These comments from certain people are amazing, "They weren't aggressive to the people on the boat, maybe they thought it was food ( my personal favorite)" What if they had damaged the boat enough to sink it? All These comments about harming/killing these magnificent creatures are disgusting! It would be all the same if someone broke in your house and everyone suggests you the homeowner should be punished instead of the burglar..
Ever thought of just tapping on the S/S rudder posts with a metal work hammer. Acoustics would drive them away. Being a sitting duck is just not good seamanship. Start engine, generator, bow thruster all electronics and make as much noise as you can. I was taught this as a 15 year old, now 50 years later still applies. BTW , these attacks by Orca’s only happen in this area. Why? Spanish Tuna Fish farms between Cadiz and Tarifa. Go inside them and you should be OK. It’s their Ocean, not ours, but we shouldn’t be enemies. Just train them. I came thru from Rota last week no probs now in Gibralter.
Precisely what the nautical authorities advise is to turn off all the underwater acoustic instrumentation (probe, sonar, etc.), put the rudder on the track and stop the boat's engine, even lower the sails. Do not show yourself overboard and in case of losing the rudder request towing. Never overexcite killer whales with acoustic aggressions, it is extremely dangerous. We are a toy for them. These attacks were already being carried out in areas of the west of the Iberian Peninsula before, surely in other areas as well. Greetings from Cádiz, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean.

However, after reading many of the bizarre comments below having a go at the boat and its skipper, I can only conclude that the human gene pool requires a bit more chlorine.
Sadly I think this is going to end up with this pod of Orcas getting shot. That's what Robin Knox Johnston did to a shark that was stopping him repairing a sprung plank on Suhaili. I keep mentioning this but the Robertson family's wooden yacht was rammed and sunk in the Pacific by Orcas in the 1970s. The family survived drifting in their dinghy for over a month. Killer whales are sensitive to sound frequencies. I have to imagine equipping a boat with a hydrophone/transmitter and sending a squelch or other unpleasant sounds through it might help hinder/deter attacks like this. Wonder if anyone has tried this? Nobody wants to hurt them, but if one of those skegless rudders gets ripped out, the boat is going down. It's happened before. Then you're looking at a possible life or death situation. Gotta come up with a good defensive solution to this, as each attack they get away with encourages the behavior.
Install a spiked steel or aluminum alloy roller cylinder (1.5 inch round or square stock) on the trailing edge of the rudder between two flat stock pieces bolted to the upper and lower edges of the rudder. The attack may be for the same reason that the Moby Dick story was recorded. Early sailing ships used a cable to strengthen the bow spirit. By the looks of those keels, I would not be surprised if a vibration is going on. The early sailing ships turned to chains for their bow spirits. And how do you know it's playing? Do you speak Orca? Are you the armchair expert who can figure just from watching this clip? Oh.. do you even know that these are the different ecotype from those people swam with in Alaska, Norway, New Zealand, etc.?
Maybe practicing for tearing fins off whales. I suspect if they were after the meat popsicles on top it would end badly. Mom is teaching the kids a skill. How many instances had an adult male involved in the attack?
Several orcas have been netted captured and realeased. They are very bright and could be descendants taught this behaviour to prevent capture of pod members
I wonder how they would react if you take a long stick and resolutely prod them when they are close? Would they be scared, or turn aggressive? Since they are juveniles it might scare them.
The Orca's bit the rudders thinking the boat is a large whale thinking they are fins! A brain is a terrible thing to waste folks! All you have to do is paint the bottom of the boat hull and stabilizer fins with dots to look not so appetizing but what do I know.
Iv heard of this before; isn't there some sort of sound device; a sound a killer whale doesn't like that could be dropped over into the water to Amit a signal the whales would shy & retreat from?
@@aparks8244 Yes you can look it up on google quickly because it’s a well known fact among scientists and sailors/fishers who have a lot of experience around Orca. Also if you do look it up you will see the long history we have getting along with orca. Back before fisherman industry became so commercialized Orca would alert fishermen of bigger sperm whales that we couldn’t see below or at night and when we would kill them for their brain oil the orca would just take the liver as payment. That’s why they are nicknamed killer whales which really was whale killers translated from another language. Orca have similar brains to human and understand things we probably can’t imagine. I think these are just juveniles playing not realizing the potential danger because they are so young. Now if they aren’t juveniles and I’m wrong it could be an adult teaching younger orca how to hunt large prey just for practice but they all look really small and are exposing their bellies a lot in a way which I do believe suggests playfulness. It is unfortunate that the people on board had to go through it as regardless of our history with them, it would still be scary. Hopefully insurance will help with the damages as well.
Looking at the dorsal fins, exactly the same ones that interacted with me a damaged our boat on the 5th September off Sagres. Some are saying to throw diesel in the water. The Sagres fishermen put ammonia in.
It's been well documented they use keels and rudders as make shift back scratches. Get yourself an Island Packet. The rudders aren't made like toothpicks. Notice the "attack" was over when the rudder broke and he could no longer get close enough to use it without his fins getting in the way.

You can see these orcas are upside down, meaning they are rubbing themselves on your boat. These are very playful animals and they are bored and see these boats as a toy something to play with for a short time. You people need to have rudders that you can pull up, when this is going on. And everything will just fine.
@@Kris155mm I think you are the one, who is out in left field. In case you don’t know, but they have KICK UP RUDDERS now in these modern times, that boats can replace with their unmovable rudders. Pull your head out. Mister I’m such the sailor man.
Would steel replacement rudders, although costly, resolve the problem or at least keep the ship seaworthy while international efforts stem the massive assault on the oceans and marine life that is now out of control?
@@777rogerf I don’t understand what you are saying. For a few thousand dollars people can protect their boats, since everyone is an uproar about it. I know for a fact, these orcas are seeing these boats pass through, as an object, to rub themselves on, and since the rudders are there, they chew on them. My suggestion was for the government of Spain, their orca research organization was to place several different large platforms of fiber glass, attached to buoys out in the oceans there. Somewhere where these orcas can get their fix, so they will leave these boats alone.. And I hope the people will leave that orca pod alone.
Hi. I was thinking since some of this incidents are attacking and chewing rotors, perhaps the orcas are associating this with fins of enemy pods or animals they are recognizing as a threat, mainly I am referring to the shape of the rotors or fins or stabilizers of the boats that resemble in shape to theirs only bigger and that is why they get into a trace to relentlessly stack the boats to neutralize them. Killing by association.
Next time take the handle end of the gaff( the rubber plug) out put gaff in water and whistle and screech though the handle ( like a mega phone) and try to come.unicate with them . And ask them to leave you alone in whale language.
They are very intelligent animals. I don't know, if you were directly aggressive towards them, they good get pissed and turn more aggressive towards the boat and crew. I was thinking of some sort of chemical to pour into the water. Something like ammonia or bear spray that would irritate their eyes.
Orcas bash against ice floes in order to tip them up and get seals into the water. They then eat the seals. This seems worryingly similar. No animal puts this much energy into something without a good reward in sight. Is there a case for putting the propellor on? It seems possible that would deter them.
The official advice is to switch of all mechanical and electrical systems and wait until they get bored which is what we did. These animals appeared very healthy and IMO I think they were just playing with us. It is not the whole pod just a handful of young juveniles who are behaving like this and they have even been identified and named by the authorities.
@@TheRectory33 I would think that the more mechanical noise and potential sonic disturbance, the better. Did you ever think about putting the engines on full throttle and motoring out of there? Since they were chewing on the rudders, it could potentially have either scared them or given them a bloody snout (also scaring them....or pissing them off!).
orcas don't eat humans, theres videos of them playing around lone swimmers and divers... its just a practise hunting game for the young when they bite the boats rudder, it looks like a whale. need to paint yellow or red and black stripes so it looks like a poisonous fish under water....
I think it's too subjective a matter for anyone to scream definitively it's NOT an attack, but obviously the Orca were interested in the boat. They can be interested and still be attacking, in fact I think interest is a necessary precursor for an attack. Yeah, it's probably more accurate and certainly more politically correct to call this an interaction. An interesting, probably non-predatory though still potentially life threatening interaction that most anyone on the boat at the time would reasonably consider an attack.
I wonder what they might do if you suddenly started the engine and spinning the prop?? These animals are highly intelligent and they don't forget things that humans have done to them.. it might be that some sea park came and stole a calf or two from them or perhaps a member of their community is one of those whales who have been released from capture and was kept at a sea/amusement park?? These animals act very similar to us so what would cause our family to attack a certain animal or object in our area??
Apparently when someone tried doing so they get very interested with the bubbles and actually get closer the rudder, but not the props. A trick is to hit the reverse and just keep going like that because the orcas will follow you from the bow. You lose a lot of fuel though because they won't get bored quickly lol
what are they doing>???? they are destroying all the boats rudders and not getting anything in return? why would they keep doing this and where did this behavior come from?
Scary is the fact that adult orca are teaching youngsters to do the same
Orcas begins to attack whale's by biting their tail fin and pectoral fin. Practice dummy for the teenager's.
Wouldn't doubt it. It's like watching a free cooking class on your mobile phone while the family drives to vacation for the summer.

This will continue as the adults doing this to a good number of boats sailing off the coast of Spain / Portugal are showing / training the juveniles this behaviour so it will be passed down for generations to come ..
Thats why the Navy needs to kill them now
Gonna attach a vinegar sprayer/pump to my skeg.
Apart from vinegar, what do orcas not like?
A 10mm socket, they hate hand tools!
VAT..... tax them.... every one hates taxes
Bleech and flares
Want to live ?
last time I heard they are not too fond of foie gras, but sevruga caviar is fine
chillies crushed with pepper....paint the keg or rudder yellow and black or red and black stripes. maybe they are using the rudders on boats as a training lesson for their young on attacking whales...
Tag them and then avoid them
I’m pretty sure orcas have seen other boats at the bottom of the ocean. They can figure out what to do next.
this isnt an attack.... it's playing.... seems you know nothing about Orca's. If they wanted they'd have destroyed the boat in seconds....
Only if they know it is an eatable think yes than they can hit the boat till it sinks. All thesee touchs and attacks to understand that the boat is eatable or not.
So after they damage the boat little bit they see no blood coming out than they leave.
And how do you know it's playing? Do you speak Orca? Are you the armchair expert who can figure just from watching this clip? Oh.. do you even know that these are the different ecotype from those people swam with in Alaska, Norway, New Zealand, etc.?
- It's trying to rip the rudder off the boat. If it succeeds the boat will sink and the crew will be lunch. Kill the vicious killer whales!
They literally did destroy his boat in seconds.. did you skip the entire video?
Maybe practicing for tearing fins off whales. I suspect if they were after the meat popsicles on top it would end badly. Mom is teaching the kids a skill. How many instances had an adult male involved in the attack?
Several orcas have been netted captured and realeased. They are very bright and could be descendants taught this behaviour to prevent capture of pod members
They were just playing around mate. Even if you fell overboard you would have been safe from attack.
Oh ya just like the trainers who get chomped at Sea World. No thanks. I'd get my spear gun out or my bang stick. Expensive repairs I'm sure
No attacks on humans in the wild. Wade is right. People snorkel with Orcas in Norway. Zero attacks.
@@conats even those people wouldnt jump into the water here. Something has changed and we dont know why but this isnt normal behaviour we know
Orcas said this is for my cousin tilikum.😂😂😂
I wonder how they would react if you take a long stick and resolutely prod them when they are close? Would they be scared, or turn aggressive? Since they are juveniles it might scare them.
How far was you from the shore. And where was the ground?
He was 20 miles away from the coast of Portugal
Orcas have been trained by mermaids on how to disable boats
🤣🤣
Mermaids than own rudder repair workshops😉
The Orca's bit the rudders thinking the boat is a large whale thinking they are fins! A brain is a terrible thing to waste folks! All you have to do is paint the bottom of the boat hull and stabilizer fins with dots to look not so appetizing but what do I know.
Any chance you had forward scanning sonar on?
Iv heard of this before; isn't there some sort of sound device; a sound a killer whale doesn't like that could be dropped over into the water to Amit a signal the whales would shy & retreat from?
Electrify the rudders. Not enough to cause serious harm, but enough to dissuade them. Otherwise it's gonna be bullets.
There has got to be a reason for them to do this and i don't think it's lack of fish.
Possibly too much "socializing" with friendly humans.
I didn’t see ant attack there , orcas don’t attack humans in the wild , just playing and inquisitive
how often are humans in the wild with orcas? has there been a study on this?
A friend further up the coats reported an attack yesterday (30 Sept) totally disabling the rudder. They are waiting for a tow.
Turn your fish finder on. Scare the hell out of them by making them think you're out there fishing.
I wonder what would happen if someone could reach down and give the orca a little zap with a cattle prod.
Patti Messenger why don't you just throw dynamite at em, ya freak.
@@mezanian ....Just let the Japanese and Eskimos keep hunting them, they are prehistoric mammals just like dinosaurs and will be extinct soon enough.
It's been well documented they use keels and rudders as make shift back scratches.
Get yourself an Island Packet. The rudders aren't made like toothpicks.
Notice the "attack" was over when the rudder broke and he could no longer get close enough to use it without his fins getting in the way.
No. Notice the attack stopped after they finished eating the rudder. IE.. after the attack was over, they left 👀
Reverse at 3 knots when you think they're about to approach
They are making a point ... how many times do we have to be told to 'GTFO"?
GTFO ? 🤷🏻♂️
GTFO stands for Get The F**k Out. (I looked it up.)
I heard it’s best to heave to and they lose interest in the still vessel
Hi there, would you be so kind as to share your position (lat & long) when this happened - our yacht is in Portimao and we are looking to cross the bay of Cadiz next Easter - looks terrifying to be honest, and I will have my wife and daughter on board our Jeanneau 54 DS… Thanks in advance…
Hi Dave, it was approx. 5 miles off Barbate. The advice at the moment is to hug the coast around the bay of Cadiz. Good luck with your trip.
Maybe bring a box of 'sea friendly' chew toys with you!
@@Kris155mm go do a little research, on kick up rudders, landlubber. Times have changed and you are still uneducated, I can see.
@@outoftime7740 so create more navigation hazards so orcas can scratch, are you serious?
Not ya’ll gaslighting the poor guy for getting attacked by orcas 💀💀💀
Next time take the handle end of the gaff( the rubber plug) out put gaff in water and whistle and screech though the handle ( like a mega phone) and try to come.unicate with them . And ask them to leave you alone in whale language.
I definitely saw a toolbelt on the second one.
In a situation like this I would definitely try to prod them. Not with a sharp object, but still with some kind of stick.
They are very intelligent animals. I don't know, if you were directly aggressive towards them, they good get pissed and turn more aggressive towards the boat and crew. I was thinking of some sort of chemical to pour into the water. Something like ammonia or bear spray that would irritate their eyes.
I would shoot them.
@@andyw6702 Or a shotgun....
@@TheRectory33 awful financial kick in the backside, and potentially dangerous, but it is fascinating to watch, well over the internet anyway :)
@@SharonOBrienMusic good idea, I wonder if anyone's tried it!
They are probably just protecting their hunting territory
Sailors in that area sgould consider other colours of antifoul paint. Red or blue?
I am wondering, what will the orca's do if you turn around to the direction you came from, let's say 10 miles going back.
How big was the boat
53' Or 16.16m
They are playing,. One reason to have a steel hull sailboat.
These Orca are NOT attacking the boat. They are interested in it.
Interested in eating it’s fins? Man, stop it. Get some help.
Black bottom paint and twin rudders sure looks like a whale!
@@TheAboveHorizon thanks for your response

They want more refugees that they tasted further gown the coast.
