I disagree with your closing statement, this is a perfect instructional video! Clearly and concisely narrated at a decent volume with all necessary information and guidance, high resolution, well lit and well shot footage and no ridiculous music making it impossible to hear the voiceover - it's perfect, thanks so much for putting up a great quality "how to video" :)
Certainly a very useful video, very clear spoken, no music and all is well shown. I'm happy I found this on YT because the shop I visited told me they would have to take out the camshafts to adjust valveclearance! Now I am going to cancel the appointment.
Hello. I'm also happy you found this video too. I am even more happier that you found this useful and informative. On my BMW Boxer, you need to remove the camshafts to replace the shims but not on the XJR1300 as my video shows. If you do decide to undertake the work yourself; well done! Many have gone for the first time before, me included :)
Thanks Mark. It's really good to hear that these videos help people. Just clocked 24,000 now and still in same condition. Just discovered some split O rings on the chain so time for new one. ( 21k on the current chain )
@@CLLUK ok, thanks for that. it was just for a video then? The reason i ask is, i have 2005 xjr 1300 and to my knowledge mine have never been changed. The bike has only done 22000miles do you think they would need a change?
@@TheMadGesticulator Hi Brian, i did this clearance check at the 12k service. The shims themselves seemed to be the correct rated thickness. Of the 8 clearances ( inlets and outlets ) I seem to remember only around half were slightly out of spec range. So, to keep costs down I made a table of individual clearance measurements and shim rated thickness ( as stamped on the shim ) Then I could see what shims I could move to other ports to bring the clearance within spec. Hope that makes sense. I think then I ended only buying 2 or 3 new shims. I think there's someone who did a video on this table as mentioned above.
@@TheMadGesticulator Sorry your question. It depends on the level of tappet noise I guess. Personally at 22k I would go ahead and do it. If anything else, it's an interesting job and what with the haynes WS guide and UA-cam videos you should be Okay.
Thank you Martino & All. The Tappet Adjustment Tool is: Tappet adjusting tool 90890-04110 Valve adjustment tool YM-33966 I can't recall where I found it. Just checked on eBay and various sources there. It's not cheap though :( . Good Luck Carlos

Awesome video, just about to do mine so very helpful. And can I just mention this has to be the cleanest XJR on the planet!

Good Luck. Always nice to know these videos help others. Thanks, I know, I spend too much time in cleaning sometimes. Verging on OCD.. 😊
best video on this job
Clear and precise video, very usefull for Fj 1200 as well, thanks for your time and advices
Can you check the other clearances with the shims removed
Why didn’t piston make contact with the valve if valve was held open and you moved crankshaft afterwards?
Why this toll doesn't press the second shim holder on the same time?
Hi, yes of course, you can do both inlets or exhausts at the same time. I only focused on the one for the demonstration.
I will have a go at making my own adjustment tool when I get around to doing mine 👍 great video.
Thanks, Great Idea!
were the old ones worn already?
Hi, couldn't measure any discernible wear.
