Best PIZZA in America | Frank Pepe's vs Sally's (New Haven, Connecticut)

- Опубліковано 4 лип 2021
- Faris and Lisa road trip to New Haven, Connecticut, which is considered the pizza capital of the United States, in order to try the top rated pizzerias; Frank Pepe's and Sally's. New Haven is considered the pizza capital because they have 6 nationally ranked pizzerias in a 5 square mile radius called Wooster Street. USA Today voted Frank Pepe's as number one and Sally's as number 7 in the US. Watch us try both and give our own pizza review and let you know if we think it is the best pizza in America.
New Haven Apizza is Neapolitan style with an extremely thin and crunchy crust thanks to the coal fired ovens. It's all about the tomato sauce and mozzarella or as the locals would call it, "MOOTZ".
New Haven has drawn a lot of attention in the past years as Barstool, Munchies, Thrillist, and USA Today have all reviewed their Apizza!

This is such a pleasing video and review!
Thanks Devdatta!
Love them both, but you missed out on my favorite, Modern Apizza, which is around the corner! Also the mashed potato pizza at BAR is amazing… There’s always next time!
We are coming back for sure and only heard great things about Modern and BAR! Jealous of the people that get that every Friday night!
the modern eggplant pie might be the greatest thing ever put on dough
I have to agree, BARs mashed potato (bacon) pizza is out of this world. I love the other pizza joints, but BAR is where I end up when I visit.
Bar is amazing period.... Sally's is my favorite.
Modern def not around the corner more like other side of town
That was great, 1st time seeing u guys, good stuff, fun, good chem., so hungry...!
Not just New Haven, but Ct. in general has SO many joints that are world class apizza, it's ridiculous.
Really enjoyed this video! Nice vibe. Subscribed.
It's a long way from New Zealand but one day I'll get there aye! New Haven is my favorite style, which I've been trying to emulate in my Maximus woodfire at home. Haven't quite nailed it but even average pizza is better than no pizza! So I'll keep practicing! Haha good times!
Thanks Sam, really appreciate it! So cool to connect with people all over the world. It’s a dream to do Van life in New Zealand one day!! I’m sure your pizzas are great, hope you make it over to try them out for yourselves!
I could live on the clam pie at Sally's. I was introduced to Sally's by my friend and never even looked at Pepes. The clam pie with a squeeze of fresh lemon is outrageous. Love it.
I came across your videos because I was looking up revels for myself! Diggin’ the vibe! I see you guys are making up north in my neck of the woods! Where’s the next stop?
Awesome! Our revel has been perfect so far! Headed up through Maine then back to our home state (Michigan). After that we will be making our way West. Are you planning on buying soon?
@@FarisandLisa Oh cool! I'm actually from Maine (kittery, york, ogunquit area), you'll most likely pass through my area (once you cross the i95 bridge from NH to ME)! Enjoy, lots of cool restaurants and cool views alongside the coast! Obviously lobster (or lobster rolls) are a must. I plan on buying, not sure how soon, hopefully by the fall! Need to do a lot of research haha.
You have to try the Fresh Tomato Pie that Pepe's has during the summer. End of June-September.
The real movie magic here is how they made a narrow 1 way road look like the Post Road. I’ve never seen Wooster street look so wide lol
Sally's is the best pizza in New Haven. But if your willing to travel to the next town over, try Zuppardi's in West Haven. Your not going to be disappointed.
We have only heard great things about Zuppardi’s! A huge reason to come back.
to me Sally's was terrible
This makes me proud to be a CT resident even though I have absolutely nothing to do with the making of these delicious pizzas.
Sally's to me is not the same pizza people talk about for years
I got hungry at 4:35 am in the morning watching you eat Sally's.
When comparing pies from different places, if possible, try to have the pies be roughly the same size. It is easier to have a really good small or medium pie than a large pie. It is hard to have a large pie that is baked consistently though out the entire pie. I grew up in the New Haven area and would say the argument as to the which is the best pie is kinda silly. It is just a question of personal preference and ones attachment and memories. When I walked through the door at Sallys, (pre covid), for a brief moment it is 1957 and I am there with my father. So, I can't be objective. Still, if you like apizza; New Haven is hard to beat.
hey Faris and Lisa.....nice review. Can i ask what kind of van that is?
Hi, yes it is a Winnebago Revel, Mercedes Benz sprinter :)
Great video! Try getting smalls or mediums. They cook a lot better, Less flop, they’re more crispy crunchy and chewy than larges in most cases.
We totally agree. The larges looked great for the video and still tasted amazing, but would order a smaller pie next time!
When you come to Chicago (living here 38 years now) if you like stuffed there are two places you could taste test.
Chicago pizza is trash 🗑
All those pies look way better than what we got in Florida 🤣
You gotta go to Brooklyn or New haven to get the best pizza! It’s totally worth it :)
The best to pizza places in Port Orange Florida are Giuseppe's and Alberto's
Good stuff! Gotta eat em fresh out of the oven; they’re a completely different pie once they hit the box, gets soggy etc… glad you got to try some New Haven abeetz! Try Ernie’s next time!
Next time we are getting a pie right to the table. Dine in was still not open when we went. We crave it everyday!
born in New Haven - Ernie's was always my favorite
We ate at Pepe’s today it’s always great! One day after Paul McCartney was there.
Sally’s no longer Sally’s, sold out. Should of had it when the family owned it, incredible. Pepe’s today is closer to the original on a good day. Nice clip…..I lived on Green St. till 2017, great location.
when did sally's get sold ?
I had Sallys today. Drove from NYC. It was so bland. I was so disappointed after all the hype
They both are great and stand very tall in the pizza world. I prefer Pepe's but if someone said let's go to Sally's I am going too. The best pies are the medium pies, I like the mozzarella pie but my two favorites are sausage and onion (they have great sausage there) and clam and bacon. Used to go for lunch there a lot, miss my Foxon Park birch beer.
They put a Pepe’s about 5 minutes from me in RI. Been going about once a month for 2 years it’s always amazing never ever got a bad pizza
Nice video, but no one local calls these places Frank's or Sal's. It's Pepe's and Sally's.
Unfortunately we are not local
@@FarisandLisa No worries. Glad you loved the apizza.
@@FarisandLisa its ok you're not local. Thanks for showing CT some love. Good job on video.
New Haveners often order a "plain". No Mozz!! That way you just taste the crust and the sauce. Another tip - order small pizzas - the crust is even better and you can sample a variety of different pies.
Finally, a local tip and this only works during a good snow storm - head on down. I've never found them closed and you can walk right in and avoid the long lines.
No the fuck we don’t
Spot on. At Frank Pepe's, they call it a "red."
@@ILruffian Interesting - a "red". I've been living nearby Franks for decades and never knew that.
@@d.t.1470 At Pepe's, the original is a tomato pie with only pecorino romano, no mozzarella. They will always tell you when you order "you realize this has no mozzarella, right?" I asked the waitress how I should order it to indicate that I realize what I am doing. She told me to order a "large red."
Did you really eat that whole Sally's pizza at once? It looked huge! Not sure about clam pizza, never heard of it but I would give it a try😁
You know we love the 🍕
Sally’s Apiz clam is the best, then again everything there is better! I grew up as a kid calling it, Apiz. as in, a pizza pie! Lol, I’m 71, never knew it was a Biz. Still don’t think that’s right?
@@stienmuller7295 so good! Lol we asked around and we are still unsure exactly how it would be pronounced. Either way the pizza was the best we have ever had!
The clam pie is amazing! Recommend having it with bacon added
@@FarisandLisa it’s pizza…say pizza. If you’re an old Italian that still calls Americans “matigons” or capicola “gabagool”then that’s a diff story.
Watching this is killing me. I knew this was gonna be torture. I NEEEEEED!!!
Everyday not being there is torture for us. Once you have it you can’t be satisfied anywhere else.
I was Born in NEW HAVEN, CT. Now i live in Maine. Had a Good slice in Portland at "Pizzaiollo" Try it if you can't get to New Haven. But... I'll NEVER FORGET PEPE's Or SALLY's!! BADA BING!!! Arrivaderci!!!
pro tip as someone who eats sallys religously and has since childhood and was part of the reason i started to study italian cuisine and pizza especially... NEVER get the largest pizza, as it will always flop. the smaller the pizza the more compact and less ingredients go on it thus cooking it more uniformly.. i literally have never had a slice of sallys or even pepe's for that matter, that ever bent or flopped like that.
This rivalry reminds me of DetroitMe American vs Lafayette Coney Island’s Coney dog war
Very similar. The pizza is so good
Sally's was our favorite that day!
Faris’ was Sally’s too! I like Frank Pepe’s cheese but Sally’s crust!
I'm planning a one week pizza eating trip from Greenwich Village to New Haven, there are about twenty "best" places on the itinerary gonna gain fifty pounds. Here in Kentucky best pizza is homemade so I'm hoping to learn some secrets.
They have a pizza school in New Haven. 3-4 hours on a weeknight. I've heard that it's great. You can absolutely do New Haven style at home. All you need is a pizza steel.
I'm a Modern Apizza guy and Bar Mashed potato & bacon is also great
Whoa! Better get the pizza King to help you. One bite, everybody knows the rules!
Ray Santiago is the coolest dude to ever touch apizza
Your review was right on the money. I've always preferred Sallys "traditional" pie. A little thinner, a little crispier, less cheese. Pepe's is great also, but they have a tendency to undercook by a bit, and since they load up the cheese it accentuates that. Their White Clam, though, is amazing. It's really in its own category and is much better than Sally's version of the clam pie. Pepe's is the undisputed white clam king. You also lucked out, because you got to Sally's before their quality control started going downhill. Since the sale and subsequent "expansion", they've lost something off of their "fastball", unfortunately.
I love Pepe's and Sally's, but you have to have Zuppardi's fresh-shucked clam pizza before declaring Pepe's is the undisputed clam pizza king. Zuppardi's beats it
All 3 Sally’s the spot and Pepe’s all owned by the bimontie family. Mr B’s is the daughter of old bimontie in Hamden
Good to know thanks for the info! 😊
Love my city new Haven 💪
You guys are lucky. They should start another branch in chicago.
Did the same thing you did just last weekend. Coming from NJ another great pizza state. Did a tradish pie at Sally's. A tradish pie at Frank Pepes 3 days later. Sallys beats hands down. Pepes too much cheese/grease/flop. PS brought 2 white clam pies home to my seafood loving peeps....they were not impressed.
Honestly we probably talk about taking a trip there about once a week just for the pizza. So good!! We heard you have to eat the clam pizza right away or it gets soggy!
Sally's is great if you like burnt pizza with almost no cheese...
@@chrissygerwitz520 it is a char and simple ingredients make it great. Overloaded cheese on pizza is pizza soup
You left the best New Haven Pizza out, Modern on State Street. Also, Sally's is know for their sauce vs. Pepe's.Pepe's is the most inconsistent to me, Sally's has also been inconsistent but Modern if ultra consistent. In NYC, I think Joe's on Carmine is number 1, Barstool likes Johns around the corner as number 1 and Joe's as #2. YMMV.
Yes, I prefer Sally's because of the sauce. Both are inconsistent but that doesn't stop me from going back.
That bite at 5:39 ahah wtf..
I also saw Faris edit the video
You need to try Bar on Crown St New Haven Ct brick oven pizza and they make there own beer too i live on York St 1 and a half blocks from Bar so I can meet you also Modern on State st good place too
Do you guys have an air fryer to reheat food?
No we don’t have room for one! Is there a mini one?
Where’s Lisa’s review? Who did pick as the best?
Lisa forgot her line 😂
Lisa here, Sally’s crust and bottom takes the win but the sauce and cheese from Frank’s is top notch. If I went back to New Haven I would pick Frank’s!
30 years ago yes, pretty good, now so many other better places all through Ct., Zuppardies different style, seems to have the secret to quality and longevity, way better taste plus they will fill fresh cannolis for you as you wait-Truly Ct.s GEM
Ohh good to know we will have to try that when we go back!
I watched the video yesterday
Sauce pizza 🍕 and the Frank's salad. At pepes 😍
We need to go back!
Is Sally’s better than Difarra’s?
Can’t make that call right now. Our last Difarra’s experience wasn’t great because of covid. If Dom the owner is back making the pies then it’s hard to beat.
@@FarisandLisa I also hear John’s on Bleeker street is right up there too, might be worth it for you two to check it out!
It’s two different style pizzas I’ve had Di Fara but not New Haven pizza I like my pizza thin and crispy. New Haven Pizza looks floppy but looks very good.
@@anthonycelano165 Sally’s was super crispy 3/4s of the way down. Super small crispy crust. I think that’s why I liked it so much. I don’t like doughy crust. Man I loved Difaras though when it is done right.
I am from connecticut, these places are some of the most expensive and overpriced pizzas you can buy and we are spoiled for choice here.
I tried De Fara's once...I was not crazy about it
Fuoco in Cheshire is on par with Sally's. Definitely the 2 best in CT
❤❤❤
Piante Pizza in Denver/Breckenridge got the best pizza in America 🍕
Idk brother… I won’t knock it until I try but we have had a lot of pizza. Colorado has a lot of Detroit style places and that is where we are from. We will put it on the list!
I see you met Ray, next time at Sally’s, ask for “The Ray Special” only people in the know, know about the Ray Special.
Now we have even more reason to come back! Thanks for the tip. Ray is great
What has me baffled is franks Cut into triangles. I live in New Haven and every time I get Frank’s it’s cut into random squares octagons rectangles etc.
😂 someone in the kitchen must be having a good time!
That’s the way a’BEETZ is supposed to be. It’s traditional and on purpose.
Lipizzaguru gotta try it
We will add it to the list!!
So Sally’s is really good? It seems like most people say it is. For some reason Daym Drops said it was garbage basically.
I wonder if he just got a bad pizza or if there’s something about their pizza that some people out there might not find appealing? Idk
Everyone kept saying Frank pepes, but I found Sally’s to be the best. Lisa liked Franks better. Who knows. Haha all were delicious and better than pizza I have had all over the world
Damn drops was trippin
It's because Sally's had next to no cheese on it and had very ordinary pepperoni. Daym loves Frank Pepe's and Modern, by the way.
Without Question Pepe’s is the best Apizza I have ever eaten, not even close and I have eaten Sally’s it’s good but not as good as Pepe’s😊
This is hard to watch. I die a little every time they call it Frank’s, and hearing “motts-ur-ella” 😫😂. But I’m glad New Haven is getting recognized nationally for it and thank you for making the trip to my home state
My favorite is Bobby's Pizza at my house.
Sally slices da best!
You're killing me! It's not Sal's it's Sally's! It's not Frank's it's Pepe's!
The pizza looks like my kids cut it.😃😆😅🤣😂😉
I swear they have their eyes closed. It didn’t take away from the taste though and kept us on our toes 😂
Modern, Sallys, Pepes, Bar - in that order.
We are dying to try Modern and Bar!
that is the first pizza on ur video taht look like a nice margaritta pizze
New Haven and New York have large Italian immigrant population roots and the you can see that by the pizza. It is very very good. Some of the best pizza in America!
There they say it like abeats
Apizza hoyeah!
It's very hard to say properly. I find it about half way between "apizze" and "abeets".
Not true. Biggest rivalry is between Frank Pepe and Modern Apizza. I’m a New Haven native. Born and raised for 24 years.
Hmmm 🤔 we will have to come back a try Modern. Seems like people are pretty passionate about a few other spots in the area as well.
Zuppardi's clam looks better than Pepe (Sally's also said to be better than Pepe).
Yuppies
Is it always just a cheese pizza?
One bite, everybody knows the rules.
Sallys is definitely the best without a doubt
& don't forget Modern pizza .. Or in Hartford county HARRY's
Don’t forget Modern Pizza
A good reason to go back!
Italian bomb from modern apizza
Giga chad look alike
You know your pizza
We definitely like our pizza 🍕
@@FarisandLisa Did you know that there are at least 2 Detroit-style pizzerias in Manhattan now?
did u see julia roberts?
Is she from there!?
@@FarisandLisa I am an old man. One of her first movies was Mystic pizza in mystic, ct. Ct being a small state figured it was close to where u were. I looked it up and it is on the other side of ct. Now u know the test of the story
Modern.
We gotta try it!
I’m assuming it’s on purpose to call it “sals” and “franks”
Psssst, clams from the can.....
Is that why they didn’t tell us!?
Umm why would they come from a can when there’s a million clam beds in the area. That’s why you can’t get a clam pie from there after a heavy rain storm since nobody is out harvesting
@@christophersim3673 he's right. They're canned clams. I used to deliver to all of the Shitty of new Haven.
Amerigans, Traditional is only Pecorino cheese, Not Motz.
abeetz and you forgot Modern
Modern is better uses Grande Mozzarella
Calling New Haven the pizza capital of America - is just repeating Dave Portnoy. The reality is that if you are hungry - most pizza places across the US have great pizza. The ranking system just depends on the individual. I love Detroit Style, Chicago Style, Neopolitan, New England Greek, etc. There are a lot of different styles - but ranking pizza still comes down to personal taste. Other than an Italian Margherita - I prefer pizza with 2 or 3 toppings.
Jeff, we totally agree there are so many different kinds and types of pizza. We especially love Detroit style since we’re from Detroit. But after traveling and trying different pies across the US and many different countries, New Haven came in #1 for us in our personal opinions regardless of Dave Portnoy’s decision. Remember there were many pizza reviews well before his time. We all get a chance to review our own favorite pie 🍕
Spell Wooster nonnewe gkanger knows it’s town in western mass Worcester
Sally’s is better facts
Faris agrees. Better pie
Sallys all the way
Faris is 100% with you I love the cheese at Pepe’s though!
Hearing them say "Frank's" and "Sal's" made me lose my mind.
Doesn’t offer a piece to the stranger watching the review😕😕🥶
So much carbs....😭. It’s a pie
Put us in a food coma
Faris is Italian? He looks like an Arab or middle eastern!
it's sally's not sal's
Sally's not Sal's. Pepe's not Frank's
Abeets is the only great thing about Ct.
I live in CT I moved here from NYC you have to be crazy love ur video NY has the Best pizza hands down its in the yeast and water. No disrespect I've been here 5 yrs and still drive over to the lower east side or the bronx to get a real slice of pizza. Again great video
What is your spot in NY? We love Difaras in Brooklyn, but has not been the same since the owner stopped personally making each pie.
@@FarisandLisa Amore in Flushing is my favorite pizza in NY.
Here's a video of it. ua-cam.com/video/LtM3nZijPSE/v-deo.html
@@danlivni2097 same Amores, where path mark used to be, opposite side of toyrsus lol... & I live in CT & Sally's is what I like in CT. I need to try modern... but Amores one of the best pizzas... when I think of pizza Amores pops up in my mind..
Sally's is the best in New Haven. It's not even close
No no no it's Sally's not sals and peppe'snot Frank s get it right
Sally's 100% over Pepe's
Why risk getting murdered to eat pizza?
