Kinda feel like you should have included Tetrist because it literally changes the way you see the world around you. Also I still want to see "games franchises that radically changed their genre/style"!
I was going to jokingly say Dots because I played it so much that the grid of dots was burned into my vision. It took about 2 days for it to go away. I called it “dots vision”.
Oh NOW I understand the name "Psy!" That was definitely some psychic future reading she used to know I would think exactly what Mr. Burns was thinking in that comment at that moment 🤣
Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition is also on Xbox Game Pass, and I highly recommend you give it a try. Even the second playthrough had me ugly crying at one point but in the best way possible that i really, really needed. Atul, where did you go my friend?
Dark Souls and Undertale are the 2 games I would say definitively changed me. My fine motor skills are utterly abysmal and I have a near-constant tremor in my hands. I never imagined I would be able to beat a Souls game but somehow, I did. As for Undertale, it was that long walk with the title track playing in the background and the text when you look in the mirror. At the very top of my list of tattoos I want to get someday is a few measures of that track with the heads of the notes in the shape of the save icon and, "Despite everything, it's still you," in a dialogue box below them.
Should have put Slay the Princess on this list. That game rocked my entire perspective on life. It really makes you pay attention to the choices we are presented in life.
It took me hours for death stranding to finally click for me, and I would put it away for months at a time.. but then all the sudden just a week ago I started playing it consistently and it's now one of my favorite games of all time!!
No mention of the Tetris Effect? It literally starts to make you see the world in a different way through awareness of patterns and geometry, which makes you see how the world is literally built.
It’s a personal one, but in FFVII Remake, Wedge introduces us to his cats. One is a calico named Smalls which freaked me out because I have a calico named Smalls.
8 to 10 characters that went back and forth between hero and villain but ultimately chose to be a villain, kinda in honor of Arcane if anyone knows who I’m talking about
Good stuff. Haven't played most of these games but I can see the legacy they have Left. And just like last week, I'll still recommend videoganes you had to play again when you were older or a few years later to understand/appreciate them more.
how about a list of narrative and gameplay genre combinations that we're somehow lacking. The big one for me is urban fantasy combined with party-based CRPG. If you sit down to game where you spend an hour or thirty in the character creator, it's going to almost always be traditional fantasy with sci-fi a distant second. But we have nothing of the like for urban fantasy. The closest we have to a CRPG urban fantasy is VtM: Bloodlines which doesn't quite hit the mark as character creation is somewhat limited and it's not at all a party-based game. Also, it's only one specific flavor of urban fantasy, namely vampires. The HBS Shadowrun trilogy is another near miss, but definitely focuses more on the cyberpunk side of things than the urban fantasy flavor. I'd love to see a sprawling, branching path narrative game like Baldur's Gate 3 ... but set in a modern-day setting... Earth or a world so close that on first glimpse it would seem to be Earth. either pick vampire, werewolf, witch, hunter, survivor, angel, demon, whatever right off the start... or come to a point in the game where you can play through a transformation from basic human into urban fantasy bad ass.... then collect companions along the way... do the whole story progression of a Larian, Bioware, Harebrained Schemes game... but just urban fantasy.
Honestly, the older I get, the more I start to see Metal Gear Rising's Senator Armstrong's point. Or more precisely the point the lyrics of the song playing during the Metal Gear EXCELSUS boss battle make.
2:14 -Snake would've told us not to vote for anyone at all. To forge our own future and not confine ourselves to resort to such a lose-lose strategy. With that said, I'm sure they would still get their votes, even if we all stopped universally voting. Prove me wrong
Syndicate. I genuinely belive that's the direction we're headed; where we're back to working/living/eating/sleeping under a single corporation, paying at the company store with company money. Already it's looking like Microsoft, Apple, Google, Amazon, Walmart, Huawei, Ali, and Temu.
8 contradictory videogame mechanics/features that shouldn't have worked, but did. Like NieR: Automata's combat system that is both great and weird at the same time
Geometry Wars. A minigame so good it spawned its own series. And as much as FFVII Rebirth is overloaded with dire minigames, I really enjoyed Queen’s Blood. I thought it was the best FF minigame since Triple Triad.
8 games that are like a warm hug. I need some wholesomeness
Spiritfarer, which is in this video. Wonderful game.

“Don’t be sorry, be better.”
I’ve actually been saying that for years, before the initial reboot came out.
You can do both.
@ Indeed. Really, the more accurate sentiment should be, “Don’t ONLY be sorry”.
It doesn’t matter how many times you apologize if nothing changes.
Usually based on the situation, if someone says sorry to me, I reply with that exact sentiment. Don't be sorry, be better.
8 protagonists/Stories that dealt with illness in an empathetic and/or interesting way.

Spiritfarer 85% off on Steam right now too. Sold!
Spiritfarer is an absolute masterpiece. It is utterly beautiful and tragic at the same time. I lost days to this game and will do so again.

Atul, where did you go my friend?
Atul made me turn off the console and go for a walk. It hit so hard.
What’s going on with the terrible lighting mate..?😊

Psy's editing is absolutely top notch.

Nier Automata should be on this list
8 protagonists that we're treated so badly and went through so much suffering that they should really be the villain instead of the hero

8 games mistakes that made the game better!!!
