"terroni" became a word to identify this people in a bad meaning. At that time, in some part of northern italy, there were signs outside shops and bars reading: "no dogs and 'terroni' allowed here". Now "terroni" does not have anymore a meaning strictly related to the region of birth, it has more a mening of a person who do not know how to behave in a polite way. Nontheless in the north it is used to identify southern born people but mostly as a joke. Sorry for my bad english ;)

As somebody from near Naples, I just want to say that lots of us feel the same about Eastern Europe, especially Croatia. I've visited most of the countries and I'm amazed at all the cultures but also the similarities we share. Like gifting coffee and sugar to mourning families at funerals.
Terroni basically derived from "terra", land in English. When industrialization happened in Italy (mostly in Northern Italy) the South remained mostly agricultural, and in a certain way still stuck by the land as was in the medieval ages. It becames an insult when a lot of people from the south moved to the north to work, as the southern where considered rough and uncultured.

My first/only trip to Europe as of now has been a two week stay in the area of Apulia in the heel of Italy. It was the absolute best and I've been dying to go back ever since. We rented a car and drove everywhere which was great. Started in Lecce, then Brindisi, Ostuni, Alberobello, Matera, and finally Bari as well as checking out multiple beautiful beaches along the way. No tours, just driving and exploring everything at your own pace, I gotta say was the way to go.

My first/only trip to Europe as of now has been a two week stay in the area of Apulia in the heel of Italy. It was the absolute best and I've been dying to go back ever since. We rented a car and drove everywhere which was great. Started in Lecce, then Brindisi, Ostuni, Alberobello, Matera, and finally Bari as well as checking out multiple beautiful beaches along the way. No tours, just driving and exploring everything at your own pace, I gotta say was the way to go.

My parents who are the children of Italian and Sicilian emigrants to the United States of America were so adamant about becoming Americanized that they shared very little of Italy and Sicily as well as their parents' histories. What I learned about Italy and Sicily came mostly from books and videos, and not my parents. Even so I am loyal to Italy, Sicily, and the United States, Michigan and California in particular since the former is where I was born and the latter is where I was raised. Viva Italia! Viva Sicilia!
