The Water Temple? BELOVED?! It's been hated up and down by everyone since the game was released. I still hate it. God, that level was such a ginormous slog
I remember getting through the forest temple thinking, that was tough but fair (those bloody rendered walls hid so many edges and doors), fire temple was straight forward......then the water temple.....
Xen did not age terribly. Xen was *always* terrible. People who were fond of it then suffered from Stockholm Syndrome (itself a diagnosis that aged terribly, as it was made up.)
The original Tomb Raider games had level designs that probably looked great but haven’t aged well. Their maps have very confusing layouts that spread and curve back in on themselves, often after taking you on a lengthy tangent. There’s also the fact that the confusing layout can make it really hard to figure out what exactly you’re trying to do. I get that you’re supposed to solve puzzles but they can get pretty frustrating if you’re not even sure what your objective is.
I quite enjoy the challenge of Tick Tock Clock... but I play purposefully hard games. Also... EVERYONE HATED THE WATER TEMPLE. Changing boots by pressing start was irritating to be sure but the main problem with it was the way you had to KEEP changing the water level over and over again. It blew.
@bbworks159 yeah, thats the vibe I got from it. He didn't mention anything specific about the facility level itself. You could maybe go into how it doesn't really work as a multiplayer level with the bottleneck in the middle and rooms with dead ends but he talks about the game's controls and graphics.
@paulcurran3661 I found the Facility multiplayer quiz fun laying proximity mines for people & watching them run through the level but I think he mentioned that
How about a list of the “8 best video games based on books”? A lot of gamers don’t know some of their favorite franchises are based on books and could lead to some of them furthering their love for said franchises.
I used to hate tick tock clock as a kid until I learned that I could slow down or outright stop the mechanisms depending on where the hands of the clock are when I enter the level.
When you look back at Crash Bandicoot, it definitely feels like a relief to know that the N.Sane Trilogy revision doesn't require you to clear a level without losing a single life to get the clear gems. The same can't be said for the colored gems, however.
What I liked about the Remake's version of Don Corneo was when he realizes Cloud tricked him, Corneo is more disappointed than upset. "Oh, you're a guy."
Although I am very happy about seeing the addition with Big Pidge in the videos. I am not sure if I can welcome Big Pidge with open arms and into my heart. You have to understand I have been hurt so many times before in the past, “One per list”, slime Jesus and slime devil. Each one has taken a small piece of me and left . Only the memory remains. I will let my walls down again but do not know if I can fully love again. Please Jules don’t hurt us.
The "Pal Key Backtrack" hit me pretty hard. When I was very young, I had MGS on the PSX and that's where I got stuck and then never finished the game. It was many years later that I replayed it and beat it but there was a big chunk of my life where I didn't have that closure lol.
I'd take ten water temples before I do the Stone Tower Temple. Put on a mask, play a song, put on a different mask, play the same song, pause, unpause, repeat, repeat repeat
Yeah, no one has ever defended the water temple. It would not be surprising if it literally was the most hated level in all of gaming. It wasn't challenging, it was just badly made, the placements of the water level changers was a terrible idea.
I mean, the Facility in Golden Eye was the only level I could reasonably do my one self-made challenge I called Assassin Mode. It requires 007 mode, and you set enemy health to 0% (one-hit kill), enemy accuracy to 100%, and enemy damage to 1000% (one hit kill). So, you have to kill every single enemy before they have time to get even a single shot off at you or you die. Fun times.
It's been a while since I played mgs1, but I thought using the boxes to ride the transport trucks made that slog more bearable. I could be wrong though, it's been a long time haha
I think the biggest "problem" is that the n64 went off on a totally different tangent than all the other consoles. Totally different controls. It's like being proficient in multiple languages. Not everyone can do it.
Ocarina Water Temple is why I'm not a bigger Zelda fan - I love LttP, it's been one of my favorite games since I first got my SNES. I got stuck on the Water Temple in Ocarina, never got past it, and haven't played a Zelda game since, other than replaying LttP and randomizers of same.
I’ve been playing a lot of Tomb Raider I and II and Turok 1 and 2 recently. I imagine today’s crowd would not look too kindly on some of these levels. Personally, I love them. Cistern ❤
Satyr level in Spyro 2: A Gateway to Glimmer/Ripto's Rage. I hate that one quest where you have to protect that old man. The level isn't _that_ bad, but that segment made me despise going through that gateway. Maybe there is room to "levels that have a single awful section, that made you hate that whole specific level".
What about bad games with surprisingly good bosses that make you question why was this amount of quality was put to just the bosses and not the rest of the game?

Screw the 3 level water system, screw the iron boots and no way to unequip them without going to a menu, and screw the crystal puzzles and no way to Z-target them.

I remember getting so pissed at myself that I couldn't do something so simple. I'd battled much more complex things in the years since and yet timing some jumps was giving me hell. My sibling roommate was having a good laugh at seeing how something once so easy had now become nearly impossible. Years later, I have not returned to that game and am still stuck on the same part. As for FF7, perhaps most of everything related to that momsnt in the game didn't age very well, though I feel it could've been much worse. I'm just disappointed that they took out the hot tub scene. Depending on the choices you make, it's alluded to that Cloud has a bi experience (after several encouragements for Cloud to move closer to one of the men in the tub, the camera pans up and away and no mention or hints are given as to what happened). This would have fit in with the constant theme of Cloud being hit on in Remake and Rebirth.

Tik Tok AND Water temple? Beloved? Did anyone actually put effort into this list because I'm pretty sure you meant universally hated. The water temple is a damn antique meme for crying out loud.
I’m pretty sure no one put any effort in this list. But this is What Culture Gaming, they’ve done this stupid thing before like how they said Zelda fans got confused about the 3 timelines all thanks to Hyrule Historia, when Hyrule Historia helped Zelda fans better understand the 3 timelines.
You’re not wrong. The only beloved Water level in Zelda is the Ancient Cistern in Skyward Sword. I played the 3DS remake of Ocarina of Time first, which made the Water Temple more bearable, and I think it’s good on 3DS, but is hated on N64. Another reason why the Water Temple is hated is because Ruto is its Sage. The very same Ruto you had to carry around in Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly. Granted, I also like Ruto, not only because she is hot as an adult, but because her character is strong as she goes into the Water Temple to free her people from Morpha’s Curse. She is a Royal Who Actually Does Something Trope.
I actually feel like golden eye holds up better than alot of people act like it does I downloaded the remaster and had a blast playing though all the levels from my childhood memories
