Never Step Off Your Bike Again

- Learn to ride up and over obstacles in the trail - never step off your bike again to carry it over a rock or log. As mountain bikers, most trails have some sort of obstruction on the trail, and this video will teach you everything you need to know about riding up and over them safely and in control.
Using the unweighting technique, we can learn how to lift our front and back wheels off the ground. This is an easy skill to practice on flat ground, and then you can adapt it to larger and larger obstacles as you gain confidence. I learned this skill the exact same way, using curbs and a stack of pallets to slowly build up the skill.

We're now done with home practice. It's time to apply it on the trail.
Awesome!! Have fun!
Glad to find your channel again I love watching your expertise skills and I as a novice i just started riding my mountain bike again i stayed off it for a few months due to the loss of my dog koa in September may my beautiful boy be in peace ❤🦮 I knew i needed to get back on it and that I did it will help me a great deal to get back into MT biking and practice what you have shared because practice makes progress 🚴thank you Aaron ..
✌️🤙🚴
Glad to hear that you're back on track - so sorry to hear about your dog.
Thank you for the tips. I specifically loved the tip of using the height of the object to calculate the distance you initiate your technique. Great stuff brother !
Thanks so much!! Glad you liked it. Still stoked from our podcast chat last week!
I have certainly improved my riding , thank you sir
I’ve applied your teachings to my daily ride
Wow, that's awesome! So glad to hear it! :)
Thanks!
Wow, thank you!
I love your channel. Your personality and delivery style is really good. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge!🤘
Thank you so much! 🙏
I needed this. Thank you.
Keep up the awesome work 🤜🤛
Thank you, so glad it was helpful! Have fun!
Going back over this something I missed before is the importance of dropping your heels as you move back.
That might sound obvious to long time flat pedal users but not to me. I've only started just started using them for training after 30 years of cleated pedals.
For me it was instinctive to keep my feet level at all times and I was struggling to move my hips back far enough to un-weight the BB.
I'm sure one of your other videos mentioned it and now I can finally lift my front wheel like everyone else!
Awesome! Your footwork on flat pedals will make a huge difference, for sure. Not only the forward and back, but the side to side can be helpful for balance.
Good stuff, love the short format as we all have many vids of various topics to get thru each day.
Thanks so much - I try to get straight to the point and focus in on only the most important bits. Glad you liked it!
Love the quote, practice makes progress
Thanks! One of my favorites, too! Also up there: Long term consistency beats short term intensity.
Try to do this with pedal up from stop position before the log ❤🎉❤🎉❤
I like your way better than the old days when we’d clear the tree with front wheel putting the cogs (chain ring) on the tree then just pedal through. Puts the bike right over.
Been there, done that too! Still use my chainring from time to time, to be honest. :)
Love your videos BTW trying to get back into riding and at 52 now it’s harder than I remember!!
@@SuperRiderTVlove your videos BTW
Nice Vid of the Series.
Could you do a Video on Manualing? Its not really a necessaire technik but itsnreally fun.
Compared with dolphin jump, you can use this skill jump over obstacles at slower speed.
It is the same mechanics as a punch to get up steep rocks or to clear a boulder. Log hops are more difficult bc you have to stick the landing immediately on the other side and push the bike through. On 2" logs or above I do more of a front wheel on top and replace w rear wheel tech. That does take front wheel braking when the front wheel lands to gather the hips thrust to lift the rear wheel up. That pause allows me to control my speed so I can land the front wheel under control. It is tricky and few riders execute those techs anymore. I started ridding many years ago before mtb trails were in most states. You had to learn to clear logs on hiking trails or you'd be walking A Lot. Great vid. Most logs are bump and rollers like you showed.
Spot on! There's a move in trials called the "lunge" or "wheel switch" (depending what side of the Atlantic you live on) that is super similar to what you're describing, too. One of my favorite moves to do on any bike! There's a version where you do that wheelbase hop forward and land without brakes, and it feels really cool when you get it right.
@@SuperRiderTV Lol. i meant 2 "foot" not 2" logs. I ma keyboard impaired.
You thinking lunge and a wheel swap, Aaron?
@@Sunspot-19 Not a trials guy, so thanks for the correct terminology.
@SuperRider - what gear ratios do you use when doing all these great drills and tricks?
I'm usually in my fourth gear (typically the same gear you usually ride wheelies in) - just the right mix between "easy enough" and "enough power to move the bike".
You know when your front wheel hits the log, it momentarily stops the bike, do you use that momentum to help you powerfully shift your hips forward?
Yeah, absolutely: that's exactly the point that I shift my body position. Great call out!
Practice makes progress, and brakes only slow you down.
Sometimes downed trees are built up to roll over but when you encounter these practice this technique instead of rolling it.
How's your brakeless coming along? Frankly, I'm skeeered to do brakeless!!
@@Sunspot-19 Laying off the brakes does remove a crutch and expose some things. I've never tried true brakeless, might be fun to try for a few days next bike build.
True brakeless, I haven't done intentionally however, I am very conservative in using my brakes for many situations. Much can be done without using them. The more unified a rider is with their bike, the more they can stay off the brakes. All in good fun, nonetheless.
start of the bunny hop
Exactly!
No chainsaw needed here!

ebike? gross. just learn to ride.
These tips work great on any bike - I’m just demonstrating it to include e-bike riders as well
Glad you brought that up… recently got an SL. TOTALLY ROCKS…you can jump and practice for hours… that quick 0-20 makes for a great time… when you want to crush your lungs just turn off the battery
I've never encountered an ebike rider who could even keep up with me.
