  • THE British crew of a luxury yacht feared for their lives as a pod of 30 killer whales attacked them.
    The 25ft orcas slammed into the vessel’s hull for two hours - and one swam away with a chunk of the rudder.
    The three-strong crew feared they would sink as the five-ton mammals rammed them.
    Brit Martin Evans, 45, who lives in Greece, said: “It was an onslaught.”
    Nathan Jones, 27, of New Milton, Hants, added: “I began to think: ‘Is this how it all ends?’
    “If the boat had sunk we would have been in a life raft surrounded by killer whales. That would have be drastic.”
    The crew left Ramsgate, Kent, and were attacked near the Strait of Gibraltar, where the boat is now being fixed.

      Of course; they were just "playing". Mean little brats!😔 They could capsize a boat and there is no other way to dice it. People always want to say great whites are the apex predator of the sea, but killer whales kill them. They are a serious threat and I don't understand why people try to excuse their aggressive behavior. They can be quite ruthless!😔☹️

      @sc29607 2 роки тому +8

      @@markbass9402 orcas are the biggest member of the dolphin family which is part of the delphinidae which is also part of the family cetacea. So calling orcas whales is not completely correct. Whales are classified in two different families, baleen whales (what we know as whales like blue whales or humpback whales) and toothed whales which leads to delphinidae (dolphins, orcas or porpoises).
      If you can’t respect their natural habitat you should consider to stay out of the water. What I still don’t understand, the fact about the orca attacks are known since almost two years now, the Portuguese government and coast guard gave even warnings out (already in August 2020) for boats smaller than 35ft to avoid the Gulf of Biscaya / Strait of Gibraltar but since then you just see the videos popping up (latest from a 31ft SY in November 2021) in UA-cam. Are humans so stupid or just brave?
      I’m not even sure if this are really attacks, most report to see 3-4 orcas, most juvenile ones and one or maximum two adult ones. You barely see the leading female and definitely not the rest of the pod. Normally or pod is three to four times the size of what we can see on the surface, so it could be between 12-16 orcas at all. I believe that a pod of orcas, even a big female or male orca could easily sink a sailboat of the size up to 40ft. Orcas can reach a weight of up to 6 tons (the biggest ever caught one was around 7.8 tons) and a length up to 32ft. Orcas often breach the surface and lift their bodies entirely out of the water which means in fact that they could easily “jump” onto the boats. We don’t need to be engineers to know that a modern sail yacht might withstand such an attack maybe twice before the hull will break. So an intentional attack I doubt because that would be the behaviour I would expect of an orca that wants to harm us, that’s how they hunt, jumping or swimming over whales and so blocking their air hole to drown them. But they start with biting their fluke to take their ability away to steer. Since the most “attacks” on boats are done by juvenile orcas I think it might be their way to teach them how to hunt and let’s be honestly blunt, a rudder is a nice toy for a juvenile orca, sticking out so single wise underneath out boats, it’s like an invitation for them to try it. Except the damages not one human suffered an injury nor a death yet, just the rudders and the fears. I’m pretty sure that a pod of orcas (12-16 animals) easily could sink even a bigger yacht (50-60ft) if they really would intent to do so, not happened yet. We should respect it and either accept it, it’s their natural habitat, we join and encounter it voluntarily - they can’t just jump out of it and flee and it’s along their hunting areas or we just avoid it which means we would have to sail much longer ways (around it which means going out much more and sail back) or sail to o old different locations and routes.

    I think they think it's a whale. Orcas track large whales because they can hear their low frequency sounds. Superb hearing.
    A depth and fish finder uses sonar and technically it would find the orcas. Who would then receive the message as if a whale sent the signal. So for all intents and porpoises 😁 you are a whale to them.
    The rudder looks a bit like a whale fin. Orcas tend to go for those parts when attacking a whale. They love the liver for some reason. Which is the under belly.
    I can see why they would make the mistake. They are juveniles still learning to hunt. And it's the same pod. So Good idea turning everything off.

    they’re smart enough to potentially know there’s food for them on the boat, (fish. Maybe they’re associating all small vessels with fishing boats, they’re still animals though they don’t have a way or the intelligence level to know the difference somehow). It’s also possible they mistook it for a small easily targetable whale, what the man describes them doing to the boat is incredibly similar to the way orca pods hunt whales. We still have no precedent to assume they would actually attack the humans if they ended up in the water. Although it’s possible the humans could drown.
