Fishman Fluence Modern Pickups Installed in Jackson JS22-7 7-String + Recorded Some Riffs

  • I installed $230 Fishman Fluence Modern pickups in a $200 Jackson Dinky JS22-7 7-String guitar and then wrote and recorded some riffs with it.
    I put everything in a nice little video with some background music I also composed.
    Here is the link to the wiring diagram for the Fishman Fluence Modern Pickups - tinyurl.com/4nfrj6f5
    Notes: Installed with 1 volume knob, 1 tone knob (both included with the pickups), no HF Tilt, and reused Jackson stock 3-way switch
    It's been a fun project! Enjoy! Thanks for watching!

      Glad it was helpful!
      You are correct, the pickups I purchased had the Black Nickel metallic finish, which is indeed glossy. (it's not a protective film)
      Now that you pointed that out, I can see how that might stand out against the matte, satin finish of the guitar. They also come in a flat black plastic finish if you don't like the glossy look. Looking at the site they also have Brushed Stainless, White Plastic, and metallic Nickel as well! I didn't actually know that when I bought these lol

    It constantly drains the batteries. They last for about 3 days until sound starts to cut and then it's gone. Like the circuit is not closed after the cable gets unplugged. No idea what to do anymore. Maybe the stock 3 way blade switch needs to be changed since on diagram i noticed it's the different one, with different poles.

    • @Dgsterx
      @Dgsterx  10 місяців тому

      @AndreasKnutsen Hi there! I had no problem fitting the battery in the back cutout. However, this guitar only has 2 pots (1 Tone, 1 Volume) and the switch. If you've got a 3rd pot it may be a little tighter but it can be done.
      I have EMGs with a battery in my Ibanez RG, but that one also only has 2 pots.i think you should be able to make it fit, just be sure to wrap it with electrical tape or some other nonconductive material for electrical protection.
      The rechargeable batteries look cool, but I've never used one so I have no idea how they fit

    I was thinking about getting them for my dot studio, it's a semihollow body though. I don't know if that'd make a difference

    • @Dgsterx
      @Dgsterx  Рік тому +1

      I've never worked on a hollow-body guitar before, but based on the picture below it doesn't seem like it would be too difficult. In fact, I had to spend a fair amount of time widening the pickup sockets out to make them fit.
      Looking at the Dot, it looks like you would only have to shave back some edges, at the top if at all, to get them to fit. It looks like less work than what I did in this video. Otherwise, mounting the pickups should be the same.
      How do the electronics/wiring look in the back of the guitar? Is there an access plate like solid-bodies?
      www.jazzguitar.be/forum/attachments/guitar-amps-gizmos/26877d1452301410-epiphone-broadway-file-1166-jpg

    • @Dgsterx
      @Dgsterx  Рік тому +1

      Looking at more pictures, I think the wiring would be much more difficult on the Dot due to the hollow body and no rear access plate. I can't really say what would be involved in that process, unfortunately

    What fishman fluence modern pup model did you get? I see they have several versions, trying to understand if there’s a version that would actually fit. Don’t have these carpentry tools :D

    • @Dgsterx
      @Dgsterx  2 роки тому

      Hi! I specifically bought the Fishman Fluence Modern 7 String pups (non-soap bar type). My understanding is that they have the "soap bar" and Non-soap bar styles to accommodate different guitars. However, I got the right set and still had to make modifications as the stock Jackson pups were slightly smaller in size. Unfortunately I don't think it's possible to put these in this particular guitar without the modifications, the only other guy I talked to that did this had to mod as well.
      Some of these Jacksons have the soap bar styles in them, so perhaps that experience may be different. However, I have not seen the FFM 7 String pups in that style.
      My recommendation is to get a cheap $40 Chicago Electric Dremel from Harbor Freight, that is what I used and it ended up working out great.
      I hope this answers your questions. Good luck!

      These guitars do not fit capped humbuckers without modification. To get one’s that would fit, you’ll need their “open core” pickups, or from any other brand, an uncovered pickup, or to remove the pickup cover

    Hey man! I got started with this project finally. Same guitar same pickups. I followed the one tone one volume diagram but the guitar still doesn’t work. I would imagine that the issues is in the 3 way pickup selector as that part is not clear on the diagram, I was wondering if you could tell me how you could connected the wires there. Cheers!

    • @Dgsterx
      @Dgsterx  Рік тому

      Hi Daniel! No problem, below is a Google Drive link to a close-up picture of the Jacskon 3 way selector switch. I essentially just wired it the same way it was originally wired with the stock pickups.
      drive.google.com/file/d/1_8hGmcfeW5TElw5svHJCQuj6U758GZ8I/view?usp=share_link
      In short, the 2 white wires that come from the pickups are connected to the 2 outside pins on both sides of the 3-way. Each wire is connected to 2 pins.
      The blue wire comes from the volume knob, grounds on the case of the switch, and is connected to both of the middle pins (see highlights in picture). I believe this is just a ground, it's only blue in my guitar because that's the color of wire I had on hand.
      If you don't know which white wire is which pickup, be sure to leave yourself plenty of extra slack in case you have to swap them. I only briefly mentioned it in the video, but I wired the switch backwards (the selector worked opposite directions) and had to go back to swap the wires and re-solder

    I just got them today but i didn't know there were 2 versions. I got the soapbar ones. I will need to widen the wholes to be able to place them, right? Is that some possible problem? Thank you in advance.

    • @Dgsterx
      @Dgsterx  Рік тому +1

      Hi there! I'm sorry to hear that! Oddly enough I made a similar mistake. I bought the humbucker style pickups like the ones in the video, but originally I planned to put them in my other JS22-7 that has soap bars in it. I couldn't really figure out how to make that work, but luckily my second JS22-7 (the one in the video) takes standard pickups. I was able to install them in there, but still had to widen the pickup slots.
      If the Jackson has regular pickups, but the Fishmans are soap bars, I'm sure it's possible, but it will take a lot of widening. I was able to do this fairly easily as the plastic pickup rings cover where I widened the slots. There are no pickup rings with the soap bars, so you have to be extra careful when widening to make sure it still looks clean when you're done.
      If the Jackson has soap bars, and the Fishmans are standard, that's the dilemma I had and I don't know how to make that work. I had to use a different guitar all together.
      Hope that helps!

      I hope so too, I actually wasn't expecting that when I started the project.
      I have an Ibanez RG with aftermarket EMGs installed, so it should be much different than those. I'm sure it can be done.
      Also, someone else in these comments said they were able to do this without routing by sanding down the corners of the pickups themselves (instead of the guitar) and they were able to fit them in the factory cutouts. That had never occurred to me, and may be the easier route, just make sure you don't ruin the finish on the pretty pickups 😊

      I suppose if you are able to widen the slots enough and keep it nice and clean then yes. My Dremel work wasn't the cleanest, so at the end the pickup rings covered some of that up. However, I'm not at all a professional or expert so I'm sure there's probably better ways to do it. I don't see why it wouldn't work if you have the right tools
