I bought one of these brand new in 1983 when I was 26 years old, very fast and reliable and comfortable to ride. Sold it about 8 years or so later after my kids came along.
I have that exact bike; only 13,000 on it. It was new in 85, but sat indoors under a blanket from 93-94 until this past June 2017 when time came for me to have folks resurrect it. Has a few small scars, it was my first ( and still only) bike so it had a couple newb moments. I put lower rise bars on it, I didn't like the higher rise ones when I rode any distance ( traveling vs rolling around town.) I wish mine were that clean - mine's not that bad, but that one is immaculate! I've got some polishing to do this winter!
I used to have one of these. About 20 years ago. When it was about 10-15 years old itself. It was a good bike. The riding position doesn't suit everyone, but it suited me well (each to their own). Would gladly own another one.
It has a seeping head gasket. The "weird" engine noise he mentioned is the primary chain - it's what they do. I have the same bike with 90,000. They are bullet-proof if you stay up on the maintenance. But, those stock handlebars are horrid and should be changed out ASAP. Also, this bike is missing the rear grab rail Otherwise, looks to be a good bike.
Thanks for your message. This beautiful bike sold several years ago. The bike had NO unusual engine noises. But the camera we were using at the time made engines sound like they did. Just a cheapy camera with a poor microphone. We currently have another KZ750 Four if you're interested. Check out our website, then call me. www.WilliamsVintageCycle.com
kamkaotm1 I just bought the same bike with 19k miles. I hear chain noise, and very low compression. (Not mechanically tested, just obvious.) I would greatly appreciate any more info would help, or where to find info on the subject.
WunderBanana good choice. The specter is just a newer version. They literally made this engine design from late 70s thru 2002 in the zr750 i believe. I got an 81 750 e1 with a 2000 750 oil pan and oil cooler. Making parts cheap and easy to get

Great bike. I loved the long-legged first gear on these. You could pull 50 mph in 1st gear.

I wish I still had mine. I sold it to buy a GS1150. That Kawasaki was smooth and very comfortable on long rides. I miss it.

I bought this in UK for £ 1800 brand new in 1983, just looking at it and hearing it brings back great memories.
