patrol cars parked there. Keep driving until you get to a truck stop where many people can be found, and the truck stop has employees who can call for help if something were to happen. Psychopaths looking for some quick and easy money definitely look for people at rest areas because they are more isolated than truck stops and gas stations. They generally wait INSIDE the stalls and when you come in (or exit), that is when they strike.
If you need a place to sleep more safely, try a Loves/Pilot or even a hotel/motel parking lot. Take care out there~

Sad that no one heard anything before a life was lost.
Neighbors, an elderly couple , were beaten & hog tied ,in their home , in broad daylight. They were in their 80s. Another neighbor, standing in front of the home I sold his sister, was standing out front of it when a man came up to him & slashed him across his face. This man was in his 50s ( as was the person who did it. None of this has anything to do with the 'world today' , as violence has occurred since the world has existed. Unfortunately, this happens everywhere & at all times to many different aged people. Stay vigilant. Personally, I ALWAYS park where there are semis & car traffic. Do not live in fear because if you are , #1- you arent living & #2 - you cannot be fully aware . Stay prepared. Always be aware of your surroundings & stay armed. Pepper spray, tazzer, pue pue, dog, etc.

They obviously didn’t have the door locked. It’s assumed they were making some lunch. He demanded their jeep-that was their tow vehicle. The husband refused and he stabbed him then the lady tried to fight and he got her she ran outside and he followed & continued to Stab her. Now that’s what was reported on the other nomad ch.
as far as rest stops I prefer them and won’t let this scare me but although I always look around before I get out of my pickup- now I will be even more cautious everywhere I stop. I’m not full time Nomad- but I do travel alone often.
