Seems like most of the water from waves over the bow channels down into the Drive well when I demo’ed a new Outback last weekend. Also thinking the resale value/market will still hold for the older Outbacks too, since there is a place for both. Nice surf test!!
Looking to get a Hobie. Out of curiosity how do you feel the pro angler 12 would have compared in those same conditions, negatives and positives?? Thanks in advance.
I am thinking of getting one of these. I have a sit on top feel free but it has nice scupper holes so it is rare to get water in that needs removal because it drains right out. the worse is some water comes up with the wave through the hole to splash you but it's not much and goes right out. does this one have anything like that?
Surprisingly coming back through the surf was uneventful. That kayak just glides through and tracks straight. I didnt get kicked sideways at all. Took on a decent amount of water just due to the low deck height but nothing too crazy.
I just attach these bad boys to the H-rail: www.austinkayak.com/products/16225/Hobie-H-Rail-Horizontal-Rod-Rack.html?Shopping:%2520ACK%2520PLA&adpos=1o3&scid=scplp16225_14106_1&sc_intid=16225_14106_1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAlIXfBRCpARIsAKvManwaZXU0NUMvsa2HrycuLFQ_pa6b4XioAQl_T7LQDPMvBzmp324znxYaAjKYEALw_wcB
I thought the same thing but it was actually flawless. I didn't get kicked sideways or anything. My SD cards filled up on the water so I didn't get any footage of it.
The outback is a tank offshore. This review well intended as it may be does not even come close to showing what an outback can handle even on red flag days!
@@NorthernKayakAngler I think the 2019 can certainly handle the waves but it is not a super dry kayak so that cold lake water may be rough. But if you wear waders you'll be good to go!
I will keep my old 2012 Outback, don't care for the bow and low sides of the new Outback, and since their patent ran out on the mirage drive they need to lower the price way to much money.
how was it coming in , i flip mine twice but i am a newbie and it was a first time ever on any kayak too , the bow dived in the breaker and i fliped it, i used to surf alot so i was riding the wave bad idea. PLEASE give me tips , i did look at reverse landing , going in backwards
It's all about timing it in the wave sets. You want to land under your own power instead of letting the waves push you in. I personally peddle in until I'm waist deep and I jump out or pull my drive and rudder up
its definitely better than the pro angler in regards to surf landing. I can't accurately compare it to many other kayaks but I don't think you should sell it just yet. give it time, get on the water as much as possible, maybe even go practice surf passage without rods or other gear just to get the hang of it. Believe me, you have arguably the best fishing kayak on the market.
By definition this is surf. It is certainly enough to flip a kayak therefore justifies a review of this particular boat. You are not the first person to say this isn’t surf so it makes your comment pretty redundant itself. Thanks for the valuable input tho 👍🏼
Those waves are nothing compared to what that beast of a kayak can do. In full on surf the Hobie punches nicely through even when it is so big that you have solid water punching you in the face. Way harder to ride it back in though as a fully loaded Outback is definitely not a surf kayak. You have to balance the surf back to shore perfectly when this beast picks up speed and it self rights itself against the normal of the wave making it really hard to "skid" if you end up with the break to your side. Full speed straight out with the Mirage - On the back in I only use the paddle with retracted rudder and stashed Mirage drive.
I am about to get my first hobie. Glad this video is near where I live

Absolutely, the kayak does a good job of self-draining.

Southern California waves to get thru even on a small day can be 2,3,4ft
why not show us how you came back in through that surf??? and just wondering how much water you took on???

What do you use to store your rods when your going through the surf? Getting a 2019 outback and looking for ways to protect my rods. Thank you.

that was cool you found someone to trade kayaks with you on the way in LOL
Haha you caught me, I had some old clips I wanted to get rid of on my SD card. Good eye!
Definitely a wetter launch but I think the other positives outweigh this negative by far! Thanks for the video.
I agree. I love this kayak.
How did it do coming back in? I'm thinking with that PA style stearn it's going to be tricky
I thought the same thing but it was actually flawless. I didn't get kicked sideways or anything. My SD cards filled up on the water so I didn't get any footage of it.
That's good!

I agree completely.

Northern Angler: Kayaking and Ice Fishing I’d keep the 16 imo.
AG Coarseman good point lol just stay warm/dry
AG Coarseman haha not just wet and dead but very wet and VERY dead

They keep changing it every year. They will most likely change the patent also
The video from the beach as it was going through the surf makes this yak look big. Gonna make the PA 12 obsolete.
We wear drysuits kayaking in the ocean here in WA even if the air temp is in the 90's.
Those *_-E X T R A T H I C C-_* tires tho **lenny face**
Did the floor hatch stay dry?
Yep no water got in the hatch
Nice vid but I'll keep using my Adventure Island for this sort of fishing!
Taking water in the hull with it crashing over?
Surprisingly, no. At the end of that day I had a very small amount of water in the hull. The seal in the hatch is really tight and the lip is tall
Damn thumbing that braid line ever cut your thumb?
Not if you build up those bass thumb callouses! Lol
Definitely buying a 2019 outback now. First trip is pensacola.. thanks man
Good choice

thanks , But did you find it a pretty good kayak for landing the New Outback vs the Pro kayak and the other kayak out there, or should i sell it

Cheers mate for your time , the surf in NC Hatteras can be a pain in the ass . Hope to catch some monsters
Absolutely, good luck Man!
though it was sometimes fun fishing on my 2016 outback man it was bitch putting it on top of my suv after a long days of kayaking.
Hello Friend , ? honestly which kayak is better 2019 or 2018 Outback
Juan Enrique pesca and fishing ?
Thought I recognized Pensacola beach.
Surf? lol... that massive 12 inch wave!
Sorry guys but that's not surf. Really, its not. So it makes the "surf test" somewhat redundant.
