That lady was super chill. She understood that something was wrong but kept her wits about her and parked the car quickly till she called Matthew. Those Buicks are NOT known for headgaskets so i wasn't surprised when it came back negative. I can't wait to see the followup video on her car.
Please keep up the good work on the videos. They are not only entertaining but also informative. Im building a mobile mechanic buisness myself and I love your content.
Years ago Pontiac feiero slam hot then drop back to normal.Went to doing a head gasket and had a broke head bolt Some how..Replaced gasket and new bolts and sent it on down road.. ❤
I had a customer one time, the lady I worked with put the wrong oil filter on the customer's car. We called the lady and said don't drive the car we are sending a tow truck and the customer instead of pulling over literally romped on the engine while I was on the phone with her pretty sure it shot the filter off. I was like welp I guess that's one way to get a free engine. My point is good on her for pulling over when she saw the light. Btw the car that was blown up had 280k miles on it.
Those 3.8 Buick engines have a very unique and unmistakable smell in the cooling system when they blow a head gasket, smells like a burnt turd. I could pop that cap, take one sniff and tell you if the thing was cooked or not
My dad was caught town with his 3.8 litre Buick L36 powered Holden VX Commodore when the radiator basically dropped its guts about a decade ago & since we live about 11 kilometres (a bit over 6 miles) out of town he was forced to drive it to one of the least desirable mechanics over here in Australia - Steve. He's a Parker whose workshop is now closed so now he's a mobile mechanic, him or his son sheared of the 6 millimetre screws which held the radiator fan onto the radiator & on a brand new radiator. That's probably why his workshop is closed now,his son took to one of the sway bar Link rods with a hammer & snapped it because it was kind of spot welded onto the Link rod ball joint. They didn't do a pink slip for my car for an annual registration inspection in 2013 so I took it somewhere else !
I'd like to be able to work and do stuff like this helping people out. Thanks for doing your job, I hope that the people you help understand nothing is free. In the past some people didn't want to pay a dime
Gosh i wish we had mobile mechanics in my area! I will say my mechanic has been good to me! Just got a tune up after intermittent flashing engine light, cylinder 1 misfire. Car seems to be running much better! But i noticed when i start it it has a chemical smell, no overheating, no visible leaks. My Dad said it is common smell on some cars at start. I will keep an eye on it though
Get a cheap IR thermometer, can check temp of hoses or rad and see if ect is off or by checking different sections of coolant you can tell if a thermostat is stuck closed or if there is a blockage in radiator or if wp is crapped out
The radiator, those plastic elbows and lower intake gaskets are weak points on these 3.8 engines. They make problem solver intake gaskets with aluminum plate with rubber around the intake ports and they also make replacement aluminum elbows that dont crack as easy. The 3800 series 2 is a great engine, my wife ran them as a rural mail carrier for 7 years and in that time we've owned 5 buick lesabre's with the 3.8 and only 1 ever ran hot enough to damage the head gasket. GM used the 3800 in many differnt vehicles and platforms over the years. I dont know why they quit making it.
I believe these engines are based on the Australian made Holden commodores. Which stop manufacturing few years ago. Due to incompetence of how gm ran Holden and dwindling market share. And also fuel prices. No wanted 6 cyclinder engine as a family car.
@@JamesAnderson-fw5ew Thats whats up, that thing is going to fly lol! I got a mostly stock 8th gen. Good ol k20z3. When it finally does decide to crap out on me I'm gonna do the k24/k20 swap.

Hey bro I have a leak I think from oil pan I put stop leak in it it only drops one drop every 2 hours do u even consider that a leak do I really need to get it fixed?
I'm a rotary guy, and but I'm no mechanic I just kinda do stuff and I'm learning a lot, anyways, would that device you use to check for headgasket leak be effective for testing for inner coolant seal leak? I guess I could maybe just do a compression test but I would like to have that type of tool in the arsenal.
If its a oil burner out of warranty dont buy it luckily my sisters had extreme oil consumption 1 quart at every gas fill up got warrantied at 69000 miles she bought it new so had 100k warranty

Yeah, it’s the 3400 that’s known for that, not the 3800.
Lower intake gaskets
“I wouldn’t even call them safe” 🤣🤣
That had me too. 😂
found your videos last night. You are a good honest dude. The world needs more people like you.
“I wouldn’t call them safe”🤣🤣🤣 dude that took me out! Great video
She was smart to find somewhere to pull over immediately. Great video.
Matt is the man. Best mobile mechanic in the country.
Atleast she knows some stuff about cars, seems like a nice girl
Make sure her cooling fans are operational change the thermostat and make sure there's no trapped air bubbles in the system
The 3.8 are very reliable transmissions are good even if head gasket is blown it's worth fixing in these head gaskets are rarer in these for going
I think there’s a crack in the radiator she said ??? lol she found the issue

That is one scary test - if it turns YELLOW, you're going to have a very bad DAY
Still cheaper then a test with 2 lines....

Old school trick is the rev the cold engine while squeezing the upper radiator hose. Normally it will pressurize and get tight.
I personally use the thermostats that lock in the open position when they fail
Please post longer complete video's!
Longer videos please Matt 🙏🙏🙏
You should really do a leak down test. Sometimes a head gasket can blow between two cylinders and not a water jacket
I have the same car, same engine. So easy to work on.

Get a cheap IR thermometer, can check temp of hoses or rad and see if ect is off or by checking different sections of coolant you can tell if a thermostat is stuck closed or if there is a blockage in radiator or if wp is crapped out
Did you perform a pressure test on the coolant system? The lady described coolant leakege under vehicle.
I felt like the car was getting drug tested 😂
The 3800 series 3 rarely ever has a head gasket failure. It’s the first and second series that had that problem
