This is the strangest thing in the world, but I am SURE that those were my tapes. I would have been about 11 in 1997 and I routinely recorded stuff like this on various tapes. Not only is that my handwriting, but I distinctly remember writing the capital A in "various" and always being bothered by it. Some years ago my mother donated all of our old cassettes. I am blown away by the odds of seeing this! Crazy!
I had the exact same experience when I saw those tapes. Looks exactly like my handwriting, and I vividly recall the capital A. A very, very surreal experience. Maybe some sort of Mandela effect phenomenon? Or maybe there were a bunch of us obsessive VHS recorders with the same handwriting and capitalization errors.
Hopefully Ian will review the vArious tape soon and give more clues. If I could just see a commercial or bumper with some sort of station identification, it would help set my mind to rest. If I can positively ID these as being from no place I ever lived, I'll know my brain was just playing tricks.
@@diablo_guapo You know, I was thinking the same thing. I don't know how many commercials might've been local on these cartoons. The ones Ian covered were always on nonstop, so I'm sure everyone in the country was brainwashed by them.
Either way I got the experience of a sudden sharp memory activation when watching this. I really can't describe how strange it is to have a sudden unprompted activation of memories I didn't even know I still had, but it was definitely far more than I bargained for when casually watching a UA-cam video after work. If you got the same then I'd say we both came out ahead on this!
Ian gets these tapes at thrift shops I'm pretty sure. You should ask him for the location of the store and see if it's close to where you live
@@DylanNese’s from the Seattle area right? I remember he reviewed a mall now too far from me in Everett Wa. About 40 mins from my place
Are you from the Seattle area maybe? I remember moose reviewing Everett mall in Washington state. Although IIRC WB was channel 10 in the 90s in Western WA state. Fox kids was channel 13. This video showed WB33. Not sure where that was
I was a genuine Beetleborgs nut as a kid. Basically, Shadowborg stole their ability to borg (morphing in this series) but they still retained their non-transformed powers. So they get help from another kid, give him the ability to borg, he gets their powers back, etc.
The blue guy is a magical phasm they accidentally freed from the pipe organ, and his name is Flabber.
Really silly show but it was a lot of fun when you're not very old yet.
Edit: Also I actually still have a large portion of the Shadowborg saga taped from when it aired on Fox Kids...somewhere. And a lot of Digimon from when it aired a few years later. I taped a lot of tv. Makes me wonder what kind of ads are on those tapes, lol.
It's borgin time

As someone who grew up watching Beetleborgs, yes, I am indeed pretty weird. Never could quite pinpoint the defining moment that I turned out the way I am, but it all makes sense now. Thank you for this epiphany.
An epiphany a day keeps the doldrums away.

Beetleborgs was cool
Watching brutal moose is the closest I can get to hopping off the school bus in 1998 and watching Nickelodeon in my basement with my GI Joes while eating flavor blasted goldfish again. Especially if I bought goldfish

As much as I complained about the commercial breaks back in the 90s.... it's the commercials I miss the most and find the most nostalgic. Love this VHS series tho!
From the end of 1997, I didn't have any television so this was the last stuff I saw in my childhood. Those commercials are embedded into my brain. It feels so good to see them again.
I'm guessing they didn't record the intro to "Big Bad Beetleborgs", it was one of those shows where the ENTIRE plot is explained in the opening theme. I was a devotee of this show at the age of 4.
I was thinking, I never heard of Beetleborgs before now and I thought at first glance it was something similiar to Power Rangers LMAO
@@LocalTorchwoodIntern Fun fact, the Japanese shows that Power Rangers and Beetleborgs are adapted from had a crossover movie in 2013, along with Kamen Rider. It's called Super Hero Taisen Z and I believe you can find it subtitled on UA-cam.
@@realityb5759 OH damn thats cool!!
The only thing I remember about Beetleborgs was they were part of the pogs set McDonald's was giving away with the Power Rangers and VR Troopers
I was a bit disappointed he didn't get to see it. The Beetleborgs theme is wacky and I'm sure Ian would have enjoyed it.
Anyone ever notice how we never see Ian MacMystery and Chef Ian Brutalfoods in the same room?
Let's not forget Hungry-Man...👀
I'm sure their similarities are merely a matter of coincidence. You know, with 7 billion people on the planet, you're bound to get some repeats eventually.
i heard they wanted to colaborate but their schedules never line up
Eerie Indiana is definitely a show you should check out. I loved it as a kid. Saddly it only ran for one season but it does have some genuinely creepy stories to it.
I thought something was a little off about it (like why did Omri Katz still have a prepubescent voice despite Hocus Pocus being considerably older than this tape) so I looked it up, and yeah: Eerie Indiana originally ran on NBC from 1991 to ‘92, and was reaired on Fox Kids in 1997.
The one where the mother keeps her kids eternally the same age by storing them in giant tupperwares was pretty cool.
There was a spinoff it also lasted 1 season.
The whole season is available for free (with ads) on Amazon Prime ✌️
@@TheMoviePlanet oh my god!! Was that it!!!😱😱 I think I’ve searched for years for this episode!!!
5:30 Ian, the Green Goblin literally says the same thing in the Toby Maguire Spider-Man movies.
That's not the show or the movie's writing, that's just how cheesy Spider-Man was in the silver age, which is what both the 90s show and the 2000s movies are based on (in the case of the movies, often down al the way to shot composition since Sam Rami based it on the comics he read growing up). Spider-Man is absolute cheese-wiz, and that's part of the charm.
And why Sam Raimi is the man!! Along with the other two stooges, Ted and Bruce Campbell!
Cheers from Canada
Shop smart, shop S-MART!
So? No matter where it's said, it's still bad and stupid writing. Cheesey isn't always good.
Eerie Indiana is a pretty fun show from what I remember from watching it as a kid with my dad. With its recurring characters and general format, it has more in common with X-files than Goosebumps or Are You Afraid of the Dark. Sad that only a snippet of it was included on the tapes. I'd love a deeper look at it if you ever felt inclined.
Eerie Indiana was like an alternate universe Pete and Pete.
It holds up very well. I still watch the full series once a year or so as an adult.

The blue guy's name is Flabber! I used to watch that show all the time as a kid, which is probably why I grew up to be so cool and well-adjusted.
Oh man that Tyco Rebound commercial was an absolute blast from the past. Soooo much nostalgia for those old commercials.
I was a lucky kid that had one, and it's just as badass as it looked in the commercials. Best Rc toy I ever had.
8:17 Holy shit I had a Tycho Rebound! I loved that thing! The idea of a RC that couldn't fall over was just mind blowing to an 8 year old.
Quick appreciation for Ian's choice of aspect ratio.
I love that it's always been 4:3 but this episode seems notably clearer and more "HD" than previous episodes; the previous episodes were more grainy

Great for filling my my whole 4:3 screen. I really appreciate the detail.
This is probably my favorite series on the channel. But, more importantly than that, the shot at 11:05 of MJ is ICONIC!!
Is MJ his cat? That's not the part of the video about spiderman.
@@countyfacts6920 yes the cat is named MJ . Don’t know if she named after Mary Jane She must’ve known about the hydro man portion of the type.

Your spider-man review at the beginning there really got me.
A man attempts to force himself on a woman, and when she refuses he brings up her past trauma to hurt her.
Ian: "Aww there so cute."
A man and a woman both willingly stare into each others eyes in the rain.
Ian: "Ewwww! I've had enough of this."
The way you wrote it sounds like the bare essentials to a 90's/00's romcom

Pretty cool seeing you here, I enjoy your Walking Dead videos from time to time.
Dude, these videos are SO great. Growing up in the 90's, all this stuff is so nostalgic.
BrutalMoose videos somehow give me such strong nostalgia for things I’ve never seen or heard of
It's a vibe thing
Oh my gosh - same here 👋🏾
Lol that's my son when I watch. He gets to listen to, "omg I remember that!" over and over. He now wants 90's toys and TV shows, and I'm here for that venture.
As a kid I used to love watching toy ads more than the shows themselves lmao
Also MJ!!!! The queen has graced us with her presence :)
I remember Eerie, Indiana. My mom and brother love the show. I think my mom has the series on DVD. I remember it being almost a kids version of X-Files mixed with something like Goosebumps(like Ian said) or Are You Afraid Of The Dark
Ian may post once every other month, but when he does, it is a treat
Quality over quantity
Misc and Various tapes are what you use for recording your daily shows and then, after you watch them, recording other daily shows. Ad infinitum until the tape starts to degrade or you end up recording something you want to keep and then you have to start another tape, such as Misc II, or More Various.
@ 11:42 Every Applejacks commercial was like that, where they'd ask the kids why they eat it and there's always a pause, everyone looks around the room, and they're like, "We just do." Kinda bad advertising, lol.
I really liked Eerie Indiana as a kid, total nostalgia for me. Rewatched the entire first season recently (its free on UA-cam as I post this) and the charm is definitely still there. Would really recommend checking it out if you haven’t seen it.
oh damn okay
This was really a blast from the past! I remember most of those commercials. Love this series, keep it up, Moose! Also, I love the "plop." sound effect every single time.
Always makes my day when there's a new Brutal Moose, ESPECIALLY when it's mystery VHS.
My local grocery store had to say their double coupon program didn't apply to the Oreo deal so they wouldn't have to give you 2 lbs of Oreos.
I loved that transition from a Stephen King looking series into "BEETLE WAR, BEETLE WAR"
And just like that, everything going on in my life is paused. Nothing takes priority over mystery tapes.
How about BrutalFoods?
@@thesexybatman263 Mystery Tapes, BrutalFoods, and Gerbert all take equal top priority.

Oh man, that Spider-man series on that tape brings me back to when I was a kid watching TV on Saturdays. And now, it's all on Disney Plus.
That electric guitar theme song is forever imprinted on my brain!
Yeah, I’m happy to be able to watch stuff I missed on Disney +
as long as Ian's videos are this high quality, and I get to see content from him again, I'll glady wait weeks-months. Never fails to make my day when he uploads.
Oh man, I remember that ad for that RC car! The one I ended up getting for Christmas one year was called the "TMX Dragonfly," a bright red and black RC car with an X-shaped back end which could be lifted or lowered to give it a wider or narrower back wheelbase, and also allowed it to drive even if flipped upside down or sideways. Awesome toy and I got years of good fun out of it.
There is absolutely no chance Pauly was sober during his segment, and honestly who could blame him? I definitely wouldn't be if I had to record something like that
This is gonna sound wild, but I think I might be the original recorder of Miscellaneous and VArious. I was big into recording TV shows on VHS in the late 90s, random nonhelpful labels were my go-to naming convention, and that looks EXACTLY like young me's handwriting - right down to the weird capital A in VArious.
Last I knew, those tapes and several drawerfuls more were just sitting in my parents' basement several states away, and they never threw anything out. But as soon as I saw those labels, I had a vivid flashback of writing them. So I'm mildly freaking out right now.
There's a quick way to prove my possibly lying memories wrong, tho. Ian, if you ever see this comment, do those tapes have any commercials or bumpers indicating they were recorded from a Milwaukee station by chance?
Hope we get an answer!
You’re like the 8th person I’ve seen claiming to be the original owner.
@@Mr.Obongo I'm probably not. It would blow my absolute mind if I was. I definitely watched the Spider-Man cartoon, but I have never saw any of the other shows. I saw at least one other commenter who vividly remembers writing the capital A in "vArious." I'm probably not the only person with bad handwriting who recorded TV shows onto vhs in the 90s. But part of my brain absolutely recognizes those tapes. Memory is a weird thing.
I'm hoping Ian reviews "VArious" soon and gives me more clues.
These appear to have been recorded in the Dallas-Fort Worth area (from what I can see from the WB33 logo in the Road Rovers clip)…
I TOTALLY remember that Tyco Rebound as a kid! I remember I did get one for Christmas that year and it lasted me for years! That thing was indestructible! I had for probably 10 years or more till the battery finally stopped taking charges and replacement batteries weren’t sold anymore.Best toy I ever got as a kid! Great video Ian! :D

Ian, I just wanted to say that you have been on a roll these past few years in terms of content. Just nonstop hits. Keep it up!
I really like that episode of Spider-Man. It did a great job explaining MJ's noncommittal personality.
Hell yeah my favorite show on UA-cam returns!! I could watch you talk about VHS tapes all day long
I really hope this series keeps going…
This was one hell of a nostalgia trip. I remember watching this exact run of episodes. Talk about a time warp
You need to look up Eerie Indiana because that shows is great! You ended up watching an episode of “Big Bad Beetleborgs” or something like that. Eerie Indiana has a classic episode where there are twin boys in it, please search for it and enjoy. Keep doing stuff, Ian, love it.
There was a lot of crap on Fox Kids, but Eeerie Indiana was my favorite. I especially remember the "just can't get enough" episode with John Astin. Beetleborgs on the other hand annoyed me quite a bit...
The twins was the very first episode with the ForeverWare. Such a great short-lived series that still holds up as an adult.
"Eerie Indiana" unlocked the most disturbingly vague memory in my brain. Like a forgotten dream that somehow came to life
I just recently started digitising the tapes that are in our family from early 90s.
Back then my father worked at electronics store, and to my disappointment, he knew how to turn on the the "broadcast detection" or whatever it was called, so almost no commercials for me 😐
15:55 I always enjoy those half-peeled-off stickers: they tell you the story of a kid who is now older and tried to get rid of something about their childhood to show how much of a grown-up they are, but gave up halfway. "Eh screw it, adulthood isn't worth all this effort."
You've set up a great series that could eventually lead to you finding a really creepy tape with some Ring type stuff on it. Like for a Halloween episode or something stupid like that
The only problem is that there’s a chance that the stuff inside is real, which would not go well morally or possibly legally.
Ian is truly one of my all time favorite content creators. I absolutely loved this video, there were plenty of jokes that I found absolutely hilarious, along with editing that just never misses! You're one of those UA-camrs I just sort of stumbled onto somewhat early in your UA-cam presence, and I just keep coming back to your channel. You've always been funny and entertaining. The platform is better for having ya. 🤙🤙🤙
Speaking of commercials depending on the broadcast being viewed takes me back to when I was growing up, and didn't yet understand the concept of commercials being partially based on that criteria. I distinctly remember when I first started regularly watching more adult-oriented programs, and being confused why television didn't advertise things like toys, and board games during commercial breaks like when I was younger.
You know, i think you did so awesome with this Mystery Tapes episode. It's hilarious and entertaining at the same time 😉👍
Plus, i remembered The Beetleborgs as they were created by Saban, the same company who created Power Rangers (One of my all time favorite TV shows). Plus, Power Rangers Zeo was awesome!🤘 😎🤟
I had a long day, and this really turned it around. Thank you, Mr. McMystery.
The plastic sleeve makes me think of the dust covers that came on NES cartridges.
I didn't expectthis episode to be so dang nostalgic for me, even the groaning at the baby dolls was nostalgic lmao
I had to watch this twice to see if I missed MJ hanging out in the background anywhere 🐈⬛
Thanks for making these videos with an aspect ratio that fits the VHS tapes! I like watching these on my CRT monitor. :D
If I remember correctly, the three adult ghosts in the Casper series are meant to be Casper's uncles, though I couldn't tell you if they're meant to be blood-related or not. My knowledge of Casper lore only goes so far. Anyway, I loved this tape. It definitely hits the Millennial nostalgia sweet spot just right.
The Zzzand is just kinetic sand. I had never heard of this name, but in my middle childhood (2002-2006), they must've rebranded it as Moon Sand. Same exact product, but despite the lunar name, the marketing was much less space themed. You can buy kinetic sand online easily, though I have no idea what it will be named, or why it was ever advertised gallactically.
Brutalmoose, always eternally on the nostalgia train
I'm so delighted to have a new one! I've been hyperfixated on this series for a while now :-)
Man, I miss how sometimes I’d just let the tape run out when you knew you only had a few minutes left.
I love the blip of a different show as well, a bunch of movies taped off of the TV in my home had that happen, if you were lucky it was within the adverts!
It usually happens when someone accidentally press the record button, but realises it right away, and presses stop again, like if you forgot to fast forward to the end of a half used tape.
Oh my gosh, I owned the new born baby checkup kit as a child and I had no idea where it came from or what it was since the sticker was missing off the front. Thank you Brutalmoose for letting me know what that weird little doctor kit was all about.
Yay another one I have been going through my old vhs tapes as well and uploading commercials as shorts. It's alot of fun to see what all are on mystery tapes.

The narration...excellent. Thank you!
Bizarrely I remember that exact episode of Casper despite not seeing it since probably 1997... for me growing up in the 90s cartoon Spiderman was Spiderman, the movie Spiderman always seemed silly and weak and a bit wussy, Spiderman was like a proper adult kind of guy in the cartoons and it all seemed more grown up to my addled kid mind. Miss the 90s though, will have to dig out my old CBBC and CITV tapes to relieve grainy Duck Tales and Thomas the Tank Engine episodes. Keep up the good work Mr Moose!
I could watch Brutalmoose watching old VHS tapes for hours on end. LOL Is there anything wrong with me? This is total nostalgia and hilarious! 😁 The Mary Jane art killed me.

Broooooo you hit gold! Saturday Morning Cartoon sets are true treasures! Gotta know where you go to get these sold as blank tapes.
I am glad he went back and did this, also these commercials were good, maybe even lost media but who knows.
The nostalgia in this video is palpable! Seeing some of these commercials, Spiderman, and Beetleborgs teleported me back to a five year old watching cartoons again. I almost forgot about Beetleborgs, I loved that show as a kid and even had some of their toys. If only we could go back in time just to experience those great childhood moments again. ^__^
I was 100% guilty of putting vague labeling on tapes like "miscellanious" and "various". Somehow I still remembered what was on all of them...in order! And oh those commercials...those kids were always over the top losing the mind at everything their toys did. I remember noticing this as an actual kid.
Love this series, keep em coming! I definitely remembered the commercial for the tyco rebound. Always wanted one. They looked so cool.
