2016 KTM 690 Duke First Ride Review

  • KTM finds itself in the enviable position of having created a popular brand-within-a-brand with its Duke line of motorcycles. Don’t believe me? Take a look at KTM’s 2016 Duke line-up. Consisting of six different models (some of which, unfortunately, don’t make it to the American side of the Atlantic), the Duke line starts with the 125 Duke and tops out with the 1290 Super Duke R - yet still has room for a pair of Dukes in the displacement range that started the line in the form of the 609cc 620 Duke I. Before we go any further, we need to step back from the current KTM image to remember that, way back prior to 1994, KTM only manufactured dirt-focused motorcycles. The Duke was the company’s first street bike, and the meaty center of the 2016 Duke line is filled with that first Duke’s direct descendants, the 690 Duke and 690 Duke R.

      ***** Correct. I'm not old enough to test ride this bike yet. KTM has a strict rule about age and which bikes you can test ride. And I sure as hell wouldn't buy a bike without test riding it.

    • @arch417powersports
      @arch417powersports 8 років тому

      rc addict 25. You can test ride the RC390 and Duke 390 if you're 21 and older.

    • @siddharthrajkumar7619
      @siddharthrajkumar7619 8 років тому

      +archinuk417 Wow! Those are some really uncomfortable rules, at least from a rider's perspective. Where in Europe are you? I'm assuming you're in Europe. I am also assuming this is a government enforced rule.

    • @arch417powersports
      @arch417powersports 8 років тому

      Siddharth Rajkumar Actually in the USA. It's not government enforced. I think the insurance companies say that they don't want anyone under 25 riding a certain size bike for the demo rides.

    • @siddharthrajkumar7619
      @siddharthrajkumar7619 8 років тому

      archinuk417 I had almost typed "definitely not in the US" in my previous comment. That means the rule isn't government enforced, right? It's rather odd that you have to be at least 25 to test ride a 690. I mean 21 is a reasonable age too.

    Demoed this bike today. The tft display is impossible to read because of the angle it's set at. The brakes are wonderful and this bike needs to be revved out to be truly happy. The seat, although not plush, was surprisingly comfortable. Clutch is extremely light and easy to modulate. The ride was interesting...the ride leader had us doing 65 in a 40 mph zone.

  • @EpicHotCheese
    @EpicHotCheese 8 років тому +20

    There's a reason why bike manufactures don't bring their naked performance bikes to the US. Very few people buy them. When it comes to US, it's either big ass cruisers or full fairing sports bikes.

    • @zmcg1
      @zmcg1 8 років тому +1

      +EpicHotCheese Actually similar nakeds like the FZ and the Gsx-S series seem to be taking off quite well, I just don't think KTM in particular have the street clout to expand much out of their very limited sport/streetbike lineup. I figure if the demand is there with the standard duke 690 then KTM will probably invest the time and money in to bringing the Duke R here in the near future.

    • @brettsmith7939

      I know, I told my buddies that I was about to get a 690 and they freaked like "don't you will be sorry get a bigger bike. It's like they are afraid people will think they are pussies if they are caught on anything less than a 1000.

    • @zmcg1
      @zmcg1 8 років тому +5

      Screw 'em man, that 690 will probably be more fun than a cbr or Gsxr anyways. Not to mention it will to wheelies for days.

      @MrSlowestD16 8 років тому +1

      +UA-cam_Cheese That's a lie... Look at the s-triple and s-triple-R, look at the GSX-S, look at the PREVIOUS Duke 690. All these bikes sold pretty well in the US.

    • @streakfighter
      @streakfighter 5 років тому

      wtf are you talking about? theres a huge market for these bikes here, if all we have are full fairing sport bikes... those are the ones that sell. More of a demand than there is supplied.

    • @mramsterdam1000
      @mramsterdam1000 8 років тому +1

      chris dellolio the drz is good and fun, but it needs a lot of maintenance and your not gonna notice a big jump in terms of power compared to the 250. The Drz has a carburetor, and you'll have to clean and rejet it once in a year to keep the bike running good. In a nutshell:
      +fun
      +easy to ride
      +comfortable
      -not that much power compared to a 250
      -carburetor and maintenance
      -start issues in the cold

    I would take the Ducati HyperMotard over this but, it is more expensive and apparently unreliable as hell. This seems like a good alternative if it is reliable.

    • @Tooltrocity
      @Tooltrocity 8 років тому +1

      +BadShadd1 Ducati's rap with that bike has been so bad I'm having issues keeping the Scrambler on my list of potential bikes. I don't want to spend all that money and have a garage ornament. I haven't heard if the rest of Ducati's bikes are unreliable but it's definitely a sticking point in my mind.

    • @BadShadd1
      @BadShadd1 8 років тому +3

      I know exactly what you mean. The thing is, I had a 2004 Ducati Monster that I bought brand new back in the day and I never had any problems with it. But I only had it until about 7K miles. I wish I could have confidence in Ducati because they make some pretty cool bikes, but at the moment, I don't. I don't know if you follow the motovlogger "Snowcatxx87" but he had 2 hypermotards with nothing but problems. It was enough to steer me far away from that bike even though I REALLY wanted one.

    • @Tooltrocity
      @Tooltrocity 8 років тому

      BadShadd1 Actually, that was where I heard first about all the issues about Ducati's reliability. Then came the Google results with pages of complaints etc. Hard to have confidence when you read all of that stuff. It'd be one thing to hear they had issues, then they were resolved, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case.
      I'm not really much of a sport bike guy myself, but I have to say that Ducati's motorcycles look the part 100%, and I'm sure when they run properly they're top of the line machines.

    • @aluisious
      @aluisious 8 років тому +2

      +Tooltrocity They've sold thousands of Scramblers. If there was a big problem you'd be hearing about it. It's an older motor, which tends to be good as far as having the bugs ironed out.

    Just an observation....what's with KTM and single cylinder engines? why won't they go with a twin-parallel at higher displacement engines? what's the advantage of singles over multi-cylinders? thx.

    • @hellario2
      @hellario2 8 років тому

      +E.T.Fonhom eh, why not? Why does BMW continue to build inline 6 cylinder engines? Because they've mastered the design and there's no reason to start from scratch. Aprilia does V4 in their bikes while most 4-cyl's go with inline. Gotta stick to what you're good at.
      Glaring omission is Ducati. They annoy me by constantly making bigger displacement instead of reworking components. Cheaters.

    Cmon man, feather the clutch on the down shifts. Hopping the rear tire displays poor skills. If you did that on a bigger bike around a curve you could be eating the windscreen.

    Would I love one of these? Hell yes. I love the fact its a big single and has some beautiful details. The more important question is, would I trust it to get me into work day after day when its below 0*c or getting soaked every day? Afraid not. And for the price they ask for it, it should be a reliable commuter able to soak up the miles as well as taking a thrashing when required IMO.Maybe KTM's reputation is tarnished by its past bikes/reputation but I'm not convinced enough - not for £7700 anyway.

      Very happy to be proved wrong.... but only if using someone else's money! It can't be ignored that a MT07 is ~£2300 cheaper here in the UK (although I appreciate there are probably some better components on the KTM).

    An awesome street bike, but damn why can't they make a powerful big single that looks good? Why can't KTM read over a Café motorcycle magazine and get some ideas on how to make a single cylinder motorcycle look good instead of that gawd-awful 'Transformers' styling with the droopy-beak headlight pod. Triumph has the right idea with their new Bonneville line of twins and I'll bet they will all sell out this year.
