    One of the best title sequences in the history of film. The way the title card pops up right when the chorus kicks in gives me chills every time. Then the way the film is bookended by Across 110th Street playing at the end when Jackie drives away and even sings it to herself is so perfect.

      The music in this film plays a very integral role as almost a background character of many scenes. Tarantino utilized the music here as a dynamic way to address scenes. I am ALWAYS floored by when Tarantino introduces Ordell (Sam Jackson's character) as a killer when he frequently plays music in his car before he goes to do his business, starting with the Brothers Johnson "Strawberry Letter 23." It is SO CHILLING.

      Back when 'Jackie Brown' was released, I went to see it in the cinema with a couple of friends I (as a queer, 20 something white, Welsh guy) watched this opening scene. When I saw Pam Grier gliding along on the traveletor to 'Across 110th Street', so poised, so elegant, so kick-ass, yet so relatable. I was transfixed, it is almost like I felt like I wanted to BE her. From start to finish, watching this film, she was the epitome of a strong female. I remember coming out of the cinema and literally walking down the street (with that track in my head) in time to the music, holding my head high. She became a MAJOR inspiration to me from that moment.

    Pam Grier (and Tarantino) did a hell of a lot more in this movie than most people do today who eventually win Oscars. It is a great shame this was not recognized other than the wonderful Forester performance. It's such a great, involved film that you actually have to pay attention to to appreciate. It's hard to have anyone watch an entire movie nowadays...speaking as a film professor...students by and large do not want to watch and learn. It's incredibly sad

      I'm still gobsmacked that few people seem to have seen Jackie Brown and fewer still like it. When it first came out I considered it to be a titan equal to Pulp Fiction and, quite frankly, I've always liked it better. Everything in this film is fantastic and I have no idea how - a quarter century later - it hasn't yet been popularly reappraised as the absolute masterpiece that it is.

  • @MiketheratguyMultimedia
    @MiketheratguyMultimedia 9 місяців тому +11

    This is such an amazing opening. The subtle power of Jackie's personality when the music picks up and the shot goes wide to show her strutting past the magazine stores, that awesome lucky sudden reveal of the plane traveling parallel to her outside the window. It's been 25 years, this movie is overdue for proper recognition.

    This intro is a masterpiece in itself. No comparison to The Graduate (great film though). Celebrating Pam Grier, elegant foreshadowing (confidence, struggle, victory), perfect music. The dynamic curve (the approach is not that easy after all), when the camera is behind Jackie. A hint of stress in the colleague's face. Then Jackie's back: relief, sovereignty regained. Brilliant.

  • @sleuthentertainment5872

    The actress appears, she is standing there, led by a conveyor belt, but her inner fire shakes and burns the screen, and what Bobby Womack sings, in his own way, tells the past of the character and also the actress ("Doing whatever I had to do to survive, I'm not saying what I did was alright, tryna break out of the ghetto was a day to day fight") and figures out future events ("Hey brother, there's a better way out, snorting that coke, shooting that dope, man, you're copping out! Take my advice, it's either live or die, you've got to be strong if you wanna survive...").
    We literally go "across 110th Street" from the heart and soul of Grier/Brown.
    We are inside it, because this is her story and no one else's.

    It's a great visual homage to "The Graduate" that also works on a thematic level for the film itself. Just like Benjamin, Jackie's aimless though she's in an even worse spot given she doesn't have as much of her life still ahead of her and isn't part of affluent social circles like Benjamin.
    Jackie is working a dead-end job paying $16k a year with shit retirement benefits on a fast track to nowhere, trafficking money for an arms dealer who would shoot her dead on the first hint of trouble.
    Throw in another layer with the incredibly vivid Womack track and you have, in my opinion, one of the greatest openings in cinematic history.
