    There would have been nothing more meaningless than a cliché happy ending, where Max and Jackie would run off together. Tarantino deliberately leaves the audience 'yearning', and this longing, that remains unfulfilled, is after all a big part of love. There is a German word which perfectly captures this feeling, 'Sehnsucht', which literally means 'addiction to longing'. It is about the longing for an unfulfilled ideal. In romantic poetry, this longing is paradoxically a desirable feeling in and of itself. It is being lovesick or dreaming about 'what could be', yet the painful dream is in a sense more much more beautiful than the ideal actually being fulfilled.

    the shot of Robert Forster walking away down the hall is one of the most powerful, not only in Tarantino's cinema, but in contemporary cinema. Max Cherry breaks down the stoicism that he has shown throughout the story and with a broken heart, he makes a gesture with his arms, crossing them with his back to the camera while the camera lens blurs, as if they were the eyes full of tears of Jackie. situationally reverses the first meeting between them, when Jackie approached Max from his point of view. now it is she who seems to watch as he walks away from her. the next (and last) close-up of Jackie corroborates that.

    I have seen this movie so many times, but it was not until today I realized that Max changed his mind at the end and went after Jackie. The very last shots of Max in his office get slowly blurred out of focus. The we see Jackie in her car and there is a blurred blue car behind her. This is Max's car - it is the same color. The blurring is the clue.

    • @cvt8353
      @cvt8353 3 роки тому +29

      @@jamesbracy2368 Thanks! I also found a second clue in the song itself. I always wondered why Tarantino chose "Across the 110th Street" - such a New York song in this L.A movie. Then I realized that it symbolizes walking into danger, as Harlem was a very dangerous place in the 70s. The song plays in the beginning when Jackie is walking into the hands of the agents. But why is it also playing in this scene at the end, and who does it apply to? It definitely doesn't apply to Jackie now - she is just going to Europe. Then it must apply to Max, who is a little afraid of Jackie by his own admission. This time he is the one going across the 110th street by going after her.

    I have maintained for years that Jackie Brown is the best directing Tarantino's done. He gets such beautiful, vivid, powerful performances out of everyone, from Greer and Forster to Jackson, De Niro (who, by the way, I have to give props to for playing a dumb guy - not someone mentally handicapped, just basically a dumb guy), Fonda, Keaton... Hell, even Chris Tucker uses his powers of annoyance for good. And the writing is phenomenal as well, but it's like he just turned the burner down to a slow boil and let things take their time and really blend. And that includes the cinematography.

    I’ve seen all Quentin’s movies at least a dozen times (only twice so far for once upon a time but that’s cause it’s brand new). Through it all, this is my favorite. Pulp fiction has strong cinematic moments, inglorious bastards and django are epics. Kill bill, reservoir dogs and hateful eight have some of the strongest characters. And for what it’s worth, I still like Death Proof. But the balance, the pathos, the depth, the resonance, the feel, the maturity, and the sheer force that is Jackie brown can not be understated. It is truly a master’s masterpiece.

      +Talisguy Excellent argument! Really spot on points which most people ought to recognize if they've been paying closer attention to Tarantino's career trajectory (curiously, Jackie Brown is probably the one QT film most people will not have seen, so it might be hard to demonstrate what the underlying issue here is). I caught up with QT's early films as a teenager, a bit before Kill Bill vol. 1 hit the big screen, and remember feeling comparatively disillusioned by the subsequent KB double feature...but I ultimately shrugged off the nagging sensation due to being an avid Tarantino fanboy around the time.
      Yet his subsequent films would keep evoking that same disconcerting quality, and only recently have I come to re-assess (with a helping nudge from British film critic Mark Kermode) that I did not in fact enjoy e.g. Inglourious or Death Proof nearly as much as I initially thought. Granted, QT is still great at pulling off memorable set pieces, but none of his recent efforts can hold a candle to the complex yet sensibly reined in storytelling in Jackie Brown, which I also consider his best film by a considerable margin. For one thing, it's the only QT film I feel I can watch at any given time without any reservations of being in the ideal mindset: beautiful soundtrack, phenomenal lead by Pam Grier supported by a terrific ensemble cast (I hope Robert Forster was not overlooked in the critical praise), and genuine story about genuine people with genuine anxieties in life. I highly doubt I'll ever feel that way about say Django Unchained.
      But at the same time here's to hoping QT's got at least one more masterpiece up his sleeve, somewhere in the not-so-distant future.

      +Talisguy Great points again, I looked up the Oscar nominations for the year and couldn't help pursing my lips at some of the choices, e.g. Titanic receiving two separate female nominations for Rose's character (Kate Winslet and Gloria Stuart). But then I keep reminding myself that the actual significance of the Academy Awards is very much open to debate :) In any case totally agree with the shout-outs you mentioned: watched JB for the 5th-6th time a while back, and was perhaps for the first time totally absorbed by Fonda's performance. Seems like in every re-watch I discover a new favorite performance, sublime acting all the way!

      +Bashir Kashmiri As he well should have regretted it, It's not an every day occurrence That an African-American woman, a Black woman in America will offer A White Man the opportunity to share any extra time together AFTER the deal is done and he has been paid, but when she offered more money he turned it down and then she offered the ULTIMATE he turned that down. so she called him on "fear" . and he was honest , I believe that it was in that moment he gained entry to her heart for real.. she's going to give him time but it would surprise me none if later on down the road he would receiving more than a card..and i .betcha this time he won't say no !!

    The last shot is SUCH beautiful characterisation. The fact that Jackie knows the words to the song, suggests she’s sung it tons of times, yet she only starts miming to the verse that relates to HER life; she’s been dealing with pimps all her life; had to break out; likely had a drug problem in her younger days. It says so much without her saying anything!

    Jackie Brown is one of the most underrated QT films. I used to love The Bride, but many have compared it "to a revenge rape fantasy," but have grown to appreciate Jackie Brown more. Jackie is your average woman, much older, and a person of color that is caught in circumstances done in by men-her husbands actions, Ordells and the ATF. It is in the moment of desperation she displays her worth by standing up for herself by controlling the narrative and directing the men how to do each other in. The tragedy is that she found a man who truly loves her, saw her humanity, but knows true love is a very fragile thing and it was best to leave it alone.

    The most beautiful part of this ending is that throughout the movie you see Jackie as a strong cold woman, and you can’t help but wonder, is she faking it? Or is she really this calculated, manipulative gangster with a thirst for power? There were moments where her vulnerable side and fears would seep out ever so slightly, but she’d quickly bump right back. Then when this song plays at the end it simply reveals EVERYTHING we were wondering about her and what she had gone through… what a beautiful, tragic and clever way of giving the audience the answers to the character’s past and reasons for why she did what she did. Incredible.
