    I'm currently in the process of installing the open core classic set into my Gibson Les Paul. Some things I think others may want to know: On my 18 LP, the pots are definitely not long enough that come in the kit. Yes, I took the "other" nut off and washer. No dice. When I contacted Fishman they said they would ship out the long shaft pots and they did, just know that it took 2 weeks for me to actually receive these parts.
    Secondly, my LP has the PC board in it, so if your guitar does too, make sure you have wire for everything but the pickups. I am choosing not to hack up the OEM harness so I can put everything back to stock easily in the future, that means I need wiring for the input jack, switch, and all the connections between the POTS. As mentioned in another post here, the bus wire isn't included either, so have that on hand before you start the installation process. I haven't quite buttoned up the install, so I will edit this when I have actually played them. I certainly hope that the time and frustration of not knowing some of these things is worth it in the end.

    Kind of silly to design a cutting edge pickup and still use soldered wires in the cavity and for all pots... Why not use plugs for everything?

    • @dushk0
      @dushk0 6 років тому +22

      The pickups are solderless actually... But bro, soudah gives that audiophool mojo - more notes get through a fat dab of solder than a small contact point with an air gap. It can't be measured, but I'm sure some people could claim detriment of transients and less oomph in the percussion department.

    • @RyanJamesODonnell

    • @misterringer
      @misterringer 5 років тому +15

      I agree. I'd be fine with a "more expensive" solderless pot.
      Would cost them a bit more upfront in R&D, but once designed the cost to build would be negligible compared to the pots they include now. I think they'd push a lot more units if these were more "plug and play", so to speak.

      You can use the same wire diagram for EMG (2vol/1tone) because of the 3 main wires of fishman pickups (black, red, white) are the same as of EMGs. The main difference is which features you want to control with the 2 push-pull included with the kit, if you get another one, then you can control all of them (V1/V2, HF tilt on/off, coil tapping)

      I emailed them and they were cool enough to send me a diagram. Its basically the three pot wiring diagram shown on the fluence open cores page. All the knobs are basically the same with the capacitor designating tone knob. So i used the push/pulls as my volume and soldered the capacitor to the normal knob as a tone knob and have no issues. For reference i installed Keith Merrow series into my Hellraiser.

    I have an esp ltd sc-207 and I've decided to change the pickups to the steph carpenter signature fluence pickups. The pickups are already ordered and on the way but my question was, is there a wiring diagram that will allow me to use only one tone and one volume pot. I personally prefer one tone and two volume but the sc-207 only has holes routed for one of each and I'm fine keeping it that way I'm just not sure how the wiring should be set. Thanks

    I suffered through doing all of this with a Les Paul which is has a much deeper and has a narrower cavity as well as the pickup switch being located located up and across the guitar's body. Itching to see if I pulled it all off, low and behold, there was NO INCLUDED BUS WIRE contrary to what the narrator clearly states. I felt like crying because I'm not very experienced with this and worked at it over the entire weekend only to hit this snag and have to wait until Monday. It turns out that the "included bus wire" referred to in this video is NOT INCLUDED--EVER and that, according to Fishman support, this video was made before the product was issued. So there is a mistake at the end which may throw you if you are not experienced and/or don't have some wire to use. In any event you'll have to get a piece of wire to use for the last step which is to ground the pots together.
    Also, because of the depth and smaller space in which to work compared to the SG in the video, you will probably need to solder things as much as you can before installing the pots. The pickups themselves need no soldering. And the pickup switch, which is up up and away on a Les Paul (more towards your chin than your picking hand) does not need any soldering either. You have have to open the switch cavity to observe how its connected so you can ultimately connect the proper pickups to the label or toggle switch position, but no need to take it out. There is a long wire (mine is gray) which has an inner white wire and shielding. The white wire goes to the "tip" lug on the output jack and the shielding wire goes to the "sleeve" lug just next to the "tip" lug. Another piece of wire also is used to join the shielding ground to a "pot" cover. This is no small job.
    Some people have been saying that the pot shafts are too short for a Les Paul. Not so. There are extra nuts and washers on the shaft that one can remove to get enough of the shaft through the thicker top that is on a Les Paul. Try to leave on ring--especially one that will grab the wood if you have one so that if the nut on the outside of the top loosens, the pot won't spin and potentially break one of your soldered connections. So don't freak if your pot stems seem too short. Just take of the superfluous nuts and washer rings. Good luck folks. I have been thrilled with the installation of the Fishman Fluence pup set for my Telecaster. This technology is the best there is today and will change the game.

    So I know this video is 6 years old and I may not get a response but.. I'm installing these humbuckers and I am basically rebuilding my guitar from scratch so I'm trying to find these push pull pots, and the internet says that I need 25k push pull pots for active pickups but I cannot find any 25k ppps anywhere besides knock off brands with bad reviews.
    So my question is, does anyone make these ppps anymore. If they do, where can I find them. If they don't, what can I substitute. As the internet says I should not use anything above 100k on active pickups
    I'm a complete novice at this so I'm going in blind and desperately trying to make this work.

    • @RainMakeR_Workshop
      @RainMakeR_Workshop 9 років тому

      Cool. Will do! I'm curious though. If you split a fluence humbucker to get that single coil tone... Which of the two "voices" will it adopt the main characteristics from? Or will it be some sort of original tone?

    • @RainMakeR_Workshop
      @RainMakeR_Workshop 9 років тому

      How the hell would that work? Do you mean using one of your single coils? Sounds amazing! I was just thinking that you missed a trick by not having a true single coil sound inbuilt to the humbuckers! But having a HSH set up that can do true SSS tones would be sic! I'd love to see a how to wiring vid for that badass setup!
      I now neeeed to get me some modern fluence (primarily metal player) pups and a fluence single coil and set it up HSH with series/parallel! Would the trick work in reverse too? So i could get a use the active or high output voice from the modern humbucker in the single coil?

    • @RainMakeR_Workshop
      @RainMakeR_Workshop 9 років тому

      Does that mean that if i wired it right, using a modern bridge humbucker, a single width single coil and a classic neck humbucker in a HSH setup, I could potentially wire it up to have an active metal voice, a passive high gain voice, a vintage paf voice, the fishman exclusive original clear voice, a vintage single coil voice and a texas hot single coil voice from all of them? Or would the wiring through each others pre-amps get too complex?

    • @RainMakeR_Workshop
      @RainMakeR_Workshop 9 років тому

      That is beyond cool. Have your R&D guys ever considered devoting a preamp potentiometer? Think like a Line 6 Variax and the way it can sound like a Stratocaster, Telecaster, Les Paul, Rickenbacker. You could develop something like that only not as limited by "emulation". Real single coil, humbucker, p-90, filtertron and genre variants like metal passive and active tones, sell a HSH set with the preamp pot... Twould be amazing

    I don't believe the picture of how to solder the tone pot matches how you are showing us you soldered the capacitor on the tone pot @ 1:31 in the video. The picture shows the capacitor is grounded from the third lug on the pot and the routed into the middle terminals on the push/pul section of the pot. That's not how you are actually running the leads on the capacitor @ 1:31 in the video.
