PANIGALE V2 vs V4 COMPARISON | Which one should you buy?

  • From an owners perspective, we compare the Panigale V2 to the V4. I first purchased my Panigale V2 in the spring of 2021 and recently purchased a V4 this summer in 2024. During my ownership I've been able to use both in various environments and conditions. Both the V2 and V4 have been through various stages of modification and stages of maintenance.
    The V2 is often considered the practical Panigale and the one you want if you are planning to use it for normal transportation. However, in this video we discuss how the V4 and V2 are quite similar when being used within the context of normal transportation.

    Yes, this video is helpful. I put a downpayment on a V2 because I really like narrow bikes and I come from the 888 era, plus I have Hyperrmotard 950SP. You answered some items that were in and out of my thinking. I'm a twisties sort, and my freeway/straight riding is minimal. I think that the Hyper/V2 combo is going to suit me (plus a Grom!). You side-by-side comparison is welcome.

      Awesome. So glad this video was helpful to guide your decision. You won’t be disappointed with the V2. It feels like a much smaller bike than it really is. Whenever somebody rides the V2, the first thing they say comment on is how light and small it feels. Appreciate the support, take care. 👊🏽.

    Aside from similar low-end torgue, there is also a noticeable difference riding the V4s versus the V4, mainly the shock factory setting is very stiff, if you hit a pothole doing 80mph it can eject you 2 ft in the air, but on V4S it absorbs it in realtime.

    The power on the V4 is addictive. Had a chance to ride my buddies V2 and wanting more power out of it. When i got back on my V4S i was grinning. It all depends how you want to ride your bike i guess. As for me the V4 is the bike for me.

    • @ridewithKY

      If you think the power of a Pani V4 is addictive, you should try an RSV4. There's no waiting for power on an RSV4.

    • @ridewithKY
      @ridewithKY  2 місяці тому +2

      Tough choice between the two. Either one is totally fine for everyday riding. The V4 is slightly less friendly for daily riding mostly because of how wide it is. It feels a little more cumbersome at low speed. The magic of the V2 is it literally feels like riding a small bike, like a 600, but it’s really a 900. The V4 doesn’t let you forget it’s a liter bike.

  • @graham5318

    Nice review based on real experience....not specs or speculation. Still love how slim that V2 looks. Would you consider doing at -1 tooth front sprocket on the V2 to improve low speed smoothness / tractability ? Makes a very noticeable difference on a 600cc bike.

      Appreciate the support, thank you! Yeah the SF V2 and SF V4 are going to be similar in comparison. The SF V2 is very narrow and feels very light whereas the SF V4 is pretty wide and feels heavier even though on paper they are about the same weight. Going to either option is going to be a big change for you because both V2 and V4 are not very strong down low. Your Rocket 3R is the complete opposite in that its torque can turn the earth but doesn't have the top end of a V2 and especially a V4. The top end on a V4 is insane. Cheers sir.

    Have you even taken the v4 to redline? I agree you do what you want with your bike but many people say its meant for the track if you use the whole powerband as a purpose built bike. I think its too much for the street to use the whole powerband is what people meant. You get 150mph quick in 3rd gear or short shift to 4th. As much as I love the bike It gets more enjoyable to dip into long turns and wringing it out.. Again not for streets its just too fast to use the whole power.

    • @ridewithKY
      @ridewithKY  3 місяці тому +2

      I have. There are a lot of tracks you can't use the whole powerband, so what then? Furthermore, these bikes have lights, a number plate bracket, mirrors, and a catalytic converter; their primary purpose is a street application.
      In your example of ringing out 3rd gear, let's look at the V2. If you wind out 3rd gear completely, you'll be going approximately 120-125 mph? In a legal context and safety context, is there really a difference between 125 mph on the V2 versus 150 mph on the V4? I don't think so. I'm not here to tell anybody what to do with the speed of their bike, that's between them and law enforcement. At least here in California, there is no difference legally between going 125 mph and 150 mph. It's exhibition of speed in both scenarios. You are taking a big risk legally and with safety in either case.
      The context of the video was both of these bikes behavior in a street application, being used as transportation. After all, that's what both of these bikes are; transportation. Top end speed goes without saying, it's 210 hp versus 155 hp, not that hard to figure that part out. Take care man, ride safe.

    did you do Bt tune for your V4? Is it cooler afterwards? Does the bike feel a lot better.
    I have both. Between the two the only real downside of the V4 is the heat.
    Coming from a non Ducati, the V2 will feel warm, the warmth is a bit annoying, and that’s it. If you go 70mph for 2 min the bike will cool down. But a V4, the heat is unbearable in the city. You have to go 110mph+ for a long while before the bike starts to cool down.
    V4 is smoother, v2 has way more vibration. My V4S fully fueled with full mods weighs 431lb. The V2 almost stock is 450lb+.
    After riding V4 and getting used to shift around 13k rpm, going to a v2 I kept hitting the limiter before shifting lol.
    I swear to god the v2 stock exhaust is louder than v4 stock exhaust lol. Just how I feel. Tho after ak exhaust on the v4 it is louder.

    • @ridewithKY
      @ridewithKY  3 місяці тому

      The V4 has an upmap, the V2 has a BT. Both were significantly cooler after the exhaust and flash. It is night and day.
      I would say there's not much difference vibration wise between the V4 and V2. You'd think the V4 would be a lot smoother, but both engines are really not that smooth compared to the competition.
      As far as the stock exhaust goes, valves closed they are both pretty similar in volume, which is quiet. With the valves open, the V4 is a lot louder. I've got some videos on this, V4 is significantly louder.
      Take care man.

    • @jiajianhou426
      @jiajianhou426 3 місяці тому

      @@ridewithKY yeah compare to inline 4, the V4 still has more vibrations. Tho I did not feel the bike is cooler after upmap with the ak exhaust. Maybe the T800 upmap actually does something to reduce the heat.

    Great video! I'm on the fence as a 47 year old man coming from a Buell 1125R that I sold 10 years ago. What are your thoughts of me moving up to the V4? Also, how tall are you? I am 5'8 and sat on one at the local dealer here in Dallas. I couldn't quite flat foot it, but could get my front feet to the ground.

    • @ridewithKY
      @ridewithKY  3 місяці тому +1

      I suppose it depends on what you are looking for. I have exactly zero experience with a Buell 1125R, but I would assume that bike was pretty brutal. These current V4's are pretty tame around town. Goes without saying; you better be holding on when you hit powerband though. I am 5'5" so these V4's are a struggle for me. It's one foot tippy toe in my case. V4's get a bad reputation for being too aggressive to use for normal transportation, but it's just not true. It's tame when you want it to be and a WSBK if you want to get brave. Amazing machines these Ducati's.

      Hey! I’m your age and just bought a V4 SP2 from AMS Ducati in May. One thing… I’m 5’9” and I wouldn’t want to be any shorter and ride the V4. I’m used to it now, but I don’t like that I can’t flat foot it. V2 is much better from that aspect. Also, V4 power is just insane. Like literally too much for even the track. I’m seriously thinking about picking up a V2 just for the track.

      This information is incorrect. Both the V2 and V4 use a wet clutch, which does not need any more maintenance than any other wet clutch. When we talk about dry clutches and Ducati’s there are some nuances there as well. The current gen V4R uses a very small diameter dry clutch which has a shorter interval than the larger diameter dry clutch found on the older V4R and the SP/SP2.
