Matt is definitely a good dude because i would have walked away from that job. Down side to being a mobile mechanic, people will call you for their mess ups
I think he tried fixing it himself by watching UA-cam but failed miserably and said hes blaming it on someone else. Cuz he obviously knows exactly what he did to the car

Nah it can be saved it’s just is it worth backtracking. It’s all about time and money at this point, the guy turned a straight forward job into a headache. It’s hard to say what he exactly did and standing behind your work with something like this is difficult.
Ya know... there are these things called "service manuals" that explain the procedures to do this stuff correctly. Why would someone dive into something like this without service information?

THen you become the bad guy. This old guy keep saying everything is good. Valves and so forth that would really worry me because something seems wrong. RUN, RUN AWAY.
I dont mess with changing timing chains anymore unless the vehicle has less than 120,000 on the clock and the customer discontinued driving it as soon as the misfire, cam/crank, along with cam sensors bank 1/2 code was set. But most people have driven with the cam/crank codes on for so long by the time they call me because they start having severe drivability issues. They have already done mechanical damage to the engine and damaged or melted the inside of the catalytic converter. I have gotten to the point that I just quote for used engine install and a heavily discounted install of chains, guides, water pump, phasers, and vvt solenoids, etc. While the used engine is on its shipping pallet.
These engines are easy to time I actually had this type of scenario where the customer towed their vehicle in from there parking lot because of another back yard mechanic was doing their timing chain replacement 😂 I had to fix his fk up and re time it thank god it worked out for me. We told them the risk of what could happen.
The title to this video says it all! I mean the gentleman that you spoke too had enough sense to know that this "mechanic" wasn't doing something right so kudos to him for telling the dude to stop and get the hell away from his car. But soo many people that don't have alot of money let these scammers talk them into working on their vehicles just to have it get all messed up. This is the common theme in alot of Matt's videos. if it was him and not ‘a friend’ then you gotta feel a little for him - we’ve all worked on cars and screwed up and got in over our heads at least once….but yer turning a water pump into taking the whole damn motor apart😂😂
what a flipping screw up the guy made man.. i just want to give a little tip. look into it with the boroscope. if you dont see any obvious valve damage, try and set up the timing correctly without removing the cams. once youve timed it put the spark plugs back in it and just bar the engine over by hand. usually you can feel compression just by turning the crank over by hand. if it has compression i'd put the covers back on and finish the job. im not trying to critique your work plan, im just trying to throw an idea out there to save you some hassle. Im looking forward to the part 2 of this video! i love the great work and heart that you have for costumers!
I have to fix techs muck ups alot in the body shop it is frustrating but it does make you a better tech in the end. I enjoy watching him fix what other companies mess up.
Do not take the cams off. Get some cam clamps from ford with d locks. Take of the chains, get it as close to TDC as you can. Loosen one side of cam clamps at a time while hold the cam your loosening, and attempt to rotate the cam clockwise until the sprocket slot on the cam is pointing at the crank. Do the same with the second cam in the bank you’re working. Repeat with second bank then attempt to put it at tdc. If you can’t even get close to tdc then the last guy would have had to have taken the cams off and moved the crank then put the cams back on.
1:40 you don't have to remove the cams or caps to get motor back in time. Take chain off. Roll crank about 90 degrees which will have all pistons down from tdc. Then you can move all 4 cams 360 degrees without valves hitting pistons
That’s what I was saying 😂 I did a ton of these at a Toyota dealership as a Toyota tech!!! Doing tons of fords 😂 I bought me sets of timing chains tools for these fords that’s how many we got.
I would do the job, but i would quote high just incase you run in to issues. And you are right, those can be done in a day so the car owner should be alright. You need to inspect the valves to make sure they arent bent/broken.
@C0rvette454 common misconception in all honesty. Just because we are mobile, doesnt mean we arent professionals. Yes there are some bad eggs in the bunch but most of us are ex shop mechanics that wanted a change. At least thats my story. Im not saying he should quote the moon, but quoting a couple hours over book is reasonable for having to clean up someone elses mess. Of course it is a quote not a bill so the final total will likely change. The thing about it is, if he quotes high and doesnt need the time, he can take it off the bill. But by qouting high, if he does use the time, it wont be a shock to the customer at the end. It will vary by loacation to. Where i am, im on the cheap end at 125 an hour. I know one of my competitors close to me charges 175 an hour.
How would a mechanic's lien work for a mobile mechanic? In a shop, you have the car hostage. For a mobile mechanic, a payment plan sounds likely to be a no-payment plan if the work is done first.
