    My dad and I just got our 1989 5.9l d150 to run after about 20 years, it isn't a bad truck at all. He was talking about how the tailgate on these trucks never work too, lol. Best first barn find for me yet.

    81 to 90 only, these are just cool. If you want cheap buy a Chevy or maybe a Ford but if you are in to cool and looks, these are the ultimate. So easy to work on, you only need COMMON SENSE! Way fun to drive!

    The tailgate on my old 1977 D200 Adventurer still looks and works like new. I've seen loads of old Chevys of similar vintage with damaged/broken/rusted tailgates, and countless rust problems. The upside to the old square body Chevys was cheap parts and a car like ride.

      The Dodge M880 is a 1-1/4 ton truck that was used by the US military in the 1970s. It was a lightly modified version of the civilian Dodge W200 pickup truck. The M880 was designed for non-combat roles, such as logistics and supply transportation. Mopar!

    Driving a 93' D150 with a 318 that has lived its whole life in Ohio. The body is beyond shot, but it has over 230,000 miles runs like new. I put roughly 500 miles a week on the truck. Everything from the A/C to the tape deck works like it should. If you take the grille off, and remove every bolt you find on the fender it will come off by itself. Reason the 80's to even the 2nd gen trucks rot out so bad is because cheap Mexican steel was used for the bodies. The 70's and earlier trucks used heavier galvanized steel so they hold up much better. Location affects the bodies of course though. Road salt will kill any truck. Lastly the reason parts are harder to find is simply they didn't sell as well as Ford or GM trucks, so the aftermarket support didn't stay with them. The Cummins is what saved the Ram truck line from being shut down entirely by Chrysler. Was actually Lee Iacocca's idea after seeing the Rams had only about 5% of the truck market in sales.

    In order to get the driver side fender off you'll need to remove the front grill and the front windshield washer assembly and then take pit about 30 screws. Might need to take off the battery mount too. That's what I had to do on my 1991 dodge w150

    The fenders are extremely well bolted down compared to their counterparts, but they're "bolt on" fenders. Other than the one upper bolt hidden under the cowl, the two inside the door jam, and the ones behind the grill, all of the upper and lower bolts are in plain sight.

    Spot on review, but don't dog the D/W series Ram just for the lack of AC on your unit. AC was an option and works well on the trucks that have it. But you're definitely right about not going for these anymore. People liked them because they were tough, reliable, no-frills, and dirt cheap. Ever since right about 2020 they took off as classic trucks, and they're no longer cheap. You can get a fully equipped 2nd or 3rd gen now for the same price as a 1st gen. So, unless you're going for nostalgia, there are better options.

    Just fyi, the 1st gen Ram body style was 1981 to 1993. The Cummins wasn't an option until 1989, which is why the strictly diesel guys claim that a "1st Gen" is 1989 - 1993.

    So I have a 1990 dodge ram d150 and it’s a 5.2L and I found out it has 3.9L throttle body and injectors in it if I just change the fuel injectors should that fix the issues or would I have to change whole throttle body. Because it will struggle to stay on and acts like it’s not getting enough gas and I’ve replaced just about everything.

    • @TheHaughtyOsprey
      @TheHaughtyOsprey 3 місяці тому

      I have a 1990 D150 with the 3.9 and I absolutely love it. I live in a farming community in North Florida, and Ol BLUE gets nods of approval and compliments all the time. Im building a wooden flatbed for it, sanding and pri ing all the rust spots to put bedliner on the cab, hood, and front panels. It cranks right up no matter hoe cold (Florida cold, mind you) it gets. Over the next year I'm gonna replace the suspension, get new guys for th3 doors so the windows go up and down without needing a lefting belt to turn the handles, and a few other small things. I have a feeling my grandkids will be able to drive this thing (oldest son is 18 now, and I hope he waits a while to make me a grandpa) when they're old enough to drive.

  • @Scaff42
    @Scaff42 2 роки тому +3

    Wow, really! I own all three make Dodge, Ford, and Chevrolet they all do the same things because they are machines made by people. On my Chevy, the gas gauge doesn't move until I'm at a quarter of a tank and when the odometer hits three hundred twenty-five miles I'm out of gas. Not to mention the parasitic draw on the battery, oh ya how about when the car is running fine in town but when I get on the highway it falls on its face. Now my Ford When the steering column isn't falling apart the engine is blowing spark plugs out of the heads, or the front wheels fall off because of a bad hub design. Now for my Dodge, it's not perfect because of the lack of horsepower. But at the same time the torque makes up for that, can you say stump puller, (my Ford couldn't touch it). Now on to the chronic problem of eating clutches no matter what clutch I put in it or how many times I adjust it. Now to your issue with tailgates. I've experienced the same issue with Fords and Chevys. At least Dodge makes it so they can be unlatched if the handle breaks. My 1981 Dodge has over two hundred thousand miles and still runs better than the other two. And you don't want to get me started about my Oldsmobile. The generation of Dodge truck you are referring to is actually the fourth generation in the series of D models, now if it had a Cummins engine it would be classified as a first-generation Dodge Cumins truck. When it's actually the fourth generation truck and first-generation Cummins engine. Sorry, it just annoys me when someone calls a nonCummins Dodge truck a first-gen when it's not. I blame spending twenty years in the Military for my issues with being a stickler to detail. I like your vlog so far. My Grandfather had his 1978 Dodge W150 close to one million miles. That truck was a work truck for his construction company. The only reason he got rid of it what because he drove it until it literally fell apart. When he finally got a new truck it was for a 1989 Dodge W250 Cummins. Rust issues affect all vehicles out east or any state that uses salt on the roads. My truck has lasted so long is because it from New Mexico. Now you are entitled to your opinion, I know I'll never get rid of my Dodge because it's a workhorse even with its issues, in fact, I bought a 1985 D250 crew cab long bed dually and am restoring it and may convert it to four-wheel drive.

    It's always entertaining to listen to someone who thinks they know it all, but you know that everything they are saying is wrong.
    Dodge was the best truck of that era.
    I worked for someone back then who was strictly a ford guy. He ended up buying a Dodge to plow snow with because no one else made a 3/4 ton with a solid front axle.
    Now days, all makes are the same shit boxes that pick up groceries and take kids to soccer games, but couldn't hold up to a real day of hard work.

    It's not a first gen. First generation is for the diesels in that body style from 1989-1993 not the gas versions which they went from 1981-1993.

      @@GrumpyMonkeyGarage Funny. I drive a 1977 w200 every day in upstate NY and I never see any Chevys even close to that vintage in the winter time especially. Probably because there either in the junkyard where they belong or just weekend garage queen's.

    listening to you whine about how you don't like Mopar and the lack of features on a 30 year old base model truck is cringy and annoying.

      I'm comparing it to other 30 year old trucks, like our 1989 F150 we reviewed. Literally the same year
