    Hey Jeff. You probably won't remember me but we both competed in those trials events back in the day. I eventually went on to take over running the North American Trials Series and have been doing so ever since. I'm also the guy who built and directed the trials comp with Kenny at Bentonville last summer. We're doing it again this coming June. Anyway, thanks for spotlighting trials on your channel and helping to make more people aware of it. If you can make it to Bentonville in June, please seek me out to say hello. All the best.

    I'm not great at trackstanding, but just being able to balance for 1-2 seconds can make a huge difference on the trail. I find it super helpful to jump on the bike when on really steep or uneven terrain (allowing you to get your feet on the pedals before you go). I totally need to learn how to pivot, that would help a ton on really tight trails. After watching the trail boss videos on the punch, it's one of my favorite moves. It's like cheating a bunny hop or gaining a little more height. I find you want to hit the obstacle at the bottom 1/3 or 1/4 point on your tire. It's like a bigger version of hitting a root or a rock as kicker on a trail.

    • @JeffKendallWeed
      @JeffKendallWeed  2 роки тому

      Great feedback, thanks Nate! I find that the lower the punch target, the more you'll need to "bunnyhop". When I'm doing stuff handlebar height or higher, I try to go as high as I can with the target. The other day I got up a shoulder sized boulder doing this- front tire was hitting it around chest height.

    • @nmnate
      @nmnate 2 роки тому

      @@JeffKendallWeed Yeah, definitely. The taller the obstacle the higher you have to raise the front wheel. My comment is more where the front wheel contacts the obstacle. If you hit at 50% of your wheel diameter (the front), you wouldn't get any lift, so somewhere between that and the bottom would be where you get the best amount of lift to push the bike upward.
      For my skill level punching stuff that's like maybe knee height is a really sweet spot for practicing out on the trail.

    • @JeffKendallWeed
      @JeffKendallWeed  2 роки тому

      You are spot on with contacting the tire below the 50% mark. Heck, I'd say below the 15% mark is better- you need to be lifting the front wheel and then pushing it into the face of the obstacle. I usually get the bike steep enough so that it's between 0 and 15% when it makes contact. Any more than that and it's becoming a bump jump!

    Great video Jeff! Glad to see LMNT sponsoring you. Semi related question; with BB's getting super low, I find pedaling, ratcheting and even trying to hop and punch through really rocky sections to be increasingly difficult. Compressing the suspension, even with pedals flat, will sometimes cause them to catch or hang up. You have a minimum BB height you try to stay at or above, to ensure a bike is capable of this kind of climbing? I know both the Ripmo AF and Altitude are on the lower side, and you seem to like them....?

    • @JeffKendallWeed
      @JeffKendallWeed  2 роки тому +1

      Well, I'd say just go back and forth between the two. You'll learn more solid fundamentals with flats, but there are times when it's frustrating because things can be so tricky. Once you get frustrated, experiment with clips so you can have some successes, but then go back to flats to keep learning.

  • @silkamilkamonico
    @silkamilkamonico 2 роки тому

    Do you have to change your technique when you bounce back and forth from flats and clipless? I ride flats but have started climbing some more technical stuff than I'm used to and I'm finding my feet getting bumped off the bike and wondering if I should use clipless. I really like flats but perhaps learning with clipless too can help my flat technique in the future also. love the way you ride man it gets me stoked watching your videos.

      Hey Ray, that's a great question, thanks! I do NOT change my set up specifically for trials practice. It's pretty important to me to do most of my riding with my normal trail set up, as trail riding is my main focus. Once in a while I will cheat and "bike dope", but only when a particular feature is super tricky and I'm also trying to film it. • @JeffKendallWeed
      @JeffKendallWeed  2 роки тому +2

      You can actually improve your own balance massively! For me, my balance improved when I started consistently doing just 1 yoga class a week. Eventually I upped it to 2 classes, and that was a massive help. But really, the secret sauce is consistently 1x power/flow vinyasa yoga class a week. When I get my act together and incorporate trail running, my balance continues to improve. The best I've ever felt on the bike was the least I was consistently riding. I was riding 2-3 days a week at most, and instead doing 2 yoga days, 3 running days, lifting weights pretty heavy, and bike commuting 6 miles every single day.

      Sugar is most assuredly not your friend, but it is an aid for endurance beyond, say, 1.5-2 hours of effort. Below that, for shorter duration stuff; it's not adding any benefit and is just empty calories. For those sessions, or hitting the weights, Yoga (as J K-W suggested), etc... your body needs more salts, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and water. Our bodies are just big batteries and batteries need electrolyte to stay at peak performance. Sugar is not an electrolyte...

FYI I do use Ad Block, a Chrome extension, though I don't know how well this works as I do still see ads on other UA-cam videos. From what I can tell, when a video is chock full of ads, it's often the creator (or their multi channel network) adding a ton of ads beyond what UA-cam would recommend. Over the years, I've been more focused on building a more hard core, relevant following (rather than big numbers), so each viewer is still pretty critical to my needs.
