Eating at Modern Apizza. New Haven, CT. Better Pizza than Frank Pepe and Sally’s?

- I eat at and review Modern Apizza in New Haven, Connecticut. The historic pizzeria is considered to be among the best in the city as well as the country. It was recently named “The Pizzeria of the Year.” I compare Modern Apizza to the other top pizzerias in New Haven such as Frank Pepe and Sally’s Apizza. In addition, I get some ice cream at Arethusa Farm Dairy before exploring the amazing Yale University Art Gallery.

About Me: I live in NYC and I’m about food, travel and work.
Ok so here's the thing. I'm a die hard New Yorker. I'm very proud and defensive of our food culture. But I just can't deny it. Connecticut has the best pizza in the USA. And not just the famous places like Modern or Pepes. The bar is insanely high. I know I might get flamed for that but it's true, at least for me. Great review as always James!
Thank you! Yeah, Connecticut is definitely a special place for pizza!
Yale’s art museum definitely isn’t your typical ‘college gallery,’ so I’m honestly not surprised at the variety in their offerings
Yeah, it blew me away!
@@Jamesnu The best museum at Yale is The Peabody museum of natural history.
@@satinbarbi I'll check that out on my next visit. Thanks for the recommendation!
The char on the crust! 🙌Thanks for letting us hear the “music to your ears” and for tipping us off for a fantastic day trip to CT!
Thanks for watching! I really appreciate it!
No one is doubting your ability to finish a meal, really good deal and pizza review
Thank you!
The pizzas at Modern are substantial. I only ordered their smallest pie and even that filled me up pretty good
Next time you’re in New Haven, give Zuppardi’s a try. Definitely go for the clam pie there. Modern’s eggplant pie is my all-time favorite out of all the New Haven places, though.
Thanks for the recommendations! Yeah, I definitely want to try Zuppardi's next.
Eggplant pie sounds good. I like tomato sauce on my pizza. Would they make me a clam pie with sauce?
Zuppardis is my favorite as well, Mike’s Apizza is a classic, since 1934 near old Savin Rock, West Haven. They get lost in the shuffle we have the best spots in the country.
Top 2 Zuppardis favorites....
1. Sausage and Mozzarella
2. Tomato, Eggplant, Mozzarella, Basil, Garlic. (Red Sauce)
@@jameskonners8304 Nice! Thanks for sharing!
You do an excellent job with your reviews! I enjoy these.
Thank you so much!
I like that you included the trip to the art museum in addition to the food content. Maybe on a food excursion near some of New York's museums you could drop into them sometime and take us along for the ride! :)
I'm glad that you enjoyed it. I'll definitely try to incorporate some of that into my future videos.
You have again proven why your channel is one of the best out there. Great videos!
Thank you so much!
This place was my neighborhood pizza place growing up. Italian food was still considered to an exotic cuisine by my parents
So we didn’t go as often as I would have liked when I was young. Very good pizza. Pizza place decor. Just what you’d expect.
Nice! That definitely makes a place a bit more special to have those memories associated with it.
You came back to my city. Now its time to see the underrated spots. We have great restaurants throughout the city. Whenever at Modern you need to get the Italian Bomb. We always pair our pizza with Foxon Park soda.
Thanks for the recommendations! I definitely want to check out more places in New Haven!
Great video James! New Haven looks like a great cozy city and apizza is iconic
Thank you! I've really enjoyed New Haven and not just because of their incredible pizza establishments.
Wow, that looks so great. I'm not a pepperoni guy, but I'd make an exception for that one. Another really good one James. Sending you Thanksgiving wishes. This year, I'm so glad I found your channel. Cheers 🍷
Thank you! I hope you have a good holiday as well!
I was there a few days ago, and it was bloody busy. The atmosphere was delightful. Now, the only problem was that they were making them so fast, that they neglected to rake out the oven every now and then. I didn't get just char, but also a burnt dust top and bottom. Nothing a napkin couldn't fix, but it made for more work. Fork and knife until I got up much closer to the crust. Took the leftovers home, and pizza yesterday. It comes back to life rather nicely.
Modern, Sally's, Frank's -- It's New Haven. It's good. I also like NYC pizza, and have a place nearby that makes a banging good interpretation of it.
Pizza. It's good. 🍕
That's a shame, because their pizzas normally seem to have such great char. Still, without it, I would imagine it's still pretty good.
Great video James. Cant go wrong with pizza. You ate alot more than I could've lol. Love art galleries. Definitely had some great artists there. We recently went to the salvador dali museum , saw some amazing works of art
Thank you! That is one museum that I've got to check out in the future. I'm a big fan of Dali.
you did another great video for us,i worked in 3,5 star Restaurants in new haven as a bartender and your in the right place my friend for Pizza!
Thank you! Indeed! New Haven is a special place for pizza!
Yay James...another drool-worthy vid. As a kid growing up in Jersey City, I was struck by the fact that everyone I knew referred to their fave pizza joint as a source for Apizza. Maybe the New Haven influence had an impact on us...lol. Thanks for making the trip and doing what you do so well. Cheers!
Thank you so much! Yeah, sometimes it's hard to pinpoint exactly which pizza influenced what.
Ilventos on west side Ave had the best pizza in the world in my opinion - to bad it closed down
YUM! 😋😋😋😋😋
Safe Journey! Cholula has been dethroned. Yellowbird Blue Agave Sriracha!!!
It was very good! Thank you!
Thank you, this made me miss my home city. I’m a Modern Girl and I can’t believe you ate almost the while apiazza 😂.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, I probably should've ordered a size smaller, haha.
When I was younger, a good friend of mine moved from NYC up to New Haven, so I spent a lot of time up there. It was my first time having a "mashed potato" pizza! They have a great pizza culture up there. Thanks for another great review!
Thanks always for watching! Yeah, they do have some pretty unique toppings up there.
I ride my bike on the canal trail from Cheshire. Have a medium modern mushroom pizza then ride back. It’s my perfect day. Thankyou for sharing
Nice! That sounds like a great day! Thanks for watching!
Also, if you're gonna hit up the museum, you could also side-trek to Atticus. Their bread is great, and the bookstore is reminiscent of a trendy coffee shop near NYU.
Thanks for the tip! I'll keep it in mind for next time.
thanks for sharing, your videos are fantastic
Thank you so much!
Looks amazing! How the hell do you not weigh 400 lbs eating as much as you do?!?!? I'm jealous! I gained 5 pounds just watching this video!
Haha! I think I got lucky with my genes, but I'm also a big runner. Yeah, the pizza was amazing!
That pizza looks incredible; I took the trek from NYC to New Haven a year+ ago for Sally's and its always a little silly to go so far for pizza but it was delicious.
I waited on line for about 90 minutes for Sally's! For the Tomato Pie: Sally's, Zupardi's, Modern, Pepe's. For the Clam, Zupardi's, Modern, Sally's and dead last Pepe.
I know what you mean, especially when there's great pizza in NYC, but New Haven is still a nice city and has other stuff to offer besides pizza.
Glad you made it up there. I went there a few years ago. Had the clams casino. One of the best pies I’ve ever had. And Sally’s is the ultimate.
Nice! That's the pizza that I've got to try for my next visit.
As much as I can feel stifled in my city (New Haven) and desire a change of scenery often, I love seeing people come to enjoy one of the few things we're known for outside of Yale 🍕. Sally's, Frank Pepe and Modern are all good, but there are a lot of other hidden gems sprinkled throughout the area. Connecticut style lobster rolls are also the best.
I'll definitely have to try a lobster roll on my next visit.
Lobster Landing is a must 🎉🎉
@@tartariantech Thanks for the recommendation!
I think the hot dogs are too.
as someone who lives in Europe and has been to Italy numerious times this comes way closer to what we in Europe consider pizza, specially with the black char
Nice!
get a room next time and enjoy.....some nice mornings.....there as well!
Yeah, it's nice in the morning as well. The first time I went to New Haven, I did just that.
Great review James! Pizza Viagra for the flop LOL. That made me laugh. Wow that Museum - Looked amazing .. so many amazing artists. Thank for taking us on the tour sir!
Thanks for watching! That was good pizza despite the flop. It was definitely a great overall day.
I actually just ate there last weekend! Vid coming soon on my end too, but your camera work made it look so good. Man I'm salivating thinking about that pizza again!
I'm looking forward to your video!
Nice! I can't wait to watch your video! New Haven, is definitely a special place for pizza.
I lived in Boston. After seeing your IG Modern Apizza post. I made a trip to Modern to try their pizza. It was really good. I like it !
Awesome! I'm glad that you liked it!
Overall I preferred Modern out of the their counterparts of Pepe’s and Sally’s which I totally did not expect.
Arethusa farms ice cream absolutely slaps, proud of you for finding it
Have you been to Rich Farm a little north from New Haven
Indeed, it was good ice cream!
@@NoahEats I have not
I look forward to your reviews thank you I am now craving pizza you are the best.
Thank you so much! I hope you get to enjoy some good pizza soon!
That pie looked great; definitely a place to try the next time I'm in New England.
Definitely, it's a must try.
That pizza looked amazing and I want some right now!!! So did the ice cream only I would have added whipped cream. Have to have the whipped cream on ice cream. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching! Yeah, whipped cream on the ice cream would've been nice.
Nice to relive my experience there, through your video, at Modern and more. I attempted to visit the art museum but they were closed for so long due to the pandemic. Perhaps I'll get a chance to check it out next time. I agreed with your preferences, Pepe's is definitely the best. I enjoyed Modern but it was a bit heavy. The Yale campus is gorgeous, I love New Haven.
Same here! I really appreciate New Haven. Yeah, during my first visit the museums were closed too for the same reason, but I'm really glad that I got to see the art museum. It was really impressive.
Let's all take a roadtrip!
I was there 4 times. And also the Sally's Stamford location. I recommend Regina's in Boston on the way up. @@NoahEats
Congratulations on going to modern because they have really excellent pizza and I also like that you mention that you don’t wanna have monotony like you can’t always do New York places just because it can get boring and it almost feels like there’s no other universe for outside in New York City. that’s one of the reasons why what I do food reviews, I love traveling to different states and other places.
Definitely modern is a really great option. The other thing that I like is that it looks like your video was filmed a while back. If you have a stockpile of videos that you’re trying to edit, no problem because it’s not good unless you’re doing a news channel to have videos every single day, it’s good to do it every 2 to 3 days so that way you’re not oversaturating or you’re like well have to do a video every single day.
Also, I’m re-watching your Pizza videos because I’m doing a Pizza project in New Haven and I really like how you do your videos and I also love your usage of voiceover that you do it in your apartment, versus the noisy pizza, restaurants or if you’re speaking and then people talk about you being a UA-cam celebrity and want your autograph.
And I also like your videos because it definitely it’s inspired me to travel to many different locations in New York City and even in Connecticut as well. Keep up the great work and I’m happy to have discovered your channel. The other thing I like about your channel is that you have a lot of positivity, even though life can be hard , and life has its every day stress, you don’t come on here, bitching and moaning, being cynical, or talking about your problems, because I’ve done my fair share UA-cam videos where I may review South Park, and be like well that’s inspired by this thing or that thing that I had overcome in my life. I like that, you have a great online presence and also your positivity is very charismatic, but also it shows a lot of maturity because if you’re going through some thing, I’m happy that you don’t bitch and moan because there’s a lot of people who bitch and moan about their problems on UA-cam, you’re definitely one of the mature ones, something that I still need to work on being
Thank you! Once again, I really enjoyed your comment. Yeah, the way how I upload videos is not necessarily the order in which I've filmed them. I always want to keep things interesting with my videos and not upload ones that are so similar to each other.
I always try to stay positive when I'm filming, but I definitely have problems, I just don't think that most people want to hear about them especially if they're not relevant to the situation.
@@Jamesnu I totally agree. Because it becomes bad habit. And then also the other thing that I’ve learned is that I think your channel has a really good formula, so definitely don’t break the formula, and then includes staying away from personal drama, but you don’t need me saying that because that’s more of a lesson for me.
I also like that you do food reviews and I’m not sure if you have any other ideas like I review, professional, wrestling, food, reviews, television shows, and other things. But I know sometimes it’s good to stick to one genre.
And I’m very excited that I’m gonna do a Pizza comparison video in a couple weeks, so I’m definitely gonna study your style because I like how you do things
@@FreeSpeechArtandWrestling Nice! I'm looking forward to your pizza comparison video!
You look like you have an insane metabolism. I'm jealous! The pizza looks great, I'm a new subscriber and really enjoy your videos thank you. Me and my husband are coming to NYC for our anniversary next year and I am using your videos to help plan where we eat!
Thank you! I really appreciate that and I hope you have a great visit in NYC!
You are doing a great job with your restaurant videos.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
Good review. Impressed you ate almost an entire large pie. True foodie.
Thank you!
I've never tried New Haven pizza, but it looks amazing!! Great video as usual. I always look forward to your reviews, but I'm dying to hear your opinion on L'Artusi! I liked it but wasn't blown away. I hope it's on your list to review 😉
Thank you! I really appreciate it! Yeah, it's definitely a restaurant that I will review in the future.
After that ice cream and coffee, a Havana cigar would have been perfect!
Yeah, that would be the icing on the cake for my healthy day of eating. Haha!
You did an admirable job taking down such a sizeable pizza!
He demolished that apizza!
I try!
I know that if I ate there maybe an hour later I could've finished it, but still, I have no regrets.
When I lived there, slightly over 50 years ago, the general reputation was that Sally's was best for clam apizza, and Pepe's and Modern were about even for everything else. Some people preferred The Spot (not mentioned; are they still around?).
It was pretty much accepted that you really couldn't go wrong anywhere. I'm glad to see that they restored the train station.
Later on, Frank Pepe's opened branches in places such as Waterbury and Yonkers. There is debate about the quality of the branches, but Pepe's in Yonkers is just fine for me. My shame that I've never been to Modern.
Yeah, I've heard people debate about the quality of those other Pepe establishments as well as the other locations of Sally's. I always feel like the original locations do maintain something special to them. I love their historic feel. Yeah, I'm happy that they take care of the train station because it's such a nice building. I took a number of photos when I was there as well.
looks great
It was an amazing pizza!
Swipe Right! Now you need to include Zupardi's! Another solid video!
Haha! Thank you! I definitely have to try Zupardi's too.
Nice review James. I actually prefer Pepe's as contrasted with the other choices (although all good). Nice to see you are going outside NYC limits for food tasting. BTW, I see you wear Persol sunglasses. I wear Persol as my daily eyewear. Great fashion choice. Stay well and Merry Christmas.
Thank you! I really appreciate it! Yeah, I love NYC, but it's good to get out of the city every now and then. Merry Christmas to you as well!
It’s a good thing you got into New Haven early to walk. Walking around New Haven is dangerous afternoon after they wake up.
Luckily I felt pretty safe during my entire visit.

My home town! My favorite pizza place in the world - and I grew up going to the Peabody Museum. I've had pizza at Pepe's, Solly's, and Regina in Boston. Modern is the best of the best.
Nice! Yeah, New Haven is a special place!

James, that was outstanding! I’m from New Haven and am well tuned in to how fantastic it is! How the hell you actually consumed that much pizza from Modern is crazy! Thanks for a great review! Cheers!

Absolutely! It's definitely a restaurant that I want to try in the future.
That pizza looks incredible
It was really good!
New Haven really is one of the best little cities in the country.
I agree, it has a lot to offer.
No it isn't, it's a sh*thole , but the pizza is the best in the country.
I like Frank Pepes the most because I think the line moves faster than Sally's. I also prefer the interior of Frank Pepes because it feels more spacious than Sallys.
Those are good points!

Haha! Yeah, it was one fine pizza!
Hi James! My husband and I just finished watching the video.... wonderful review. We voted for Modern, just our choice 👍. We are big on pretty (presentation). Although too floppy can slow down the pizza eating momentum !lol thanks for the really fun day Trip. See you soon 👍

What a relaxing day trip! I’d love to be able to travel by train to other locations. As a TX resident, I’m completely dependent on the car. Their infrastructure doesn’t allow for anything BUT car travel 😩
That's frustrating. Yeah, I'm pretty lucky to be able to get around with public transportation.
Wow looks great now to go there 😂
It's definitely a restaurant to check out!
Do you use the app Beli? It’s my favorite for documenting and ranking everywhere I eat!
No, but I probably should.
If you like a thin pizza you have to try BAR, it’s my personal number 2 in new haven, after Sally’s ofc
I'll definitely have to check out BAR on my next visit to New Haven.
I was blown away when I tasted the pizza at Frank Peppe. I was then blown away even more when I visited Sally's. Modern Apizza seems to be a bit heavier, def seems to have more cheese. I think you would have "easily" polished a pie that size at either Peppe's or Sally's. It also does not seem to have the patina of the other two. Regardless, looking forward to visiting.
Indeed! It's definitely thicker and I wasn't expecting that, but still, it was really good.
Have you been to first burger place in country Louis? I just went to Golden Diner in Chinatown best bacon egg sandwich in city they put a hashbrown on it. Get there when they open at 10 no reservations on weekends
I have. I went during my first visit to New Haven. It's a decent burger, but the history of the restaurant was what really attracted me. Golden Diner is one of the places that I've been meaning to check out. That does sound like a great sandwich. I'll keep it in mind when I eventually visit.
Another solid video! Got to say New Haven has the best pizza in America. While the best in NYC are just has good New Haven is better. That pizza looked amazing!
Thank you! Yeah, New Haven is a very special place for pizza!
Looks like good pizza!
It was definitely great pizza!
the thing to get at the new haven trinity are the clam pies 😂🎉
Indeed, but I had a taste for pepperoni and sausage that day.
Sally's and Pepe's are both good... havent had Modern yet but I have to say it looks better than both of the others. You should go try Johnny's in Mount Vernon. That one holds up to all this New Haven stuff in a similar style.
Johnny's is solid, when you visit the Modern visit Zupardi's
Definitely check out Modern if you get the chance and thanks for the recommendation!
I been to New Haven for Louie lunch now I gots come back for the Pizza.
Louis' Lunch is great, but New Haven pizza I think is even better.

Agree, Modern is the best. I prefer ordering small pies with one topping or none.(always try plain pie first to be sure you like the crust and sauce) My Favorite is sausage and onion .Personally pepperoni overpowers pizza for me and I never order it!!
Sausage and onion is a great combo! Indeed, Modern is a fantastic place.
Wish there was trains on the west coast, I have to drive everywhere
Yeah, the trains here are nice. I don't own a car so I wouldn't be able to get around as well as I do without them.
Go to zuppardi's for a great clam pie
That's definitely another spot on my list.
Great presentation. Who, if any of us, do not enjoy a good pizza. Your video reminded me of “Artichoke Basille’s Pizza” in Chelsea. It was once my go to place when I lived in mid-town East Side (Sutton Place). At that time nothing surpassed their quality. It was always worth the long trip to lower Manhattan. Obviously the journey downtown was always worth it. Not unlike your trip to Connecticut.
Thank you! I do really like Artichoke Basille's as well!
As someone who lives here, thanks for making me appreciate what we have.
I don't think people take advantage of the free art museum with world class artists.

James is much better. Zimmerman eats some crazy stuff!
Haha! Yeah, eating that pizza started to become a challenge at the end, but it was still really good!
Modern tastes better than the rest because the dough is different- no one ever mentions that - its got a unique flavor all its own- just got to go easy on the Mozz

Pizza is one of my favorite food,if not favorite. Personally the slop is something I like about pizza.
What’s your favorite pizza place in NYC?
Pizza is pretty much a standard of my diet. It's hard to narrow it down to just one pizza place, but I would probably have to go with John's of Bleecker Street.
I lived in New Haven 12 years and - you nailed it! I also rank the big three pizzerias in your order, but they are close to equally good! Plus, great local stops for ice cream coffee and art!
Nice! Yeah, I really enjoyed all three restaurants and New Haven as a whole. The city certainly has a lot to offer.
A real pimp finishing that pizza
I tried.
Just realized you did not get the clam pie!
Next time. For my first visit, I wanted to keep things simple, but it does look really good!
Sally's, Modern, Pepe's in that order
Fair enough. All three are amazing places!
do you bike?
No, but I would like to. I'm a big runner though.
Ya start with the plain cheese first , Floppy Apizza is the best like your video !
Fair enough. I just prefer a little less flop.
Yeah I don't get how someone could eat just one slice unless you ate something else earlier.
Indeed!
I ate there a copy of years ago, and it was just meh; I really wish I went to Sally’s
That's a shame, but I yeah, I like Sally's more too.
I’ve visited them all during my Connecticut pizza tour last month and for me Sally’s is still the best with Frank Pepe a close second. Been a lifelong New Yorker and have eaten 100s of pizzerias, New Haven Pizza is hands-down the best
Have you been to Zupardi's and what is your favorite New York Pizza?
Zuppardi’s is next on my list when I return to New Haven. I did have Zanelli, which is across the street from Frank Pepe. A smaller Neapolitan pie, but super fresh
As far as favorite New York pizza I would have to say Lucali.
Indeed! Anyone who enjoys pizza has to go to New Haven. I loved every pizza that I've had there.
Went to sally's, ask them if they have fresh clams or minced clams from a can. They told me their clam pie is minced clams from a can. I left there and went right back to Pepe's.....The one and only.
@@muffinman4353 I've been disappointed each time at Pepes. Zupardis uses fresh whole belly clams.
Expensive pizza, considering you had to pay $73 to get there one way😮
It was way less than that with Metro North. I paid about $40 round trip. Plus, I went to New Haven also for the art museum, not just pizza.
Modern not usually that floppy!
I was thinking the same, but he probably paced himself to devour that pie!
I still really enjoyed it.
You are whole pie by self 😂😅
