Why The Weight Of Your E-MTB Doesn’t Matter

  • Have you been struggling to lift the front wheel of your e-bike? You might be chalking it up to the weight of your bike, but there's a good chance that's not what is holding you back. Your body position on the bike is the most likely culprit, and once you understand the principle of "unweighting" - it becomes much easier.
    This bike tips the scales at over 50 pounds, but thankfully I weight substantially more than that - and I can use my bodyweight to my advantage to easily move this bike around. In the next video we'll be covering the back wheel lift, definitely stick around for that - as the back wheel can be a little tricker to lift off the ground.

    Don't have an e-bike, but do have a bike almost as heavy with fairly long chain stays. Strangely enough, it helped me finally learn standing wheelies. Think that is because it removed every possible avenue for cheating, leaving proper technique as the only option.

    Thanks for this video! I own an e-mtb, an Enduro and since two weeks a street trial and once you realize that the principles are the same for any of these bikes, it's a big step forward to learning all these moves and tricks.

      Spot on! The same principles apply across every bike - sometimes people need to see it in action on that bike, but they'll quickly learn (like you have) that it works everywhere. Having so much fun with this bike already!

      Thanks so much, I really appreciate it! I am currently without an eMTB, but hoping to get another one in the quiver soon. Most of the skills I'm doing tutorials with right now should transfer to eMTB, though. Don't hesitate to hit me up here (or in the Discord) if you ever have any questions or want clarification on anything! Thanks again for the support!

    Your chainstay is 435mm.
    Many e-bikes have a much longer 455-465 chainstays and will require a lot more effort but the fundamentals taught here are the same. Great video

    Its all about geometry, balance and the ground geometry. I personally never liked overhanging handlebars, I put the grips on the fork center axis. For me I don't have to reach, there's no opposite effect and torque wise when you're pulling on the bars the handlebars are neutral. And way better for downhills. You can place your center of mass over the rear axle if you want to lift. Not such a stretch.

  • @audunskilbrei8279

    My e-mtb full-sus is easier to lift than my much lighter hardtail because the geometry is much more laidback.

    Thanks, Aaron for another very informative video. How do you like the Marin e-bike? I was thinking of getting the Marin Alpine Trail E2 two years ago before I bought my Specialized Kenevo SL Comp. I would have saved a lot of money but unfortunately the Marin was unavailable due to COVID. I like that it has a 435mm chainstay and is a mullet. It would have been more playful and easier to lift the front wheel.
    How are you doing? Any luck in getting support for your Super Rider project?
    P.S. I miss the intimacy and the community we had on Twitch.

    There's also the problem that many people are riding bikes way too big for them, at least one size up. The excessive reach makes things particularly tricky

    • @SeanLazer
      @SeanLazer 9 місяців тому

      I thought that was my issue, I'm a small guy riding a 29er. Borrowed my friend's wife's smaller 26" and my attempts looked and felt exactly the same. For me at least it's entirely a technique issue.

      Just saw a video of a 10 year old doing wheelie combos on a super73. He can only balance on it with one leg. It's unnatural but he is a pro.

  • @razorree
    @razorree 8 місяців тому

    But then, long chainstays make lifting front harder, making slow drops more difficult, how about other maneuvers ?
    first ebikes, last 10y, had long CS and short reach. Only now, last year, ebikes have geo more similar to analog bikes (CS 440-445mm) and longer reach (~470-480 for Large).
    I guess long CS helps you with climbs, but does it affect handling and make bike unwieldy ? (I have Levo gen3 and can't compare with long CS bikes).

    I've got a question. I am new to MTB and I am currently looking for a bike but...The biggest problem I have is the size of a bike to get. I am 5'8" (173 cm) with 68" arm span and 80cm standover. What reach and stack do you think would fit me to move around the bike and be able to learn some tricks as well as ride some trials or go to a bike park?
    One of the bikes I consider is Marin Alpine Trail XR so let's make it be an example.
    BTW. I love your tips. Currently I am training trail stand. You made some great tutorials on this topic (and many other) and I think I am starting to get it. It's pretty much the only trick I can learn as the bike (dirt cheap market bike I bought on a whim 2 years ago and... didn't ride it for over a year for...reasons😁) is way to big for me to lift the front wheel (I can't shift my hips over the rear bracket, it's just way too far).

    • @SuperRiderTV
      @SuperRiderTV  8 місяців тому +1

      Hmm, I would probably go for a Medium sized frame? That should be just right for you, but ideally you could get into a shop and stand over one of the bikes before you buy it.

    • @dctPL
      @dctPL 8 місяців тому +1

      @@SuperRiderTV You're probably right about going to the shop and standing over a bike. That's the best option I guess. Thanks👍
      BTW. As for the track stand. I've noticed that practicing it on a grassy area gives a little extra support for the front wheel and helps with balance so it can be a helpful tip for some beginners. Cheers😁

    • @SuperRiderTV
      @SuperRiderTV  8 місяців тому +1

      @@dctPL Awesome! I also recommend trying the trackstand on a slight uphill, this can help with the rollback portion as well. Have fun! :)

    • @dctPL
      @dctPL 8 місяців тому +1

      @@SuperRiderTV I have watched quite a few of your tutorials on trackstand. Unfortunately the rollback is beyond me right now (no matter what I do, rolling back feels so weird that I loose balance immediately) so I try to base on the pedal pressure , a little front-back body movement (as a cheap replacement for the rollback😂) and ballance itself. The effect isn't that bad (for a noob such as myself). I will try to add an actual rollback as soon as my confidence and overall balance improve.
      Thanks again👍

    Got an e-mtb myself. Not the best at lifting the front wheel. I am way better tho when it counts on the trail. Technique seems to click better. I find it slightly easier to maneuver a smaller size bike, but I wouldn’t consider a larger bike to be a deal breaker. Once you’ve got the fundamentals figured out, it’ll apply to any bike with relative ease.

    Nah, weight is relative and many DH rigs are heavier.. However; Many E-bikes look like they should be ridden by Patrick Star, and that is 100% unforgivable. 🥸
