@Frizzurd I can still see what you mean, and a lot of it has to do with a shift in fashions/vibe. The UA-camr obviously prefers his Sub Pop Record artists compared to the headbangers of the glam metal years. And it seems now there is a backlash against 1980s nostalgia (and the 2010s) thanks to a new president being elected, but of course, I'll still continue to showcase the '80s and '90s equally on my channels (a slight edge to the '80s actually), with a few surprises from earlier decades on occasion. Fun fact about Xena and Hercules: The Legendary Journey. They were both produced by Renaissance Pictures, which was founded by none other than Bruce Campbell and the Raimi Brothers of "Evil Dead" fame. Bruce also appears in around 50 episodes across both series. They would use the experience of making the two series to create Army of Darkness.
I grew up just south of Richmond, VA. Fun fact -- WTVR Channel 6 was the first television station to begin broadcasting in the South. They started broadcasting on April 22, 1948 and still operate to this day with the same call sign!
You can also see Bruce Campbell aka Ash from Evil Dead in the background at 4:54. Another fun fact: the actress of Xena later played Ruby in the show Ash vs Evil Dead.
Xena and Hercules were Sam Raimi classics in every way. Appropriate for their time, and still kinda holds up for their setting and setup. Always some well known people in there too! God I still remember that musical episode.
I cannot stress how delightfully 90s the Conclusion part looks with that effect on. Either an effect or he ACTUALLY shot the whole video with a VHS recorded, and if that - huge respect!
I can't tell you how much I love these Unlabled VHS episodes, it's like riffing roulette. I'm shocked you've never seen Xena before though, the humor is great. It's got a great Quest for the Delta Knights vibe to it.
Chesterfield Auto is a "Pick'n'Pull" salvage yard nowadays, and is still an incredibly affordable-yet-labor-intensive source for used auto parts. Just bring tools.
In California we use to have a pick'n'pull (that's literally was the name) Now it's call U pick U pull, a lot of people go there to get whatever parts they need. It's cheaper to get the parts there cause it's not going to cost them an arm and leg to get one. Some are really lucky and get a car that is in really good condition and the part are near perfect and they take it apart to get their parts. My dad LOVES going there whenever he needs a part for a car or truck. My brother he works there and gets a pretty good discount on the parts too. Also he gets to pick a part before they set out in the yard. Lol

Gum was such a thing in the 90s/early-mid-2000s. Everyone chewed gum, everyone had gum on them, half the impulse buy rack and a notable portion of a shelf or two in the candy aisle at the grocery store was gum. No idea why, but I do remember reading an article at some point that said the downturn in people chewing gum was very closely correlated to the 2008 recession and resulting decrease in disposable income.
I think it replaced smoking for a lot of people as a habit and something to do with their hands and mouths. And, yeah, not only did people downsize their expenditures but gum also got a lot more expensive. Seeing 25¢ on the Wrigley's packs in the ads was wild.
Thanks, Ian, for reminding me that the world is ever-changing. I’m now more motivated to cherish the positive moments I’m in, and relived to know the negative moments will pass.
I can’t believe you attacked my nostalgia like that with no warning. I cried a little, I got choked up, straight up shocked, I loved it. That “Recorded Off Of TV” quality to it really hit me right in the soul bringing me back to the late 90’s watching with my dad and sister, more than any DVD recording could. Holy shit.
I remember watching a marathon of Xena back in like 2000 at my grandfather's house. I don’t know why but the show had me hooked. It really opened my eyes to more fantasy/villain of the week type shows like Buffy or some Star Trek here and there.
I've been collecting VHS for years now, and the only... questionable... material I _ever_ found out of ~500 tapes was on a tape from my _grandmother_ that she gave me to record over. It was probably an HBO recording that ran long into their overnight hours. Said recording has since long been recorded over by _The Price Is Right_ I think that it's an overblown occupational hazard of VHS collecting. Most stores toss the home-recorded tapes because of privacy issues (often they're tapes of birthday parties and trips -- literal home videos) and copyright issues (can't sell a home recording legally, but you can technically sell the tape itself). Even if a batch of home-records ends up on the sales floor, they probably won't have anything scandalous in them, because the grandkids will probably toss all the tapes in shock if they find that kind of stuff.
I actually just had to google this bc I used to watch the show but I never saw the end--I had no idea that apparently Xena dies in the final episode?? Like yeah happy fun fantasy show about a badass warrior woman then suddenly she's fucking dead
@@jprofio it's worse than just "oh she dies" they get captured by the romans (i guess?) and theres this whole episode building up to their escape... but in the end someone breaks Xena's fucking spine, and then both her and her girlfriend get crucified in a Passion of the Christ style scene... its pretty horrifying
I can't wait to see the day when Millennials and Gen Z get old enough such that we start seeing AARP ads the way we see Audible or Manscape sponsored ads in videos.
That Food Lion commercial reminded me a lot of the work of a Maine cartoonist by the name of Jeff Pert. I doubt he had any part in that commercial, but he has a very similar style.
That was never concrete, to be honest. I loved the show and only in the last couple of seasons where the fan fic took over the actual show (talk about jumping the shark) that it was shoved down our throats that they were a lesbian couple. Before that, it was implied at times, but more often it was that they were best friends (possibly with benefits?), and while I have absolutely nothing against a show about a gay couple, I think they really capitulated to a small subset of the fanhood and it really ruined the chemistry and freshness of the show.
@@jbjacobs9514 If it was hinted at and then confirmed within the show, isn't it just story progression? I've never really seen the show, but I remember it. My yikesometer activates when i see the words "forced down our throats"
@@swagnostic132 I get where you're coming from, and if it had been a natural progression or really hinted at (not a sharp left turn because of fan fiction - I guess you had to be there at the time - it was never the focus of the show or anything more than they were best friends - there was a lot of fan fic, same as with Hercules and Iolaus. It was just something fans play with and it is fun as fan fiction and pretty common in a LOT of tv shows - but then they actually let fan fic internet "authors" write scripts for the show - almost like a gimmick - and it completely changed the trajectory and success of the show to go downhill).
I love how you record these on VHS and then upload them in 4:3. Really cool thing I haven't really seen anyone else do on UA-cam. It's also refreshing to see actual VHS quality instead of that overused Adobe Premiere plugin.
Can't replicate the same skewed sensitivity of those CCDs with just a filter... or at least without spending a lot of time tweaking it. Also the filter really overuses tracking errors and shooting blips. The naturalistic sensor noise and bad contrast is far preferable.
Xena (and Hercules) were produced by Sam Raimi, which is why Ted Raimi (@3:18) "this guy here" and Bruce Campbell featured in it so frequently. Xena more like
*_ACTUALLY PAYS FOR PASSAGE TO THE UNDERWORLD UNLIKE HERCULES, THE SCOUNDREL!_*
The "beefcake" at 11:00 sounds exactly like Tommy Wiseau
Fun fact about Xena and Hercules: The Legendary Journey.
They were both produced by Renaissance Pictures, which was founded by none other than Bruce Campbell and the Raimi Brothers of "Evil Dead" fame.
Bruce also appears in around 50 episodes across both series.
They would use the experience of making the two series to create Army of Darkness.
Hercules: The Legendary Journey also starred Michael Hurst, who incidentally produced Spartacus, another TV series with Lucy Lawless in the cast.
That would explain Ted Raimi's appearance in Xena
I grew up just south of Richmond, VA. Fun fact -- WTVR Channel 6 was the first television station to begin broadcasting in the South. They started broadcasting on April 22, 1948 and still operate to this day with the same call sign!
That friend in Xena is Ted Raimi who is Sam Raimi's brother. He also played Henrietta in Evil Dead 2 in the fruit cellar 🧟♀️
Atleast one that mentioned that. XD
And Hoffman from the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy
Henrietta was my first crush. Such a cutie.
I meet Ted. We talked about Marcus Aurelius. Ted is a cool guy.
The food lion commercial reminded me of schoolhouse rock
I could see it. It was also giving me redbull commercial vibes.
Or the vintage tootsie pop commercials.
The guy who gets his winnings stolen is Ted Raimi, brother of Sam Raimi who made the evil dead movies and created the hercules show
You can also see Bruce Campbell aka Ash from Evil Dead in the background at 4:54. Another fun fact: the actress of Xena later played Ruby in the show Ash vs Evil Dead.
like spider-man Sam Raimi?
@@wooflex The same. And Darkman Sam Raimi
wooflex yeah
HOFFMAN
Lol
It's crazy to see an add for this. Used it several times to get parts for my old ford escape
@@CRSH3000 Right!?
It's bizarre!
I'm actually more surprised I never saw the ad when I was younger.
@@mysticmallachi777 I think I was probably a little too young for that one but who knows when they stopped running ads. Disappointed that there wasn't more richmond virginia stuff to show lol.
Holy shit.
Can I just say, I don’t see many people saying it but your editing and whole aesthetic is top notch
2 in less than a month, I'm honoured sir. I can't wait for this long video you are making.
I was specifically just looking for something to casually watch but mostly listen to as I cook lunch. Thanks, Ian!
dude!! i was NOT expecting a Spyro ad! that's awesome!
Oh Jesus, your gum commercial edit that ends at 13:19 got me chuckling so hard I even woke up my girl, now she's pissed.
Oh well, worth it.
Oh my god I just realised there’s a Chadtronic plush in the background! Nice touch, Ian
"Gum was a bigger deal in the 80's and 90's" - Geoff Ramsey
"Every once and a while... I leave the house."
Toasty the Sheep. He was the first boss fight of the game, piloting a mechanical scarecrow with a jack-o'-lantern for a head.
It sounds like it was voiced by Danny DeVito in the ad
I remember watching a marathon of Xena back in like 2000 at my grandfather's house. I don’t know why but the show had me hooked. It really opened my eyes to more fantasy/villain of the week type shows like Buffy or some Star Trek here and there.
Joxer the mighty!!!
That's Ted Raimi btw, Sam Raimi's brother. Bruce Campbell was also on the show
I'm scared one of these days we're gonna find a snuff film or something on these tapes
What's a snuff film?
@@powerofthec5908 you don’t want to now....
@@powerofthec5908 Man I wish I was young enough to not know the horrors out there. I would not google that esp depending on how young you are.
I've been collecting VHS for years now, and the only... questionable... material I _ever_ found out of ~500 tapes was on a tape from my _grandmother_ that she gave me to record over. It was probably an HBO recording that ran long into their overnight hours. Said recording has since long been recorded over by _The Price Is Right_
I think that it's an overblown occupational hazard of VHS collecting.
@@mynameisnothere9465 well they're definitely gonna Google it now.
Today is my birthday and I've been having a bad day.
New BrutalMoose video is what I needed. Thank you Ian
Happy birthday, hopes it gets better,

happy birthday! I'm sorry today sucks. I hope it gets better
Happy Birthday, buddy. Hope tomorrow is better :)
Thank you all!! You're the best :')
I feel old, but honestly? Seeing all this cool shit I saw as a kid(specifically the commercials) warms my heart so damn much. Love your work.
Roxer is played by my boi Ted Raimi. I did not know he was in this. Hoffman has been getting around.
I get wayyyyy too excited about the Raimis and Bruce Campbell
His name is Joxer.
oh yea, i was super into xena when i was a kiddie
until it ended horribly and scarred me for life
Bruh what happened
How did it end?
I actually just had to google this bc I used to watch the show but I never saw the end--I had no idea that apparently Xena dies in the final episode?? Like yeah happy fun fantasy show about a badass warrior woman then suddenly she's fucking dead
In my headcanon, the last episode is "When Fates Collide." Cuz they get to just ride off into the sunset.
@@jprofio it's worse than just "oh she dies"
they get captured by the romans (i guess?) and theres this whole episode building up to their escape... but in the end someone breaks Xena's fucking spine, and then both her and her girlfriend get crucified in a Passion of the Christ style scene... its pretty horrifying
Bruce Campbells mustache in that Zena episode is amazing. Also, a wild Ted Raimi
Bruce Campbell without a Raimi is like a puzzle with a piece missing: still a good time, but you are keenly aware of its incompleteness.
I can't wait to see the day when Millennials and Gen Z get old enough such that we start seeing AARP ads the way we see Audible or Manscape sponsored ads in videos.
Just never thought random old vhs tapes could be so interesting until BrutalMoose came along. This man can make anything fun and interesting.
"Thanks to simplisafe, I'm Spy Kids now."
I loved that line more than I should have.
That Food Lion commercial reminded me a lot of the work of a Maine cartoonist by the name of Jeff Pert. I doubt he had any part in that commercial, but he has a very similar style.
That style was pretty popular in the 90s, iirc. The beginning credits of City Slickers had an animated cowboy that looked incredibly similar.
So glad you finally got to see Xena, Ian! The Bitter Suite is a top tier episode! 🙌🏼
My parents are friends with someone who used to play Xena at Universal in California.
John further up in the comments met her when he was 4 lmao

Oh wow I remember a lot of those commercials. This was probably the most nostalgic episode of Mystery Tapes. I love this seriesss
"Xena and her 'traveling companion' Gabrielle"
It's ok you can say "girlfriend"
Just gal pals being pals
They were never confirmed girlfriends in the show and he watched 1 episode sooo why would her say they were more than friends.
It was just something fans play with and it is fun as fan fiction and pretty common in a LOT of tv shows - but then they actually let fan fic internet "authors" write scripts for the show - almost like a gimmick - and it completely changed the trajectory and success of the show to go downhill).
it looked liked the animation from schoolhouse rock...."im just a bill on capital hill" does that ring a bell?
I love how you record these on VHS and then upload them in 4:3. Really cool thing I haven't really seen anyone else do on UA-cam.
It's also refreshing to see actual VHS quality instead of that overused Adobe Premiere plugin.
Can't replicate the same skewed sensitivity of those CCDs with just a filter... or at least without spending a lot of time tweaking it. Also the filter really overuses tracking errors and shooting blips. The naturalistic sensor noise and bad contrast is far preferable.
This is my favorite series that you have started, the editing, the actual video having 90s vibes, its amazing!! Keep up the amazing work :)
So i might be way to excited to see another upload of the vhs series, as i live for these. Thank you for gracing us with your vhs discoveries again!
Xena (and Hercules) were produced by Sam Raimi, which is why Ted Raimi (@3:18) "this guy here" and Bruce Campbell featured in it so frequently. Also one of the conmen is Patrick Fabian - Howard Hamlin from Better Call Saul.
Kevin Smith played Ares, he's in the musical episode "The Bitter Suite" that he didn't watch :)
the end card's side-by-side commercial made me laugh harder than I probably should have. overall, another banger of an episode, Ian
I could have happily gone the rest of my life without hearing that damn Big Red song again.
Boooooo! It's a classic commercial jingle!
Xena is like that because Sam Raimi was involved, the same dude behind the Spider Man movie, Drag Me to Hell and of course Evil Dead
Richmond native here, for some reason we have alot of junk yards around. There's even a nearby town called Mechanicsville.
The internet sucks so I'm always forced to watch these videos in 144p unless I wanna wait 30 minutes... but somehow it just adds to the aesthetic
Does anyone have a trick for audio syncing issues on this video? It happened to me with his last video filmed on VHS, but not any other videos.
Came back to say the issue is resolved if you watch the video in 360p instead of 1080p and now I’m like, well duh. Whoops!
@@Qcknd I was having the same problem, and went to the comments to see if anyone had the solution- I wonder why that happens

No, 10:50 looks like Ian ADR'ed over the video. The video resolution changes nothing.
As a kid, I always misheard it as “Zenon: Warrior Princess” and I thought it was a scifi show.
