I was still interested until you showed the stamina system. How in the world did they think that was a good system to add to the game?? That one stupid design decision just ruins my desire to even try this game.
Is it me or do the animations look so terrible and so jank I can't image the responsiveness is any good
D&D randomness in video games is stupid as hell: this time you rolled one and the enemy 6 so they have all million health while you do no dmg at all…. Sounds fun…
Gonna give this one a shot anyway. I agree there definitely seems to be bugs, but you got passed them so I will see if I can. Steam has a good refund policy anyway. Thing I noticed though, you felt the other classes were not worth reviewing? Also you didn't really cover the loot system just glossed over it. Talked about upgrades and exploring. Didn't show it all. Maybe there just wasn't anything to it. Anyway keep up the good work mate.

The frequent unexplained misses can also be attributed to the DM fudging dice rolls out of spite.

Sadly the D&D license has really been put through the ringer ever since Bioware stopped making D&D games. You had a couple of later diamonds in the rough like Neverwinter Nights 2 and Temple of Elemental Evil (although that game was buggier than this one at release, believe it or not). But after that, it seems like Wizards of the Coast has been happy to shovel trash like the Neverwinter MMO and Sword Coast Legends... and, of course, this abomination. For a license with so much promise and mindshare, I don't know how they keep screwing it up like this.

The first time I dm’d, I nerfed all of the enemies because I was worried that they would be “too mean” as written. As you can imagine, huge swaths of combat that was supposed to be tense were way too easy. I’ve gotten better at DMing since then.

Betas are "almost complete" games/software that are going through the final phase of testing to fix the final bugs and "iron out the kinks".
I pirate almost all games that came out. I'll buy it if I felt like they deserve it.

People do their jobs because they love it, so telling people to quit is harsh when it is their love. I feel bad for Devs- I can't think of many that aren't overworked, underpaid or pushed stupidly.
The whole game is a trainwreck, but I honestly can not stop laughing at the "animation" of firing that bow. It's easily the worst character animation I have ever seen in a major release, it looks like someone grabbed a free asset off the Unity store that was made for an Intro to Game Animation class by a high school student.
That animation is really ARPG-ish, but the game is actually a 3rd person action game so...
@@devondorr8212 Even in an ARPG that animation should be entirely unacceptable, the model is literally stationary in every bone except the arms. Goddamn hilarious.
Edit: The thing that makes this even more insane is that there are other animations *on the same character* that look fine, like the kicks and leaps in melee combat. I can't fathom why they decided to make the core default animation of the ranger basically three dynamic meshes welded to a static core (the lower torso) that each only activate based on a specific axis of movement when they clearly have at least *some* ability to animate...
@@DaenGaming I mean the rapid fire animation is fine if it were a top down game. The charge shot definitely need some upper body movement.
@@DaenGaming Given it seems to be the only one stuck like this, odds are it's because there was a bug in the targeting/firing/camera system relating to the camera model moving to they froze most of the bones to work around it. Either the bug wasn't fixed before release, or it was they forgot to turn the animation back on in the rush to release.
this animation as well as alll of the bugs mentioned, and even the ai was tweaked in full release. hes playing on a beta build and complaining like an idiot.
Removing stamina 'permanently' if the player uses one of his attacks is the stupidiest thing I've ever seen
You know you can restore your stamina for free by parrying and other methods , dnd mentions it on their trailers ..

@@josumarcu the ultimate ability restores the cap too, but it doesn't seem like they ever really used the ult as the character they were complaining about the stamina cap on.

No; It's just a very dated PC-game, while mobile-games are now at the level of like 2005-ish PC-games.
Seriously, the decent mobile games are catching up and soon enough companies like PlayStation and EA will start porting their older games to mobile, much like Rockstar did with the older GTA-games. - And it's about time, if you ask me; We have phones almost the size of small tablets now, and... well, tablets can be as powerful as a strong laptop. - I mean, move aside, shitty mobile games, the good ones are coming. - Just hook up a good gamepad and who t.f. needs a Switch anymore.

yea kinda made me mad that they didn’t make like a druid or mage class for dnd or like you said character creation which is such a core part of fnd
Except it was announced from the very beginning that this game would revolve around Drizzt and his companions. The gameplay may be garbage, but as a Drizzt fan I was really excited for this.
Dark Alliance 2 only had premade characters, but that game kicked ass and still had some build customization to it.

Imagine your game being so terrible that the enemies can't even run in a straight line at you. Don't think I've ever seen something like that, genuinely impressive!
There are many games like that . But developers with triple digit Iq would lock you in an arena before you can fight them.
i lost any hope in having fun in this game when i literally ran up to an enemy in one of the first missions, stood there waiting for his attack so i could parry, and he just never attacked and continually dodged back and taunted. didn’t attack me a single time, waited about 2 minutes and just… constant taunting and back dodging. truly upsetting.

I think this is what they tried to do, emulate normal tabletop mechanics, but some just don't translate to a 'diablo' type game.
@@AdriaanPretorius it is a bit like that and i think skillup didnt understand that. the ai isnt broken its just a different type of game. Its meant to be played on a big 4k tv too, it looks amazing and the gameplay is actually good. people should try it for themselves but get rid of the skillup noise in their heads first to give it a good go. skillup often goes into multiplats looking for problems from the get go, ahh timepoor edgelord youtbe game reviewers. skillups is one of my favourites of those but he gets it wrong consistently with multiplats... shame.

Completed the game as Barbarian and quickly learned that you could kill some smaller bosses by knocking them back into a elevated platform where they just instantly die. Also at Max level my strongest attack did 7k damage but as a level 1 Archer I did that in about two Charged heavies, not in damage numbers but in the enemies HP bar.
I feel like this was less a review, and more Skill Up doing the quality assurance the developer apparently skipped entirely. They should probably pay him for that.
Except that they didn't actually play the game and told multiple whoppers.

I underline and confirm each words said in this review. I bought this game with enthusiasm, knowing that it wouldn't be a masterpiece but a good title (a 7.5/10 hoping), instead I found it awful and technically outdated. Besides, the idea that you play alone in single-player (with no companions managed by I.A.) is amiss.
so you bought the game "knowing" it's gonna be a good game, except you didn't know and decided to purchase it before waiting for any reviews.
you're the reason games keep getting released like this, hope you make better financial decisions sometime soon.

I buy few games per generation (maybe 8-10 games only), I was fan of the franchise and that title was one of the few titles that I was interested to have. It's you that look at this like a market analysis.
Those arrow propulsions for the goblins are truly amazing; one minute they're standing around, the next thrown to space
Playing through Mass Effect 2 Legendary Edition and same occasionally happens to enemies when I headshot them with the Widow. They jump like 30 feet in the air. Seems to happen most often when theyre in cover and I pixel snipe their head
This one made me sad. We FINALLY get to play as the companions of the hall, finally get a chance to go on adventures we read so much about. Devs had like 15 amazing books full of great stories to take inspiration from. And this drab clunky unfinished mess is the result. I don't even blame the devs really. Maybe they got pressured, maybe financial troubles got to them. It's just so dissapointing either way.
Wasn't financial troubles. Wizards threw TWICE the budget that the studio quoted to them for making the game.
Just seems to me like a lack of talent with the studio, and whoever designed the characters didn't properly so research as to the character lore.
this is a game a 3 man team could put together, they had HUGE funding from WOTC, it's pure insanity the incompetence of these developers.
It's not always the studio's fault and sometimes yes it is the devs to blame, but in this case I do think it's the executives. Look at this, this clearly barely had any testing at all.
That's the crazy thing about the whole D&D IP. There are decades of carefully curated content with stacks and stacks of complex storytelling. It does the work for you yet few studios have really taken advantage of it.

DAMN IT! I knew it was gonna suck from that first trailer! At first I still was holding out some hope because the first two games were some of my favorite games on PS2. But of course, it seems like every major game company is on a mission to destroy every single one of their old franchises. Guess I'll just play the old ones again in honor of their memory. Because after this shit I'm certain the franchise is more than dead.
OG dark alliance also had old dnd style crits coded in, you were at constant fear of death in act1 from anything killing you because if they landed that crit it bypassed your defenses entirely and did an absurd multiplier of damage to you, and really that fear never dissipates. its most noticeable solo because of the similar death mechanics where if you die in a group you get back up but if you die solo you're done.
Atleast we got that fantastic trailer during The Game Awards 2019

I'll tell you the truth, this is pretty much the level of developer skill I was expecting from this game given that first trailer they released that looked like they strapped go pro cameras to the characters for some reason. It never felt like they knew what they were doing here from the beginning.

The barbarian's stamina reduction does happen, but it's only on heavy cost skills. For some reason or another. If you never even bother with those skills and just use our combos you will never seen the reduction really happen. Kinda wonky

I’d bet they added the stamina nerf for the archer because they didn’t program the enemy ai to be able handle enemies at a distance forcing you to get closer to them
But it doesn't seem like the archer class has close range attacks? I could be wrong cause I never played it but it does seem like the gameplay design here is rly bad
@@solidkwon They do. Part of how you're supposed to regain the lost stamina is by going in close and parrying attacks which refills your stamina bar. She's not really meant to be played completely from range, which is a baffling design decision in it's own way since the game already has 3 other melee characters.
@@BehindChanelGlasses Its also baffling design decision in that it makes no sense that archer has to go melee and parry, whether there are other melee characters or not.
@@BehindChanelGlasses It would make more sense if using her aoe ability (the one in a circle around her) refilled her bar, that way she could be played in a medium to close range with enemies aggroing her.
I am truly shocked the gaming industry still has not grasped the importance of a quality day 1 release.

@@fallenpanda3942 No, but you have a couple of options. Get a PS2 they are cheap.
I use a PS2 and added an SSD drive to it with tones of games although this requires a PS2 to HDMI available off amazon. -I have a few Sony Trinitrons TVs and use those for original systems... eh Pi 3 too for PS1 and older.
An original PS3 which has native support for PS2 and HDMI out, likely expensive these days.
Alternatively, use the PS2 emulator on the PC. I don't know if a Raspberry Pi 4 is powerful enough to run that. Get the games off archives or torrents.
Also, Champions of Norrath and the sequel Champions Return to Arms are really good too. All four are co-op... man good times, good memories!

You can edit face. hair. hieght..ect UNlimited after your first story ( you dont have to complete all the quest to fight the Red dragon...The game is 10 years old..Skyrim.dark soul..sort of graphic..There's alot of different vacations..what makes dragon dogma cool is...You can SCALE giant monster.during COMBAT...hang on to Griffen or dragon Tail while it's flying....Pick uP a PAWN/Allie...and TOSS them at enemies..if they suck.lmao...There's MODS and UP GRADE for P.C.....people still play it.
It's not a prefect game...but you would think game developers can make WAY better games mechanics after a DECADE..aside EYE CANDI with damn glitches.
This broken record the industry is on is getting really old. Tired of the hype train lead way to a game that is either broken or sub zero substance.
I typical avoid games that look this way. Idk how to explain it really aside from the graphics look to polished. As if they put as much work as possible to make the graphics catch your eye and forgot about everything else. To me this games graphics look exactly like outriders and anthem for example. Idk if its just me but I consider it good practice to just avoid games with polished graphics and effects until they come out or someone reviews them.
There's like no hype for this game though. Everyone online was calling out how weird the go-pro trailer was. It looks low budget and pretty much that's what most people would expect. Janky stuff that might be a hidden gem. Idk anyone who thinks this is going to be an amazing game from the weird trailers.
@@thesehandlesarefuckingstupid It’s very strange! Games that look cartoony or semi-realistic always seem to launch with very minor hiccups, whereas games that try to be as graphically powerful as possible end up being glitchy buggy messes.
Case in point: Postal 4 No Regerts has been in what it describes as “Janky Pre-Alpha” since 2020, and yet despite that the game is far more stable then any other video game on the market. Sure you’ll run into the occasional bug and glitch, but they’re so minor and unobtrusive they’re more funny then anything. And Postal 4 is not a graphically intensive game, in fact it looks like an Xbox 360/PS3 era game.
So, is a push for advanced graphics a detriment to the stability of a video game? Absolutely!

They seem to have even forgotten the art style that people loved about the older DnD games. This looks like a modern MMO dungeon.
Once I found out who published this, it hit me that this game was going to get similar treatment as licensed shovelware games. I know that Wizards is about to release a D&D inspired Magic the Gathering set, which means that the release of this game needed to coincide with the set to maximize profits. With that stringent timeline, the video game would falter the same way movie tie-in games would and corners would be cut.
The fact that there's no character customization in a *D&D* game shows how much of a misfire this thing is.
Like yeah, you are doing pregen characters technically but this should have been a dungeon crawler with custom characters.

Because they know that "gamers" will buy absolutely anything pre-order or at launch because they have the psychological marketing down so well that they can feed on people's emotions and FOMO to get them to buy-in before there is an actual viable product. They know it's bad, but it generated profit for them and that's all they wanted.

I got the feeling the moment I saw that insanely out of place trailer that the devs were going to have no respect for both the predecessors (there's nothing wrong with the combat or camera of the old games) or the source material (heavy metal and rock music in Faerun..?). Pretty interesting that it was published by Wizards considering how crazy they are about handing out their licenses.
Literally every aspect of this game screams repurposed mobile game to me.

Thats exactly what i was thinking while watching the first trailer of this game. Everything screamed "mobile game". People where offended by my comment and said to me "just wait for the release, the game will be great". And here i am, watching a review of a bad mobile game for 40$ for next gen consoles.
The resource allocation is when I really was convinced that it was a mobile game that they ported to console and PC.
D&D has a long time to catch up to Warhammer when it comes to jaw-droppingly awful video game adaptations, but this an amazing start.
there were a few "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?" level official D&D games berfore... I can't remember the name, but I swear there was a 90s arena shooter with D&D classes on top of it, and it was as unbalanced as this could be. (not to be confused with a similar bright idea someone has in mid 2000s for Shadowrun...)
Warhammer especially the 40k version tend to have better games in general. Course this more of an accuracy by volume thing if you release 20+ games at least a few are bound to come out really good.

I really wish that this game stuck more to what Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance did. Amazing hack and slash without a bunch of complicated rules and combat, eerie soundtrack and audio, and lots of blood and gore. Just cutting through endless hordes with your friends!

@@brandonrice1124 Seems like the only devs not putting out broken half baked stuff are Indies who used quarantine time as "heck yeah I can be locked in my basement and finish my game without social shaming" time, and Japanese devs that won't put out a mechanically broken game. Even Ballan Wonderland is better mechanically than this game. But on a more serious note, if you have game pass (which you should) download and play Yakuza Like a Dragon. It is easily the best thing I have played this year.

@@brandonrice1124 have you tried monster hunter at all, if not pick up literally any entry and it's an ez 300 hours. I am actually very excited for monster hunter stories 2, and Disgaea 6 next month. Those two games plus game pass will keep me happy until probably September, where we start to see some of the bigger holiday-esque releases take place.
Great video man, just wanted to point out some things that you didn't talk about that nearly sent me into a manic episode while playing this horrid game (I played on Series X so some of these may be platform specific):
1) The default x-axis camera sensitivity is so low it literally takes a full 4 seconds to turn around, and turning it up to max made it serviceable at best.
2) The problems with the lock on go much farther than the tightened camera focus. When you kill the enemy you are locked onto the lock on will snap to the next available enemy. The problem is that the camera doesn't snap with it. If the next available enemy is directly behind you, what will happen is that game will essentially simulate what would if you weren't in lock on and just manually turning the camera, and since the right stick is mapped to both x-axis camera movement and swapping lock on targets, you have to stop using the right stick altogether in order to not accidentally keep swapping targets, prolonging the period in which the camera is out of your control.
3) Going off of your comments on the animations and wind ups, you can't cancel any of them into block, step (which is useless 99% of the time), or dodge/dash, which becomes very annoying when trying to perform the combo strings the game wants you to learn.
4) Step is useless. As you stated the in game hitboxes are simply too large for step to be an even slightly viable defense mechanic, so you will find yourself spamming dodge/dash, which further burns down your stamina leaving you gassed after 20 seconds of combat.
5) The inclusion of the mvp screen after each mission is pointless because the archer will always be mvp because she doesn't have to deal with the previous four problems. Bonus annoyance the symbols for each of the characters don't render at the correct resolution so they just look mildly flattened and it somehow made it into the final product unnoticed.
Again great video man keep up the good work. Really wish this game was better.

@@SevenVT12 3 separate fully stocked dungeons with monsters, loot, and boss fights? if you need to prepare three separate levels with multiple encounters then either you're preparing way to far in advance, or you have failed to understand the whole point of deploying a dungeon in game.
As far as stamina goes, one thing I don't think you mentioned is that parrying an attack will regen your stam. That being said, it makes sense that the melee characters don't worry about stam as much because they are spending a lot of time parrying.

Love the premise for the review, of going “reverse hyperbole” to just factually describe what is going on. Great way to highlight the ridiculousness of all these fundamental flaws. One of my fav things about Ralph’s reviews: it’s never a cookie-cutter review format and in fact he often finds some truly unique way to cover a subject that fits it perfectly. It’s art, baby, and in this case way more artful than the game being covered.

I pre-installed with game pass. Thank goodness I uninstalled afterwards. Seriously! The AI looks awful. Some of the worst looking AI I've ever seen in my life. I'm awful at programming AI on games like Game Builder Garage. Better than what this game has to offer.

On solo mode, to be fair DnD tabletop or otherwise was never meant to be played solo. I am not sure why they would not add NPC team members. As a table top player I would never go up against a lich alone unless I have researched it, scouted the lair and am about 5-8 levels in power over it.
I sometimes wonder if developers watch these reviews. And what their responses would be with each complaint/complement. I'd love to hear someone try to defend a trainwreck of this magnitude

So let me get this straight... rather than code the enemies' ability to register and combat ranged opponents, they chose to completely fuck over the ranger class to dissuade you from using it and figuring out that they fucked up their game ENTIRELY and use basic attacks that completely screw the combat?
That's what they did. They ruined stamina for the ranger so you wouldn't play her and figure out that the game is broken before the steam refund window of two hours. The devs know that anyone age 7 and up can figure out their game is completely broken and demand a refund within 2 hours if they use the ranged combat. My god that level of incompetence dishonesty and corruption is staggering.
