- The students at Tristar Academy, a jr high in the middle of Illinois, sent me a list of questions about Serbia. Four of the students had specific questions about Serbian food so I made this entire video to show some of the foods here in Serbia.

Well we do eat vegetables as well, but usually it's with meat. For example pilav- it's rice and chichen meat baked in an oven, and it's a really common dish.

He who manages to properly market and mass sell ajvar globally is going to be a very, very rich man. It is almost perfect "power" food that I can see health freak go absolutely bonkers about. And it is amazingly tasty for everyone else as a universal condiment. I've seen americans in particular go totally crazy about ajvar.
And the best ajvar is from Macedonia. Fact.

That's actually the old version of our anthem, from the early 20th century, while we were still the Kingdom of Serbia (later Jugoslavia). It's pretty much the same as now, only that the part that says: (rough translation) "God of Justice, protect the Serbian king", was changed to "protect the Serbian people".
But still best version of it
it was changed into "save the serbian lands" actually
We Serbs eat salads with meat. We don't "get rid of meat and then bring salads" and "čvarci" are pork candy as we like to call them. ;)

1. Starter
2. Main dish
3. Dessert
Serbia:
1. Predjelo (starter)
2. Supa (soup)
3. Sarma (you don't translate sarma, it is sarma)
4. Pecenje (same as sarma)
5. Torta (cake)
6. Predjelo (starter). Yes, again
So basicaly 3 to 5 are main dishes and 5 and 6 are desserts
You are doing a grat job representing my country Charles. Keep up with good work. I've been following your for few years now. Just a little note, cevapi in Serbia are maid from mixed pork and beef meat, because pork meat by it self will not keep the shape after you put it on the grill. Cheers.

We also eat cooked cabbage with smoked meat, beans with smoked meat, green beans with spices, rice with onions, and carrot cooked in chicken broth, with or without chicken meat, or fish meat; bećar paprikaš or sataraš - cooked onions with tomatoes and peppers, mostly with old cheese, or eggs, fried spring onions with eggs (breakfast). There is also different kinds of pitas, with old white cheese and eggs, or spring onions, potatoes, cabbage, spinach in the homemade dough. Potatoe salad with onions, vinegar and oil with fish. Loats of soups (čorba) with veggies etc. Mac and cheese is very popular here, but with our old white cheese and milk, sometimes with ham or bacon, prosciutto.
Healthy veggie soups are very important in our kitchen.
One more month and I'm in Belgrade. The food here is killing me. I will go make a giba to get me thru.

Me being from Illinois and knowing that Illinois has one of the largest Serbian communities outside of Serbia, what Serbian restaurant in Illinois what do you think is closest to one of the best restaurants in Serbia? Like do you know of any Serbian restaurants in Illinois that gets its vegetables and meat the same way that you just talked about in this video (non-processed/very fresh)?

Chris you mentioned vegetarians, and that reminded me, perhaps you didn't been a guest on a Slava during fasting period. A good news for vegetarians is that there is also a class of food which is called "posno" and every respectful Orthodox Christian is supposed to eat only posna hrana on each day during several weeks preceding Julian calendar Christmas, and preceding Easter too, as well as some long fasts in the summertime, and regardless of that also on each Wednesday and Friday. Posna hrana excludes any meat, eggs, dairy, ... etc. except fish, so it is mostly plant based.
4 course meals are common just on a big celebrations such as slava's (individual,serbian ortodox hous, saint day celebrations),huge birthday's, weddings, family sunday lunch,special occasions etc.....
Svargla, pihtije, they come with the age lol You should be good with them, in a winter time it's great. Leskovacka pljeskavica is veal meat though... All the best, love seeing your videos

Rostilj is a grill, pljeskavica is a grilled burger, basically but a bit different, cevapi are basically a pleskavica in a different shape

kljaja998 you didnt ask me but out of american food I liked gravy, bisquits, cornbread and beef stew. may be Charles should say couple of words about it. and yeah, of course... I forgot the pancakes, pancakes with maple syrup is what Serbs would looove for breakfast... pancakes are not palacinke but are made out of similar stuff. bisquits are like pogacice, gravy is kind of breakfast sauce, cornbread is kind of like proja w/o cheese and beef stew is basically beef carrots and maybe onions and is just as delicious as the food can be. pozdrav svima :)

For a moment I can remember three dishes You miss to put in the video and them absolutely deserve the place in...PIHTIJE, SVADBARSKI KUPUS, KUVANA KOLJNICA SA KISELIM KUPUSOM I PREBRANCEM....mmmmm yamm
I don't know if you tried our food made during fasting period. Those are very tastefull also, and most of it is suitable for vegetarians. Fish and fish soup are prepared for slava mostly during fasting, but all other food are of plants. There are no egg, milk or milk products or meat. Now, there are some restorans that make this kind of food also.

We have a lots if Vegan abd vegeteranian, too. I don't eat meat a lot....more vegetables and fruit. Today, I cook filled pepper with potatoe, onion, carrots and tomatoe.....punjena paprika 😜
Don't worry about seasoned Serbian Croatian and Italian ham fat is healthy like olive oil. great video very informative love your content Charles !!!!!!!!!(-;
One more tasty thing we eat here, but mainly in Vojvodina iz kozura, solted pork skin, only if you are there when pigs are slaughtered you can eat it, afterwards it is only for pasulj(beans)

you should come to Vojvodina to try Vojvodina's food... Mixed Balkan and Serbian food whit Hungarian , Slovak, Romanian , German and other food... Nedeljni rucak u Vojvodini... together Cevapi i slanina i gulas i paprikas and lot other good thinks
