A symbiotic relationship. More or less. 🌊
The orcas pulled an uno reverse card
😂😂😂
They were just having fun, ive worked on cargo ships with months at sea and all sorts of whales routinely chase our ship; they have an absolute ball, its like they're playing.
Very well said ''having fun'' this is by far the smartest fish it can easily tip of the boat if it wants too they see us as friends they will do anything to please us
Maybe they recognise they save energy by doing it
sicelo gumede literally there are no reports of orcas eating people, even in the 4 times that Orcas have killed people in captivity, they never actually ate them

Well - their survival depends on teamwork.
When I bought my boat, I wondered if I'd ever see dolphins. The very first time I took her offshore (Santa Barbara Channel) we saw them right away. We debated changing course to approach them but the dolphins decided the issue for us. They came right to us like a pack of playful puppies. We were under sail -- no noisy prop churning the water -- and they came close aboard; ahead and astern. Probably laughing at our lumbering hull, so easy to outrace. Then they were gone. Like Mindy. "I love you, bye-bye!" It is a wonderful thing to have a wild creature enjoy one's company, even for a moment.

They are smarter than humans period. Difference is that we have arms and legs and can use them to develop technology while Orcas cannot so they evolved into harmony.

I think they were just having fun jumping in the stream behind the boat
I wouldn’t have slowed down to find out though!
I agree chasing a big fish 😂
I went on a whale watching tour once and killer whales were explained as really big dolphins. And dolphins love to hang out in the stream as it makes swimming easier.
Jennifer Rees Absolutely! They are just having fun in the wake of the boat. Leave nature alone and they will leave you alone!
Sue Brune I mean if I were the guy on the boat I wouldn’t stop to find out lol
Orca and dolphins are two of the few species that actively engages in games for fun. These Orca were having a game of chase and from the looks of it, they were encouraged by the reactions of the people in the boat.
They wanted din dins.
Orcas are dolphins
@@lennarthagen3638 I always understood that they were all members of the Porpoise family, but a different species within the family. Just as Homo Sapiens and Chimps are close species in the Ape family.
@@lennarthagen3638 And Dolphins are a type of Cetacean, as are Whales.
This interaction probably wasn't a game.
Teaching and practicing hunting techniques is a constant part of their lives. Orcas will continuously hunt and not eat the prey, hunting purely to teach and practice.
The flanking formation they were swimming in is identical to when they hunt whales by exhausting the whale in a long chase that lasts hours, and it requires a lot of coordination and tactics which has to be mastered through lots and lots of teaching and practice. And endurance is developed and maintained.
This was nothing more than a training day at Orca school and how lucky were those humans to have such an amazing experience.

They were chasing the boat because dolphins are known to enjoy "surfing" on the water behind boats OR in front of boats. Honestly, it's not exactly complicated.
Tilikum Skirata thank youuu!!! exactly!
That's what they said in the video did you even watch
Tilikum Skirata 5$
There were divers in the water and they got on the boat to get out. So it could be a kind of get out of my hood. Also different pods have different hunting techniques they learn from their families. Look up the orcas that are now targeting fishing vessels for food. It is really cool to see animals that are communal and teach their offspring about hunting grounds and hunting stratagies.
the_lusty_goat
The point is ... that they tried to treat it like such a mystery and postulate all sorts of ridiculous ideas. As they mentioned, Orcas are in the dolphin family, and like other dolphins they enjoy playing along the bow of the boat.
It is also no mystery why the dolphins had to move to the front... Orca trumps smaller dolphins. As far as the learning to hunt part, animal play always has a role in learning adult roles...
To treat this like some experts have just stumbled onto solving the mysteries of play is somewhat ridiculous. None of this is new. But people are good at putting themselves at the center of everything.
Maybe they were just having a damn good time in a wake of a boat!!!
Malamute Aerospace absolutely... they were just playing
Precisely. They're just playful animals.
Now you know common sense logic and knowledge need not apply when trying to entertain the masses. God forbid they come out and tell the truth! No one wants that! Must dramatize the situation!

Killer whales eat their dolphin cousins. Maybe somebody should ask the dolphins what they should be called.
Pandas of the ocean
Orcas
They do not attack humans and they are very intelligent. we always want to project our fear but their species survival depends on us understanding them:)
@Luna EB but orcas are extremely intelligent AND have exceptional eye sight for what they are and living in the ocean. They prefer fatter mammals, well a good deal of transient orcas diets are larger marine mammals. This can include other dolphins, sea lions, seals, and whales. I wouldn't doubt that they can see that our bones and lack of fat (mostly) wouldn't be on their menu

I don't like how this video tries to make the Killer Whales out as villains. It honestly feels like a hit piece in the beginning.
lol wtf you on? they are one of the most dangerous predator of seas try to swim with them and they will shred you to pieces
Tony scarface - There's not a single lethal attack in recorded history of a killer whale killing a human in the wild. Only few cases of whales bumping into boats where no one got seriously injured, one case of a whale grabbing a divers bag filled with fish and no one got even injured, and there's one and only case of a killer whale biting a human and the bite wasn't lethal. Stop talking out of your ass when you obviously don't have a clue what you're talking about.
Killer whales are really picky eaters and don't randomly attack anything they see even if they're hungry. They know a human from a salmon, and they're really friendly.
Journalists being Journalists nothing surprising here...Real journalist are extremely rare these days...
Pale Emperor and that is just in the wild.
Orcas are so smart, they use everything to their advantage :D
What's stunning about this video, is that the boat is making noise and creating waves to move at such a speed. The whales were barely moving and still reached that speed. Nature will always keep us wondering.
"ORCA-strated training session"
I see what you did there..
My dad lived off Puget sound as a teenager. He said he would “ race” the orcas whenever he could.
Wow! How much of a thrill would it be seeing that?! Huge, powerful animals chasing your boat having a damn good time! Awesome!
Orcas, like dolphins, 'ride the wake'.
Whoever made (narratored) this video has zero knowledge on orcas. Orcas are one of the pickiest eaters on the planet, they either eat specific types of fish, seals, whales, or sharks. Orcas on the north-west coast of North America are actually in danger of starvation because they are such picky eaters. Orcas also have brains almost just like ours, with language etc. and even a part that we don’t have that scientists believe is related to empathy. They would not in any way see this as “hunting”, they know that a boat is not something for them to hunt. (I’m a biology major in university and plan to do my thesis on the biological and psychological makeup of orcas, not pulling this out of my ass, I’ve done research for over 2 years on these creatures now, still have many years left to go though so if I’m wrong on anything feel free to correct me).
Edit: the zoologist made perfect sense, it was the questioning tone of the narrator that threw me off.
All the best i hope you find some great discovery something like a way to interpret there language.
They didn't say the Orcas were hunting. The zoologist said they were playing and this play helps to hone their hunting skills when they hunt as a pack. Did you actually stay around for the whole 3 minutes of the clip? Or has the average American adult attention span fallen below 3 minutes now? It's a BBC production which has the finest natural history unit in the world and is narrated by Chris Packham who has a degree in zoology and is a very well regarded natural history presenter in the UK.
John Bull sorry for my late reply but just a few things: first of all I’m not American so that was a general assumption and second I did watch the whole clip. The zoologist made perfect sense, what was irritating was the narrator. Now I am not british either so maybe that’s where my misinterpretation comes from but it almost sounds as if the narrator is challenging everything the zoologist is saying, which for me made it hard to distinguish what was to be trusted and not trusted from the clip from the point of view of someone with no knowledge on the subject.
quirkydobrev I'm still not sure what your point is. All Chris Packham did was lead the piece in to the final conclusion. What were the Orcas doing? Hunting the boat? A little a bit about their behaviour and then the conclusion. No, they weren't hunting the boat, they were learning as a group through play. I haven't got a major in biology but even I can understand that.

they're very intelligent animals, and there is no record of orcas killing humans in the wild. infact they're friendly towards humans in the wild, there are even videos of people swimming with wild orcas and orcas coming up to boats. these orcas were most likely were just curious and having sun with the waves
the only reason there is no record of them having not killed a human is that there is no one to survive to tell the tale....im not stating this as fact...only a possibility!
@@russellking9762 have you not seen videos of people swimming with wild orcas? people describe them as a 1 in a lifetime experience & they talk about how gentle they are. if a wild orca attacked and killed someone, it would most definitely be all over the news. wild orcas only show aggression when they feel they are in danger. if you don't threaten an orca, they won't threaten you. what you're saying is the equivalent of saying that since someone got killed by a tiger, there's nobody there to tell the world that a tiger killed a person. theres such thing as witnesses

The idea that Orca riding waves is practice for hunting is pure unadulterated anthropomorphic hubris. They're having fun.
But isn't the idea of whales "having fun" is also an anthropomorphic notion? The notion that humans and orcas have the same "idea" of what constitutes "fun"?
It's the same with cats. When they try to have fun they chase after stuff or fight with their siblings. They probably have fun doing so but they also train for a hunt or real fights.
@@Vic82toire V, I suspect GM knew exactly what he was doing, and was having a little bit of fun himself. I personally thought it was quite a clever comment.
@@pspicer777 Do you think so? A very limited exclusive sense of "fun" then. :)

It would clearly use less energy to travel further by riding a boats wake.
It's energy efficient.

I wonder how many people were like, “...there are no known cases of pilot whales attacking humans...” until one day 😳...
They are just playing. No expert needed for that.
It's probably safe to assume that like most predators, orcas just like chasing things that flee from them.
Exactly, just like sharks. If you think you can outswim them you might become their target. If you stand your ground and show them no fear, you are 99,9999% safe in the water :-)
+Na'xia Xi'Larn Not true. You are safer. But sharks are timid curious creatures. They like to "test bite" new creatures.
Hector Diaz they tend to swim and observe first, then bump into things first to feel through their receptors what things are and then test bite. They dont bite if you dont act like a prey.
+Kaiser Frost : I don't think that's safe to think like this. Or at least to imply that they chase each thing that flee from them, like in the case of a boat. The fact they enjoy chasing sometimes doesn't mean they enjoy chasing boats, since they certainly don't; they just follow them and benefit from their inspiration to move fast without spending much energy, adding the playful aspect. If you've done endurance sports with partners, you'll understand how much it's more motivating to have a focus, than to have no objective or doing it alone.
Not necessarily true. As mentioned in the video, Orca whales aren't whales. They are members of the Delphinidae (dolphin) family. This behaviour isn't abnormal for this family. It's called wake riding. Dolphins ride at the bow of a boat (bow riding), while Orcas ride in the wake (wake riding) because they are too big to ride by the bow. The wake also generates larger waves for the Orcas to play with. Like Dolphins, they have been known to emit higher pitch frequencies when having "fun" in activities like this. They're just big, adorable Dolphins who are enjoying some nice waves.
The Orca is the closest thing we have seen to an intelligent extraterrestrial species from another realm
Killer whales are intelligent, orcanised, ruthless. Hahaha! I like it.
Perhaps they were trying to get in front of the sound of the engine. They hunt by sound and the huge engine must have been producing a massive amount of noise at that speed. Only way not to hear it is to get in front of the propagating waves. Especially in water that sound can travel for kms - imagine an air horn continuously being blasted - no fun. (hope it was just training but I have seen research to whale species having to change the frequency of their "voices" to overcome noise like this)
Literally a dumbass you are xD
Gotta love how everyone just dismisses what the expert says and come up with their own hypotheses in the comments 😅

The whales have learnt to do this due to the scummy tactics of tourism boats deploying whale-baiting, so each boat that comes by is automatically seen as 'free food buffet'... which is why other marine life is now also harassing, even boarding boats. They're not training, they're waiting. Whoever started it should be weighted down by a concrete brick and pushed overboard with whales en-tow.

@Zees Chan They are called killer whales not because that is what they are, it's because that is what they typically eat... they are whale killers. But yes it's common knowledge they are from the dolphin family.
May they rule the world!
One time I took my 6 year old son to an aquarium with Killer Whales. One came up to the window and was checking out my son. People were saying isn't that cute, and I know Killer Whales don't prey on humans, but I just had the feeling the Killer Whale thought of my son as lunch.
Funny you saw that. I used to work in a large carnivore facility, lions, tigers, cougars, ect.
Tours came and went- it became apparent that certain types of people got a lot of attention from the cats. Children, especially babies. Any sort of handicap- even mental ones that were not obvious at first. Elderly, menstruating women.
If you tuned in to the cats, you could begin to see from their pov. It makes sense, predators always evaluating the herds for weak links.
My favorites were clueless mothers holding babies up to get a better look at the cougars. The cougs ALWAYS were so "friendly".
Usually the kid would start crying, and mommy thought is was just precious.
Orcus: hi human, I'm a giant dolphin.
Human: ( turn his back )
Orcus: (chump) tasty.
Nah. Orcas have never attacked a human in the Wild. Only in captivity - their trainer. There are plenty of people that go dive with Orcas in the wild.
There are even businesses that offer anyone a swim. They drive you to Orca location, find them and then you dive and swim near them. Often they will come to check you out and if you are lucky they might play around and swim with you. If not - they will just avoid you.
Not chasing, surfing the wake... have had dolphins and dolls porpoises do the same thing. Its really cool! Oh, and killer whales eat seals, not humans...
I bet if one of those boat seals were to have fallen off and it was recorded you'd think differently
Tyrion Lannister people wind up in the water with Orca all the time. Lots and lots of recorded wild close encounters every year. I am not aware of any incident of a wild orca attacking or harming a human...
@@rronmar
So you have no evidence to support this claim?
Just because they're dolphin's largest relative doesn't mean they wouldn't.
They act more like cats with their prey.
So, by that reasoning if house cats were the size of a jaguar, panther or tiger, we should assume their carnivorous bloodthirsty nature wouldn't extend to humans as prey, wait those cats will kill us and eat us.
Hmmm, evidence to support my case.
How about that? So where's yours?
Tyrion Lannister a cat is not a orca, different environments and most importantly different evolutionary conditioning. Evidence that something DIDN’T occur? I don’t have to prove anything, you need to prove that an orca in the wild has ever attacked a human(if it bothers you that much). We have been interacting with orca in the wild for centuries with no recorded attacks that I have ever heard of. I am sure if there were, someone would have spoken up here, so good luck with your research:) considering we interact with them on a DAILY basis, if it has ever happened it would be nearly unmeasurably low odds...
Based on evidence your odds are certainly greater that another human would kill AND EAT you before a wild orca did, evidence throughout our history certainly proves that...
On the other hand land carnivores throughout our evolution have(and still do) hunt humans. Basically on land, WE are the seals and salmon:) It was not until we developed enough brain power to create tools to push us to the head of the food chain that we ceased to be as easy a meal. We still are, without our tech... Big cats do not eat insects that I am aware of, it would certainly not be typical for them to do so. Our relationship to the orca is probably like that, we just are not on their food radar...
I have sailed from the arctic to the antarctic, you need to get out on the water and live/experience a little more of our cool planet...
@@rronmar
When did I mention insects?
Second, so you would swim with wild orca whales?
It's nice you've been to both poles.
Have you shared pictures online of it?
And as for showing proof that orca's would eat us, I'd rather be on the side of not in the water with them if I have the choice.
Just in case they would.
That reminds me of a shocking story someone told me for an owner who had a giant snake (no idea what kind) and he left another friend sleep on his house without him and with the snake in it's tank. The snake got out of there and the guy woke up and saw the snake lying next to him on a straight position. He though it was playful and told the owner that so he got an answer from the owner: The snake was checking if it could swallow you.
Orca: Hey humans. Train us with your boat.

Orca whales are not whales. They are members of the Delphinidae (dolphin) family. This type of behaviour are variations of bow and wake riding. The orcas are riding the waves produced by the boat. It's a common thing that dolphins do. It's in their nature.
Zees Chan they actually kill whales...
Zees Chan no problem. It's really interesting because their name originates from many different places. In North America the Haida call them "skana" (which is a reference to a killer demon) and the Aleut people call them "polossatik" which means "feared one". Most of the origins of their name comes from their massive size, group oriented hunting methods, and their colour/appearance (mostly black). They were seen as massive demons in the water, essentially, and even the scientific name (Orcinus orca) comes from the Roman god of death and the underworld (Orcus). The killer part thus comes from the indigenous origins. The whale part actually comes from the classification itself. From the beginning they were associated with whales because of their size, and wrongly classed as whales. Yes there was a bit of a "they kill whales" part, but most of the origin comes from indigenous classification and wrong family/species classification.
What I heard is that Killer Whales were a translation mistake. It shoule be "Whale Killers" wich means that these animais kill whales to feed
court kendell uhhh yeah. it said that already
court kendell This is why you should wait until the video is over before you comment on a video. Your comment is paraphrasing at best.

We’re oblivious to how smart these animals really are...I think the blue whale is the Tesla of the water.
